Gold Derby caught up with Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato backstage at the 2023 edition of RuPaul’s DragCon LA, a two-day extravaganza taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center. In addition to winning five Emmy Awards for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (2018-21) and “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” (2021), they’ve also been producers of DragCon for World of Wonder since the very beginning. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“It started in 2015 so we’re in year eight, but we had a pandemic and things like that,” Bailey tells us. “But we’ve done DragCon in New York and the UK, so we’re fully in our eighth year, but in the 12th DragCon.”
What’s special about this year’s DragCon? Barbato declares, “This year we have over 150 ‘Drag Race’ queens from all over the world, so it’s like the United Nations of drag. There are so many queens.

RuPaul’s Drag Race has entertained audiences around the world since its debut in 2009, and the series has only continued to explode all over the globe with international spin-offs. Every episode of Drag Race culminates in a lip sync battle between two (or more) queens to some beloved hit songs. But throughout all those years, Beyoncé songs were notably absent from the lip syncs. In recent years, however, Bey has become a more common lip sync artist.

I have to say that in my opinion there were some very questionable choices made in last weeks lip-sync LALAPaRuza challenge. That fact that Antrea went from one of the greatest lip-sync performances in the first round against the powerhouse that is Sasha Colby only to end up all the way down to the bottom three is totally absurd. If it was up to me I would have given both Sasha and Antrea the win as the talent on display during this performance was overwhelming! What is even crazier however is the fact that when Antrea was granted the opportunity to automatically save one of her fellow queens from the final battle she opted to save the weakest performer in the competition, Spice. While I totally understand the idea of respect and artist integrity, I would have chosen to battle against Spice as it would have been an easy win.

Most of the 2022 Primetime Emmy wins were either generally expected or only slightly surprising, but almost no one anticipated the shocking Best Competition Program outcome. A whopping 91% of the thousands of Gold Derby users who made predictions for the race understandably thought “RuPaul’s Drag Race” would sail to its fifth consecutive victory, but the ones who ended up earning bragging rights were the 3% who correctly picked “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.” Five months later, RuPaul and his team are seeking their fifth PGA Award win for Best Reality Series, but they are once again faced with the challenge of having to fend off Lizzo’s squad.
These corresponding Emmy and PGA Award lineups are nearly identical, with the only difference being the exclusion of “Nailed It!” from the latter due in part to the producing guild’s set rule of five nominees per TV category. Even considering its Emmy loss,...

Murray is nominated for directing the Season 14 musical episode “Moulin Ru: The Rusical,” a technical feast that included pre-production, choreography, music, set design, lighting, camera blocking, rehearsals, etc. “We shot it over 12 hours … pretty much as live, which is a testament to the crew,” he recalls. Even though the musical episodes are obviously quite challenging, for Murray...

There’s always plenty of fun to be had on RuPaul’s Drag Race, but Season 14 of the VH1 show was a standout because of the emotional moments. And there were many.
From Jasmine Kennedie coming out as a trans woman to Willow Pill’s frankness about battling a rare chronic illness, the latest season of the reality competition that earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Competition Show was really about “the tenacity of the human spirit,” judge and senior producer Michelle Visage says.
“That’s the beauty of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It is a safe space for these kids to be authentically themselves with one another and be there for one another,” added Visage, who was joined on Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees panel with Queens Kerri Colby and Kennedie, showrunner Mandy Salangsang and executive producer Michele Mills. “That’s really at the core of what RuPaul’s Drag Race is all about.

Each week on “The Pit Stop,” Bob the Drag Queen runs down the crowning achievements of the all winners on the newest episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” alongside a guest host. Following Friday’s seventh episode, Bob was joined by season 14 champion Willow Pill to get to the bottom of Monét X Change‘s belief that Willow was a “master strategist.” Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
Ahead of their recap and review, Willow admitted to Bob that while filming she didn’t have the intent of strategizing, but watching the show back she sees how people can think that. She even described a moment during filming where the other girls asked her if she knew the lyrics to a lip sync song and she said “no” despite having performed it herself before. Willow Pill made history this year when she won season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, becoming the first disabled or chronically ill person (she’s diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder cystinosis) to take home the crown, as well as the first trans non-All Stars winner, having come out during her run on the show.
Fans were immediately captivated by the queen’s quirky sense of humor and outside-the-box runway looks, but it’s been her openness and vulnerability that carried her to the finish line (and the top prize of 150,000) on a season packed with formidable competition. As Emmys conversations erupt into full swing, Drag Race seems poised to continue its winning streak in a slew of reality categories, but Willow Pill may this year earn the show recognition down a new avenue: Her original song from the series finale, “I Hate People,...

“There is nothing else that I work on that allows me to express myself completely in the way that this show does,” says Leland of VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race, which this year wrapped its 14th season. “I still pinch myself and cannot believe that this is my job.”
The mononymous songwriter, Drag Race season 14 finalist Angeria Paris VanMicheals, lead editor Jamie Martin and songwriter Gabe Lopez joined The Hollywood Reporter’s Hilton Dresden for THR Presents, powered by Vision Media, to discuss the latest season of the Emmy-winning reality competition series.

