- He was one of eight children of Irish immigrants of Patrick Murphy and his wife, Ellen "Nellie" Jones" from County Cork, Ireland before they immigrated to the United States.
- He earned a Bachelor's Degree from St. John's University in Queens, New York; a Master's in Public Administration from City College of New York; and graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Washington D.C.
- His father, Patrick Murphy Sr.; and his brothers, Andrew Murphy and John Murphy were all New York City Police Officers. He joined the New York City Police Department in 1945 after flying for the United States Navy bombers during World War II.
- He moved to Wilmington, North Carolina in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Martha E. Cameron Murphy of Wilmington, North Carolina; five sons, Gerard R. Murphy; Patrick Murphy Jr.; Kevin Murphy; Paul Murphy; and Mark Murphy; three daughters, Sallie Murphy Kelley; Eileen Murphy Karaml and Anne Murphy Zabriskie; two sisters, Mary Murphy and Sheila Murphy Barry; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
