When Parasite director Bong Joon-Ho declared, “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”, he proved it by sweeping awards at the Academy ceremony. However, even after his remarkable achievement, foreign films are still underrated. The Eight Hundred is no exception. Director Guan Hu planned and prepared this movie for years, resulting in an intimate, brutal war spectacle with exquisite photography and a gripping score. Granted that history recorded the beginning of WWII in 1939, it began in 1937 with the Japanese invasion of China. Guan’s story begins with

The crime film is not exactly one known for its art-house aesthetics, as the frantic pace, the intense use of music, and the occasionally extreme violence are almost always, the traits that characterize the category. However, occasionally, and even more frequently during the latest years, we have seen a number of films that despite focusing on criminals and the whole concept of crime, implement mostly artistic aesthetics, with the focus being on them as much as on the story and characters, while the pace is most certainly slow. The quality, however, is by no means lower, as the titles we have winnowed here eloquently highlight.

France- and Dubai-based sales agency Cercamon has picked up international rights to Chinese crime drama “Streetwise,” which will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, in the Un Certain Regard section. Before that, Cercamon has released a trailer.
The film (aka “Gaey Wa’r”) is the debut feature effort of Na Jiazuo, who is a graduate of the Beijing Film Academy and had previously directed shorts. That makes “Streetwise” a candidate for the Camera d’Or awarded to the best first film in any of Cannes’ official and sidebar sections.
“Streetwise” was executive produced by Guan Hu, who directed record breaker “The Eight Hundred” and “Mister Six,” and has a track record as a discoverer and supporter of new directing talent.
The film is a detailed look at the lives and predicaments of young people in China in the early 2000s who did not migrate to the big cities.

The Shanghai International Film Festival has made an abrupt and surprising change to its program, pulling Huayi Brothers’ big-budget Chinese war drama The Eight Hundred from its lineup on the eve of the event’s kick-off. The $80M epic was due to open the proceedings tomorrow and has been expected to be the 800 lb gorilla at the Middle Kingdom summer box office. Officially, the festival says the reason for the last-minute cancellation is “technical problems,” although there is speculation surrounding censorship concerns, and whether the film maintains a July 5 release date. A source on the ground in China says the atmosphere at the festival is “intense.”

“Mr Six” is one of these extremely rare films where commercial success (more than $137 million at the box office) is combined with artistic excellence (awards in a plethora festivals), in a combination that results in one of the best productions of the latest years.

It may not boast the glitz of Cannes or provide the buzz of Sundance, but the New York Asian Film Festival — now in its 16th year — has swiftly become one of the most consistently exciting fests on the planet. Arguably the world’s best-curated program of new and classic Asian cinema, the annual showcase has made itself an increasingly essential institution by introducing American audiences to little-seen masterpieces like Park Hoon-jung’s “New World,” Derek Kwok and Clement Cheng’s “Gallants,” and Li Yu’s “Buddha Mountain” (to name three random classics from a list of dozens).

In the early minutes of Chinese director Yang Chao’s sophomore feature, a fish is thrown into a bowl of water somewhere along an anonymous riverbank, darkened with bluish hues, lit only by the gleam of fire. It’s a mightily fine shot that probably would have made a bigger impact if some recent déjà vu courtesy of The Revenant hadn’t kicked in. That said, its serene beauty and intrinsically fabulous quality set quite the visual/metaphorical stage for a surrealist exploration of nature and men. Moreover, the thought of what legendary cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-Bin – Taiwan’s answer to Lubezki, who’s lensed almost the entire filmography of Hou Hsiao-Hsien – can do with this is nothing short of mouth-watering.
Unfortunately, things kind of go downhill from there.

We’ve lamented the qualitative drop of Chinese cinema around this time last year, as Hu Guan’s glossy generational drama Mr. Six closed the Venice Film Festival on a decidedly mute note. Things aren’t looking up 12 months later, as the traditionally sinophile fest on Lido could not even save a token out-of-competition slot in its official selection for the world’s second largest film market. This came after an equally dismal showing at Cannes this May. Even taking the entire Chinese-language film world into account, whenever Taiwan’s Hou Hsiao-Hsien or Hong Kong’s Wong Kar-Wai don’t have a movie out – and those guys spend half an eternity on a project – one might be hard pressed to find the kind of artful and daring humanist fares that used to win favors from festivals everywhere.

From the late 80’s until the early 00’s, Chinese cinema has been a mainstay at A-list film festivals worldwide, picking up trophies left and right. Things changed, however, as the Mandarin film market experienced an exponential growth in the last decade, inspiring many award-winning “underground” filmmakers to go “mainstream.” While making movies for a mass audience is in itself a perfectly valid pursuit, the drastic decline in quality of these auteurs’ commercially-oriented work has been more than disheartening. Golden Bear (Red Sorghum) and two-time Golden Lion (The Story of Qiu Ju; Not One Less) winner Yimou Zhang, for example, has given us splashy CG-extravaganzas like House of Flying Daggers or Curse of the Golden Flower that are a far cry from his earlier work in terms of subtlety and insightfulness. Palme d’Or winner Kaige Chen (Farewell My Concubine) crashed and burned with the much-maligned Sacrifice; and Cannes Granx Prix...

