A lot of really fun movies from the eighties and nineties are tough to get decent copies of. While some of the stories have happy endings, other films seem all but doomed to languish until a niche label like Arrow Video, Kino Lorber, or Unearthed Films gives them the TLC they deserve. So, what’s the title we’re worried is Gone Forever here at JoBlo? A cool little thriller (which I previously wrote up for Best Movie You Never Saw) from 1991 called Ricochet has a pretty impressive pedigree. The movie stars Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Ice-t, Kevin Pollack and The Bionic Woman herself, Lindsay Wagner, while Highlander’s Russell Mulcahy directs it, is produced by Joel Silver, and is written by Die Hard’s Steven E De Souza. In fact, Ricochet takes place in the same universe as Die Hard, with Mary Ellen Trainor reprising her role as snoopy TV reporter Gale Wallens.

Exclusive: Roadside Attractions has acquired U.S. distribution rights from City Hill Arts to the family adventure, The Penguin & The Fisherman, inspired by the incredible true story and viral sensation of João Perei de Souza (Jeno Reno) and a lost penguin who, after being rescued from an oil spill, transforms the life and soul of a heartbroken fisherman. Also starring Babel‘s Adriana Barraza, the film is set for a late summer/early fall wide release.
Lionsgate is aboard for Home Entertainment, with Fortitude International handling foreign sales.
When The Penguin & The Fisherman begins, De Souza has turned away from the world in the wake of tragedy. But when he discovers a penguin drifting alone in the ocean, drenched in oil from a spill, his first instinct is to help. To the dismay of his wife (Barraza) dismay, he not only rescues the sea creature, but takes the flightless bird under his wing.

Oh, we are just up to our ass in this debate again, John? Even 35 years after its release, 1988’s Die Hard is as cited around the holiday season as often as Home Alone and A Christmas Story. And that comes down to two sides: you either watch it every year or you argue why it’s not a Christmas movie. As it turns out, co-writer Steven E. de Souza is at least in support of those in the former camp.
Posting on social media over this holiday weekend, de Souza stated (with tongue in cheek?) that not only is Die Hard unequivocally a Christmas movie, it’s even more so than the one where Bing Crosby tap dances with Danny f*ckin’ Kaye. ““White Christmas” is universally acknowledged as a benchmark Christmas movie, so empirical evidence proves “Die Hard” is even *more* Christmas-y.”
For starters, Die Hard takes place entirely during the Christmas holiday – chiefly,...

The Golden Globes has dropped 18 voters who are former members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and will not be voting for the 81st awards, TheWrap has learned.
The Globes sent an email informing studios of the change, which was obtained by TheWrap, and did not give a reason for the change. The list included three people – Munawar Hosain, Aniko Navai and Howaida Hamdy Serour – who were expelled after investigations into violations of the Globes’ code of conduct. Two of those members, Hosain and Hamdy Serous, had been investigated by TheWrap.
All the members had been among the former HFPA members who were paid $75,000 per year under the agreement to sell the organization to Eldridge Industries.
The Globes did not respond to a request for comment on the email to studios, or to explain why the members had been dropped as voters.
The awards are scheduled to take place on Jan.

Indigo De Souza recently filmed a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR, supporting her great April 2023 album All of This Will End. Along with the video, she’s announced a short run of West Coast tour dates for 2023.
De Souza’s four-song set pulled entirely from her newest LP, kicking off with a great arrangement of “The Water” complete with saxophone, cello, and trombone. The stripped-down setting put an extra emphasis on her stunning and distinct singing voice, which also served as an endearing juxtaposition to her self-deprecating banter between songs.
“Life is like a really weird dream,” De Souza said before performing her album’s title track, sharing her gratitude for being invited onto the series. “It’s like, crazy — you just get born and then you’re just doing whatever you’re doing until you die.”
De Souza continued her slightly cheeky existential remarks as she introduced “Not My Body,...

