After “Barbenheimer” rocked the 2023 theatrical release calendar, what will keep the moviegoing momentum pushing forward next year?
Consumers gave some indication in an annual survey from online ticketing giant Fandango, whose users voted on their most anticipated films of 2024. The ranking discusses films at large and drills down into genres and individual performances.
“Deadpool 3,” which will team foulmouthed hero Ryan Reynolds with longtime faux-nemesis Hugh Jackman as his X-Men character Wolverine, comes in at number one. The Marvel Studios project is set to open in the thick of summer blockbuster season on July 26, and will mark the first time a Deadpool project has been produced by Walt Disney Studios after its 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
Close behind is Tim Burton’s long-gestating sequel to “Beetlejuice,” which reunites Winona Ryder with Michael Keaton and introduces “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega to the cinematic family. “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” “Dune: Part Two,...

Deadpool 3, Beetlejuice 2 and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire top Fandango’s list of most-anticipated wide-release movies in 2024. (See the full top 10 and other charts below.)
The NBCUniversal-owned digital movie brand surveyed 8,000 ticket buyers about the titles they’re most looking forward to, and also gauged their mood heading into next year. About 81% of respondents say they are more excited about films in 2024 than they were heading into 2023, with 88% declaring their intention to go to multiple films.
The mindset of the moviegoer has been difficult to discern in recent years as Covid and the streaming boom upended decades of traditional business methods. Theatrical moviegoing has gradually reasserted its potential as a profit source, but studios still appear likely to release fewer films next year, in part due to the strikes. The Fandango charts also show that Hollywood has become ever more reliant on familiar IP. After the Deadpool, Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters franchise installments,...

The Minions are about the get the white glove treatment, as Variety has learned that CAA has signed Illumination CEO and prolific animation producer Chris Meledandri as a client.
Meledandri, who founded the company and is responsible for two of the four highest-grossing animated franchises of all time, will be represented by a team including the agency’s co-chairman Bryan Lourd.
Illumination has an exclusive financing and distribution partnership with Universal Pictures, most recently delivering this year’s $1.3 billion baby “Super Mario Bros.” starring Chris Pratt and Anya-Taylor Joy. The venture’s most successful project, “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” grossed $940 million worldwide. The Minions films feature the voice of Steve Carell as the hapless villain Gru, and they have spawned six movies including spinoffs. The unit has amassed over $9 billion in global ticket sales and has drawn stars like Sandra Bullock and Kristen Wiig. Universal has an ownership stake in the Illumination brand.

Anime is more popular than ever. The accessibility of streaming and simulcasting make it easier than ever to be up to date with new shows as they air in Japan. Likewise, there are many big celebrities being open about their admiration for the medium and how they pull inspiration from it, raising awareness to even bigger crowds. Artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Jamie Lee Curtis talked about their love for anime, Samuel L Jackson produced "Afro Samurai" and even Michael B. Jordan directly referenced anime when making "Creed 3."
And yet, it is arguably "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" that makes it official: anime is mainstream now. While filmmakers like Jordan Peele have long drawn inspiration from anime, we haven't really seen a project from a franchise as well-known as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" not only reference an anime show but actually make it a part of the plot -- until now.

With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” riding high to the tune of $1.3 billion in global receipts, and as Pharrell Williams lay in the wings to offer the producer a lifetime achievement award, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri made sure to direct the lion’s share of attention to “Migration” director Benjamin Renner as the pair sat before a packed auditorium at the Annecy Animation Festival on Wednesday.
Taking the stage after premiering 25 minutes of “Migration” footage, Meledandri stepped (quite adeptly) into the role of interviewer, putting Renner in the spotlight and peppering the French filmmaker with questions about inspiration and artistry. If the interest was genuine, it was also no doubt strategic, as Meledandri inferred to Variety in an interview following the presentation.
“I would love for people to hear [directly] from Benjamin about his process and his intention,” said Meledandri. “That’s a very old fashioned idea — to get the filmmaker out there.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theaters closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that brink, the studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Summer 1993. Dinosaurs ruled the world again in more ways than one as Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park devoured the box office in June of that summer. And that was despite being strangely unfancied after the director’s run of form that year and the big leaps needed to make the film work. Instead, it famously took down Arnold Schwarzenegger and Last Action Hero, released the weekend after. But it wasn’t the only film with dinosaurs in it that summer, as there was the small matter of the long-awaited Super Mario Bros a few weeks earlier but they were made extinct even quicker.

