With a dour acoustic guitar line that recalls David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and, of course, Portishead, Beth Gibbons assumes full doomsayer mode to remind you, “Forever ends, you will grow old,” on “Lost Changes.” The single is the last to arrive ahead of the Portishead frontwoman’s solo debut, Lives Outgrown, which comes out Friday.
Fortuitously for everyone who listens, Gibbons already warned us the affair would be bleak, since she made the album as she came to terms with the deaths of close friends and family. “I realized what...

The gasps in Fontaines D.C.’s new song, “Starburster,” tell its whole story: Frontman Grian Chatten suffered a panic attack in a London tube station and decided to chronicle that feeling on a funky, disco-rock track. After refrains of “It may feel bad,” he unleashes an onslaught of stream-of-consciousness worries, including “I wanna bite the phone, I wanna bleed the tone/I wanna see you alone, alone, alone.” The drums keep things going on the song, which will appear on their upcoming fourth album, Romance (out Aug. 23), until he comes to the realization,...

Fontaines D.C. have unveiled details for their fourth album, Romance, due out August 23rd via Xl Recordings. As a preview, the band has unveiled the lead single, “Starburster.” Watch the music video for the new song below.
Romance follows the band’s celebrated 2022 release Skinty Fia and seeks to further push Fontaines D.C. into new sonic and thematic territory. Incorporating elements of hip-hop, shoegaze, grunge, and more, the album continues the Irish act’s reflections on nationality, identity, and notions of idealism. Notably, Romance also marks the band’s first collaboration with Consequence’s 2023 Producer of the Year James Ford.
“We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance,” guitarist Conor Deegan stated. “Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as Dogrel. The second album (A Hero’s Death) is about that detachment, and the third (Skinty Fia) is...

Pet Shop Boys covered David Bowie’s “All The Young Dudes” for the BBC Radio 2—with a little help from the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe performed the rock anthem at Maida Vale Studios on February 23rd, along with their new single “Loneliness” and ’80s hit “Left to My Own Devices.” The special set closed out BBC Radio 2’s Piano Month 2024.
Bowie famously wrote “All The Young Dudes” for English rock band Mott the Hopple in 1972, and it went on to become the band’s biggest hit and signature song. The Thin White Duke also recorded his own version of the glam rock tune (not released until 1995’s Rarestonebowie), and Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) had a minor hit with a cover off of his debut solo album, 1990’s Tattooed Millionaire.

Portishead singer Beth Gibbons has officially announced her long-awaited debut solo album.
Set to premiere on May 17th via Domino, Lives Outgrown was produced by Gibbons with James Ford, and features 10 new tracks recorded over the course of the past decade. In a new press release, Gibbons touched on the album’s themes of motherhood, anxiety, menopause, and mortality.
“People started dying,” Gibbons said. “When you’re young, you never know the endings, you don’t know how it’s going to pan out. You think, ‘We’re going to get beyond this. It’s going to get better.’ Some endings are hard to digest… I realized what life was like with no hope, and that was a sadness I’d never felt. Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you’re up against your body, you can’t make it do something it doesn’t want to do.

It was a clean sweep for Taylor Swift at the 2024 Gold Derby Music Awards. She came into our fourth annual event with nine nominations and walked away with nine victories including Artist of the Year for the fourth year in a row. Watch the announcement video above for winners in all categories, and scroll down for the complete list.
In the history of the GDMAs thus far, Swift is the only artist who has won Artist of the Year. She’s also the only artist who has won Record of the Year and Song of the Year. But her Album of the Year victory for “Midnights” is only her second in that race. She previously won in 2021 for “Folklore,” but Lana Del Rey claimed that honor in 2022 for “Chemtrails Over the Country Club” and Beyonce prevailed in 2023 for “Renaissance.”

Pet Shop Boys have announced the release of a new album called Nonetheless, which is set for release on April 26th. The forthcoming project was produced by James Ford — our 2023 Producer of the Year — and marks Pet Shop Boys’ return to their longtime label home at Parlophone. As a preview, the band has shared the lead single, “Loneliness.”
Nonetheless features 10 new songs recorded and mixed in London last year with Ford. In a statement, the duo of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe said, “We wanted this album to be a celebration of the unique and diverse emotions that make us human. From the more dance-orientated tracks to the raw poignancy of the introspective ballads, with their beautiful string arrangements, each track tells a story and contributes to the overall narrative of the album.”
Nonetheless will be released through Parlophone, where Pet Shop Boys previously called home from 1985-2012. Pre-orders are now ongoing.

Carly Rae Jepsen has officially released her seventh studio album, The Loveliest Time. Stream it below.
Featuring production from former-Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij, the album boasts some of the uber-singable pop hooks and danceable tracks you’d expect from Jepsen. The James Ford-produced single, “Shy Boy,” which dropped last month, was evidence of this, offering an irresistibly catchy chorus.
Jepsen first announced the album earlier this month, explaining that it will be a thematic follow-up to her 2022 album, the similarly-titled The Loneliest Time. “It’s sort of the completion to The Loneliest Time,” she said in a statement. “I had these fantasies that I wanted to put to song about what it would be like when the world opened up and we could travel again and fall madly in love and live life like it’s an adventure. So, I’m really looking forward to this next project,...

Jessie Ware’s 2020 release What’s Your Pleasure was one of the early pandemic’s great revelations — a pop album that successfully brought the movement, yearning, and euphoria of the dance club into everyone’s homes. It was a perfect setting for the British singer and songwriter’s voice, luxurious and sophisticated but still highly accessible.
Ware’s follow-up to that achievement, titled That! Feels Good! in Shania Twain house punctuation style, zeroes in on the many pleasures of dance music. Bodies and bodily sensations are emphasized, while inhibitions are...

“Moderation” – which Florence and the Machine recently began performing live – is a rumbling piano-driven tune that finds frontwoman Florence Welch confronting a tepid lover with her unmistakable powerhouse vocals. “You got me looking for validation,” Welch sings, “That’s just me and you/Want me to love you in moderation/Well, who do you think you’re talking to?”
