Storm saves Jubilee and Sunspot from an angry group of humans and Cyclops turns down Professor X's offer of friendship. X-Men: The Animated Series has a devoted fanbase, but it's not exactly considered a classic on the same level as, say, Batman: The Animated Series.
Regardless, we all had high expectations heading into X-Men '97 and the Marvel Animation series has absolutely smashed them. Perhaps the best take on these heroes we've ever seen grace the screen, Marvel Studios will have its work cut out when it comes to topping the show with its eventual live-action X-Men reboot.
In this feature, we're exploring what's worked so well in X-Men '97 and how that can translate to theaters. In other words, these are the lessons the next X-Men movie needs to learn from the revival, especially after 20th Century Fox's hit-and-miss (mostly miss) efforts.

Magneto of "X-Men" has one of the most brilliant backstories in superhero comics — they almost made a movie entirely about it. He was once a young Jewish boy when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Captured and dehumanized, he suffered at concentration camp Auschwitz like so many of his people. He survived but it convinced him that hatred is as natural to men as breathing, and so he fights to ensure the prosperity of mutantkind. This backstory was not part of Magneto's original conception (Chris Claremont added it in 1981's "Uncanny X-Men" #150), but you'll be hard-pressed to find a writer who hasn't embraced it since.
"X-Men '97" certainly has. In episode 2, "Mutant Liberation Begins," when Magneto is tried before the United Nations, he recalls how he was first put on his path when his people were slaughtered because "they called God by a different name.

In the Marvel Universe, mutants are the inevitable future ordained by evolution and the ultimate truth of humanity. While the majority of humans have accepted the much-discriminated, ostracized mutants being motivated by a feeling of either fraternity, gratefulness (X-Men), pity, or apathy, a bunch of bigoted and xenophobic ones are hell bent on obliterating the race from existence. Prejudiced against mutants to the core, people like Gyrich and Trask see mutants as the extinction of humanity; therefore, from a misplaced notion of preserving humankind, they conspire to thwart mutants at every turn. But even these hatemongers seem to be no match for the recent threat mutantkind is facing in the form of Bastion, whose heinous plans against mutants appear to be multifaceted and running way deeper than previously imagined.
Previously, as the X-Men approached a remorseful, suicidal Bolliver Trask, it was revealed that Bastion was the true mastermind behind the...

Doctor Doom has been touted to be one of the main antagonists of the MCU as the studio’s plans with Kang the Conqueror seemed to have taken a back burner due to Jonathan Majors’ firing. The character has been one of the most beloved villains in the Marvel universe and fans have been waiting for his arrival into the franchise.
Ahead of his rumored appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars, Doctor Doom made a cameo in the Disney Plus series X-Men ‘97. The latest episode of the series sees him aligned with the Zero Tolerance group, which is headed by Bastion and also has Zemo. However, Doom’s involvement with the group has irked fans as the character is not as villainous as the others.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" follow.
You may not remember that the original "X-Men" cartoon from 1992 kicked off a flurry of '90s Marvel cartoons sometimes known as "The Marvel Animated Universe." This universe is less well known than the contemporary DC Animated Universe ("Batman: The Animated Series" up to "Justice League Unlimited"). The DC cartoons were overseen by a single creative team, so the connections were organic and culminated in story arcs. The Marvel cartoons, though? They all aired simultaneously (rather than in succession like the DC ones) and had different creators, so the most intersection was occasional crossovers.
"X-Men '97" remains laser-focused on the marvelous mutants, but it hasn't been shy about including cameos from other corners of the Marvel Comics setting. Episode 6, "Lifedeath – Part 2" featured Ronan The Accuser (you might remember him as the villain in "Guardians of the Galaxy"). Episode 7, "Bright Eyes," saw Rogue butt heads with Captain America.

X-Men '97's three-part "Tolerance Is Extinction" finale kicked off today and it saw the team set out to stop Bastion's plan to destroy mutantkind.
Cable explains that, in his timeline, Bastion has created a world where the few remaining mutants are subservient to his technologically advanced humans (who have all been infected by a new strain of the techno-organic virus that led to Nathan being sent into the future as a baby).
With Rogue still comatose, the X-Men see if they can learn more about Bastion; it turns out that, after his father was infected by future technology, Bastion was conceived and mutated into a being comprised of Nimrod, the Sentinel Master Mold, and a human.