Easter weekend will see the arrival of one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year, Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which should easily earn the best opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation. And in doing so, it will cement Universal as the new king of animation after years of dominance by Disney.
In an effort to take advantage of the holiday and overwhelming pre-release buzz, Universal is releasing this adaptation of the world-famous Nintendo series on Wednesday. Pre-release tracking is predicting a five-day opening of $125 million while Universal’s projection is a tad lower at $110 million. Independent projections for the Friday-Sunday period are starting at $75 million, which would top the video game adaptation record set last year by “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” with $72.1 million.
Reviews have been quite tepid with an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 46%. But at least on opening weekend, the...

Julia Roberts and George Clooney landed at the top of the international box office chart this weekend as Universal/Working Title’s Ticket to Paradise expanded its offshore rollout. Adding 39 markets for a 12.1M session in 46 lifted the overseas cume to 14.8M with several majors still to come; domestic begins on October 21. Collectively, the new markets this session performed above Last Christmas and Yesterday, and in line with The Lost City and Bridget Jones’s Baby.
The reteam of Roberts and Clooney is the second starry romantic comedy to hit cinemas this year, after Paramount’s Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum adventure The Lost City which ultimately grossed about 191M globally. That film followed a more staggered release pattern overseas, largely debuting after domestic.
While we’re still seeing a dearth of new titles overseas, the current corridor is fertile ground for comedy in some markets, thus the pre-domestic release on the Ol Parker-directed Ticket.

Similar to recent weeks, we’re still in a holding pattern at the international box office, awaiting major new wide studio releases. There were a few milestones this session, however, and Japan has in general been a bright spot with local pic One Piece Film: Red and the continued thrum of Top Gun: Maverick while the market does the bulk of the lifting to potentially push Jurassic World Dominion across the 1B mark worldwide.
Universal/Amblin’s six-film Jurassic franchise has crossed the 6B mark globally. The current installment, Jurassic World Dominion, is now at a worldwide tally of 990.4M through Sunday. As we noted last weekend, Japan was the last major market to release, and may be the swing on whether the Jwd dino-meter clicks past 1B. The market was the top holdover with a 25 drop in its 5th frame, for a 40.9M local cume.

Steve Carell has taken on plenty of memorable roles in his life, from the depressed scholar Frank in "Little Miss Sunshine" to the sexually frustrated Andy in "The 40-year old Virgin" to sweet supervillain Gru in "Despicable Me." Yet no matter how many great performances he puts in, he'll always be known first and foremost to many people as Michael Scott from "The Office." The tactless, cringe-inducing, hilarious boss of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company is the sun around which all the show's workplace chaos revolves.
"The Office" wouldn't have succeeded without Carell's faux-sly glances to camera, perfectly uncomfortable line deliveries, and contagious outbursts of laughter. Yet as with so many great roles, it almost went to someone else. In fact, lots of familiar names were considered for the role.

"Minions: The Rise of Gru," the latest film featuring the sentient horde of henchmen with a Twinkie-visage, took theaters by storm this summer. The storm, of course, was made of two things: money (it made a lot) and bespoke-suited gentlemen, who hooted and hollered their enthusiastic way through many-a-screening. Beyond the viral TikTok trends, the flash-mobs, and the theatrical theatrics is the 1970s-set story of an early-career Gru (once again voiced by Steve Carell), a supervillain aspirant who idolizes the nefarious group the Vicious 6. We watch Gru hatch yet another master plan, while his ever-loyal Minions help him build his first lair, build their first weapons, ultimately...

Judging by the early box office receipts, the studio’s strategy has been paying off. Released July 1 in the U.S., “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” which is directed by Kyle Balda, broke domestic B.O. records for the biggest opening ever over Fourth of July weekend. The film...

There’s nothing “Despicable” about this adorable theater trend. But disturbing and distracting? Maybe.
Following the box office domination of “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” select theaters have issued bans to audiences wearing formal attire when attending screenings of the children’s animated film. Why? Well, it’s all due to a TikTok trend.
The viral “Minions” fandom has evolved into a squad of “gentleminions,” or people wearing suits to screenings. The Independent reported that some of those fans have cheered, clapped, shouted, and mocked the Minion voices in theaters, disrupting those who wanted to watch the film in peace. Certain cinemas have also had to issue refunds for audience members displeased with their in-person viewing experience after the film premiered in theaters July 1.
A Vue Cinema in Worcester shared they had to issue £1,300 worth of refunds in just one day due to complaints. An Odeon cinema location issued a...

