Until you start watching killer rat movies, you don’t realize how few killer rat movies there are. It’s not a sub-genre that sparked off franchises (does Willard and its sequel Ben count? Let me know) or inspired Funko toys, but rather has films strewn here and there throughout horror history. Today we’re scurrying back to my particular turf for Deadly Eyes (1982), Golden Harvest’s Canadian-lensed attempt to move over from Kung Fu to Rodent Fu. (Sorry Joe Bob Briggs, I couldn’t resist.)
Released in October by Golden Harvest (the Honk Kong based studio with nearly 300 production credits) in Canada and stateside by Warner Brothers the following April, Deadly Eyes (aka Night Eyes) laid droppings all over the place according to critics and audiences alike, and was quickly relegated to clamshell heaven. Was it a film ahead of its time? God no. But Deadly Eyes is way more fun than I remembered,...

When it comes to conversations about the greatest horror movie marathon hosts, several names are likely to be mentioned right away, including Elvira, the late, great "Chilly Billy" Cardille, and Joe Bob Briggs. Featuring artwork by Justin Osbourn, Fright Rags' Joe Bob Briggs T-shirts are now available to purchase for $27.00 apiece. Their MonsterVision enamel pin, meanwhile, is priced at $12.00, and a poster signed by Briggs himself is also available for $30.00 (and limited to 100 items).

“Herschell Gordon Lewis is the man who put red meat into the American cinematic diet. Ultimately Herschell made Quentin Tarantino possible.” – Joe Bob Briggs
Herschell Gordon Lewis’ masterpiece Blood Feast (1963) was the stomach churning movie by “The Godfather of Gore” that opened the floodgates to the countless blood and slasher movie that followed since its release over fifty years ago. Blood Feast was a midnight movie drive-In mainstay for years. No Punches were pulled and no organs left inside in Blood Feast. This film was a true classick in every sense of the word. Remember this was the mid 60’s folks. Sure the effects were cheap & fake, but the bad intentions were there from the get go. Gotta love that Mr. Lewis. 2,000 Maniacs, The Wizard Of Gore, The Gore-gore Girls, and Color Me Blood Red – he cranked ’em out with no shame. That crazy Egyptian Fuad Ramese and his fowl deeds kept gorehounds,...

Recognizing that it’s more than likely an unpopular opinion, I need to come clean and confess that I prefer Tobe Hooper’s 1986 sequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2, to its predecessor, which I’m also quick to point out is an unparalleled masterpiece of the genre. This has everything to do with personal taste. Tobe Hooper is one of my favorite filmmakers of all-time, and while I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen his 1974 classic, I probably revisit Part 2 every year. It’s one of my very favorite horror movies.
The third film in a trilogy Hooper made for Cannon Films in the 1980s (the other two being the brilliantly bonkers Lifeforce and Hooper’s remake of Invaders From Mars, released just a couple of months before TCM2 in ’86), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 was the movie the director had to...

Lionsgate has revealed two new clips from The Last Witch Hunter ahead of its release on October 23rd. Also in this morning's round-up: details on the New York City Horror Film Festival and the Colorado Horror Convention, as well as information on how to watch The Walking Dead online and release details for Eli Morgan Gesner's Condemned.
The Last Witch Hunter: "The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife.

When I was a kid, I was taught that horror movies were things to be avoided; Violent, sadistic, even satanic items made by sick people. Which of course only made them more intriguing. On our trips to Blockbuster I would sneak down to the horror movie isles, this forbidden place, and look at the ghastly images of monsters and mangled bodies on the covers, only imagining the horror they contained.
In 1984, Wes Craven made A Nightmare on Elm Street and gave a physical face to our childhood boogeymen. I was far too young to see the movie, but that didn’t matter. Freddy Krueger had stepped out of the film and become part of the cultural zeitgeist, sending a young boy’s imagination spinning in the middle of the night about all the ways he could come and get you.
It wouldn’t be until several years later when I...

The Walking Dead shows no signs of rot as it signs off its 5th season with a phenomenally well written, well-directed movie-length finale...
This review contains spoilers.
5.16 Conquer
There's something to be said for The Walking Dead's expanded season finale episode from a sheer television standpoint. A 90 minute finale just feels like something special for a show that is already something special as far as television goes. There's room in the episode. While the set pieces aren't as impressive as Carol's assault on Terminus in No Sanctuary, there's more space to actually build up anticipation, and the multiple close calls all worked this week because it felt like, at any point, someone was going to die. On a show like The Walking Dead, Joe Bob Briggs' drive-in rules apply (anybody can die at any moment), but that goes doubly in a season finale.

