This week will see the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for a new comics project, The Golden Guard, by Vito Delsante, Charlie McElvy and Carlos Caballero. I got a chance to talk with Vito Delsante the other day.
Jc: I think it is fair to say you’re a big comics fan, and particularly of legacy superheroes. What is it about them that makes you want tell their stories?
Vd: I think it’s less about the legacy and more about how the most current person in the line handles the responsibility of the mantle. Like, if you’re the most current Phantom (Lee Falk’s character) and you’re 24, let’s say, your reality, your Africa/Bengalla, is totally different than your grandfather’s. So, there’s a real chance, as a storyteller, to push the idea of legacy further. That’s what Sean and I try to do...

It’s made America a ravaged reflection of its former, healthier self. The Simian Flu that began to spread at the end of 2011′s Rise of the Planet of the Apes has taken a bite out of humanity and left apes as the emerging superior power in the San Francisco area. Tomorrow sees the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Boom! Studios has announced a limited comic book series that follows what happened in the ten-year gap between films, as well as a one-shot prequel comic that will be an Sdcc exclusive.
Composed of six issues and titled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the comic book series will come out this November, with the first issue set to be released in two different covers. The one-shot set to premiere at Sdcc is titled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Contagion and serves...

The first issue of Boom! Studios' action-adventure series Hunter's Fortune is now available at retail level. Written by acclaimed indie creator Caleb Monroe, the comic follows Hunter Prescott, who must quest for the mythical sword Excalibur in order to earn the sizeable fortune left to him by his late uncle. "That's our starting point. Hunter's uncle Max dies and leaves him a beyond-wildest-dreams fortune, but to keep it he must complete the nigh-impossible task of finding a possibly mythical sword," Monroe told Newsarama. "For once the stakes are simply too high for Hunter (more)...

Spirituality has always been a part of human storytelling. In today’s comic books, whether it’s faith in a hero or submission to fate, spirituality of one kind or another plays an integral part in plot and character.
At Comic-Con this year, some popular comic-book storytellers sat down with a precocious audience to discuss where spirituality and religion fit into their works and into American storytelling as a whole, and how our modern tales might be doing a soulful injustice.
The panel, brought together by the Christian Comic Arts Society, included an Agnostic (Elan Rodger Trinidad), two Christians (Doug Tennapel and Caleb Monroe), and a witch (Holly Golightly). Remarkably, there were no fights or bitter accusations flung across the table, but rather a unified sense of pride and communion as storytellers focus on spirituality in their work, whether it’s of a religious or metaphysical nature.
