Things were going badly on Saturday Night Live‘s 1980-1981 season, even before producer Jean Doumanian realized than the January 10, 1981 episode was headed towards disaster.
The previous season had seen the departure of Lorne Michaels and the entire cast, including founders Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, and Laraine Newman, as well as Bill Murray and Harry Shearer. Doumanian had tried to pitch her incoming group of comedians as the next generation for the hit series, but the performers quickly gained reputations as also-rans. Charlie Rocket was a less funny Chevy Chase, Gail Matthius an off-brand Jane Curtin, and so on.
But on that Jan. 10, 1981 episode, hosted by actor Ray Sharkey, things were going particularly badly. The skits went faster than anticipated and the show had five extra minutes to fill. So in an act of desperation, Doumanian followed the advice of writer Neil Levy and pushed 19-year-old featured player...

The stars of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" are very funny people, and since three of the central gang are also writers on the show, they have an extra-intimate understanding of their characters. That means that they're able to really riff and ad-lib with the best of them, tweaking their scripted lines to make them even better or coming up with new bits wholesale if the inspiration strikes. What's on the written page and what's been added or adjusted on-set used to be a bit more secret, but since the guys co-host "The Always Sunny Podcast," where they talk about the making of the series, fans now get to know exactly who's responsible for some of the series' funniest moments.
On an episode where co-producers and stars Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, and Rob McElhenney (along with writer and co-producer Megan Ganz) discussed some of their biggest, funniest bloopers, the gang...

A Chinese film-maker and an Arsenal-supporting widower converge in a small Essex town in this strange but absorbing take on pastoral England
There’s an eccentric Englishness in this quirky, microbudget feature from screenwriter Adam Ganz and director Marc Isaacs. They have created a kind of docu-fictional guided reality, a weird soap set in the picturesque Essex town of Thaxted, known for its association with the composer Gustav Holst who was entranced by its beauty and established a music festival there with the encouragement of its Christian socialist vicar, Conrad Noel.
Ganz and Isaacs have got some present-day Thaxted inhabitants to play heightened or fictionally modified versions of themselves, in a story interspersed with black-and-white clips from Ripe Earth, the Boulting brothers’ early short film from 1938, also set in Thaxted. Lori (Yingge Lori Yang) is a young Chinese film-maker who has come to Thaxted to record the local traditions, especially the morris dancing,...

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is a somewhat unique comedy series in that the central cast and creative team have known one another for years, working together long before FX picked up their homemade pilot and they had a cable TV show together. That means that some of their inside jokes and gags go back decades, and in at least one instance, they ended up plagiarizing themselves by reusing a gag from one of their homemade shorts to create a major character for "Always Sunny." Then again, maybe plagiarism is too strong a word, considering the fact that the short wasn't really shown to the masses prior to "Sunny" blowing up and it's a very basic character premise, but they definitely still copied themselves.

There are a lot of memorable moments in the "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" episode "The D.E.N.N.I.S. System," but perhaps the best is the final scene in which Dennis (Glenn Howerton) tries to win back the affection of his pharmacist ex-girlfriend (Jill Latiano Howerton) with the help of his (fake) grandmother, Gladys. As a part of his system for winning over women, he pretended to have a sick grandmother in order to flirt with the pharmacist and he needed a grandmother to prove to her that his story was true. They go to the carnival to purportedly get Gladys some fresh air, but the whole plan falls apart after the rest of the gang shows up with their own versions of Dennis' system. The gang leave, abandoning poor Gladys in front of one of the carnival booths without a way to get home. The gang are pretty awful people,...

Not every work of art withstands the test of time. Sometimes that's just because a new generation has different tastes in stories and storytelling styles. Sometimes it's because the artwork is the product of a very specific moment, and is difficult to appreciate without understanding the cultural, political, sociological, and/or artistic context in which it was created.
It's usually a treat to discover that a film or a TV show made decades before you were born still retains most, if not all of its power. But sometimes it's also deeply sad. That's because many films and TV shows attempt to speak about the tragedies of society, and the evils we encounter every day and must remain ever vigilant against. To watch those films generations after they were produced and discover that their themes and their warnings are still relevant — and maybe even more relevant than ever — speaks highly of the artists who created them,...

Rick and Morty’s Dan Harmon addressed the sexual assault and misconduct allegations leveled against his co-creator Justin Roiland, as well as the long deterioration of their relationship in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m frustrated, ashamed, and heartbroken that a lot of hard work, joy, and passion can be leveraged to exploit and harm strangers,” Harmon said.
Roiland was fired from Rick and Morty earlier this year after it was publicly revealed that he’d been charged with domestic violence back in 2020. He’d pleaded not guilty,...

Updated with statement: After a story this week from Deadline’s sister publication Rolling Stone detailed allegations against Oscar-winner F. Murray Abraham, the actor has issued a statement on the matter, the text of which Deadline has confirmed with his representative.
“This is a sincere and deeply felt apology,” reads Abraham’s statement.
It goes on to reference Lionsgate’s decision last year not to bring him back for Season 3 of Mythic Quest. “Though never my intention to offend anyone, I told jokes, nothing more, that upset some of my colleagues and as a result lost a great job with wonderful people.”
It continues, “I have grown in my understanding from this experience, and I hope they will forgive me.”
Previously on April 19: The Mythic Quest team will be one key member short, with F. Murray Abraham leaving the series before it returns for Season 3.

