"Based on a true story." No five words in cinema have been abused more than those that have opened so many movies. "The Good Nurse" is one of them. Netflix's latest true crime drama is based on the 2013 book by Charles Graeber and documents Charles Cullen, a nurse who murdered patients from 1988 to 2003 by injecting insulin and/or digoxin into IV bags.
Eddie Redmayne plays Cullen in the film, but he's not the lead. That would be his friend and co-worker, Amy Louhgren (Jessica Chastain). She has a good heart, albeit one afflicted with cardiomyopathy, and so comes to rely on "Charlie" during their shared night shifts. After one of their patients dies, though, she slowly discovers his crimes.
So, how true of a story is "The Good Nurse"? While "true story" movies often employ composite characters, Amy Louhgren was the real nurse who helped catch Cullen. The film's personal details of Amy,...

Photo: ‘The Good Nurse’ Working long nights in the ICU, battling a severe heart condition, and parenting two children as a single mother, Amy Loughren was happy to meet a new coworker and colleague that exerted energy that lifted weights off her shoulders. With their newfound friendship, Amy Loughren did not expect that she would fall into an objective to save the lives of any patients in the path of Charles Cullen, a nurse suspected to be responsible for the undetected murders of many patients. Hesitant, as she believed this was out of character for the charismatic and relatable Charles, the rise of deaths in the hospital following the employment of Cullen raised her suspicions. Teaming up with detectives Tim Braun and Danny Baldwin, Amy worked discreetly with the duo to get proof of the homicides and a confession from Charles. Dramatized from the real events in 2003 and the novel by Charles Graeber,...

“Capturing the Killer Nurse” is a documentary about Charles Cullen, the serial killer whose chilling story is the basis of the Eddie Redmayne/Jessica Chastain movie “The Good Nurse.” Both films are being released by Netflix, in what has become a synergistic system of true-crime-as-cross-promotion. What both versions show you is that the Cullen saga may be the first case of a serial killer who was enabled by corporate malfeasance.
Cullen, a geek with a porn-star mustache and a smirky grimace who spent 16 years as a highly regarded nurse in the Northeast (mostly New Jersey), injected hospital drugs — principally the heart-failure medication Digoxin — into a number of patients, killing them “invisibly.” He was arrested in December 2003 and confessed to the murders of 29 people; many think that he killed closer to 400. Given that his track record of foul play is traceable to the early ’90s, and that he worked in nine different hospitals,...

Warning: The following article contains major spoilers for the Netflix film "The Good Nurse."
Any show or film "based on a true story" is guaranteed to have a built-in creep factor. In the case of "The Good Nurse," the story rips pages from Charles Graeber's 2013 book " The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder," which details how real-life serial killer Charles "Charlie" Cullen murdered dozens (possibly hundreds) of people. The film, co-starring Eddie Redmayne as Cullen and Jessica Chastain as the eponymous good nurse Amy Loughren, is the latest in a long string of serial killer adaptations to hit Netflix, for better or worse.
While the film itself falls a little flat, there is plenty to admire about both Chastain's and Redmayne's performances. Redmayne, in particular, makes a disturbing turn as the deadly nurse, who insidiously wields his power to kill people under the guise of simply doing his job.

These days, Netflix is all in on the serial killer beat, thanks to myriad offerings on the twisted subject, from Ryan Murphy’s massively successful Jeffrey Dahmer miniseries to Tobias Lindholm’s recent chilly drama “The Good Nurse.” Never one to waste an opportunity to keep its audience’s rapt attention, Murphy’s initial one-off is now set for the anthology treatment (which will explore various titular “monsters” through history), while Lindholm’s fact-based feature is followed by a flimsy documentary about murderous nurse Charles Cullen.
— particularly when interested parties can watch Lindholm’s far superior dramatization of the same material. The Cullen case is ripe for exploration, though, what with the convicted murderer believed to potentially be America’s most prolific serial killer. He’s currently incarcerated for 11 back-to-back lifetime sentences with 29 confirmed victims and possibly 400 overall. That Cullen never fully atoned or explained his crimes — committed while working...

