"All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town." -- Leo Tolstoy
Two of today's hottest shows -- Tracker and Reacher -- are keeping the tradition of the "traveling stranger" alive and well by providing comfort viewing with a kick.
There has always been room on television for the archetype of the helpful loner traveling from town to town.
In the 1960s, James Garner's Maverick featured a wisecracking cowboy poker player with a heart of gold.
That show's campy cousin, The Wild, Wild West, had two Secret Service agents in tight trousers solving cross-country crimes from a swanky steam engine (the original Airstream?).
In the 1970s, The Incredible Hulk put a contemporary spin on the traveling stranger theme, complete with that decade's anxiety over nuclear power.

NFL Sunday Ticket subscriber Leo Tolstoy once wrote, “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” That’s an apt summation of the New England Patriots during their championship run in the first two decades of this century. There were six Super Bowl wins, but everyone — particularly quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick — seemed to be on an endless deployment aboard the Hms Misery. Proud of their accomplishments? Absolutely. Enjoyed the ride? Not so much. Eventually, Brady jumped ship for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Apple TV+’s docuseries “Dynasty” has devoted 10 episodes to the Patriots of quarterback Tom Brady, coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft. The series is a fascinating if overlong examination — an episode on temporary Qb Matt Cassel feels like a preseason telecast — of the formidable business question: If an organization is questing for eternal excellence, does that mean...

Del Castillo, who plays the titular role in the hit Spanish-language adaptation of “La Reina del Sur” will also star in the upcoming series based on the Mexican revolution.
“I am extremely excited to join forces once again with Arturo Pérez-Reverte, especially in a story set in my country. For well over over five decades, Christopher Plummer was one of our most esteemed and honored actors across all acting fields. He hwon two Tony awards (out of seven nominations) for his stage work — the musical “Cyrano” (1974) and the one-man show “Barrymore” (1997), which was later turned into a film. For his television work, he has also won two Emmy Awards (out of six nominations) for the TV movie “Arthur Hailey’s The Moneychangers” (1977) and for his voice-over performance in the animated “Madeline” (1994).
But similar awards for his work in film eluded him for many years. True, he did co-star in 1965’s “The Sound of Music,” a film he had disdained for the longest time but one that was a phenomenon at the box-office. The musical ran in theaters for over 4 1/2 years and, adjusted for inflation, “The Sound of Music” has grossed $2.366 billion, currently making it the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

There is a lot of talk about a potential war, and the police has been asked to haul all vagrants from the streets with a vague explanation that civilians without identity impose a national threat. The men are brought to a local mental clinic where they are sedated and kept for months and then discharged with a bunch of pills, just in time to make space for the new lot. Tovino Tomas plays a man who was put in such an institution for no other reason than leaving his house to do some errands, and running into the wrong kind of uniformed guys. Upon his release, he returns to a settlement made out of old train wagons somewhere in the countryside, in an area impacted by the heavy industry. He discovers a new, not that pleasant type of neighbor living in the wagon opposite of his, but the times are difficult enough,...

As Leo Tolstoy wrote, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” I would go on to add that the particular ways that your family is unhappy define significant parts of a person’s being, crafting traits and peccadilloes and teaching them how to interact with others. The family dynamics are fully displayed in “Tótem,” director Lila Avilés’ follow-up to her debut, 2018’s “The Chambermaid.”

After receiving massive appreciation for ‘Country of Blind,’ the internationally acclaimed director, Rahhat Shah Kazmi, is back with a Hindi comedy web series titled, ‘Shakkar Masala’, and called it a labour of love and dedication. Based on Leo Tolstoy’s story, Rahhat is the creator, show-runner, writer and producer of the series, while Shoib Naksh Shah dons the director’s hat.
‘Shakkar Masala’ takes a seemingly simple situation, a fight over a hen’s egg, and transforms it into a full-blown feud between two families.
The enmity between them becomes so intense that it leads them to the brink of losing everything just to keep the rivalry alive.
Talking about the same, Rahhat said: “Creating ‘Shakkar Masala’ has been a labour of love and dedication. Following the success of ‘Country of Blind,’ we wanted to offer something truly unique and memorable.”

Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile, did not have a smooth ride. Its release was delayed several times due to first Disney buying the studio that made the film, 20th Century Fox, and then the Covid pandemic, and its cast turned out to be a Pandora’s Box of, at best, bad PR and at worst, criminal allegations.
Back in 2020 then, when Branagh was filming his autobiographically inspired family drama, Belfast, a third Hercule Poirot film wasn’t necessarily a given. Though Agatha Christie’s estate and Branagh were keen to make further sequels to 2017 hit Murder on the Orient Express, the next Christie movie had yet to be greenlit.
That uncertainty inspired Branagh to tuck a Poirot Easter Egg into Belfast as “an offering to the gods,” as he told The Hollywood Reporter. “They can tell us, in the end, if we’ll be allowed to make it.

