After playing two blood-thirsty American presidents—on stage in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and on screen in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter—Benjamin Walker may now play an American Psycho.

A Long Way Down
R, 1 Hr., 36 Mins.
A bright cast spackles this uneven Nick Hornby adaptation about a quartet of suicidal strangers (Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, and Imogen Poots) who meet on a London rooftop one New Year’s Eve and quickly become a fractured family. With an ace troupe like that, there are affecting moments, to be sure. But the movie criminally wastes Sam Neill and Rosamund Pike in barely there supporting roles, and the picture has exactly two tones: grim and gooey. They do not coexist harmoniously. The Protector 2
R, 1 Hr., 44 Mins.
Thai martial-arts maestro Tony Jaa’s newest film overloads on terrible F/X that rob the film of the actor’s usual brute-force balleticism. Also, RZA plays the bad guy — and someone needs to tell the Wu-Tang master that he can’t act (or fight). The Protector 2 does have a loony charm (actual line of dialogue: “You lost your elephant again?”), and Jija Yanin Wismitanan has a scene-stealing turn as a lady warrior seeking — wait for it — vengeance. Latino-Review recently had the opportunity to be the first to screen footage from the highly anticipated film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes presented by Caesar himself, Andy Serkis. While the final film is still in the works and will be shown in 3D, we saw a few clips which were partially finished and in shown in 2D. According to Andy Serkis, it was really rare to work on a blockbuster film that has a real message behind it because this sequel is a film about family, tribalism, empathy and prejudice.
Talking about live capture performance this is what Andy had to say.
Andy Serkis: Very little sets were built because a majority of the scenes were shot in live locations and with that comes a lot of complications using performance capture technology. This movie will contain the greatest amount of performance capture ever scene in a movie to date.

Post-Katrina New Orleans, Louisiana seems like a perfect place to shoot a film in which the human population has been largely irradicated. There are pockets in and around that city where entire towns have become completely vacant. Nature has taken back control of areas that once hummed with life. It would seem to be the most obvious setting for the sequel to ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’. However, we aren’t in one of those desolate places – we are in the heart of the the iconic French Quarter. A few blocks from the world famous Cafe du Monde is the set of Matt Reeves ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.’
The Nola financial district is subbing in for the San Francisco Waterfront, some 2,000 miles away. If it weren’t for the camera cranes and a large blue screen above the skyline you wouldn’t have a clue when or where you were.

Forget all that stuff about sabotage-induced scheduling: Smash proved during the second hour of its 120-minute series finale that the series had no trouble shooting itself in its character shoes.
Whoever wrote out the credits could handle “Debra.” They didn’t blink at “Katharine.” But “Anjelica,” somehow, was just too tough… and whether this was NBC’s way of confirming that it just can’t wait to shuffle Smash off the air or Smash’s way of signaling complete and utter defeat, the mistake still hasn’t been corrected on Hulu. Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. “42″ tells the story of two men—the great Jackie Robinson and trailblazing Brooklyn Dodgers Gm Branch Rickey—whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. From Academy Award® winner Brian Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential”) comes the real-life drama “42,” starring Chadwick Boseman (“The Express”) as Jackie Robinson and Oscar® nominee Harrison Ford (“Witness”) as Branch Rickey. In 1947, Branch Rickey put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and other players. Facing blatant racism from every side, even his own team, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind,...

It's almost as if the makers of "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" are interested in making the sequel to "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" really, really good. First they go and get Matt Reeves to replace Rupert Wyatt. Then they cast "Zero Dark Thirty" break-out and star-waiting-to-happen Jason Clarke in the lead human role. Follow that with adding "The Road"'s Kodi Smit-McPhee, and you've got a movie.
But wait...there's more!
ComingSoon is reporting that famed franchise enhancer Gary Oldman is the latest to join the "Apes" sequel. According to the site, Oldman will play the leader of a human colony in a world where most of humanity has been wiped out by the virus hinted at during the climax of "Rise" and the apes have taken over.

