Leonis Productions, the Newen Studios-owned French banner created by Jean-Benoit Gillig, is developing a raft of international shows on the heels of “Liaison,” Apple TV+’s first French original.
The company reached a milestone with “Liaison,” a thriller series created and entirely penned by Virginie Brac (“Spiral”) and directed by Stephen Hopkins. Vincent Cassel and Eva Green lead a cast that includes Peter Mullan, Gérard Lanvin, Daniel Francis, Stanislas Merhar, Irène Jacob, Laëtitia Eïdo, Eriq Ebouaney, Tchéky Karyo, Bukky Bakray and Thierry Fremont.
“It’s a sprawling French-British thriller set against the backdrop of Brexit, and there’s a metaphor between the love tragedy playing as the primary plot and the political tragedy embodied by Brexit unfolding in the background,” said Gillig.
“The starting point of this series was our wish to create a series using Brexit as a canvas, and from there Virginie Brac was able to conceive a...

Ah, Hartlepool. The town where they hung a monkey many moons ago, and is also the setting for that golden oldie of comic strips, Andy Capp (there’s even a statue of the great man himself). With Looted, we have a film that’s another great ad for the local tourist board, but not much more.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s not that bad, but it’s all just a little bit lacklustre.
Rob (Charley Palmer Rothwell) is a young man with a lot on his mind. He lives at home with his dad, Oswald (Tom Fisher), and is also his full-time carer. Outside of this, he’s in a gang of friends that include Leo (Thomas Turgoose) and Kasia (Morgane Polanski). Their escapades mean that they frequently find themselves on the other side of the law, and all the time Rob has to come up with an...

This article contains Vikings season 6 spoilers.
With the release of season 6 part two on Dec. 30, Vikings has come to an end. While the spinoff Vikings: Vahalla is set to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2021, it will pick up the story of the Viking and Anglo-Saxon conflict 100 years after the last events depicted in the original series. Thus the series finale of Vikings means we are saying goodbye to all the characters whose exploits viewers have enjoyed these last seven years. Whether in the flesh or in flashbacks, this is the final farewell. And no character will be missed so much as Lagertha.
When Vikings began, in the spring of 2013, it was a largely misunderstood enterprise. Premiering as it did on the History Channel, a cable channel best known for its WWII/Hitlerian focus in the 90’s and more current shows like Pawn Stars and Swamp People, many assumed that Vikings...

An impressive film about a pair of car thieves in the north of England combines social commentary, poignant drama and lyrical cinematography
Petty criminal Rob (Charley Palmer Rothwell) has a busier schedule than most gainfully employed people in this affecting debut feature from director Rene van Pannevis. He and best mate Leo (Thomas Turgoose) steal cars for profit and pleasure, often with Leo’s giggling girlfriend, Kasia, along for the ride.
Life is less of a lark at home, where Rob is the sole carer for his terminally ill father, Oswald (Tom Fisher), a former merchant seaman who has been abandoned to asbestos-related lung disease by his negligent employer. Oswald believes – or perhaps just vainly hopes – that Rob is out looking for work during the days. There’s not much of that about in their small, port-town home.

"I'm not gonna be around for much longer..." "Don't say that." Bulldog Film Distribution from the UK has released an official trailer for an indie British crime thriller titled Looted, which originally premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival late last year. Looted is directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Rene van Pannevis, whose short film Jacked won the BIFA in 2016. The film is a semi-autobiographical account of Rene's own experiences with his father - and living on the fringes of a criminal group as a young man. Rob lives his life at 100mph, carefully balancing carjacking schemes and joyrides and caring for his dying father. But one risky job could bring it all crashing down. The film stars Charley Palmer Rothwell as Rob, with Thomas Turgoose, Morgane Polanski, Anders Hayward, Stephen Uppal, and Tom Fisher. This seems like a well-made, worthwhile UK film with some excellent performances leading the way.

Dutch filmmaker Rene van Pannevis is at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival with the world premiere of his debut feature Looted.
The UK drama - selected for the festival’s First Feature Competition - is very much the successor to the London-based director’s short Jacked, which was nominated for a Berlin Crystal Bear in 2016 and won a Bifa.