It is a miracle that Dan Harmon's groundbreaking sitcom "Community" lasted more than a half-season on NBC. The series about seven misfits who form a study group at the fictional Greendale Community College was aggressively dense in its world-building and proudly esoteric in its references. How esoteric? In only its second season, the show turned what was set up as a "Pulp Fiction" homage into an invigoratingly cerebral riff on "My Dinner with Andre" provoked by a character's extra work on Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel's "Cougar Town." Not so shockingly, "Community" ranked a dire 138 in the Nielsen ratings that year.
Harmon and a crack staff of writers that included Megan Ganz, Dino Stamatopoulos, Liz Cackowski, Chris McKenna, and Andy Bobrow shredded the outside of the envelope of what was acceptable on a network sitcom. It made "Seinfeld" look like "Full House." Critics and a cult following kept...

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia with Danny DeVito is one of the longest-running shows on television, and its unique brand of scumbag comedy remains as potent as ever. The show introduced a group of then-unknown comedic actors to a wider audience. But the inclusion of DeVito in the cast gave It’s Always Sunny some valuable cache at the beginning of its run.
In a recent interview, DeVito explained how he became part of the Gang.
‘It’s Always Sunny’ fans can thank John Landgraf for introducing DeVito to the show
DeVito was a guest on the Always Sunny podcast hosted by co-stars Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, and Rob McElhenney, as well as show writer and executive producer Megan Ganz. DeVito reveals that the show appeared on his radar thanks to his relationship with television executive John Landgraf.
Landgraf co-founded DeVito’s production company Jersey Television before becoming the president of entertainment and later CEO of FX.

In the late 1960s, way before he starred in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Danny DeVito began his career as an actor. He portrayed Martini in the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and did so again for the 1975 film. He has had a successful career since then, but it was not something he planned for.
Unlike some celebrities, DeVito did have the goal to act originally. Before landing his first role, his sister had him train to do something else. DeVito explained more about what happened in a podcast.
‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ with Danny DeVito is filming season 16
According to Av Club, season 15 ends with the Gang throwing Shelley’s body over a cliff before returning to Philadelphia. Now, viewers wait for another batch of episodes. In early February 2023, filming for the show began. Many stars will return as their iconic characters, and fans wonder what is in store.

Disney is such an all-consuming, slickly mechanized corporate beast that it is easy to forget that, just a few decades ago, it was a family business that had fallen into disrepair and was painfully uncool to the rest of Hollywood.
Thankfully, Tom Hanks is here to remind us.
Hanks was a guest on Sirius Xm’s “The Jess Cagle Show,” and when Cagle brought up the fact Hanks once appeared on “Happy Days,” it led to a fascinating story about how that brief appearance (where Hanks played a guy who kicks Fonzie through a plate-glass window) would lead to the biggest break of his nascent career – his role in “Splash.” Watch above.
As it turns out, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel were the head writers on “Happy Days” when Hanks filmed his episode. Ron Howard had already left “Happy Days” and was working on what would be the 1984 hit “Splash” with the film’s writers.

Updated with lawyer statement: Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is facing some serious incarceration time over domestic violence charges.
In a semi-sealed case kept out of the public until today, Roiland has been charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit by the Orange County District Attorney’s office. The incident in question against a Jane Doe allegedly occurred in January 2020, according to a May 2020 complaint (read it here).
Based on California sentencing guidelines, that means, the voice of the Adult Swim series’ scientist Rick Sanchez could be behind bars for up to seven years and face some hefty fines if found guilty.
Having said that, no trial date has been set yet for the case and it looks like a plea is in the offering, according to a hearing held Thursday.

Apple today unveiled a first-look teaser for the third season of its critically acclaimed workplace comedy Mythic Quest, which is slated to premiere on Apple TV+ this fall.
The series created by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Megan Ganz follows a group of video game developers tasked with building worlds, molding heroes and creating legends, but the most hard-fought battles don’t occur in the game — they happen in the office. While its second season watched as the company’s creative director Ian Grimm (McElhenney) and co-creative director Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao) departed to pursue their own venture, today’s teaser promised that this decision has actually “changed nothing.”
This time around, Ian and Poppy will continue to navigate the gaming world and their partnership at the newly formed GrimPop Studios, with Dana (Imani Hakim) being forced to play mediator to her bosses’ incessant bickering. Back at Mythic Quest, David...

Fans of “A League of Their Own” have a new Amazon Prime Video series to look forward to, but if things had gone just a bit differently, there could have been a second movie as well. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter to commemorate the film’s 30th anniversary, the film’s screenwriter Lowell Ganz spoke about plans for a prequel that were made in the wake of the initial film’s success. While it never materialized, the second movie would have focused on the baseball career of Tom Hanks’ character Jimmy Dugan.
“We actually wanted to do a prequel sequel — we wanted to do a movie about Jimmy,” Ganz said. “It was going to talk about his career before he got involved with the women’s baseball league, and then it would sort of skip over that, and the last act was going to be his career afterward,...

When A League of Their Own premiered 30 years ago on July 1, 1992, it was not expected to be a hit.
Director Penny Marshall, coming off of Big (1988) and the Oscar-nominated Awakenings (1990), had watched a PBS documentary about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which launched in the 1940s, and sent the doc to Lowell Ganz, co-creator of her sitcom Laverne & Shirley and a baseball fanatic. With a deal at Fox expired, Marshall, who died in 2018 at age 75, made it clear to interested studios that League, focusing on fictionalized Aagpbl players, would be her next picture.
