New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is facing a rapidly growing number of calls from his Democratic colleagues to resign from office following a damning indictment on charges of corruption and bribery.
On Wednesday, Menendez pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment in Manhattan court.
The indictment, which was made public on Friday, was initially met with widespread silence from Senate Democrats, save for Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman, who on Saturday called for Menendez’s resignation. “Senator Menendez should resign,” he wrote. “He’s entitled to the presumption of innocence,...

For the second time in less than two months, YouTube is responding to a critical inquiry into its advertising practices. Senators Ed Markey (D-ma) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tn) have written a letter to the FTC asking for an investigation into YouTube’s ad placements on videos intended for children.
The latest to-do over children’s online safety started with a report from Adalytics. The ad data platform — which previously argued that the Google Video Partners program “misled” buyers — raised questions about the data collection that could be happening on kid-friendly content.
According to an Adalytics report, spots from major “adult” brands have run as pre-roll ads next to videos from CoComelon, Kids Diana Show, and other major family channels. When viewers clicked on those ads, cookies were added to their devices “for the purposes of ad targeting and tracking on the browsers of consumers watching YouTube videos that are clearly labeled as ‘for kids.

Cryptocurrency mining is wreaking havoc on America’s efforts to take on the climate crisis. President Biden wants to crack down.
The White House announced on Tuesday that the president’s proposed 2024 budget includes the Digital Asset Mining Energy (Dame) tax, which would tax crypto firms at 30 percent of the cost of the electricity they use to mine digital currency in the United States.
“Cryptominers’ high energy consumption has negative spillovers on the environment, quality of life, and electricity grids where these firms locate across the country,” the statement read.

San Francisco, April 29 (Ians) A group of US lawmakers have proposed a bill to stop artificial intelligence (AI)-driven autonomous systems from single-handedly launching nuclear weapons, as fears arise on the potential threat of AI taking a decision on its own.
Senator Edward Markey (D-ma) and Representatives Ted Lieu (D-ca), Don Beyer (D-va), and Ken Buck (R-Co) have introduced the ‘Block Nuclear Launch by Autonomous AI Act’ in the US, reports The Verge.
The bill would “prohibit the use of Federal funds to launch a nuclear weapon using an autonomous weapons system that is not subject to meaningful human control”.
“In all cases, the US will maintain a human ain the loop’ for all actions critical to informing and executing decisions by the President to initiate and terminate nuclear weapon employment,” read the bill.

Washington, April 16 (Ians) Two US Senators have slammed Elon Musk-run Tesla for user privacy violation after reports surfaced that its employees shared video footage captured by its customers’ vehicles of car crashes, road rage incidents and other potentially embarrassing clips.
Democrats Ed Markey (D-ma) and Richard Blumenthal (D-ct) accused the electric car-maker of showing “willful disregard” for its customers’ privacy, after a Reuters report raised “serious questions about Tesla’s management practices.”
“According to an alarming new press report, Tesla employees have shared private photos and videos captured by cameras in Tesla customers’ vehicles. Although vehicle cameras have the potential to improve safety, these features do not need to come at the expense of consumer privacy,” they wrote to Tesla.

President Joe Biden joined guest host Kal Penn on The Daily Show Monday for an interview covering student loan forgiveness, LGBTQ rights, and climate change. It was the latter that found the president in a contradiction, who called upon the country to take action against climate change despite his administration’s approval of ConocoPhillips’ massive Willow oil drilling project in Alaska.
During Biden’s first visit to the show since taking office, he credited the passing of Inflation Reduction Act to “young people” and the “generation between 18 and 35.”

San Francisco, March 3 (Ians) US Senators have urged Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to stop plans to open its metaverse platforms to teenagers.

