The slow specialty box office is picking up. “The Lost City of Z” (Bleecker Street) opened just below the numbers posted last week by “Colossal” (Neon) and “Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer” (Sony Pictures Classics) also opened to over $20,000. And “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary” (Abramorama) showed strong initial single-theater results, with Emily Dickinson story “A Quiet Passion” (Music Box) also showing some interest.
After a promising start, “Colossal” expanded quickly, showing strength among wider audiences, along with “Gifted” (Fox Searchlight) and “Their Finest” (Stx). And holocaust drama “The Zookeeper’s Wife” (Focus) passed the $10 million mark in only its third weekend.
Festival favorite “Maudie,” a Canadian-Irish coproduction set in a small Nova Scotia town, opened in four Canadian theaters ahead of its June stateside release from Sony Classics Pictures, with a three day total of around $60,000. It stars Sally Hawkins and...

On Wednesday, a Los Angeles judge sentenced Grim Sleeper serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr. to death for the murders of 10 women during a 23-year killing spree. "It is obvious you have a deep-seeded hatred for women that started long ago," said Los Angeles superior court judge Kathleen Kennedy when she imposed the sentence of death. "Why? I don't know." A bespectacled Franklin, wearing orange jail scrubs, stared straight ahead and showed no emotion when the judge handed down the sentence. The audience, filled with victims' family members, cheered and clapped when Franklin was soon escorted out of the courtroom. In May,...

The Witch wins best debut; Sherpa wins best documentary.
Greek film-maker Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Chevalier took the Best Film Award in the BFI London Film Festival’s official competition at the award ceremony at Banqueting House on Saturday night.
The Sutherland Award for most original and innovative directorial debut went to Robert Eggers’ The Witch, while the Grierson Award for Best Documentary was presented to Jennifer Peedom’s gripping and tragic Sherpa.
Chevalier, which debuted at Locarno, screened at Toronto and won prizes at Sarajevo, is a Greek comedy about a contest of machismo among six men on board a yacht.
It took the Lff’s top prize over much fancied competition, including Lenny Abrahamson’s Room, Son Of Saul, Tangerine and Beasts Of No Nation.
Tangerine and Son Of Saul were given special mentions by jury president Pawel Pawlikowski when he presented the award to Chevalier, which he described as “both a hilarious comedy and a deeply...

In addition to some bullet point news (you’re welcome) about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we have a bunch of new images for you to admire. It’s all courtesy of EW’s latest Fall Movie Preview. Some circles are going to dive deep into these images that at first glance may not appear to reveal much of anything; but I find it’s always important to look closer.
Notice the practical effects on the image showing Daisy Ridley’s Rey? That’s enough to get any Star Wars fan excited. We also get a good look at C-3Po’s new red arm and a shot of Adam Driver’s nefarious Kylo Ren.
From EW’s story:
The Empire has morphed into a junta known as The First Order, while X-Wing pilots like Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron now fly for a splinter group known as the Resistance.

There were a number of things I did and said in San Diego this year that are not going to be covered as separate articles. In some cases, someone else at HitFix was in the room to write the thing up. In some cases, it's just about time. Whatever the case, though, here are some random impressions to help round out my coverage of the single biggest nerd hype event of the year. 1. Rob Kazinsky should be our new Shazam I met Kazinsky on the set of "Pacific Rim," and while I thought he was solid in that film, his Australian accent was a nightmare. One of the things that I found most engaging at the Entertainment Weekly "New Warriors" panel was the way he offered that accent up as his greatest career regret so far. "You don't have to stop me on the street and tell me," he said.

I was at Ebertfest last week, and at 11 in the morning on Thursday my phone - wifi-deprived and scarcely functioning - started blowing up. A social networking hailstorm descended upon me: texts, tweets, Facebook wall posts, a couple of voice mails and at least one four-paragraph email. I admit that I've been slightly hazy on the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim details since about an hour past deciding not to attend the convention, so it took me a minute or five to work out that the J.J. Abrams / Kathleen Kennedy panel on The Force Awakens had just happened in California, and the new Star Wars trailer had dropped. Here's the thing: I love Star Wars. I am a known quantity in the area of...

Star Wars Celebration kicked off just over an hour ago and J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy were incredibly pleased to be able to show all the fans this brand new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. You don’t need me blabbering on about it, give it a watch!
Some absolutely great Star Wars imagery on display there plus our first glimpse at some of the original cast; I thought I couldn’t be more pumped but…here I am.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives on December 18, 2015 and stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Harrison Ford, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, and Gwendoline Christie.

In my recent articles I attempted to cover just how much the prequels made Star Wars a better saga; how the backstory George Lucas gave us deepened our understanding of the Star Wars galaxy, how his expansion on certain elements helped us to see more into certain key elements within the original trilogy and how the knock on effects of Anakin Skywalker’s turn to the dark side were resolved with Luke’s journey in Return of the Jedi. You guys all threw in your thoughts and opinions and it made for quite a great discussion on all things Star Wars as it currently stands.
In this next article, I want to look at how that might inform the all new sequel trilogy (and potentially beyond). What might be on the cards for Episode 7 and just how difficult Disney’s re-launch of the Star Wars Saga might be. I am...