How do you capture the most prolific serial killer in American history? It just takes one whistleblower to call out her colleague.
Jessica Chastain portrays nurse Amy Loughren, who helped take down killer Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne) in the Netflix drama “The Good Nurse.” Cullen is believed to have murdered as many as 400 patients over the course of his 16-year career in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Now, the real Loughren is sharing her side of the story in the documentary “Capturing the Killer Nurse.”
“The idea that a nurse might be killing patients was very disturbing,” Loughren says in the trailer. “There’s no eyewitnesses. There’s no cameras.”
Cullen was an experienced registered nurse at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey. “Capturing the Killer Nurse” uses audio from Cullen himself and emotional sit-downs with those closest to the events — including Loughren, the detectives who cracked the case, author Graeber,...

Eddie Redmayne has admitted he relished the opportunity to play a murderer in The Good Nurse after starring in Fantastic Beasts.
The British actor and Jessica Chastain are receiving rave reviews for their roles in the new Netflix serial killer drama.
Based on a true story, The Good Nurse follows Charles Cullen (Redmayne), a nurse who murders dozens – perhaps even hundreds – of patients over the course of a 16-year period. Chastain plays Cullen’s colleague who helped get him arrested, Amy Loughren.
It’s quite a turn for Redmayne who has long played the affable, harebrained wizard Newt Scamander in Jk Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts saga, which culminated in The Secrets of Dumbledore this year.
In a new interview with The Los Angeles Times, Redmayne said he relished the opportunity to portray a darker character off the back of the family film series.

Nurse Amy Loughren is shocked when Charlie Cullen, one of her colleagues, is found responsible for the murder of dozens of patients over a period of sixteen years, across two states and nine hospitals, without being charged.
There’s a certain atmosphere present in Tobias Lindholm‘s The Good Nurse that will leave you feeling deeply disturbed and uncomfortable throughout every single minute of its over two-hour running time. Lindholm and screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns have crafted a film that feels so sickening to the point where you can barely stomach it. It’s made even more freaky when you consider the fact that it’s all based on a true story.
The Good Nurse is the definition of a slow-burning crime drama that will leave you guessing at nearly every turn.

It feels inappropriate to call the true crime genre "entertainment," but it's never been more evident that audiences can't get enough of dark stories based on real-life events. The true crime bubble keeps getting bigger, and Netflix is cashing in on these stories in a very big way. Despite the protests from the living family members of the victims of Jeffrey Dahmer, Netflix forged through with Ryan Murphy's "Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," and the show was a massive success. Murphy's follow-up project, "The Watcher," was so popular it impacted the sales of home security cameras, and the recent release of "The Good Nurse" is proof the streamer doesn't have any intention of changing pace anytime soon.

The real nurse who helped capture a colleague, estimated to be America’s most prolific killer, talks about the facts behind the Netflix thriller
It was his shyness that struck her first. “He was so soft-spoken that immediately I felt like I needed to protect him and my protective nature kicked in right away,” Amy Loughren recalls of Charles Cullen. “I knew that he was brilliant. His knowledge of medications, his knowledge of critical care was outstanding, and I’m drawn to people that are smarter than me. And he laughed at all my jokes. So we were fast friends.”
What Loughren did not know was that Cullen, a fellow night nurse, was murdering patients by secretly administering drug overdoses. But she would eventually help detectives catch her colleague and friend and put him behind bars. Today he remains, by some estimates, the most prolific serial killer in American history.

When it comes to awards, it often helps if voters want to give you a big hug; consider all the heroic, Oscar-winning roles ranging from Gregory Peck‘s Atticus Finch to Sean Penn‘s Harvey Milk. But sometimes you can win for breaking bad, especially if you’re a well-liked performer showing off your acting mettle by playing against type. No one will turn up their nose if a thespian plays Macbeth, after all. Eddie Redmayne makes that kind of transformation in “The Good Nurse.”
Redmayne won Best Actor at the Oscars for playing a sympathetic role, renowned scientist Stephen Hawking, in “The Theory of Everything.” He was also sympathetic in his next Oscar-nominated performance, as a pioneering transgender woman in “The Danish Girl.” Those are a far cry from his role in “The Good Nurse” as Charles Cullen, a nurse responsible for at least dozens of murders – possibly hundreds...

