Deadline reports that Dave Bautista will star in Afterburn alongside Samuel. L Jackson. The project is a sci-fi action movie based on the graphic novel series of the same name written by Scott Chitwood & Paul Ens and illustrated by Wayne Nichols.
Afterburn takes place in a post-apocalyptic world ten years after a solar flare has wiped out technology across the globe. Dave Bautista will play Jake, an ex-soldier who “works as a treasure hunter recovering valuable objects from the old world for powerful clients. His latest mission is to team up with freedom fighter Drea to recover the Mona Lisa before an unhinged warlord gets there first.” Samuel L. Jackson will play a freedom fighter by the name of Valentine. The film will be directed by J.J. Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), director of the Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton which hits theaters in January, has signed on to rewrite and direct Relativity Media‘s forthcoming adaptation of the Red 5 Comics series, Afterburn.
THR reports that the adaptation of Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens comic, which is set to star Gerard Butler (Of Men and Mavericks, Hunter Killer) is set in a future where solar flares have left half the world a ravaged wasteland filled with mutants and pirates. Buried beneath the ash and rubble are priceless artifacts and some of the world’s most valuable works of art — for which wealthy Americans will pay any price.
The story centers on a treasure hunter who leads his team into the quarantine zone, braving rival bounty hunters, rogue armies, pirate gangs and deadly mutants along the way.
No release date has been announced for Afterburn.

Tommy Wirkola made a name for himself with the zombie Nazi movie Dead Snow, and he went on to direct Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which will hit theaters in January of 2013. But the Norwegian director has just secured another job; he'll be taking on the director's position in a movie called Afterburn that's based on Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens' graphic novel.
The Hollywood Reporter has the news, and here's their description of the plot:

Never heard of “Afterburn”? Apparently it’s a comic book, and some people really sem to love it. I hope these obscure book-loving individuals really enjoyed “Dead Snow”, because director Tommy Wirkola is the latest filmmaker attached to the project. Back in 2010, Antoine Fuqua was ready to tackle the project with Gerard Butler in the lead, but, as you may already have guessed, that project never came to fruition. Honestly, I love Wirkola’s style, and if anyone has the chops to pull off a movie involving mutants, pirates, and post-apocalyptic landscapes, it’s that guy. No offense to Fuqua, of course. Here’s what the whole thing’s supposed to be about: Based on the graphic novel by Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens, Afterburn is set in a future where solar flares have left half the world a ravaged wasteland filled with mutants and pirates. Buried beneath the ash...

After delivering the Nazi zombie horror flick Dead Snow, director Tommy Wirkola moved on to a Hollywood project with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (which won't arrive in theaters until January of 2013). Now the filmmaker is staying in English-language films as Heat Vision has heard Wirkola will be at the helm of an adaptation of Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens' graphic novel Afterburn. We haven't heard about this project since late 2010 when Antoine Fuqua was said to direct with Gerard Butler starring. The actor is still attached, but obviously Fuqua will not be directing. For a little more explanation of the comic book's story, here's the official synopsis from Red 5 Comics: In the near future, a massive solar flare strikes the dayside of the Earth, utterly destroying the Eastern Hemisphere. Europe, Africa, Asia, India and Russia are turned into wastelands. What...

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters won’t be gracing your local theater for another nine months or so, but I’ll take this as a sign Tommy Wirkola did something right over there. According to THR, the Norwegian helmer is closing in on Relativity’s Afterburn, a sci-fi film that’s already set Gerard Butler as its lead, schedule permitting; Neal H. Moritz, Tobey Maguire, Ryan Kavanaugh, and Toby Jaffe will all produce.
Once set for Antoine Fuqua — who will instead direct Butler in Olympus Has Fallen and, possibly, Hunter Killer — Afterburn is based on Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens‘ graphic novel, which takes place on a future, solar flare-ravaged Earth that’s now “filled with mutants and pirates.” In the middle of this wreckage lies some valuable art work, and a treasure hunter (Butler) is sent to recover it — not before facing off against “rival bounty hunters, rogue armies,...