The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.
And since Ben Affleck is one of my favourite filmmakers of all time, I have been in a brilliant mood tonight, because he’s won (and very much earned) Best Director for Argo, and taken home the Best Film prize alongside his co-producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. If you haven’t yet seen Argo, I can’t recommend enough how much you should see it as soon as possible.

Back when Star Wars Episode VII was first announced and everyone was speculating about who would be the perfect director for the project, J.J. Abrams was one of the first filmmakers to comment. Asked if he could have an interest in making the movie, he noted that Star Wars is one of his favorite movies and that being a fan would add a burden of responsibility to the project, saying, "I am looking forward more than anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!. Then in December he he took it a step further and revealed that he had actually been approached by George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy as a candidate to direct the film- but that he turned the job down. Citing his commitment to the Star Trek universe and his desire to keep his distance simply ...

Massive, massive news today kids: Apparently it’s J.J. Abrams’ world, and we’re just living in it. J.J. Abrams, the Bad Robot man, who has created or shepherded nerd heaven in the forms of Alias, Felicity, Lost, Fringe, Revolution, Person Of Interest, Alcatraz, Undercovers, Cloverfield, Super 8, Star Trek, the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission Impossible: III, and Ghost Protocol, is now in charge of bringing Star Wars Episode VII to the big screen.
Back in November, Abrams was one of many people to be flattered by the idea of directing the film, but politely declined. This is what he had to say:
“Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series.

Boy-meets-tiger saga Life of Pi and epic musical Les Misérables received nine nominations each, while James Bond adventure Skyfall had eight nods and Iran hostage thriller Argo seven. Tom Hooper also was dismissed on the direction front.
Other mulitple nominations include a period film based on the famous Tolstoy novel, Anna Karenina with six and the riveting, powerhouse thriller Zero Dark Thirty and western directed by Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained have 5 nominations each.
The British awards have helped underdog films including Slumdog Millionaire, The King’s Speech and The Artist gain momentum for Oscars gold, so many Brits hoping to see nods for Skyfall.

At this point in awards season, it’s pretty hard to surprise us. The Oscar nods are going to be announced tomorrow morning, and we’re pretty sure the top of the list will look like this: Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miserables, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Life of Pi … So anyway, we could be inclined to yawn when looking at the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards (a.k.a. the BAFTAs), as the L films — Lincokn, Les Miz and Life of Pi — are in the lead. That’s why we like looking at the details, like the Outstanding British Film category, which gives Skyfall, Anna Karenina and Seven Psychopaths a chance to shine. There’s also the Rising Star award, nominated by a panel but voted on by the public. This year Elizabeth Olsen, Suraj Sharma (Pi), Andrea Riseborough (W.E.), Juno Temple (Dark Knight Rises...

The BAFTA film nominations are in. You can read the list of nominees in full here...
We are now well into awards list season. We've already had the list of Razzie nominees, and the actors and filmmakers up for an Oscar nod will be revealed tomorrow. In the meantime, here's the British Academy's list of nominees, which features a strong showing from Lincoln, Les Mis and even Skyfall - a surprising inclusion, given that Bond movies are usually overlooked at these sorts of things.
Make what you will of the list that follows, but we're more than a little disappointed to see The Pirates: In An Adventure With Scientists missed out of the animation category, and we're pretty sure Ben Wheatley's Sightseers deserved some sort of mention, too.
The BAFTA awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 10th February, after which there'll be face painting and a meat raffle.

Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.
That spoof internet ad inspired a flood of responses and was even featured on the Jay Leno show.
Director Colin Trevorrow (right) and scriptwriter Derek Connolly used it as the inspiration for their first feature, Safety Not Guaranteed, which won a screenwriting award at the Sundance Film Festival and opened in cinemas on Boxing Day, December 26.
Alison Jones chatted to Colin Trevorrow about the new film, about his plans to remake Flight of the Navigator and about those recent rumours that he was in line to direct one of the new Star Wars movies.
What was the truth behind that insane whirlwind of web speculation? And what did Trevorrow think about it all? Would...

David Strathairn has joined the cast of Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln. THR reports that Strathairn has signed on to play William Seward, "who served as Lincoln’s Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869. Seward was a passionate abolitionist and fiercely loyal to Lincoln as he served in his cabinet during the Civil War." He joins Daniel Day-Lewis as Abe Lincoln and Sally Field who stars as his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.
Here is what Spielberg had to say about casting Strathairn:
“Throughout his career, David Strathairn has consistently delivered performances of strength and character. That's why I am so pleased that he will portray the Secretary of State, who became such a dominant figure in Lincoln's ‘team of rivals’ cabinet."
The screenplay was written by playwright Tony Kushner, which is based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s best-selling book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. The book focuses on...