Raleigh, North Carolina indie rockers Truth Club have announced their next album, Running from the Chase, due for release on October 6th via Double Double Whammy. Along with today’s announcement comes the new single “Exit Cycle,” which features Indigo De Souza, as well as a run of 2023 tour dates.
Truth Club have enjoyed a steady ascent since the release of their 2019 debut LP Not an Exit. Since then, the band’s three original members — singer/guitarist Travis Harrington, drummer Elise Jaffe, and guitarist/bassist Kameron Vann — added guitarist/bassist and singer Yvonne Chazal to their lineup, with a goal to “hold space for criticism, critique, input, and inspiration from the rest of the band in any context” while making their new record.
One critique Harrington felt of “Exit Cycle” was that it “needed another voice.” So, he called on De Souza — his longtime friend and fellow North Carolinian — whose...

Commando remains one of the quintessential Arnold Schwarzenegger action movies. There are the incredible set pieces and the one-liners and the scene where he feeds a deer for some reason. But major changes had to be made when it came to the ending due to the rivalry between Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.
Screenwriter Steven E. de Souza – who was one of the go-to action writers for a stretch, also penning The Running Man, Die Hard and Judge Dredd – sat down with Radio Times to let off some steam about how his script was changed following the release of Rambo: First Blood Part II, which had come out while Arnold was filming Commando. “I concurred with Arnold [that the film would be a success]. At the time it was Rambo versus Commando and those two had a rivalry for a long time, but Arnold predicted that people would still be talking about this film because it did not...

A few years ago, director Oliver Harper made a documentary called In Search of the Last Action Heroes, which was described as “a comprehensive retrospective of the ’80s and ’90s action film genre.” One of the people interviewed for that documentary was screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who was a major contributor to the action genre in those decades, working on the likes of 48 Hrs., Commando, The Running Man, Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Hudson Hawk, Ricochet, Beverly Hills Cop III, and Street Fighter, among others… with one of the others being the much-maligned Sylvester Stallone comic book movie Judge Dredd. In a moment that didn’t make it into the final cut of In Search of the Last Action Heroes, de Souza discussed the issues that Judge Dredd ran into, including bad marketing and a struggle to secure an R rating. Harper has been kind enough to share that deleted scene online,...

Track by Track is our recurring feature series in which artists guide readers through each song on their latest release. Today, Indigo De Souza takes us through her new album, All of This Will End.
Indie rocker Indigo De Souza has released her latest project, All of This Will End. Her third LP, the record finds the songwriter grappling with each aspect of herself and her sound, clawing her way to find optimism and security.
“I remember having a lot of anxiety during the day, navigating the newly awkward and uncertain experience of doing anything mid-world freakout. I was in an emotional state that felt like a cross between delirious joy and a real, tired hopelessness,” she tells Consequence of the writing experience. “When the neighborhood was asleep, and all the lawn mowers stopped, I felt free to make anything and sing anything I wanted. It was my first time ever living alone.

When Steven E. de Souza embarked on his big-screen adaptation of Capcom's arcade classic "Street Fighter II," the transformative upgrade on the ho-hum original, he painted a fire-engine red target on his back. The A-list action screenwriter of "48 Hrs.," "Commando" and "Die Hard" had more than earned the opportunity to make his directorial debut, but, in 1994, no one took video games seriously as a storytelling medium — and for good reason! Aside from role-playing computer franchises like "Ultima," "The Bard's Tale" and "Final Fantasy," most non-sports-centric games were either side-scrolling quests with the most slender of narratives or button-mashing combat competitions.
"Street Fighter II" fell in the latter camp. No one chugged Mountain Dew until sunrise because they wanted to know M. Bison's backstory; they did so to exert their console-controller primacy over their friends and dormmates. But Capcom's PvP sensation was so wildly popular that the video game...

Would you believe us if we said a hologram sponsored by the government of Ontario was one of the best things we saw on the second full day of SXSW 2023? There were plenty of flesh-and-blood performances that knocked our socks off, too, as the festival hit its stride with artists big and small from across genres and decades packing the venues that make Austin one of the greatest music cities in the world. Here are our top picks from Wednesday, March 15.

“I don’t have answers — no one does/I’ve been finding comfort in that,” Indigo De Souza sings on the title track of her third album, All of This Will End. “There’s only love/There’s only moving through and trying your best.” It’s a welcome revelation for the North Carolina-based artist, whose songs have long been marked by fervent, desperate pleas. On 2018’s I Love My Mom and 2021’s Any Shape You Take, she was a bulldozing questioner, weaponizing repetition in an attempt to get to...
