After his father, a car salesman, had left the family, he was raised by his mother Mary alone, saying she lost control of him when he was young.
Lives with his wife Maia and their three sons Connor Hirst (born in 1995), Francis (born in 2002) and Cyrus (born in 2007) in a 300 year old remote farmhouse in north Devon.