For The Good Nurse brain trust of director Tobias Lindholm and writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the question is how, not why.
In the Netflix thriller-drama, Lindholm and Wilson-Cairns tell the true story of how a compassionate ICU nurse named Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain) managed to take down fellow nurse Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), arguably the deadliest serial killer in American history. Loughren showed tremendous bravery at a time when she was not only raising two daughters by herself, but also dealing with a life-threatening heart condition without health insurance.
The film also puts a spotlight on the many hospitals that turned a blind eye to Cullen’s behavior, exposing even more flaws in the U.S. healthcare system. Cullen ultimately pled guilty to the murders of 29 patients, but the actual number over the course of his 16-year nursing career is in the ballpark of 400.

Eddie Redmayne’s children aren’t that impressed by his acting career. So he was caught off guard when his six-year-old daughter asked him if he was a wizard. Though she has never seen any of the “Fantastic Beasts” movies, in which Redmayne stars as Ministry of Magic employee Newt Scamander, she had just caught a bit of a trailer.
Redmayne tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that he wasn’t sure how to respond. “That’s one of those moments in life where, partly you want to be the cool dad and go, ‘Yeah, I’m a wizard!’ and the other part of you doesn’t want to lie to your children and set them off in the wrong direction,” Redmayne recalls.

Even “The Good Nurse” screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns felt a little tapped out on true-crime stories when she was first approached about adapting Charles Graeber’s book “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder” into a big screen version.
Almost 10 years ago, the future “1917” and “Last Night in Soho” screenwriter was fresh off earning her Ma from the National Film and Television School and snagging a spot on the 2014 Black List with her sci-fi script “Aether,” which tracked a serial killer in the near future. Jessica Chastain plays the titular character in "The Good Nurse," which is not an ironic title for the true crime story. Based on Charles Graeber's book, nurse Amy Loughren (Chastain) discovers her friend, Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), is murdering patients. It's a horrifying story that screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns initially wasn't interesting in telling. Once she read Charles Graeber's book about the case, though, she had to write the screenplay, which was eventually directed by filmmaker Tobias Lindholm.
Krysty Wilson-Cairns is the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter behind "1917." Over the last few years, she co-wrote "Last Night in Soho" and also worked on "Penny Dreadful." She's a standout writer for a variety of reasons, including the fact she's often on set collaborating with the directors. It's a rare experience she recently told us about in an interview about "The Good Nurse," her past work, and letting actors act.

Chastain plays heroic nurse Amy Loughren who befriended Charlie before realizing he was killing patients. Jessica Chastain recently won an Oscar for portraying real-life hero Tammy Faye, but taking on a true “angel” caught up in a serial killer drama was a whole other story.
Chastain plays nurse Amy Loughren, who helped take down killer colleague Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), who is believed to have murdered as many as 400 patients over the course of his 16-year career in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Netflix film “The Good Nurse” is helmed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Tobias Lindholm (“The Investigation”) and premieres in theaters October 19 and on Netflix October 26.
“It was different than anything else that I have ever done because I have never filmed a scene from someone’s life as they observed me acting it,” Chastain told IndieWire at the film’s premiere. “She was at the monitor. That was a very nerve-inducing, never-wracking, thing to do. It’s a great responsibility anytime you play someone’s story,...

Plot: Amy (Jessica Chastain), a compassionate nurse, discovers that her co-worker and friend, Charlie (Eddie Redmayne), may be responsible for the death of a patient. Little does she know; the truth runs deeper.
Review: The Good Nurse is one of Netflix’s big October releases, and it’s fitting that the streamer would release this in time for Halloween as, despite not being a horror movie in the traditional sense, it’s pretty damn terrifying. For those not in the know, the film is based on the exploits of Charlie Cullen, a notorious serial killer responsible for the deaths of at least forty people, but, ultimately, the number might be closer to 400. If this number is anywhere near accurate, he may be the most prolific serial killer in history.
What makes The Good Nurse especially terrifying is that the fact-based drama makes it clear that the medical establishment could have...

