Politico’s Jonathan Martin and Andy Burns bring word today that the U.S. Ambassador to China, Jon Huntsman, may soon abdicate his diplomatic duties for purposes of staging a 2012 presidential bid. Telltale signs of Huntsman’s intentions include, among other things, a meeting with John McCain, the senior Arizona senator who’s been unsuccessfully running for president on and off since 1999. According to Politico, “n a discussion with the senator, who is the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, about a variety of issues, Huntsman made plain that he was eyeing a White House campaign in the near term, according to a source close to the senator.” Politico also reports that White House chief of staff William Daley and other White House staffers have reportedly assigned Huntsman the nickname of “the Manchurian Candidate”—a deliciously piquant epithet, given Huntsman’s current post in China....

As many Republicans are uncomfortable with the influx and prominence of fiery populist newcomers, so too are Republican-ish media organizations. Politico, unlike Fox News, has positioned itself contra Sarah Palin, and has, particularly recently, published several highly critical pieces about the former Alaska governor. And Palin, historically a darling in the right-leaning media, has responded with rancor. On October 21, Politico’s Jonathan Martin published a piece chronicling Palin’s occasional difficulty scheduling appearances with midterm candidates. Titled “Hurricane Sarah,” the anecdote-heavy article argued that “the former Alaska governor wreaks havoc on campaign logistics and planning. Politico wrote an article today entitled "Immigration pushes Meg Whitman rightward," detailing how primaries force Republican candidates to trend more and more conservative than their original intent. But it's the first few paragraphs that contain the biggest kicker - Jonathan Martin recounts a discussion California Gop gubernatorial candidate Whitman had with the site in which she accused her opponent Steve Poizner of "playing hot-button politics with the divisive issue of immigration" by using images of a border fence, something she would never do.
