If you’re not caught up on your peak TV viewing, consider this your spoiler warning. Four months have passed since Jennifer Coolidge bagged her second consecutive Emmy for “The White Lotus” and thus became the eighth drama or comedy series regular honored by the TV academy for a season in which her character died. Emmy nominations of this kind have become quite common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2024 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will be added to the list.
The current consensus among more than 2,400 Gold Derby users is that five continuing series performers whose characters perished within the past year will receive Emmy nominations, while a few others have outside shots at recognition. This does not include characters like Anakin Skywalker who died before their shows’ latest seasons began but appear as ghosts or in flashbacks. Undead characters like most of...

Oh Yeong-su, who won a Golden Globe for his performance in Netflix’s “Squid Game,” was found guilty of sexual misconduct by a South Korean court on Friday.
According to the New York Times, a district court judge in the city of Seongnam ruled that Oh was guilty of inappropriately touching an actress in 2017, including hugging her, holding her hand and kissing her cheek.
The 79-year-old Oh must serve an eight-month suspended sentence and take 40 hours of sexual violence classes. Oh has denied the charges and, according to the Times, told prosecutors on Friday that he plans to appeal the verdict.
Oh was initially charged in 2022 after a complaint was filed by an actress alleging that he inappropriately touched her. Judge Jeong Yeon-ju, who presided over the case, said that the actress received sexual violence counseling in 2018, but the success of “Squid Game” in 2021 prompted her to demand an apology from Oh.

If you’re behind on your peak TV watching, consider this your spoiler warning. It’s been nearly a year since Julia Garner collected her third and final Emmy for “Ozark,” which made her the seventh comedy or drama series regular to snag a TV academy prize for a season in which her character died. Nominations of this kind have become more common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2023 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will fit into the group.
Gold Derby’s Emmy nominations odds currently indicate that eight actors whose comedic or dramatic characters met their demise within the last year could feasibly earn bids, as all of them are ranked no lower than 12th place in their respective races. This does not include characters like Bunny Folger or John Paul Williams who died prior to the starts of their shows’ latest seasons but still appear in flashbacks.

Netflix viewers have hailed one small but key piece of casting in the new Addams Family adaptation, Wednesday.
The series, based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams, sees Jenna Ortega (X; Jane the Virgin) play Wednesday Addams.
Among the supporting cast are Luiz Guzmán, who plays Gomez, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia. Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the 1990s film adaptations, also makes an appearance as one of Wednesday’s teachers.
However, there was one piece of casting that Netflix kept secret until close to the series’ release date earlier this week: who would be playing Uncle Fester.
As it turns out, Fester is played in the series by comedian and former Saturday Night Live star Fred Armisen.
Viewers expressed delight about the casting on social media, with some branding the decision to cast Armisen as “genius”.

The 74th annual Emmy Awards turned out to be a night of few surprises, with wins playing out largely according to predictions — including TheWrap’s own Steve Pond, who guessed last week that there would be no sweeps as the top shows — “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Squid Game” and “Abbott Elementary” — all duked it out for dominance.
In the end, it was HBO’s limited series “The White Lotus” that took home the most trophies, five, with three wins going to writer-director-executive-producer Mike White.
“Ted Lasso” won four Emmys, repeating its 2021 triumph in supporting actor (Brett Goldstein), lead actor (Jason Sudeikis) and comedy series — and adding directing for a comedy series (M.J. Delaney). “Succession” took home three statuettes, including Outstanding Drama Series, which it last won in 2020.

Never has there been more TV to watch, and never has there been more shows worthy of being awarded the most prestigious award in the television industry. It's the 2022 Emmys, and like the streaming-dominated landscape the awards ceremony represents — with many of this year's nominees hailing from Netflix, HBO Max, Apple TV+, and more — it's more accessible than ever; available to be streamed live for the first time on Peacock, NBC's streaming service.
It's the year that the final season of "Better Call Saul" is up against heavy hitters like "Succession" and "Stranger Things," where "Squid Game" makes history for Korean-language dramas, where "Only Murders in the Building" and "Ted Lasso" fight for our hearts (and our funny bones), and where Rhea Seehorn once again is deprived of a long overdue acknowledgement of her brilliant work. It feels like a year where anything is truly possible. And this here...