Attending the Zurich Film Festival for the screening of his latest film, “The Good Nurse,” Eddie Redmayne spoke about his desire to work with director Tobias Lindholm, the joy of watching Jessie Buckley’s performance in “Cabaret” and the disappointment of missing out on “Games of Thrones.”
“The Good Nurse,” which Variety’s Tomris Laffly describes as “soulful” and “devastating,” tells the true story of nurse Charles Cullen, who confessed to murdering at least 29 patients but who may have in fact murdered as many as 400 people, and fellow nurse Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain), who helped solve the case. It’s based on the book “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and Murder,” by Charles Graeber.
“I was sent the script and I knew nothing about the film,” Redmayne said, taking part in a Zurich Film Festival master class. “The story unraveled in front of my eyes and...

The Best Supporting Actor Oscar contender is stripping his good boy image as he scrubs into his villainous side in the new Netflix thriller “The Good Nurse.” He teams up with Jessica Chastain in the Tobias Lindholm-directed, Krysty Wilson-Cairns-penned film about a real-life serial killer, based on the 2013 book of the same name by Charles Graeber. Amy Loughren is a good nurse — she must be, since that's the title of "The Good Nurse," Tobias Lindholm's disappointingly flat serial killer drama. Based on a true story and featuring a script by "1917" scribe Krysty Wilson-Cairns, "The Good Nurse" follows Amy (Jessica Chastain) as she comes to the horrific realization that one of her co-workers and friends is murdering patients.
When we first meet Amy, Lindholm and Wilson-Cairns make it clear that she goes above and beyond for her patients. This isn't just some job for her — she really cares, and wants to do everything she can to make the sick people at her hospital feel better. But Amy has medical problems of her own — she's diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, and advised to go on sick leave, because if she exerts herself too much she could die. But it's not that simple — Amy hasn't been at her current hospital...

Jessica Chastain isn’t a big fan of true crime dramas, especially those about serial killers.
“I’ve always felt a little dirty watching that stuff,” Chastain, who plays a hospital nurse who suspects her friend and colleague is intentionally killing patients in Tobias Lindholm’s The Good Nurse, told a press conference at the Toronto Film Festival on Monday.
The Oscar-winning actress said true crime dramas often sensationalize serial killers and how they commit their murders, including in hospital settings. “We see often times a serial killer or a story that’s fetishized. You see him injecting the bags,” Chastain insisted.
“I don’t want the media to glorify what happened to another human being and I want to celebrate the humanity,” she added as Chastain and her fellow cast, including Eddie Redmayne in the role of the true-life serial killer Charles Cullen,...

In the fall of 2003, a new nurse arrived at a quiet hospital in the middle of New Jersey. He was mild-mannered and affable, with an impressive resume of former gigs. His name was Charles Cullen. Call him Charlie. He quickly became friends with fellow nurse Amy Loughren, who was also good at her job and kind to those who came into her orbit. Both were hiding secrets: Amy had recently learned she had a disease that required a heart transplant, one she could not afford until she had finished up six months at her new-ish gig at the hospital; Charlie was a serial killer.
What happened when Amy met Charlie, and then discovered his horrifying secret and helped bring him to justice, is well-dramatized in Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse.” Based on Charles Graeber’s book “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder” and exactingly adapted by “1917” screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns,...

The true story of a nurse who became a prolific serial killer is brought to Netflix in a solid crime drama that loses steam by the end
Given our collective, at times morally dubious, bloodlust for all things true crime, one would safely assume that the story of the man considered to be the most prolific serial killer in recorded history would have already been given the podcast, documentary and miniseries treatment. But the name Charles Cullen has mostly been absent from the genre, the hows and whys of which might be somewhat explained by the intermittently effective Netflix drama The Good Nurse, a mixed bag of shock, horror and frustration.
Because telling the story of Cullen is far from easy: his crimes are scattered, his victim count unknown and his motives mysterious. The beats of his story don’t fit into the slick structure we know too well, and...