According to TechCrunch, Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-ct) and Ed Markey (D-ma) wrote a letter to Zuckerberg urging him to halt Meta’s plans to open Horizon Worlds to teens.
“Any strategy to invite young users into a digital space rife with potential harms should not be driven by a goal to maximise profit,” the senators wrote.
“We call on you to immediately halt Meta’s plan to bring teen users onto Horizon Worlds,” they added.

San Francisco, Feb 28 (Ians) Twitter is down to less than 2,000 employees from 7,500 a few months ago and now US Senator Ed Markey has called on Twitter CEO Elon Musk to bring the accessibility team back as differently-abled people have reported increased difficulty and frustration using the platform.
In an open letter addressed to Musk, Markey wrote that Twitter has a responsibility to ensure that its platform is open and accessible to disabled users.
“Yet, you recently eliminated Twitter’s Accessibility Team, which played a crucial role in developing and implementing essential features for Twitter users with disabilities,” he told Musk.
Not surprisingly, “since you shut down Twitter’s Accessibility Team”, disabled users have reported increased difficulty and frustration using Twitter.
“I urge you to immediately reinstate Twitter’s Accessibility Team and take all necessary steps to promote accessibility for disabled Twitter users,” the Senator added.

For decades, a major restaurant lobby has devoted millions of dollars to stomping out bills that would improve the lives of the industry’s workers — including attempts to raise state and federal minimum wages to 15 per hour. As it turns out, the workers who stood to gain from those legislative efforts had unwittingly funded the restaurant lobby’s war on them. Now, a group of Democratic senators are demanding answers to find out how workers came to fund a fight against their own interests.

San Francisco, Nov 28 (Ians) US Senator Ed Markey, who warned Elon Musk for mocking him on Twitter, has again slammed the new Twitter owner, saying he could respond to my tweets but failed to respond to his letter as deadline passed.
In the letter to Musk, Markey (Democrat from Massachusetts) had warned Musk to “fix your companies, or Congress will”.
“@elonmusk could respond to my tweets but failed to respond to my letter by yesterday’s deadline and answer basic questions about Twitter verification,” posted in a fresh tweet .
“Congress must end the era of failed Big Tech self-regulation and pass laws that put user safety over the whims of billionaires,” he added.
Earlier this month, Musk had mocked Markey after the latter wrote a letter to the new Twitter CEO, slamming him for launching the 8 Blue service with verification.

Elon Musk announced plans to “tentatively” launch a new Twitter verification program on Friday next week. All verified accounts would be “manually authenticated” before the coveted check “activates.” The company CEO called the new process “Painful, but necessary.”
The verification update will also differentiate verified individuals with additional colors: gold checks for companies, grey checks for the government, and blue checks for individual accounts, which Musk pointed out applies to “celebrity or not.”
The announcement follows the failed 8 verified checkmarks Musk installed shortly after taking the reins of the social media platform in October.

San Francisco, Nov 13 (Ians) Elon Musk on Sunday mocked US Senator Ed Markey after he shot a letter to the new Twitter CEO, slamming him for launching 8 Blue service with verification.

Senator Ed Markey has a few questions for Elon Musk. Earlier today, Geoffrey A. Fowler of the Washington Post was able to successfully impersonate the senator and clinch a blue checkmark, putting into question (yet again) the effectiveness of Musk’s latest Twitter verification process.
After “a spare iPhone, a credit card and a little creativity,” Fowler was able to place the blue checkmark next to the fake verified account posted under the username @realedmarkey. The test was done with the permission of Markey, who has criticized big tech for years.

Democrats revived efforts to reinstate robust net neutrality rules, with new legislation that would affirm the FCC’s authority to require that companies like Verizon, AT&T and Comcast treat all internet traffic equally.
The legislation would classify internet service as an essential service, giving the FCC a statutory legal footing to prohibit internet service providers from blocking or throttling traffic, as well as other measures.
Net neutrality has a long and winding history, with efforts to establish rules of the road for internet traffic stretching back almost 20 years. As legislative efforts have failed, the FCC has three times tried to regulate how ISPs handle internet traffic. The most recent was in 2015, when the Obama-era FCC reclassified internet service like a common carrier, but the Trump-era FCC largely reversed those rules in 2017. In both years, public interest in the FCC’s actions were fueled by commentary from John Oliver on his HBO series Last Week Tonight.