Love in the Blood: Beau Resurrects Russian Vampire Clan in Eccentric Genre Throwback
Chuck Palahniuk wrote it best, referencing an ‘old saying’ in his 1996 novel Fight Club regarding how ‘you always kill the one you love.’ It’s certainly the sentiment ensnaring a crumbling aristocratic family in Adrien Beau’s delightfully vintage debut The Vourdulak, based on an 1841 novella by Aleksey Konstantinovich Tolstoy. The new biographical drama “Golda” features Helen Mirren in a transformative role as Golda Meir, the so-called “Iron Lady of Israel” who faced high-stakes responsibilities and decisions during the Yom Kippur War. Written by Nicholas Martin and directed by Guy Nattiv, the Bleecker Street contender is Mirren’s first big play at a potential Academy Award nomination in many years, so let’s look back at her four Oscar races.
With a career in film going back to the 1960s, Mirren saw her first Oscar nomination in 1994 in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in “The Madness of King George.” Directed by Nicholas Hytner, this biographical comedy-drama tells the story of King George III and how his Lieutenants tried to adjust the rules to run the country after he went mad. As Leo Tolstoy wrote, all happy families are alike, while each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. The rich cry too and there is something universal about the rivalries between the loved and the unloved wives, sons and heirs, regardless of their social status. So, why would the family of the sugar plantation owners in the Dutch East Indies in Ena Sendijarević's sophomore feature “Sweet Dreams” be any different? The film has just world-premiered at Locarno, where we also caught it.
Sweet Dreams is screening in Locarno Film Festival

The series has come to be characterised largely by Tom Cruise’s spectacular stunts – but what sets them apart are Ethan Hunt’s very human qualities
Everyone knows Leo Tolstoy’s line about unhappy families, but few are familiar with his lesser known first draft: every insane PhD student goes insane in their own special way.
In my case, this involved watching about 15 different Hollywood action movies over and over again; by the final fortnight before submission, I had the same films playing in a separate tab while I wrote, like background music. A major aspect of my PhD (explaining my exact thesis would take longer than this particular mission briefing has time for) involved exploring the different ways in which Hollywood action films convey emotion through spectacle. Among the films I watched and rewatched were the Mission: Impossible films, which ended up being perhaps the key-est of my key...

Back in the early '90s, television audiences were treated to "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" — which have now been retitled "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones." These adventures explored the earliest adventures of everyone's favorite archeologist, long before he chose that as his profession.
The series is split with two actors playing Indy. The youngest, Corey Carrier, gets to examine Indiana Jones in his school days, whisked around the world by his parents with a tutor in tow. Those episodes put him in contact with everyone from Theodore Roosevelt to Pablo Picasso and were nothing short of charming. Sean Patrick Flanery took the role of Indiana Jones during his late teens and early 20s, a sliver of the part that was originated by River Phoenix in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
Originally, each episode was bookended with an intro and outro from a one-eyed, 80-year-old Indiana Jones played by George Hall.

The old Leo Tolstoy adage illuminates that "each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." In the span of its four seasons, "Succession" focused on a particular miserable American clan, the obscenely wealthy and influential Roys.
The show charted the schemes and (self-)sabotages of the Roy children as they warred over their potential inheritance: CEO control of the Waystar RoyCo media company, run by their (now-late) patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox). Across toxic intrigue and backstabbing, the three kids, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook), fought tooth and nail for the throne.
In the wake of Logan's death and the series finale, the Roy family tree is still not doing all right. There are tantalizing questions about the third-generation Roys, the grandkids, who are more vulnerable under their family dysfunction and the world order that their Roy forebearers enabled. While the finale does not...

Remember “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”? No, not the opening sequence of “The Last Crusade” starring River Phoenix as a teenage version of Harrison Ford’s iconic archeologist. We’re talking about the short-lived ’90s series starring Sean Patrick Flanery as the title character. The two-season curiosity has been mostly left behind in its decade, but now Disney has acknowledged it — and is putting it on Disney+, no less.
The news was announced out of The Walt Disney Company’s Upfronts Presentation on Tuesday afternoon. The show will be available to stream on Disney+ starting May 31, in anticipation of the release of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in theaters next month. In addition, all four of the initial “Indiana Jones” movies — “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Temple of Doom,” “The Last Crusade,” and “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” — will also be added to the streamer, after...