Box office watchers were worried that family audiences had all but forgotten about movie theaters… until Gru and his mischievous yellow friends came along. As it turns out, parents with young kids weren’t abandoning their local cinemas in the wake of the pandemic. Most of them just didn’t care to watch Disney’s Pixar film “Lightyear.”
That’s the takeaway after “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” the fifth installment in Universal and Illumination’s popular “Despicable Me” franchise, put box office expectations to shame, opening to 125 million over the extended July 4th holiday weekend. It comes a few weeks after “Lightyear” struggled to stir enthusiasm with its 51 million debut. After three weeks on the big screen, the latest Pixar movie has grossed just 106 million at the domestic box office, less than “Minions 2” generated in three days.

Minions: The Rise of Gru has a surprising demo to thank for setting off fireworks at the July Fourth box office with one of the best animated tentpole openings in history: Male teenagers and younger male adults.
The TikTok meme #GentleMinions has been gaining strength throughout the long holiday weekend as male Generation Z’ers showed up at cinemas in dress suits and scarves — the go-to uniform for the supervillain Gru — to watch the latest entry in the Despicable Me franchise. Some of the videos posted on social media even show the crowd bowing to Minion standees situated in the lobby.
“This is what happens when a generation grows up with a franchise,” says one insider close to the movie. Universal president of domestic distribution Jim Orr added, “The movie is playing to a very broad audience, as well to families and the very young.

Those little yellow guys racked up some serious green over the red-white-and-blue weekend.Minions: The Rise of Gru, the fifth and latest installment in Universal’s hit Despicable Me franchise, debuted to a stunning 108.5 million in its first three days of domestic release and is currently on pace to make 127.9 million by the time the Monday holiday is over—a number that would push it past 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon (115.9 million) as the biggest Fourth of July debut ever in North America.
The box-office fireworks sparked by the pint-sized pranksters signaled an encouraging rebound for animated family films in the wake of Lightyear’s disappointing opening for Disney last month. The first standalone Minions film bowed to 115.7 over three days back in the summer of 2015, and The Rise of Gru, which traces how Gru evolved from a mischievous young boy into a grown-up supervillain, seems to have more or less matched that performance.

Universal is having a great 4th of July weekend so far, with three movies in the top five at the box office. The latest entry of its long-running “Minions” animation franchise, “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” far surpassed all expectations and projections to win the weekend with an estimated 108.5 million over the three days, not including Monday. That’s less than the 115.7 million made by 2015’s “Minions” but quite a bit more than the 72.3 million opening for 2017’s “Despicable Me 3.”
Although critics were mixed on the movie, rating it with 72 Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, that was better than the previous two installments, and audiences seemed to enjoy it more, going by the 91 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and its “A” CinemaScore.
A prequel boasting the origin story of Steve Carell’s villainous Gru, “The Rise of Gru” brought in 48.2 million on Friday with 10.8 million of that coming from Thursday previews,...

Tiny yellow creatures are taking over the international box office.
“Minions: The Rise of Gru” ignited to 93.7 million from 61 overseas markets and notched one of the biggest pandemic-era opening weekends for an animated film in many of those territories.
Those returns take the fifth installment in Universal and Illumination’s popular “Despicable Me” franchise past 200 million at the global box office. In North America, “The Rise of Gru” debuted to 108 million over the weekend and looks to reach 127.9 million through Independence Day on Monday.
Outside of the U.S. and Canada, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” enjoyed the strongest showing in the United Kingdom and Ireland with 12.9 million, followed by Mexico with 12.4 million and Germany with 4.8 million. Other top-grossing markets include Spain with 3.6 million, Brazil with 3.2 million, Indonesia with 3.4 million and Argentina with 3.3 million.

Update, writethru: Coming in slightly above the estimates we reported on Saturday, Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru has boogied to an 87.2M weekend at the international box office. That lifts the offshore cume to 93.7M for 202.2M worldwide to date.
The Rise Of Gru, the latest entry in the globe’s biggest animated franchise, had previously bowed in Australia last weekend and this frame added another 60 markets. In the fresh hubs, the debut was 81.5M.
In like-for-likes at today’s exchange rates, the new openers are 23 below Minions and 13 below Despicable Me 3. Including Australia, results in Week 2 are tracking 13 below Minions and just 3 below DM3. France, Japan, Korea and Italy are still to unleash the little fellows.