Apparently “derivative material begets derivative material” as the saying goes as ABC is mulling a spin-off of their Sunday night hit Once Upon a Time. This one would focus on the Mad Hatter character, which has already appeared a half-dozen times on the series played by actor Sebastian Stan. The only problem is Stan is not available for a series commitment, as he’s currently working on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This would mean, obviously, a recast. The problem I foresee is that viewers who enjoy Stan in the role as the Mad Hatter and maybe follow him if ABC did a spin-off would probably be a bit reluctant to watch it if Stan is not playing him.

Matt Reeves is directing the Planet of the Apes sequel from a script by Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard). The plot is being kept under wraps, but according to THR, it’s set 15 years after the events of the 2011 movie. We also know that one of the focuses will be on some human scientists who are struggling to survive in San Francisco. Andy Serkis’ Caesar will also be in the mix. In this film, he is also struggling, not to survive, but to keep the power over his kingdom.
Principal photography is scheduled to start in the spring. Dawn is being produced by Peter Chernin, Dyland Clarke, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.

Zero Dark Thirty is a film that snatches triumphant victory from the very near jaws of defeat. Director Kathryn Bigelow and her close ally, co producer and screen writer Mark Boal, advance from the Oscar winning Hurt Locker to take on the dark underbelly of the CIA, where water boarding and black ops missions are the norm.
Originally the film was supposed to document the failure of the CIA to capture Osama Bin Laden (Usāmah ibn Lādin, or Ubl in the CIA Acronym world) after the attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001, however it was saved from what would have been a huge own goal when Bin Laden's death was announced in 2011 at the hands of Seal Team 6 before the film had been committed to print.

U.S.A., 2012
The fascinating directing and screenwriting duo of Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal have consciously taken an emotionally and intellectually provocative route in their collective filmmaking career in the past few years. Their interest with regards to telling rich, compelling stories on the big screen, judging by the subject matter of 2009′s The Hurt Locker and now Zero Dark Thirty, is the ensuing foreign policy of the United States in the years following the unimaginable terrorist attacks of September 1th 2001, in essence, the so-baptized war on terror. Whereas the previous award winning effort took audiences to the dusty and all too often bloodied terrain of Iraq when the Americans dispatched of Saddam Hussein and contended with insurgent forces thereafter, the new film invites audiences into the tension-filled, stuffy backrooms of the CIA as they tracked down 9/11′s mastermind,...

With all the awards season momentum it's been gathering, "Zero Dark Thirty" seems poised to gather enough trophies to fill a compound in Abbottabad, but an even darker controversy is brewing which might leave the film dead in the water.
Entertainment Weekly has posted some quotes from the film's screenwriter Mark Boal and director Kathryn Bigelow defending torture scenes showing an al Qaeda detainee named Ammar (Reda Kateb) being given "the works" by CIA honchos played by Jason Clark and Jessica Chastain. That includes strippings, sleep deprivation, being put on a dog leash and waterboardings, but many critics insist that these techniques are Not what led the CIA to Osama bin Laden, and in fact have proved to often be counterproductive.
"It's a movie, not a documentary," said Boal. "We're trying to make the point that waterboarding and other harsh tactics were part of the C.I.A. program."

