Terror Vision has quickly become one of my go-to labels for obscure horror titles, and they're getting a jump-start on the Halloween season with #13WeeksOfHalloween, offering an eclectic mix of new, rare, and cult releases on VHS, Blu-ray, 4K Uhd, LP, and cassette:
"Halloween is Terror Vision's favorite time of the year but it's always a bummer when it's over. Much like many of you, the beloved genre distributor begins celebrating the spooky season in September... but this year, that's not good enough - and that's why they've created #13WeeksOfHalloween.

Over the weekend, the guilds really chimed in with their awards, potentially shaping the Oscar race in a big way. We saw the Ace Eddie, the Producers Guild of America, and the Screen Actors Guild hold their ceremonies, each of which impacted things, to one degree or another. As always, Ace, PGA, and SAG have some of the most direct crossover with Academy members, so what they think does hold water. Are any one of them the be all, end all? No, but they cumulatively represent a lot of what potential Oscar voters are thinking at the moment. So, you must give them credence. The big winner of the weekend was La La Land, though Hidden Figures has now created some interesting new dynamics to the race. That film took advantage of La La Land not being in SAG’s Best Ensemble lineup, beating out Moonlight for the prize. La La Land...

Musical cements status as Oscar frontrunner.
Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt performed what looked very much like a rehearsal for another awards show at Saturday’s 28th annual Producers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills.
The La La Land producers beat out a strong field that included Arrival, Moonlight, Fences, Manchester By The Sea and Lion to claim the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
Given the track record of the PGA Awards as a bellwether of Academy Awards success, Berg, Horowitz and Platt have three hands on the biggest prize of them all heading into Oscar night on February 26.
While the best picture Oscar winner and the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award winner are often one and the same, last year’s PGA champion The Big Short lost to Spotlight on Oscar night.

Written and directed by Jacob Gentry, Synchronicity is an ambitious neo-noir time travel yarn that feels like a companion piece to Gentry’s first sci-fi feature, The Signal (which he co-directed with David Bruckner and Dan Bush). Both deal with fractured timelines to a degree, but it's his latter that proves Gentry’s keen ability to manipulate popular tropes all while creating a complex and intricate story. The film takes a bit of time to find its footing, but when it does, that’s when Synchronicity evolves into something rather special. On par with films like Timecrimes, Predestination or even Primer to a degree, Synchronicity once again proves that you don’t need a huge budget to create a compelling cinematic experience.
Synchronicity follows a beleaguered scientist by the name of Jim Beale (Chad McKnight) who, along with team members Chuck (Aj Bowen) and Matty (Scott Poythress), have invented a...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by an anonymous source. Director: Jacob Gentry. Writers: Jacob Gentry and Alex Orr. Cast: Chad McKnight, Brianne Davis, Aj Bowen and Michael Ironside. Jacob Gentry is best known to this reviewer for his work on The Signal (2007). Also very dark in lighting and setting, Synchronicity is a sci-fi thriller with heart. Unfortunately for Jim (Chad McKnight), his heart has been besmitten by a femme fatale, straight out of a noir film. But, this is neo-noir in which a financial oligarch rules the world and greed matters. Jim's time travelling experiments are a means to an ends for Klais Meisner (Michael Ironside). But, they also allow Jim to pursue Abby (Brianne Davis) - the femme fatale, across time periods and across dimensions. Heavily influenced by Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982), in lighting, setting and music, Synchronicity has something to say about our limited time,...

A number of filmmakers have, over the past few years, garnered attention and acclaim from smaller unique films that have drawn in audiences intrigued about the concept in one way or another. Jacob Gentry is no exception to that, as his 2007 feature The Signal, which he co-wrote and co-directed with two other individuals, had many people eager to see what his next feature would be. Following some work in tv, Gentry’s new feature has now been completed.
Titled Synchronicity, the film sees Gentry take on directing reins alone this time around, along with writing the screenplay from a story by Alex Orr. The film’s synopsis is as follows.

Shadows abound, pierced with swaths of light cut to ribbons by venetian blinds. Odd, angular futurist architecture juts into the sky, illuminated by spotlights from passing flying vehicles. There are fans slowly rotating everywhere. This is the future, after all. There must be fans. If nothing else, Synchronicity cuts an interesting shape, a quasi-dystopian future that seems devoid of affection, warmth. Taken purely on visuals, Synchronicity is top-notch. The problem, then, lies in storytelling.
Synchronicity presents a twisted, tangled pretzel of a narrative, a classic time travel thriller that loops back on itself multiple times, placing the audience in danger of crossed eyes. Narratives this complex have been attempted before, but where Synchronicity falters is how it conveys the narrative. The complex story is made more head-spinning than advisable by some unclear storytelling, making an otherwise good...

Set in the very near future where fuel prices are at an astronomical high and no-one can afford to drive any more, vegan schoolteacher Archie (Brune) is trying to invent an alternative engine that runs on wheatgrass, but when he accidentally cut himself he discovers that all his engine needs to work is blood… human blood. Resorting to ever more shocking and extreme behaviour to keep his blood car on the road, Archie draws the attention of the government and sex-crazed meat vendor Denise (Rowlett), much to the disgust of lovesick Lorraine (Chlumsky) who, until now, has been supplying him with the much-needed wheatgrass.

Blood Car is a sci-fi thriller set in the future. Not too far from now, gas prices have soared (even more) and few can afford to drive. Then Archie (Mike Brune) creates an alternative fuel, blood. All he needs are a few more litres to keep his beast going. Mike teams with a local meat vendor to really supe up his car. But what happens when the local townsfolk begin to disappear? Most horror fans will celebrate and Blood Car will release on DVD July 16th courtesy of Left Films. Fans of the bizarre can have a look at the film's official artwork here with the trailer below. Rampart (15)
(Oren Moverman, 2011, Us) Woody Harrelson, Robin Wright, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Ned Beatty, Sigourney Weaver, Ice Cube. 108 mins
Harrelson looks scarily at home as the most corrupt cop in Los Angeles: drinking, smoking, cheating and brutalising his way to notoriety, then stubbornly denying all culpability. It's less a straight cop story than a fragmented study of a – personally as well as professionally – rotten man. There's almost too much in the mix, but it's told with great style and anchored by a fearsomely committed performance.

Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s Underground Film Distributor index has been seriously updated pretty much for the first time it was launched two years ago.
Previously, the list only included distributors that had released films that were reviewed by Bad Lit. This update now includes films that have screened at underground film festivals, but have not yet been reviewed by this website.
Quite a few distributors already included in the list have added several more underground films to their catalogs, including Breaking Glass Pictures, which has since released Mad World, Brain Dead and Someone’s Knocking at the Door; while Factory 25 recently released Jessica Oreck’s Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo.
New distributors added to the list include Cinevolve; which released Chusy Haney-Jardine’s Anywhere, USA; and Tla Releasing, which has released Alex Orr’s Blood Car and Seth Meredith’s Dante’s Inferno.

Well, you know how these scientist’s plans go. One thing leads to another. Archie cuts his finger. Blood falls on the engine.