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” may be filled with familiar, uh, faces of the lovable yellow creatures, but it transports them back to the 1970s, when Gru (still voiced by Steve Carell) was a supervillian in training and the Minions were looking to fit into his burgeoning world.
The latest installment of the popular franchise from Universal and Illumination was directed by Kyle Balda, himself a veteran of the world of the Minions and a child of the ’70s. The animation team had to distill tons of research of the colors, the music, the architecture, clothes and hairstyles of the mid-1970s for the film, which follows elementary school student Gru as he applies to join the Vicious 6, a team of supervillians, but of course, events, with the help of the Minions, go awry.

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” set off fireworks at the box office, collecting 108 million over the weekend. By the time that July 4th rolls around on Monday, the animated family film is expected to reach a sizable 127.9 million.
Based on those estimates, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” will smash the record for the highest film opening over Independence Day, overtaking Paramount’s 2011 blockbuster “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” (115.9 million over four days).
Ticket sales for the fifth installment in Universal and Illumination’s popular “Despicable Me” franchise are a comforting sign that family crowds haven’t entirely forgotten about movie theaters. Hollywood had been looking at “Minions: The Rise of Gru” to test the viability of animated flicks on the big screen after moviegoers with young kids — a demographic that’s vital in driving overall box office revenues — had returned only in fits and starts.

Saturday Update: Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru is lighting up at the global and international box office, set to be the current frame’s No. 1 film domestically, overseas and worldwide through Sunday. Gru and the crew are now out in 61 offshore markets, having released early in Australia and adding such majors as Mexico, Brazil, Germany, the UK and Spain through yesterday.
The estimated worldwide cume through Sunday is eyed at 202.16M. Of that, overseas is expected to rep 92.7M. In this weekend’s new markets only, the launch is 81M. Coming into the session, projections were at 70M+, so this is a great bump. The full frame estimates on new markets (excluding previews) are tracking about 20 below 2015’s Minions and 13 behind 2017’s Despicable Me 3 at today’s exchange rates. Meanwhile, the TikTok “Minions In Suits” challenge which we told you about yesterday (see below), continues to go viral.

It’s official —the Minions are back.
Universal’s “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is setting off fireworks at the Fourth of July box office, projecting a 129.2 million opening over the four-day holiday weekend from 4,400 locations. On a three-day scale, the “Despicable Me” prequel looks to gross 109.4 million — that number would mark the highest domestic opening for an animated film since 2019’s “Frozen 2,” representing a huge bounce back for family-friendly films after lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Illumination Entertainment production took off to an explosive 10.75 million in Thursday previews, initially setting projections for the long holiday weekend in the range of 65 million to 75 million. “The Rise of Gru” is now nearly doubling those estimates.
Should the “Minions” sequel fulfill its current projections, the film will shatter the Fourth of July weekend box office record. Paramount’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” currently stands as the highest grossing...

Let the fireworks begin.
The long July 4th holiday weekend is turning into a bonanza for Hollywood as Minions: The Rise of Gru heads for a huge four-day opening of 129.2 million domestically, according to early estimates. That includes 109.5 million for the three days. (Some rivals think it has a shot at approaching 140 million by the end of Monday.)
Overseas, the movie will cross 86 million by Sunday for a global booty of 200 million-plus.
Forget about breaking pandemic-era records for a family title; the Illumination and Universal movie will boast one of the top starts ever at the domestic box office for an animated Hollywood tentpole, not adjusted for inflation.
Friday’s haul alone was around 48 million from 4,400 theaters, including a hefty 10.8 million in previews.
The movie’s performance is significant in that it confirms that parents and younger kids are ready to return to the multiplex in droves.

Gru and the minions are back in an all new blast from the past adventure. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” takes viewers back to Gru’s childhood where, on the brink of adolescence, Gru wants nothing more than to join The Sinister Six, a group of villains notorious for their collaboration in crime.
The adventures of all these characters as well as the minions are backed by a reimagined soundtrack full of ’70s hits.
Produced by Jack Antonoff, the soundtrack includes St. Vincent’s rendition of Lipps Inc’s 1979 hit “Funkytown,” H.E.R.’s version of “Dance to the Music” from Sly and the Family Stone in 1967, Bleachers’ rendition of John Lennon’s 1970 song “Instant Karma” and Phoebe Bridgers’ version of The Carpenters’ 1972 ballad “Goodbye to Love.” Even the Minions get a few spotlight moments like when they sing Paul Simon’s “Cecelia.”