Jennie Garth is taking it slow when it comes to dating. That may be, in part, because she's a bit conflicted about the kind of men she's attracted to. "I only like guys that are not nice," the recently divorced Beverly Hills, 90210 actress admitted, somewhat sheepishly, on Friday's The Jeff Probst Show. She knows, deep down, that's not a good thing. "What is wrong with us girls?" says Garth, 40. "It's not like I want somebody to treat me badly. James Gandolfini Revealed As Secretary Of Defense Leon Panetta In Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty
Kathryn Bigelow's cast for Zero Dark Thirty is filled with some incredibly talented actors, but nobody should be surprised by that. After all, who would pass up the chance to work with an Academy Award winning director and screenwriter? The film has already been completed and features performances from Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Mark Strong, Jennifer Ehle, Jason Clark, Scott Adkins, Taylor Kinney, Harold Perrineau and Kyle Chandler among others. But apparently one bit of casting news has been kept off the radar and has finally been revealed. Entertainment Weekly has learned that Sopranos star James Gandolfini is also in Zero Dark Thirty and will be playing Leon Panetta, one of the most important figures in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, as he was the head of the CIA when Seal Team Six found and killed their target (he is currently the Secretary of Defense). Lawless
Directed John Hillcoat
Written by Nick Cave
U.S.A., 2012
In 2006, the creative filmmaking duo of John Hillcoat, director, and Nick Cave, screenwriter, floored many a serious movie goer with their brutal, cold, austere period piece The Proposition. Set in the turn of the 20th century, the emotionally and graphically violent piece had Australian star Guy Pearce in the lead role as the most sensible of three criminal brothers, caught between a rock and a hard place by small town sheriff Ray Winstone, as he is tasked with tracking down an killing his own brother, played by Danny Huston. The film played up the idea of a tightly knit band of outlaws whose name recognition attained legendary status, striking fear in the heart of any who hear it. Now, in 2012, the same team behind the camera gives audiences a spiritual sequel of sorts with the prohibition era thriller, Lawless.

Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf and Jason Clark are the Bondurant boys in the upcoming "Lawless." And as the trio sling moonshine as prohibition winds to a close, shifting tides of power put their operation and very lives at risk in John Hillcoat's both beautiful and brutal new film where blood and alcohol flow freely. A brand new red band trailer gets you into the R-rated spirit with a gratuitous boob and a bit more blood than a green band version will allow. Co-starring an impressive array of folks including Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, the story is based on the real life exploits of the aforementoined siblings who find their trade threatened by the long arm of the law led by the flamboyant Special Agent Charlie Rakes (Pearce), whose means to find "justice" are particularly ruthless. If this new trailer isn't enough, there are also...

Nice piece in USA Today about Boston’s Fenway Park as a movie location: "When it comes to making a ballpark a Hollywood star, Boston has seized the market," says sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy, author of Fenway: A Biography in Words and Picture. ... Producer Jason Clark says the ballpark, which opened in 1912, was the best location for [the film Ted’s] climax. "We couldn't have ended the movie in a better way. When you are doing a Boston movie and trying to capture the spirit of the place, Fenway is so intertwined. It's almost a requirement that you honor one of the city's great cathedrals." Perhaps the most famous scene honoring the park was from 1989's Field of Dreams, in which Kevin Costner's ultimate baseball romantic character takes a reclusive writer (James Earl Jones) for an inspirational game at Fenway. ... "For anyone from New England, Fenway is sort of heaven," says Peter Farrelly.

We've had the Lawless trailer, we've had the rather stylish posters, we've had our Damon Wise's first reaction from the Cannes screening. Now here are two new clips from John Hillcoat's Depression-era drama, starring Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Jason Clark, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska. The first clip, over with the good folks at EW, shows Hardy's Forrest butting heads against newcomer Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce), a lawman brought in from the big city to get the rural moonshine problem under control. It's powerful, disturbing stuff - thanks chiefly to Pearce's appalling hair do and lack of eyebrows. Then over at Hulu is a clip showing Forrest and brother Jack (Labeouf) after the latter has been brutally beaten. Let's just say that Hardy's sibling ain't all that sympathetic.Lawless is out in the UK on August 29. We'll be keeping an eye on it all the way; this one looks meaty.

At Cannes, the fabled Palme d’Or isn’t like any other Best Picture award. Unlike, say, the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, or even the Oscar, it is conferred with a reverence that says: This film is a work of art — and the person who made it has been ushered into the pantheon. He (or she) is now one of the initiated, recognized in the shimmering galaxy of the international film world to be a major artist, a saint of the cinema, a wearer of the supreme auteur merit badge. There have been 65 Palme d’Or winners (the award...