X-Men ’97 has entered its final leg of episodes, igniting a war between mutants and human-sentinel hybrids created by Bastion. As the war kicks into high gear, fans are expecting to see a slew of omega-level and beyond-omega-level mutants enter the fray, along with other heroes who are sympathetic to the mutant cause.
X-Men as they appeared in Episode 1 of X-Men ’97
The war is expected to be on a massive scale, given the number of human-sentinel hybrids that Bastion has created in secret. However, the Mutants could have some of their own heavy hitters join the fray to fight for the mutant extinction, and Beau DeMayo, the creator and head writer on the show, could have hinted at one particular mutant that fans cannot wait to see.

Like its predecessor X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ’97 remixes classic stories from X-Men comics to make them more palatable for television. But X-Men ’97 is also very much a continuation of Tas, returning to stories and themes that first aired almost three decades ago.
So it’s no surprise that season one showrunner Beau De Mayo has suggested that fans go back to a few classic Tas episodes ahead of the three-part X-Men ’97 finale, titled “Tolerance Is Extinction.” De Mayo points to the following story arcs specifically: “One Man’s Worth Parts 1 and 2,” “Sanctuary Parts 1 and 2,” “Descent,” and “The Final Decision.”

X-Men ’97 has been diving into a host of storylines from the comics, not refraining from going towards the more complex plot points that make an appearance in X-Men comics. Characters from the original animated series have been making a comeback in X-Men ’97. This has also allowed a slew of actors from the original series to return to their roles. However there is one actor who has returned in a completely different form, but still holds the fate of his character from X-Men ’97 in his hands.

Only under great duress is one’s mettle assessed; responses to troubling times are the litmus test of one’s character. While some possess the temperament to endure and gather themselves, there remain those too broken who easily resort to destructive paths. The massacre of Genosha has wrecked the X-Men in the worst way imaginable, and Rogue’s extreme reaction in its aftermath, as shown in the seventh episode of the season, is her coping mechanism. However, considering this as the lowest point for the mutants would be foolishness, as even worse is yet to come, which is teased by the latest episode of X-Men’97 titled ‘Bright Eyes’, as an evil mastermind plans to break the spirit of the mutants worldwide.
In the previous episode, it was revealed that Charles Xavier had actually survived Gyrich’s assassination attempt and was living in the Shi’ar Empire with his beloved Empress Lilandra.

The end of the fifth episode of "X-Men '97" gave fans quite the shock. Not only did the peaceful haven of Genosha suddenly find itself under attack by a massive Tri-Sentinel Master Mold that massacred unknown numbers of mutants, but the beloved X-Men team member Gambit met his demise in a final act of heroism that stopped the tragedy from getting even worse. A week later, the end of the sixth episode revealed that it was recurring X-Men villain Mister Sinister who was behind the attack, having manipulated Bolivar Trask into activating the Sentinel strike. But as we learned in this week's seventh episode, "Bright Eyes," Sinister is just one part of the equation.

As a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series from the ’90s, X-Men ’97 has really killed it with its first season. Not only does it capture the magic of the original show but it’s also successfully broken away from the original show’s limitations. For example, animators in the ’90s had to be strategic about how they portrayed violence on a kids show — Wolverine couldn’t use his claws on human or mutant enemies, so he spent a lot of his time unloading on Sentinels instead. But in 2024, we have Jubilee graphically splitting a monster’s head open with her firework powers and Gambit impaled by the Mother Mold. It probably helps that this revival of the series is as much for nostalgic adults who want a more grown-up take on these stories as it is for kids.
But it isn’t just...

The latest episode of X-Men ’97 saw the return of Professor X, who was taken to the Shi’ar empire after he was believed to be killed by Henry Gyrich in the old series. The new X-Men ’97 introduces one aspect of Professor X’s life that neither X-Men: The Animated Show nor the Marvel films ever explored. Lifedeath – Part 2, episode 6 of the series, shows that the leader of the mutants is s*xually active.