Months after nabbing an individual Screen Actors Guild Award for “Squid Game,” Jung Ho-yeon has now been recognized for her work on the Netflix show in the Emmy category of Best Drama Supporting Actress. The Korean series, on which Jung plays the role of Kang Sae-byeok, constitutes her first television credit. If she triumphs at the 74th Emmys, her debut performance will be the first fully non-English language one ever honored by the TV academy (unless one of her nominated co-stars beats her to the punch).

A version of this story about Hwang Dong-hyuk and “Squid Game” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
It’s been a little less than a year since the debut of Netflix’s smash hit “Squid Game,” and only from this distance are people beginning to understand the true scope of the show’s influence and registering that even if the series wasn’t the best of the season — which it very well might be — it was certainly the most important.
The facts have been recited endlessly but remain as impressive as ever. A whopping 1.65 billion viewing hours on Netflix during its first four weeks of streaming. The first non-English-language series and first Korean series to score nominations and wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. No show this past season had a breakout moment quite like “Squid Game” did. Just two months after Netflix released its entire nine-episode debut season on September 17, it was announced that the South Korean series about class, inequality and exploitation had become the streamer’s most-watched show of all time. Now, the mega hit has also taken the Emmys by storm, racking up an impressive 14 nominations. One of those is for guest star Lee You-mi, who is recognized for her heartbreaking portrayal of Ji-yeong (aka Player 240) on the show. This marks the career-first bid for the actor, who now hopes to, uh, get the green light all the way to her maiden victory.

The glass is half-full in the Emmy diversity landscape. At least that’s what we can tell ourselves with this year’s Primetime nominations.
Quinta Brunson’s historic showing as the first Black woman to score three noms for comedy series, lead actress and writing for ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” is one of the brightest spots of the lot.
An undeniable force in the industry, Zendaya became the youngest producer ever to be nominated for drama series for “Euphoria,” which she executive produces. In addition, at 25, she also became the youngest person ever to land two lead acting noms at the Emmys.
And how can we not mention “Squid Game,” the first non-English series to be recognized in TV Academy history? Not only did it rack up an impressive 14 noms overall, but also four acting mentions for Lee Jung-jae in lead actor, Jung Hoyeon in supporting actress and two supporting...

Daniel Fienberg: Happy Emmy Morning! Sorry. I’m a little pumped up. It’s the most exciting morning of the year for people who love television and like to measure success or failure based on the opinions of a couple thousand industry insiders, rather than a pair of sage TV critics, like us!
So where do we want to start?
Are we going to lead with excitement over Rhea Seehorn finally breaking through and earning her first nomination for Better Call Saul? Or our excitement for fresh faces like Yellowjackets and Severance or Abbott Elementary making big splashes? Or the well-earned title sequence nomination for the jubilant opening to Pachinko?
Or do we want to lead with rage that that was the only nomination for Pachinko and that Reservation Dogs received a whopping zero nominations, tying with Better Things?

“Succession” is the favorite to win Best Drama Series for the second time at the Emmys, according to our early odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, and with that are likely to come three Best Drama Supporting Actor bids, just like it got the last time the show was eligible in 2020. But could “Squid Game” give them a run for their money? At least at the Emmys the loser won’t be executed … hopefully.

In the months since its September debut, Netflix’s “Squid Game” has captured the imaginations and conversations of individuals worldwide and that same fervor is now spilling over into awards season.
On February 27, the survival thriller from South Korea had a historic night at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, as Lee Jung-jae became the first male actor from Asia and Korea to receive an individual SAG Award nomination and Jung Ho-yeon became the second actress of Asian as well as Korean descent to do the same.