"Don't try to pay me any compliments. I have been spoiled in this respect..." Cohen Media has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic drama-mystery titled The Aspern Papers, set in Venice, adapted from Henry James's 1888 novella of the same name. The story is about a passionate young writer who tries to obtain romance letters a poet sent to his mistress. He travels out to Venice and meets a suspicious elderly woman along with her quiet niece in their grand but dilapidated palazzo. Starring Vanessa Redgrave as Juliana, along with Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Joely Richardson, Poppy Delevingne, Lois Robbins, Jon Kortajarena, and Morgane Polanski. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall, but I don't recall hearing much buzz - good or bad - about this film during the festival or afterward. This looks like a sultry, seductive Venetian thriller in the vein of classic romance...

When “Vikings” premiered on History in 2013, audiences were pretty sure they knew what they’d be tuning in to — a lot of red-bearded men in horned helmets doing battle.
But by now, just weeks away from the bow of the second half of Season 5, which starts Nov. 28 (a year after the first half of the season began), audiences have been schooled: The real story behind all the whiskers and warfare is the Viking women, as told by the women in the crew who helped bring them to life.
It’s only fitting: In Scandinavia during the Viking age, which historians date from the late 700s to the mid-1000s, women had equality and power not found in other societies of the period, including the right to divorce, inherit property — and even become warriors.

You’ve probably read our exclusive Unhallowed Ground review by now, but if you haven’t here’s the skinny: Unhallowed Ground is a brand new British horror film written by Paul Rachid, who also appears in the film, directed by Russell England (Holby City, Paranormal Witness) and starring Morgane Polanski, Poppy Drayton, Rachel Petladwala, Thomas Law, Marcus Griffiths, Will Thorp and Ameet Chana.
Six late teen/early twenties from North London single-sex private schools spend a night patrolling the eerie grounds of the historic Dhoultham School as part of an initiative with the British Army to provide rich kids with basic military training. As each hour passes and the teenagers complete their mundane tasks, they witness a series of increasingly disturbing occurrences: slamming doors, self-governing lights and ghostly apparitions.
As they spend more and more time together, personal conflicts are magnified and the School’s history erupts onto the surface of proceedings.

It is really well done, and if you haven’t started watching it yet, I highly recommend it. Here’s a description of the upcoming season from the network with some additional details on what’s in store, and new characters who will be introduced:

A month after setting a nebulous February 2015 premiere for its latest invasion, History's "Vikings" now has a specific premiere date. Season 3 of "Vikings" will hit the shore on Thursday, February 19 at 10 p.m. The 10-episode season will follow up on Ragnar's elevation to King and will find the scruffy Norsemen taking aim at a little French city known as Paris. In addition to Travis Fimmel, Clive Standen, Kathryn Winnick and Replacement Bjorn Alexander Ludwig (and others), the new season will be bringing back Linus Roache's Ecbert and introducing a slew of new characters. "Lost" and "The Strain" veteran Kevin Durand will play Harbard, a wanderer who shows up in Kattagat and fills in for the absent Viking men. Ben Robson will play Kalf, new second-in-command to Lagertha. And on the French side of the story, Lothaire Bluteau will play Emperor Charles, with Morgane Polanski as his daughter Gisla. (Cbr) Three new cast members have been added for the third season of "Vikings," the History series that retells the bloody adventures of warrior and explorer Ragnar Lodbrok. Deadline reports that "Lost" veteran Kevin Durand will join the drama as "The Wanderer," an enigmatically named character "who is not what he seems." Durand also has a starring role on "The Strain," FX’s adaptation of the Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan horror novel debuting. In addition to Durand, "Vikings" has tapped former "24" and "The Tudors" actor Lothaire Bluteau to play Emperor Charles of France, "who views the Vikings as spiritual and earthly." Morgane Polanski will play Charles’ daughter and most trusted adviser, Princess Gisla.

One of my favorite shows, History‘s Vikings, has announced new cast members for the new season, and it’s a group that should have you excited to see where things go.
For me, the most impressive note here is that Lothaire Bluteau will be joining the cast as Emperor Charles of France. One of the most woefully under-appreciated actors around, Bluteau may be best known at the moment for his work on The Tudors, but he was also the star of two of the best movies ever, Jesus of Montreal and Black Robe.
Also on board is Kevin Durand, another actor who doesn’t get the attention he deserves, who will hopefully be more solidly in the collective consciousness when Vikings rolls around again, because he is also in the upcoming The Strain.
Finally, relative unknown Morgane Polanski will play Emperor Charles’ daughter.
And so, despite ending last season with all eyes at home,...