The Cbm movies and TV series touched upon the topic of superhero s*x only recently, leaving kids of the previous generations to believe that all superheroes were celibates. However, new positive changes came along as the genre started targeting a more mature audience.

X-Men will soon be making their debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, either via the multiverse or as they have introduced other heroes into the universe. With an X-Men project rumored to be in the works, and looking for release before Secret Wars rolls around, an official synopsis of the plot of the film has been made public.

This post contains spoilers for "X-Men '97" up to and including episode 6.
"X-Men '97" has been fantastic. There's nostalgia in there, sure, but also some stunning storytelling — a desire to use this opportunity to tell new stories that go harder and further on certain elements that the Fox Network couldn't touch back in the '90s.
Case in point: how episode 5 weaponized nostalgia to shatter the hearts of the audience with a devastating attack on Genosha that killed a bunch of fan favorites in what the head writer calls a cataclysmic event meant to change everything for the show. This is the moment mutants realize that things are in fact dangerous (and not just in alternate futures).
It was a bold, bloody choice to adapt one of the darkest Marvel storylines, "X-Men: E is For Extinction." This was the opening storyline of Grant Morrison's run with "New X-Men," and in the comics,...

Time and again, the X-Men saga has proved to be Marvel Comics’ key source of bold, hard-hitting, poignant storytelling, with the stories of mutants acting as an allegorized account of the real-world treatment of the marginalized sections of society. With the latest episode of X-Men ’97, titled Remember It, viewers are once again reminded of the scope of such narratives, as a devastating tragedy taking place in the mutant nation of Genosha almost reminds us of an ongoing real-world crisis.

We’re midway through ‘X-Men ’97’ now, and fans are buzzing with excitement, calling it Marvel Studios’ best in a while. Episode 5 really hit home, stirring up some wild reactions. Genosha gets hit, and Magneto and Gambit make a heroic sacrifice to fend off the Sentinels and take down Mister Mold.
Meanwhile, Cyclops and Jean’s relationship hits a rough patch as secrets unravel—Cyclops’ telepathic chats with Madelyne come to light, while Jean feels a pull towards Wolverine. Just a taste of the drama from this week’s episode!
After Genosha was destroyed, people online had all sorts of ideas about who might be responsible, from Mystique to Mr. Sinister. One theory caught attention: Cassandra Nova, a villain set to appear in the upcoming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ movie. In the comics, Cassandra Nova’s tied to a mutant genocide, so linking her to ‘X-Men ’97’ and ‘Deadpool 3’ wouldn’t be too out there.

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
Life has never been easy for the X-Men, or any mutant in the Marvel Universe. They’re feared and hated, oppressed just for being alive. They’re betrayed time and again, even by heroes who call themselves their friends.
But in the history of the X-Men, there are three stories that stand out as particularly heartbreaking: Mutant Massacre, E is for Extinction, and Fall of X. And the latest episode of X-Men ’97 just combined them all into one shocking half-hour full of deaths.
“Remember It” begins as a love letter to all things X-Men, as Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit head to the island nation of Genosha. Once the home of an oppressive human regime (modeled in the original comics after Apartheid South Africa), Genosha has become a home for mutants, a sovereign nation under mutant rule. Director Emi Yonemura and series creator Beau De Mayo...

During the early 2000s X-Men: Evolution reimagined the popular Marvel Comics team for a younger audience. The animated series ran for 52 episodes across four seasons and was the first introduction to Mutants for an entirely new generation of superhero fans. However, the series failed to bring to life one of the X-Men’s deadliest foes.

