Born under a rock in Northern Ontario at Sault Ste. Marie, Derek spent much of his adult life as a renaissance scoundrel, musician, actor or staging technician. He studied both, Theatre Tech and later, Film Studies, at Ryerson University in Toronto, now called the "Toronto Metropolitan University". Derek Stephen McPhail resides in the charming village of Manitowaning on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada, where he focuses on screenwriting.
Derek's first published feature film script, "Outlaw Trail", is a magic realism historical western, set primarily in Texas in 1858. His second published script, "Return To Sender", based on a story idea by "Merdick Earl McFarlane", is a contemporary neo-noir crime mystery, set primarily in contemporary Atlanta, Georgia. Derek published a 3rd script, "Dreaming Together", a magic realism historical romance, set in Canada in the Georgian Bay / Lake Huron area in 1649 during a smallpox pandemic. Derek has recently published a 4th script, a sequel to "Dreaming Together", to be called "Vultures on Blue Mountain", set in Collingwood, Ontario in 1980. Derek is now working on his 5th script, the third in the "Dreaming Together Trilogy", to be called "The Great Lie".
