Joe Marciano (aka Joe Marchiano) was one of kick-boxing's most promising fighters in the
1980s. With a lean build and blond hair, a former U.S.
Army paratrooper, he trained in kick-boxing under the guidance of the Sensi Burt Rodriguez. Marciano began his professional kick-boxing
career in North Miami, Florida and soon compiled a 12-1-0 record and a
top ten world rating in the super-lightweight division. Marciano was
noted for his relentless punching style and iron chin. From 1983-1985
he made his move and met numerous world rated contenders with mixed
results; he lost decisions to Howard Jackson (World Kickboxing
Welterweight Champion), was stopped in 3 rounds by World Kickboxing
Middleweight Champ Steve Sheppard, lost a decision to 12th rated Mark
Gurley, and dropped a nod to U.S. Lightweight Champion Yoel Judah. In
1985 on the comeback trail Marciano defeated 3 straight opponents
including a decision over David "Wild Man" Ruiz. In the March 1985 Star
System Computered World Kickboxing Ratings compiled by Paul Maslak
(future movie producer), Marciano now 18-10, with 8 knockouts was rated
20th in the world in the Super-Lightweight Division. He retired a
short-time later. Marciano claimed an impressive amateur boxing career,
winning his first 29 fights and retiring with an amateur record of 30-1. However, boxrec which compiles data on boxing records, lists Marciano's amateur boxing record as 6-8-0.