Unstoppable force meets immovable object in “To the End.” Rachel Lears’ documentary inspires in its portrait of youthful activists organizing to push impactful climate-change policies into American political reality — and exasperates in the resistance with which that urgent quest is greeted on both sides of the entrenched-power aisle. Covering several years of fast-moving events, this Sundance premiere is too exclusively U.S.-focused to be particularly viable for offshore programmers, but its topicality should stir sales interest on home turf.

More than 100 Democrats in the House and Senate and independent Bernie Sanders have signed a letter urging the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to negotiate a fair contract with IATSE, saying, “We are united in our belief in the importance of livable wages, sustainable benefits, and reasonable rest periods between shifts and during the workday” – three of the union’s core demands.
The letter was signed by 31 senators and 87 representatives and sent to AMPTP president Carol Lombardini.

The world is on a dire climate path, and the commitments of global governments to curb greenhouse-gas emissions are still woefully insufficient to blunt dangerous warming. That’s the takeaway from the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nation’s climate agency, released Monday morning. The U.N. secretary general, António Guterres, called the report “a code red for humanity.”
The Ipcc report — the sixth major assessment since the panel began its work in 1988 — does not include much new science but is notable for its clarity and bluntness.

Internet companies are facing another congressional regulatory push, as two senators have introduced legislation to update online privacy rules to protect children and teens.
Sen. Ed Markey (D-ma) and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-la) introduced the legislation, which would prohibit internet companies from collecting personal information from anyone 13 to 15 years old without their consent. It also would restrict targeted advertising directed at children, and require that companies give users ways to eliminate personal information from a child or teen. The legislation also creates a Youth Privacy and Marketing Division at the Federal Trade Commission, and even establish a “Bill of Rights” for teens.
“Big Tech has a voracious appetite for kids’ attention and data, and these companies have no problem prioritizing their own profits over children and teens’ right to privacy,” Markey said in a statement. “It’s time for Congress to swiftly put in place strict safeguards that stop these...

Progressive Democrats in Congress will on Thursday introduce the Transform, Heal and Renew by Investing in a Vibrant Economy (Thrive) Act. The bill, which has been promoted for months, outlines a “bold and holistic” plan to address racial injustice, the climate crisis, and the economic anxiety and mass unemployment exacerbated by the pandemic. “I think that for us the pandemic has sadly just showcased our belief that we need to figure out how to help people thrive and not just survive,” says Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), one of the bill’s sponsors.

Barbara Boxer was in Greenland in July 2007, watching chunks of ice slide off glaciers into the rising ocean. She had brought Republican senators there with her, hoping a first-person confrontation with climate change would persuade them to take action. And as the newly calved icebergs flowed past, the then-senator thought her colleagues might be persuaded to vote yes on legislation to transform the U.S. from one of the world’s biggest greenhouse-gas polluters into a leader in addressing the crisis. “This was a moment in time,” Boxer tells Rolling Stone,...

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-mn) has formally introduced legislation to strengthen antitrust laws and restore competition to American markets. The Competition and Antitrust Law Enforcement Reform Act “will give federal enforcers the resources they need to do their jobs, strengthen prohibitions on anticompetitive conduct and mergers, and make additional reforms to improve enforcement,” her office said Thursday.
Former Democratic presidential contender Klobuchar is the lead Dem on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights. The move, which had been anticipated, turns up the heat on big social media and tech companies like Facebook and Google. Late last year, the FTC and 48 attorneys general filed antitrust suits against Facebook, alleging the company quashes competition, including by buying up smaller rivals like Instagram and WhatsApp. Google is the target of three suits by a combination of state attorneys general and the DOJ for its dominance in search.

