J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, so you’re probably stoked for the movie version of his life, hoping it’ll be filled to bursting with adventure, brain-teasing fantasy and rock-’em-sock-’em action just like the books and the movies Peter Jackson directed into box-office and Oscar glory. Right?
Sorry, fans, here comes the buzzkill. Tolkien — pronounced toll-keen as the film takes great pains to inform us — is a bit of a stiff as cinema, rich in atmospherics but starved for the human...

One thing you learn early on in Tolkien is that it is pronounced “Tol-keen,” contrary to the way many fans have been saying it. That is one of many facts you learn in the J.R.R. Tolkien biopic Tolkien, which covers the early life of the “Lord of the Rings” author. It was not an easy life, as the young Tolkien, played by Nicholas Hoult, endured personal tragedies and hardships, but it was also a time of deep friendship, challenges, growth, and even young love, capped by the singular horrors of World War I, experiences which the author later wove into his fantasy tales of hobbits, elves and the fellowship of a ring.
Actually, Tolkien is more an interesting film than the deeply involving one audience might hope it would be.

When J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate issued a statement objecting to Dome Karukoski’s dour new biopic about the “Lord of the Rings” writer’s formative years, they had yet to actually see the film. Odds are they never will, as Christopher Tolkien has made clear his frustrations over the way that contemporary pop culture has devoured his father’s legacy: “Tolkien has become a monster, devoured by his own popularity and absorbed by the absurdity of our time,” he told Le Monde in 2012. “The commercialization has reduced the aesthetic and philosophical impact of the creation to nothing.” That didn’t stop the estate from selling the rights to Tolkien’s signature fantasy saga when Amazon showed up with a $250 million check, but it’s hard to blame them for that.
Be that as it may, there’s a peculiar irony to the family’s pro forma objection to “Tolkien,” a...

This refreshing origins story, starring Nicholas Hoult, traces the early life of Jrr Tolkien as he makes friends at Oxford, finds love and faces the horror of war
A sweet innocence and high-mindedness pervade this movie from screenwriters David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford and the Finnish director Dome Karukoski. It’s about the early life of Jrr Tolkien – who, like Cs Lewis, became a staggeringly successful author but remained an unworldly Oxford don to the end of his days, never dreaming of the kind of mega-celebrity and super-wealth that writers such as Jk Rowling or George Rr Martin enjoy.
Nicholas Hoult plays the doe-eyed young John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, an orphaned boy at King Edward’s School, Birmingham, with a brilliant facility for languages who makes three good friends there (his “fellowship”) and falls shyly in love with the young woman at his boarding house, Edith Bratt (Lily Collins), but who...

As a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, I’m looking forward to the upcoming biopic Tolkien, which stars Nicholas Hoult as the famed author of the legendary Middle Earth stories. The movie actually looks like it will be really good!
The movie will explore Tolkien’s early life and follow "the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the 'fellowship' apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels."
Well, Tolkien’s family has made it very clear that they aren’t on board with the film and the estate released a statement saying, "They do not endorse it or its content in any way.”

J.R.R. Tolkien’s family and the Tolkien Estate have come forward to disavow the upcoming Fox Searchlight biopic that stars “X-Men” actor Nicholas Hoult as the iconic “Lord of the Rings” author. The film, titled “Tolkien,” is set for release next month. A statement released by both parties says they want to “make clear that they did not approve of, authorize, or participate in the making” of the film and “they do not endorse it or its content in any way.” Tolkien’s family and the Tolkien Estate have not seen the movie but have long turned down agreeing to any official biopics.
“Tolkien” is directed by Dome Karukoski, the Finnish filmmaker behind “The Grump” and “Tom of Finland,” and features a script written by David Gleeson (“Cowboys and Aliens”) and Stephen Beresford (“Pride”). Hoult stars in the title role, while Lily Collins plays Tolkien’s lifelong love and wife Edith Bratt.

Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for their fantastic-looking new film Tolkien, which tells the story of legendary Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit author J.R.R. Tolkien. It dives into his life and the things that happened in it that inspired him to create Middle Earth and the stories that filled it.
Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Tolkien, and the movie looks like an intense and inspiring journey. As a longtime fan of Tolkien’s work, this is a movie that I’ve very much looking forward to watching. As you’ll see, the movie also offers up some beautiful imagery inspired by his epic fantasy stories, like the dragon Smaug, who you can see above.

War, dragons, camaraderie and romance – it’s too soon for another Game of Thrones trailer, so it’s gotta be Tolkien. Fox Searchlight released a second trailer for the upcoming biopic today, giving even more clues about the approach the film will take in chronicling both the life and the imagination of the groundbreaking author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The new trailer begins with a direct-to-camera address from stars Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins – he plays young John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and she’s Edith Bratt, the woman and muse who’ll become the author’s wife. Two things to note: Hoult, and so Fox Searchlight, intentionally or unintentionally seem to wade into the Spielberg-Netflix brouhaha. “We’re so grateful to be part of this project,” Hoult says, “and we can’t wait for you to see it on the big screen.”

In the first trailer for the “Tolkien,” Nicholas Hoult portrays the “Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” creator and describes a story of magic, love and courage.
“Tell me a story,” Lily Collins’s Edith Bratt, Tolkien’s wife, muse and the inspiration for his “Lord of the Rings” character Arwen Undómiel, says.
“It’s a story about journeys. The journeys we take to prove ourselves,” Hoult says. “It’s about inventions. It’s about potent magic. Magic beyond anything anyone has ever felt before. It’s about what it means to love and to be loved. It’s about courage. It’s about fellowship.”

A new Fox Searchlight trailer might have a familiar ring to it, but this journey to Middle-earth comes via the true story of the magical world’s one-of-a-kind creator. Tolkien, in theaters this May, stars Nicholas Hoult as author J.R.R. Tolkien, born in South Africa, raised in England and elevated to immortality on millions of bookshelves around the world with the publications of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Tolkien’s immersive epics and richly realized worlds made his novels international sensations, and his detailed guides to his worlds inspired modern myth-makers like George Lucas, James Cameron, George R.R. Whether it’s J.M. Barrie and “Finding Neverland” or A. A. Milne and “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” no famous author is safe from the biopic treatment in which the origins of his or her greatest literary work is contextualized in their personal lives. Next up in the genre is J. R. R.