Journey becomes introspective for key X-Men members, as this week’s latest episode of X-Men’97 focuses on two separate adventures with distinctive tone and treatment, like an old-school comics double bonanza issue. On the one hand, the youngest member of the team, Jubilee, gets a reality check in the form of getting taken inside Marvel’s gameverse for a trip down memory lane, and on the other hand, Ororo is up for some nasty revelations regarding her loss of power.
Previously, members of X-Men had rescued teenage mutant Roberto De Costa from the clutches of mutant hate group Friends of Humanity, and he eventually befriended Jubilee. While saving Magneto, the new leader of the team, as decreed by the last will of the late Professor X, from the assassination attempt of X-Cutioner during his hearing at the Un, Ororo was shot by a permanent power-dampening projectile. X-Men ’97 turned in another episode of the season, revealing to audiences that the Jean Grey who has a child with Scott Summers is not Jean Grey at all. As Scott struggles to cope with the revelation, with Jean in a comma, X-Men ’97 begins adapting one of the most gripping X-Men stories…and wraps it up with a neat bow in one episode.
Jean Grey in X-Men ’97
From Jean Grey’s return to the introduction of the Goblin Queen, it was almost as if the show had too many things lined up for the episode, but did not give any of them the time to breathe. While the Goblin Queen saga had a lot of juicy details, it seems the show crossed over a lot of the drama in an effort to adapt the entire story in one episode, much to the detriment of the narrative.

A fan favorite X-Men villain returns along with the almost forgotten campy moniker of one of the core X-Men team members, as the third episode of X-Men’97 maintains the strong momentum initiated by the first couple of episodes of the series. Previously, the narrative followed the eponymous team of mutants a year after the death of their beloved mentor and leader, Professor Charles Xavier, and in his absence, Scott took on the responsibilities of leadership. As the team has their plates full while tackling the dual threat of the mutant hate group “Friends of Humanity” and Boliver Trask’s mutant exterminating abominations, an expectant Jean proposes the idea of leaving the team to Scott—for their unborn child’s sake.

The third episode of ‘X-Men ’97’ just came out, and it was quite something. It picked up where the last episode left off, with a cliffhanger, introducing new characters and plot twists. Storm met Forge, Scott, and Madelyne Pryor became parents to Nathan Charles Summers (Cable), and Mister Sinister unleashed Madelyne’s madness.
As Madelyne wreaked havoc on the team with nightmares, one standout moment was Morph’s vision. He saw Wolverine in the shower, but instead of looking away or being shocked, he jokingly offered to help with hard-to-reach places.
The scene takes a dark turn when Wolverine responds, “Always with the jokes eh Morph? As If I don’t know?” So, what’s the deal? Wild as these transformations are, they have nothing on the comic book storyline that inspired it.

The Disney Plus animated series X-Men ‘97 has been receiving positive responses since its release. The revival of the classic show X-Men: The Animated Series was in the headlines earlier this month for parting ways with showrunner Beau DeMayo. The show’s premiere on March 20 reportedly garnered over 4 million views, making it the second most-viewed animated series on the platform.

The classic 1955 movie The Night of the Hunter was adapted from Davis Grubb’s same-titled novel, and we’ve learned tonight that a brand new adaptation is now in the works.
THR reports this afternoon that Scott Derrickson will be directing the new take on The Night of the Hunter, with C. Robert Cargill (Sinister) writing.
Derrickson will write the script alongside Cargill, the report adds.
Cargill previews on the platform formerly known as Twitter tonight, “For those unfamiliar, Night of the Hunter was based on a novel that was *Much Darker* than the 1950s would allow. Very excited about this project and thrilled we can finally talk about it.”
The Night of the Hunter follows a religious fanatic, con man and murderer who marries a widow, knowing that her deceased husband had hid $10,000 from authorities following a bank robbery. The widow’s young children are reluctant to tell him...

X-Men ’97 ended its second episode with a sizable cliffhanger. As the team pondered over Storm’s parting words, before the former mutant decided to leave the team, the X Mansion saw a red-headed woman, identical to Jean, entering the mansion, looking for the X-Men.
Jean and Scott in X-Men ’97
This character is expected to be Madelyne Pryor, a discarded clone of Jean Grey constructed by Mister Sinister and brought to life by the Phoenix Force. Mister Sinister uses Pryor to manipulate Scott, who at the time was reeling from the death of Jean Grey. However, given that Pryor (or Jean) has been introduced while the other one is alive, the show could have accidentally shot itself in the foot.