Following the unprecedented rioting by supporters of Donald Trump in the U.S. Capitol, a growing number of people, both Democrats and Republicans, are calling for the president to be removed from office.
According to White House correspondent April D. Ryan, the push is happening even at the leadership level, as she reported that “Congressional leaders are in the undisclosed location and focusing on the 25th Amendment to get @realDonaldTrump out of office!”
And Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel reported that Massachusetts Democrat Katherine Clark, assistant Speaker of the House and the fourth-ranking congressional Democrat, called Trump “a traitor to our country and our Constitution” who “must be removed from office and prevented from further endangering our country and our people.”
But they’re far from alone. Among notable examples from the Democratic side of the spectrum, Rep. Ilhan Omar says she is drafting new articles of impeachment. Her colleague in “the Squad,...

With declines in advertising revenue devastating news organizations across the country because of the coronavirus pandemic, 14 U.S. Senators have signed a letter urging Senate leaders to specifically “include payroll support for digital-native news professionals in the next Covid-19-related legislation.”
The letter is endorsed by the Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO, and the WGA East, which represents staffers at online news outlets such as HuffPost, Salon, Slate, Vox Media and Vice Media.
“The Covid-19 pandemic’s economic devastation has rippled out to the news industry,” the senators wrote today in a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Charles Schumer. “Initial reporting estimated a 51% decline in spending on advertisements over March and April. When Americans stopped shopping, retailers stopped advertising. When Americans quit traveling, airlines and hotels quit advertising.
“This pause in advertising has hurt digital-native news outlets in particular. These organizations rely primarily on advertising revenue to pay the bills.

Jane Fonda said in an interview with TheWrap that if President Trump continues to use the coronavirus as an excuse to roll back Obama-era environmental regulations, the results will be “catastrophic.”
It’s one of the reasons Fonda is not stopping her climate change-focused Fire Drill Fridays rallies, which are going virtual starting this April 3, despite her being stuck at home during the pandemic.
Last week the Epa and the Transportation Department rolled back key Obama-era gas mileage and emissions standards, something Fonda says is highly irresponsible during a public health crisis.
“It’s catastrophic! They should be put in jail for what they’re doing,” Fonda told TheWrap while isolated in her home. “It’s not unrelated. When there’s bad air, air pollution makes you so much more vulnerable to something like Covid-19. Living in a polluted area caused by fossil fuel emissions is a pre-condition. That’s for sure.

The Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court battle has turned into one of the most contentious nominations in our nation’s history. President Trump’s nominee has been accused of past sexual assaults and of being dishonest before the Senate.

The $85 billion merger of At& and Time Warner was cleared by a federal judge in Washington, D.C., today in a landmark antitrust ruling. U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon accepted the survival-of-the-fittest argument At&T and Time Warner executives made in court, paving the way for the tie-up of the the nation’s second-largest telecommunications company and the biggest pay TV provider with one of the country’s leading film and television studios. The companies had argued that the move is essential to compete in the current media landscape.
The Department of Justice had sued to stop the merger, contending that such a merger would place much power in the hands of one corporation. Doj lawyers today already were hinting that an appeal could be in the works.

The FCC just voted 3-2 along party lines to dismantle the set of protections that go by the shorthand “net neutrality,” and it’s bad news for consumers, media-lovers, and small internet businesses alike.
Completely reversing all of net neutrality is a huge departure from what consumers are used to, and in the long run the consequences could be absolutely disastrous. But there’s a lot of confusion and a lack of clarity about how the demise of net neutrality will happen and hurt individuals.
Although the Commission just voted to kill the rules, the internet won’t immediately be split into tiered bundles today or even this year. If it net neutrality does end up doomed, the reality of “how” is slower, more complicated, and more insidious than that. But the good news is, it still may not be doomed at all.