Illumination and Universal’s July 4th event movie Minions: The Rise of Gru began landing in select North American theaters Thursday afternoon, grossing an excellent 10.8 million in previews from 3,350 locations.
By Friday, the family animated pic will be playing in approximately 4,400 theaters in the U.S and Canada. The movie — which saw its release delayed by more than a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic — will test the strength of the family box office just weeks after Pixar and Disney’s Lightyear failed to soar into the stratosphere.
The Rise of Gru is a sequel to 2015’s Minions and is the fifth entry in the Despicable Me franchise, which is the top-grossing animated series in history, not adjusted for inflation.
Tracking suggests that Minions 2 will open in the 70 million to 80 million range for the four-day holiday, but the strength of previews means it could well come in higher.

If you’ve spent any time on social media over the past decade, you’re likely familiar with the Minions, the adorable, rotund yellow henchmen figures popularized by Illumination Entertainment’s hugely successful Despicable Me franchise. In the movies, with the latest entry Minions: The Rise of Gru opening July 1, the Minions serve as sidekicks to the archvillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) and exist solely to do his bidding. Yet on the internet, particularly Facebook, they’re frequently used in boomer memes and have become shorthand for a certain type of cringe content,...

There’s something kind of remarkable about watching a 90-minute film that only has a single idea spread across its entire running time — “what if ‘The Raid,’ but about a fairy tale princess trying to fight her way down from the castle tower where she’s been imprisoned by an evil suitor?” — but my awe at what passes for a movie these days was no match for my disappointment in this one. so undercooked that it feels like an AMC psy-op designed to make you run to the nearest multiplex and beg for a ticket to whatever’s showing next. Even Gru feels good in a place like this.
While survivors of Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth” trilogy may be conditioned to expect as much from the latest Joey King vehicle (though she hardly feels responsible for this mess), anyone familiar with Le-Van Kiet’s bone-crunching “Furie” is liable to...

Get ready to meet the famous faces behind your favorite animated film characters. From Disney princesses and a master of Minions to four-legged friends and more, you might be surprised to learn which celebrities have lent their voices to some of the most iconic movie characters in recent history. We can't imagine anyone but Steve Carell and his unmistakable accent bringing the lovable villain Gru to life in the Despicable Me and Minions movies. Then there's Frozen's Anna and Elsa—played by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel respectively—whose singing voices are basically universally recognized at this point by children and adults alike. It takes a lot of personality...

With the school summer holidays already underway for some and in sight for most children, Universal is going big with the release of Minions: The Rise Of Gru.
The Minions sequel will play in 637 sites, making it Universal’s widest ever animation release in the UK-Ireland. The first Minions film debuted at the top of the UK-Ireland box office back in 2015, taking £11.6m from 573 sites, which broke the then record for the biggest ever three-day opening for an animation.

As we enter the “middle Month” of Summer, moviegoers will finally get to see another “franchise flick” that’s been sitting on the shelf for well over two years now, much akin to the high-flying pilots that have dominated the box office. In fact a major fast-food chain offered toys based on the title characters back in June of 2020, though I’m betting those meals were still pretty happy. As you guessed this is an animated feature looking to fill the screens as that Space Ranger blasts away to a streaming service. And this is a most unusual movie for a “tent-pole” picture as it is both a prequel and a sequel…of a spin-off. Yes, it’s another look at the beginning of everybody’s favorite super-villain “wannabe” and...

Counting the three “Despicable Me” films and the one “Minions” film, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” marks the fifth film starring the yellow Twinkie-shaped henchmen of Gru. In the latest installment, we see how Gru came to be the big bad villain that he now is. Growing up in the 70s gave Gru some great music as well as six role models to look up to — known as the Sinister Six.
He really looked up to the leader of the six in particular, Wild Knuckles. Upon applying to become a member and getting accepted for an interview, Gru ventures to the Six’s headquarters beneath Criminal Records, where Dr. Nefario used to work. When Gru gets separated from the minions, four of them set out to save him, one getting separated from the pack to have an adventure up the coast of California.

Jaundiced critters wired for subservience, the Minions have become an inescapable nuisance across all entertainment media and even theme parks. Their overly simplistic design and mostly unintelligible dialect has turned them into an easily marketable brand that amuses young audiences with their frantic, infantile and irritating personalities.
Unnecessarily, their insufferable dominance expands further with a new movie, “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” from director Kyle Balda, a creator involved in this hollow animated emporium since the original “Despicable Me” film now over a decade ago.
No longer searching for a master to serve after meeting Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) at the end of 2015’s “Minions,” the first prequel in this universe, the roundish sidekicks have settled into the young villain’s home. But their ideal living situation is disturbed when their 12-year-old boss (the film is set in the 1970s) wants to join the Vicious 6, a criminal organization comprised of the most dangerous antagonists.