Living with his elderly mother, growing estranged from his young daughter, he takes advantage of an opportunity offered by a mysterious stranger. The massive popularity of Netflix’s South Korean survival-horror series can only mean one (or two) things: a second and even third season are more than likely.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently said in an interview shared by the Korea Times (via Deadline), “I’m in talks with Netflix over season two as well as season three. We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”
While Hwang was previously misquoted as saying there will “indeed” be a second season for the series about cash-strapped contestants who sign away their life rights for a chance at a $38 million prize, Netflix later told Vulture in December that a second season is “in discussions but not confirmed yet.” So while a second season is inevitable, it hasn’t yet been greenlit.
Representatives at Netflix could not immediately be reached for comment.

Netflix original series Squid Game hasn’t been greenlighted for Season 2 yet, but the series’ creator is looking beyond that.
Hwang Dong-hyuk told the Korea Times: “I’m in talks with Netflix over Season 2 as well as Season 3. We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”
Squid Game is a survival drama set in Seoul, where hundreds of financially strapped contestants signed away their life rights to play children’s games for a chance at winning a $38 million grand prize. But lose any round and be prepared for a grisly death.
It’s the first time Dong-hyuk has talked about the possibility of a third season. The creator previously told Deadline that he had begun the creative process for the follow-up after the Korean dystopian drama series quickly reached No. 1 in 90 countries within the first two weeks. Netflix’s most-watched series ever with more than 142M households watching.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the 79th Golden Globes on Monday morning.
The announcements were made from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, but there's a big chance the actual ceremony will not see the light of day.
NBC announced there would be no televised ceremony this time around.
The decision came after the HFPA was put under intense scrutiny for the lack of representation and ethical conflicts among its members.
Many media conglomerates announced they would no longer work with the HFPA until there was a change.
Tom Cruise returned his three awards in the immediate aftermath of the backlash.
In August, the organization revealed it would change its membership process in an effort to diversify.
Naturally, this raises questions about whether any of the nominees will attend the event, or even accept the awards.
The event is currently set to take place on January 9, and for now,...

Twenty-one new members strong, the ramshackle Hollywood Foreign Press Association has emerged from the ashes of a beleaguered 2021 to present its list of the 2022 Golden Globe nominations. The nominees were unveiled at dawn out of Beverly Hills in person and via a live stream. They were presented by new HFPA president Helen Hoehne and surprise guest Snoop Dogg. See below.
Submissions were not required for award consideration this year, however, the HFPA accommodated filmmakers/studios who requested their content to be considered only for specific categories. The HFPA will recognize its winners on Sunday, January 9, 2022 in a yet-to-be-disclosed formal ceremony of some kind. Additional details will be forthcoming.
Per the organization, “Over the last eight months, the HFPA has completely overhauled its bylaws, implementing sweeping changes from top to bottom that address ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership, and more. Recently, the HFPA admitted their...

‘Squid Game’ Triggers Feeding Frenzy As Hollywood Agencies Chase Creator & Stars Of Netflix Mega Hit
The phenomenal success of Netflix’s Squid Game came seemingly out of nowhere, catapulting its writer-director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, and cast to global stardom and making them the hottest commodity in Hollywood. That has created a stampede among the major agencies to sign Hwang and the actors, the vast majority of whom have no Hollywood representation.
That includes Hwang who recently met with the heads of the major talent agencies, CAA (soon-to-be-merged with ICM), WME and UTA, sources said. He is said to still be mulling who to sign with. The cast, led by Lee Jung-jae, Jung HoYeon and Park Hae-soo, also have been taking agency/management meetings this week, sources said.
Hwang and the actors are all in town; they flew in for the big press junket Netflix held for the show on Monday following its breakout success.

Squid Game has officially reached “inspector royale” status, and now is on track to overtake Bridgerton as Netflix’s most-sampled series ever.
The Korean-language thriller, which released nine episodes on Sept. 17, is described as “an imaginative, unorthodox story in which 456 contestants risk their lives in a mysterious survival game — involving multiple rounds of childhood games — for a chance to win 45.6 billion won” (or about $40 million U.S.; the first episode alone begs you to keep a won/dollar conversion calculator nearby).