During a career of 16 years that spanned numerous East Coast hospitals since the late ‘80s, real-life nurse Charles Cullen confessed to murdering at least 29 patients with a fatal cocktail of drugs he dripped into his victims’ bloodstream. That figure was only his confirmed body count, however. As a title card suggests at the end of Tobias Lindholm’s shrewd and absorbing drama “The Good Nurse” — a Netflix original that just premiered at Toronto — the real number of his victims was predicted to be as high as a blood-curdling 400.
Hopping from one job to the next, the serial killer went undetected by the authorities, with his connection to the unusual deaths remaining as an open-secret suspicion at every facility he worked at. In order to avoid legal ramifications, none of the hospitals reported him — they just made him someone else’s problem, as the story of any corrupt institution goes.

“The Good Nurse” director Tobias Lindholm wasn’t interested in making a why-dunnit.
The Netflix drama, which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival, tells the horrifying true story of Charles Cullen, the serial killer who used his position as a nurse to murder up to 40 patients. But the film isn’t a psychological study.
“I’m not that fascinated with the reasons that Charlie did this,” says Lindholm. “I was more interested in why we didn’t stop him sooner, because we could have.”
Indeed, “The Good Nurse” is as much an indictment of the way that Cullen was able to maneuver through labyrinthine hospital systems, with executives and administrators covering his tracks as a way of skirting liability. That failure to fully acknowledge Cullen’s culpability in mysterious patient deaths, enabled him to go from one job to another, sowing destruction in his wake. Lindholm, who is Danish,...

"He's been killing people - without even touching them." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a mystery thriller titled The Good Nurse, from Danish filmmaker Tobias Lindholm. It's premiering at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival first this month, then will be streaming in October on Netflix. A gripping thriller based on true events (which is especially scary), The Good Nurse is directed by Academy Award nominee Tobias Lindholm (for Another Round), written by Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and stars Academy Award winners Jessica Chastain as Amy Loughren and Eddie Redmayne as Charles Cullen, as well as Nnamdi Asomugha, Noah Emmerich, Malik Yoba, Alix West Lefler, and Kim Dickens. What's going on? An infamous caregiver is implicated in the deaths of hundreds of hospital patients. What is the truth? What's really going on, why is he doing this? This looks especially eerie and unsettling, with such a dark performance by Redmayne.

Academy Award winners Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain bring a harrowing hospital true crime saga to life with “The Good Nurse.”
The Netflix film, helmed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Tobias Lindholm (“The Investigation”), tells the disturbingly true tale of serial killer nurse Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), who is believed to have murdered as many as 400 patients over the course of his 16-year career in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Cullen killed patients by administering lethal doses of insulin and other potentially fatal drugs; he confessed to killing up to 40 people and is currently serving 17 consecutive life sentences in prison.
Cullen’s coworker and fellow nurse Amy Loughren (Chastain) ultimately led to Cullen’s capture. Loughren grew suspicious of Cullen after detectives investigated an unusual death at the hospital where they worked.

Charles Cullen murdered at least 40 patients in the many medical facilities where he worked as a nurse, The Killing Oath examines how his co-worker Amy Loughren helped bring him to justice. Charles Cullen was a nurse working in New Jersey when he embarked on a murderous killing spree, targeting the very vulnerable patients he was supposed to be caring for. Cullen’s mental health issues started very young and he made several attempts to kill himself aged just nine-year-old. Eventually he seems to have changed the focus of that self-hatred to that of his patients. Over a period of 16 years […]

"The Following" Season 1 finale airs tonight on Fox, and we recently chatted with Executive Producer Marcos Siega about the finer details of the show, how it evolved to this point, and what will happen next as Joe’s vulnerabilities start to bleed to the surface.
Amanda Dyar: "The Following" is a dark and gruesome show that focuses around Joe Carroll and his cult of serial killers. How did you become involved with the show?
Marcos Siega: Kevin Williamson and I had done "Vampire Diaries" together, and after he left that show and went to "Secret Circle" and I went on another show, we just started talking about some things we could work on together. He had this feature script that he was developing into a television series that he wrote a long time ago. And that is pretty much it--he sent me the pilot script and I fell in love with it.