Ryan Reynolds started the Deadpool franchise in 2016, re-introducing the Merc with the Mouth to the wider audience. After the success of the first movie, Deadpool 2 was released in 2018, with new characters joining the fray – including a very important mutant – Cable, played by Josh Brolin. But Cable’s real identity – his origin – was never clearly defined in the movie.
Josh Brolin as Cable in Deadpool 2
Cable aka Nathan Summers is actually the son of Scott Summers and Jean Grey in the Marvel Comics. Or at least he shares DNA with these two mutants. He gets infected by a techno-organic virus, becaue of which, his parents send him to the future to be cured. It is much later, in Cable Vol. 1 #6, that his real identity finally came to light.
The Origin of Cable’s Identity in the Marvel Comics
Cyclops and Jean Grey are two of the biggest names among the X-Men.

With a rich history as well as a complex personality, Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, the X-Men’s leader, has long been an enduring favorite. However, in the live-action adaptations of the X-Men franchise, particularly in the Fox flicks, Cyclops has been frequently reduced to a supporting role, overshadowed by other characters (particularly Wolverine).
Well, X-Men ‘97 is finally here, with two episodes released just a few hours ago. Fans of the legendary mutant team can finally celebrate, as the series appears to have redeemed Cyclops’ arc and restored the character’s true power and complexity. Of course, it is high time Cyclops received the justice he so richly deserves, after years of underwhelming portrayals.
X-Men ‘97 premiers on Disney+ on March 20th, 2024.
Created by writer Stan Lee, the founding member of the X-Men was previously portrayed by James Marsden in the Fox X-Men films.

It’s time to celebrate for the mutant superheroes of X-Men ’97. Sure, Professor X is gone and Magneto is the team’s new leader, but there’s still plenty to be happy about. The Friends of Humanity have been defeated (at least for now), their archnemesis has decided to become a good guy, and Cyclops and Jean Grey have welcomed a new addition to the family: their infant son Nathan Summers. It’s an exciting time for the team, even if the two-part premiere ends with a second Jean Grey showing up at their door, while the Jean Grey who’s just given birth watches on in horror. What the hell is all that about? (We explained that here.)
But never mind all that: little Nathan is here, but as hardcore X-Men comics fans already know, this isn’t actually the first time...

One of the best things about the X-Men is the vast roster of characters that allow a myriad of people to see themselves as a member of the mutant superhero team. But if you were a kid who wanted to be all of the mutants, you may have gravitated towards Morph, the shapeshifter who could temporarily take on the appearance and superpowers of any other mutant out there. During my childhood years, there was many an argument about who would get the honor of pretending to be Morph on the playground.
Even though Morph (originally voiced by Ron Rubin) seemed to meet his maker in the first episode of the original "X-Men: The Animated Series," the character eventually returned from his presumed grave, albeit under the influence of the villain Mr. Sinister. Morph used his shapeshifting abilities to create chaos among the X-Men on many occasions, but thankfully, he was only acting on Mr.

Cue that iconic theme tune because X-Men ‘97 has us squeezing back into our colorful spandex once again. It’s been nearly 27 years since “Graduation Day” saw X-Men: The Animated Series bow out in style, and while Fox’s X-Men movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have changed how we see Charles Xavier’s Gifted Youngsters, it feels good to be home with this nostalgic cartoon caper.
Picking up events several months after the season finale seemingly closed the book on X-Men: The Animated Series, the class of ‘97 is still living in the shadow of Professor X’s “death” in the two-part series premiere. Morph and Bishop are on the team and in the credits, while Magneto has had an apparent change of heart, choosing to honor Charles Xavier’s final wish that he take over leadership of the mutant team.

“I need the X-Men!” declares a frightened and bruised Jean Grey at the end of the X-Men ’97 two-episode premiere before passing out in front of the team. An injured Jean is distressing enough, but add to that the fact that this Jean Grey is not the Jean Grey we’ve been following for the first two episodes. It’s a second one, while the first is standing by Cyclops, watching this doppelganger in shock. For casual viewers, this cliffhanger may require an X-plainer.
When we catch up with the team at the start of the first episode of X-Men ’97, Marvel’s animated revival of the hit 90s cartoon series, a pregnant Jean contemplates leaving the team with Cyclops, where the couple can raise their son together. But that decision is delayed when Magneto shows up to honor Charles Xavier’s will and take over the mutant team.