After the initial slate for the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival was announced last month there were many observers, including this pundit, who wondered of the annual September event had once again lost the battle of premieres to its Fall festival cousins. While debuting Ridley Scott's "The Martian," Jean Marc Valle's "Demolition" and Michael Moore's "Where Do We Invade Next" is nothing to sneeze at the fact some of the most anticipated films of the year are heading to Venice and Telluride first has to be a bit disheartening. Especially when it's your 40th anniversary. Never fear fans of the Great White North, Toronto always seems to land some eyebrow raising last minute additions and this year is no different. Today Tiff announced that David Gordon Green's "Our Brand Is Crisis" with Sandra Bullock, Marc Abraham's "I Saw The Light" with Tom Hiddleston, Catherine Hardwicke's "Miss You Already...

While the Toronto International Film Festival showcases, among its lineups, genre films, Canadian films, and features from notable underseen filmmakers and countries, the festival has also become a premier destination for high-profile features, features that often go on to become major contenders during the awards circuit that follows after a few months. Director Feng Xiaogang (The Banquet, Assembly, Back To 1942) steps in front of the cameras to play the lead role in Guan Hu's Mr. Six, which has been selected as the official closing film of this year's VeniceInternational Film Festival. In it, Feng plays an ageing mobster who has turned his back on his criminal past, but is forced back into the fray when his son falls in with a rival gang. So essentially, if and when the inevitable Hollywood remake comes around, it's a Liam Neeson movie. But with Guan at the helm, who previously directed Cow and Design Of Death, Mr. Six could well turn into one of the best Chinese exports of the year. Zhang Hanyu, Kris Wu and Li Yifeng also...

With the exception of Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation and Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, the nineteen other films in Venice Film Festival’s contention for the Golden Lion won’t be mentioned during awards season, but who cares when you have the likes of Aleksander Sokurov, Luca Guadagnino and Marco Bellocchio in the line-up. Not unlike previous years, the 2015 edition has a good numbers of films from Italy and the U.S., with several France co-productions littered throughout and the addition of fresh faces with first time works from composer Piero Messina and artist/musician Laurie Anderson.

On the heels of yesterday's Toronto Film Festival announcement, this morning we get the lineup for the 2015 Venice Film Festival and, as always, there's a little crossover with some films set to premiere on the Lido ahead of their Toronto (and/or Telluride premieres). Some of the titles not screening at Toronto (at least not yet) that will premiere at Venice include Baltasar Kormakur's Everest, which is serving as the opening night film, Drake Doremus' Equals starring Kristen Stewart, A Bigger Splash from Luca Guadagnino, Go With Me directed by Daniel Alfredson, Dito Montiel's Man Down, Amy Berg's Janis as well as a new, 16-minute short film from Martin Scorsese titled The Audition and a Brian De Palma documentary directed by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow. There's also buzz building for The Childhood of a Leader directed by Brady Corbet and starring Robert Pattinson and Berenice Bejo.

The Venice Film Festival has become one of the longest-running events on the festival circuit, its veteran status giving it a level of prestige that has only been heightened by the films that have screened at the event. Having first started in 1932, a number of movies that have gone on to be classics have won prizes at the festival, including Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, Satyajit Ray’s Aparajito, and Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad. Interest in the festival’s lineup announcement has thus grown over the years, with many film fans curious to see what the organisers select to play at the event, due to its stature. The full lineup for the 2015 incarnation of the festival, the 72nd one in the festival’s history, has now been announced. The festival itself will run from September 2nd to the 12th, with a jury that includes Alfonso Cuarón, Nuri Bilge Ceylan,...

Guan Hu, writer and director of the acclaimed “Cow”, returns with another World War II set comedy drama in “The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel”, which sees the titular three rogues going up against the Japanese in Beijing to try and get their hands on a cure for cholera. Headlined by three of the country’s most popular actors, Liu Ye (“The Last Supper”), Zhang Hanyu (“Back to 1942”) and Huang Bo (“Lost in Thailand”), the film takes place mainly in the one location, and is an imaginative and constantly shifting affair that attempts to keep the viewer guessing through to the end. The film opens in 1941 in Beijing under Japanese occupation, with a strict curfew enforced and the city decimated by a cholera epidemic. A stage coach trying to pass through is ambushed and hijacked by the Scoundrel (Huang Bo), who subsequently crashes into an inn, run by proprietor the...

And the posters just keep on coming! It seems like just the other day that we got our hands on a trailer and a new poster for Guan Hu’s suspense/thriller/absurdist comedy “Design of Death”. Now we have four new designs to stare at for a few seconds, each of which features a completely different character. It would be ever cooler if these images were on nifty collectible drinking glasses that I could acquire at the nearest fast food chain, but I suppose the embedded pictures will have to suffice. Sometimes I really miss 80′s marketing gimmicks. “Design of Death” opens in Chinese theaters on April 28th,...

One website describes the film as a “horror comedy”, while another claims it’s some sort of “absurdist comedy” mixed with a little suspense. Whatever the case may be, Guan Hu’s “Design of Death” intrigues me. There’s definitely enough going on visually to pique my interest, though, to be fair, it doesn’t take much. I am curious to see how the comedy element is worked into the feature, as it doesn’t seem to be present in the embedded trailer. Maybe it’s just me. Check out this handy synopsis, courtesy of Chinese Films: Based on the novel by Chen Tiejun, the story takes place in a remote and ancient village in southwest China where people live a traditional life. Niu Jieshi is a village outcast who goes against local rules. He is trapped by the villagers in a “design of death.” When a doctor tries to save Niu,...