The zom-com genre has been kind to director Tommy Wirkola, since it was his 2008 film “Dead Snow” that first attracted Hollywood's attention, and it's been announced he'll continue his good fortune by heading up a new sci-fi comic adaptation with considerable talent involved.
Fresh off directing the upcoming “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” Wirkola has now been tapped to rewrite and direct “Afterburn,” an adaptation of a sci-fi comic property with Gerard Butler set to star. Based off the graphic novel by Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens, the film concerns a future where solar flares have laid bare most of civilization, leaving in their wake a dangerous population of mutants and pirates. At the center of the story is a treasure hunter, leading his team into the rubble to search for priceless artifacts underneath, braving the hordes of bounty hunters, gangs, and mutants while doing so. After gaining plenty of notice for Nazi zombie horror romp Dead Snow back in 2009, writer-director Tommy Wirkola has already seen the gates of Hollywood swing open to welcome him for oddball fantasy twister Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. With that finished and awaiting release, he’s turning his attention to other jobs, agreeing to re-write and direct graphic novel adaptation Afterburn for Relativity and star Gerard Butler. You may recall that Afterburn has been sitting in the development black hole for a few years now, originally announced back in 2008 when Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood’s comic book series was snapped up for adaptation with Tobey Maguire in the lead.It cooled its heels until late 2010, when Gerard Butler jumped aboard, ready to play the leader of a group of mercenaries who make a living scouring a solar flare-ravaged Earth for valuables. Gerard Butler is in talks with Relativity Media to star in a film version of Red 5's comic book Afterburn.
According to Deadline, director Antoine Fuqua is also in talks to join the project.
The sci-fi comic by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood takes place a year after a massive solar flare scorches half of the Earth.
Treasure seekers return to the planet to retrieve anything of value, amid competition from rival looters, mutants and pirates.
Chitwood told Superhero Hype: "We're excited...but as the reports stated, they're still 'in talks' so it's a tad premature.
"But I think Gerard Butler would make a great lead in Afterburn. We wrote the character as a modern cross between Indiana Jones and Mad Max, and I think Butler has shown in the past he's capable of portraying both of their qualities."
The script, originally by Into the Blue scribe Matt Johnson, will be reworked by Christian Gudegast.

Gerard Butler isn't likely to reprise his role as King Leonidas for "Xerxes," director Zack Snyder's planned sequel to "300" — not unless he's appearing in a flashback, or as a zombie Spartan for that matter — but that doesn't mean that the Scottish actor is done swimming in the comic book pool.

I’m sharing this, but not putting it into our podcast feed, as I’d imagine this will only interest a small group of listeners to our podcast. There isn’t anything Criterion related in this talk, but it certainly digs into a lot of the issues that we deal with internally, from how we decide on what to post, and how to link to sources, to how does one make any kind of living, writing online. They also touch on larger topics, like the usage of social media in modern film culture, as well as ethical questions like: what do you do if you’re both a reviewer and a news writer.

Earlier this year Red 5 Comics had their property "Afterburn" picked up for a big-screen adaptation, interestingly, with Tobey Maguire set to produce. Today, Hollywood Reporter tells us that the burgeoning comic producer got its "Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction" comic picked up by production company Benderspink (The Ruins, The Ring films). Not bad for a company that appears to presently have roughly six comic book properties under its name. Red 5 Comics was actually founded by a contributor to fellow movie site ComingSoon.net, Scott Chitwood, along with Paul Ens, former director LucasFilm's StarWars.com. Excited for another new fresh take on zombies? "Zmd" was just released last month and is authored by Underworld supporting actor and series creator, Kevin Grevioux. Who knew the Lycan could write? Grevioux is set to reprise his role in the forthcoming Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. As for what he has hatched in this comic...

Benderspink has picked up the film rights to Red 5 Comics' recently released horror/action comic "ZMDs: Zombies of Mass Destruction" by "Underworld" writer-producer Kevin Grevioux.
"Zmd" is the story of a new government weapons program that drops zombies, designed to be photosensitive and dissolve by a set time, into war zones at night to destroy the enemy population. But after one fails to self-destruct in the Middle East, a team of elite soldiers must enter hostile territory to stop a growing zombie army.
The project was brought to the company by production coordinator Josh Feldman and will be produced by Benderspink.
Red 5 Comics was created by Paul Ens, former director of Lucasfilm's StarWars.com and Lucas Online, and Scott Chitwood, co-founder of TheForce.net and contributor to ComingSoon.net and SuperHeroHype.com. The company, based in Calgary, Alberta, began publishing its first books in the fall. Its "Afterburn" recently was set up at Relativity with Tobey Maguire and Neal Moritz producing.
Benderspink has carved a niche in comic book adaptations, setting up such projects as "Y: The Last Man" and "Drafted" at New Line, "Pencilneck" at Lionsgate and "Pet Robots" at Disney.
Grevioux, repped by Wma, is a stuntman and actor-turned-film and comic writer. He launched two comic book imprints and has been tapped to write "New Warriors" for Marvel Comics.

The book, whose first issue hit stands in January, is a sci-fi adventure set against the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Earth, whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated from radiation and fallout. The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who for the right price extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels while facing rival hunters, mutants and pirates along the way.