Willow Pill has released the full “Xl Version” remix of her song “I Hate People.” The singer made herstory by becoming the first out transgender winner of the main “Drag Race” franchise, and is doing it again by becoming the first “Drag Race” queen to be submitted for a song Emmy, for the original version of the single, first performed pm the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” finale in April.
Of the track, which was co-written with Brett “Leland” McLaughlin and Gabe Lopez, Willow says, “I wanted the song to strike a chord between fun and dark humor. The past two years have made everyone not so fond of each other, but also come closer together at the same time.”
In an interview with Variety, Willow shared that the song took 10 days to write from “idea to the end product.”

Since the airing of its first season in 2009, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has charted a new course for queer visibility and representation on television, amassing a staggering 19 Emmy wins from 39 total nominations. Now, on the heels of a game-changing 14th season, the hit reality competition program proves through the spirit and mentorship of its host and judges, the artistry and creativity of its crew, and the talents and storytelling of its cast of queens just how deep of an impact the series continues to have on television. Using the show’s iconic “fuzzy pink box” as a stand-in moderator, 11-time Emmy-winning host and producer RuPaul Charles leads a 2022 Emmys FYC panel alongside series judges Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews, including insight from season 14 winner Willow Pill and cast mates Kerri Colby, Bosco and Angeria Paris VanMichaels, as well as members of the crew from a variety of departments. “Normally, on one reality show you look for one or two things. With this we’re looking for like eight,” exclaims “RuPaul’s Drag Race” casting director Ethan Peterson. He and fellow casting director Goloka Bolte have earned two consecutive Emmy Awards for bringing beloved drag queens to the screen. Before a queen can rocket to stardom on the hit reality series, they must first make an impression with these two creatives. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The key to scoring a slot in the “Drag Race” competition is a killer audition tape and this pair of casting directors watches them all. “We’re looking for those authentic voices, queens who really know who they are and bring something fresh and new to the table,” explains Bolte. She admits that in order to get through the inundation of audition reels there are “a lot of late nights in pajamas,” but the hours are worth it.

“It was a huge undertaking, but something I had dreamt about for so long,” confesses Miguel Zarate about becoming the choreographer for Season 14 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” He inherited the title from Jamal Sims, who Zarate describes as a “father figure.” The dance guru put the queens’ moves to the test during an iconic “Rusical,” a 60’s-inspired girls group number, and the epic original songs for the top 5 contestants. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
One of the most acclaimed maxi challenges from Season 14 was the Rusical, “Moulin Ru.” It’s inspired, of course, by the Broadway adaptation of “Moulin Rouge!” but that doesn’t mean Zarate was content to plunder Sonya Tayeh’s Tony-winning dance numbers. “I definitely wasn’t looking at her choreography, nor any form of reference,” confides Zarate. “I just wanted to take the reins and have my own creative freedom with it.” Character work was...

The 14th season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will live in the herstory books as a big step forward for trans representation.
The show began with just two trans queens, Kerri Colby and Kornbread, but as the season progressed, they were joined by three others who spoke their truths, Bosco, Jasmine Kennedie and Willow Pill. It became the most trans-inclusive season to date.
Further cementing the season in herstory, Willow Pill was crowned America’s Drag Race Superstar, and she became the first out transgender winner of the main “Drag Race” franchise.
Speaking with Variety last month at RuPaul’s DragCon, Colby called the season “trans-tastic.” She stressed this wasn’t just a trend for the season, but that it was a place for her to speak her truth. Colby said, “I was very nervous to approach my truth for so long. Part of it was that I never felt like I saw me.

Things just keep getting better for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 14 winner Willow Pill.
Pill is eligible and will be submitted for Emmy consideration for her original song, “I Hate People,” which she performed at the show’s finale on VH1 in April.
Willow co-wrote the anthemic song about not liking anyone with Brett Leland McLaughlin and Gabe Lopez.
“The song ‘I Hate People’ was such a blast to work on because we wanted to go totally left of what the audience would expect,” Pill said of working on the number, in an exclusive statement to TheWrap. “The song is irreverent, catchy and tends to resonate with people after a rough 2 years.”

Every time there’s a new season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race there always seems to be a clump of so-called fans who complain that there are too many seasons being produced in close succession to one another. While I understand the over-saturation and cost associated with all the different streaming sites (although for those struggling with the latter factor I would recommend the Wow Presents Plus app which is just under £5 a month and contains all the possible Drag Race content you could possibly want!)

It feels like forever since Willow Pill snatched the season 14 crown of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (it’s been less than a month), so we’re punching ghosts over the fact that the series first ever all-winners season is set to kick off this Friday, May 20th. Premiering with two episodes on Paramount Plus, “All Stars 7” will feature eight past winners competing again for the chance to be hailed the “Queen of All Queens” by host RuPaul Charles.
Before they walk into the Werk Room again, we’re taking a look back at each of the eight queens and the path they took on their previous seasons to reach their their crowning moment. Yvie Oddly may not have seemed like a contender for the win for most of her season, but over time she showed that applying her oddities to every challenge instead of hiding them was in fact a winning formula.