Holy shit guys! No, seriously. Dreams are coming true with the video above. I heard about Samurai Cop in the mid 2000’s when Media Blasters put out the DVD with the Joe Bob Briggs commentary. Rumors were that the man who played the title character, Joe Marshall (aka. The Samurai Cop), Matt Hannon had shuffled off this mortal coil. Hell, that’s what I was telling people when we showed Samurai Cop at Late Nite Grindhouse. Then, last year, Hannon emerged via a YouTube video stating & proving that he was still alive and in excellent shape.
The ball started rolling from there. Gregory Hatanaka, who is behind Cinema Epoch and was releasing all of the original director’s, Amir Shervan, films, met up with Hannon and others and started an Kickstarter to get the feature some funding. Bai Ling, Lexi Belle and Tommy Wiseau join up with Matt Hannon, Mark Frazer...

“This is Joe Bob Briggs reminding you that the Drive-In will Never Die!”
In 1993, Monstervision on TNT in America, was mostly a program that aired old horror movies and science fiction with the occasional hosting from magicians Penn and Teller. During the early nineties, many cable channels hadn’t yet solidified their formats, and horror hosts were still ways to fill late night television since most channels couldn’t afford original programming. During that time, esteemed and controversial film critic John Bloom (known by his pen name Joe Bob Briggs), finished his tenure at the Movie Channel, which had also began changing its format.
Briggs was unfortunately released from his acclaimed show where he introduced uncut movies for his fans with his color commentary book ending the movies. The prologues and closers often featured comedy with the Briggs character, when he wasn’t interviewing genre favorites like Linnea Quigley. He...

The Hillbilly Horror Show is an nice throwback to the horror host roots of the likes of Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. Horror Hosts have unfortunately vacated from the horror movie experience of many of us but in the heyday there were horror hosts in every local market from NYC to the Palmy Los Angeles cityside. The beauty of a horror host is that there is ongoing commentary about the movies being shown often slightly cheesy although the emergence of the horror host really came when Universal opened up the catalogue to Saturday morning TV and those films are anything but cheesy.

4.2 117
When Teen Wolf is at its best, it is mining all possible feels out of its situations. “Feels” is a relatively new term coined by the Tumblr generation, which means that basically Teen Wolf successfully replicates the emotional roller-coaster that is the teenage experience. First love, first crush, bromances, the never-ending travails of a transforming body, Teen Wolf handles all these very well indeed, without being too heavy-handed. When the show is heavy-handed, it usually doesn't stay that way for too long. Being a teenager is a horror show, and nobody knows that better than Derek Hale.
Derek Hale, everyone's favorite grouchy mentor and foil to Stiles, was found in a teenage state (played by Ian Nelson) last week by the gang in their Mexican cave. This week he's back in...

The 8th annual B-Movie Celebration is traveling at us faster than a speeding monkey on a rocketship destined for the vast landscape of Mars, and we have the first details on what films and more will be waiting for you should you be one of the lucky ones to attend!
From the Press Release
1984 was not all Big Brother, Big Hair & Big Pants — it was also a great year for movies. This year, the annual The B Movie Celebration wants the “B” movies of 1984 to take a bow.
Many have made the claim that 1984 represented the paragon of both film-going and film-making. With films like Repo Man, The Toxic Avenger, Night of the Comet, The Last Starfighter and Ice Pirates, 1984 turned out to be a cinematic buffet; and the festival will be screening some of the best films from that glorious year, featuring live commentary from the people who made them.

When I was a kid, there were two movies that terrified me as a kid. This wasn’t the creeping dread I felt when I watched Night of the Living Dead or The Twilight Zone. No, this was outright fear, the kind that sends you under the covers, sleeping in a sheen of sweat with the lights on. And maybe it sounds silly but as someone with a highly overactive imagination who lived in the woods, I don’t find it silly at the time. For today's sophisticated audience, it's not all about jump scares – the best horror movies keep playing even if you shut your eyes
There's nothing like genre junkies to cut to the chase. The glory days of drive-in-theatre critic Joe Bob Briggs may be past ("No dead bodies. One hundred seventeen breasts. Multiple aardvarking. Lap dancing. Cage dancing. Lesbo Fu. Pool cue-fu… Joe Bob says check it out"), but his spirit lives on. While movie critics have been going into raptures over The Conjuring – comparing its director James Wan to David Lynch, calling his direction "rhapsodic", finding his film "a metaphor for moviegoing itself" – horror afficionados have been getting down to basics: how many jump scares does it have? And: are they the right sort?
You know jump scares. The moment in a horror film when the protagonist wipes the steam from a bathroom mirror and sees the psycho standing behind them.

As a collector of VHS, The Sleeper is one of those films that has been on my radar for quite some time. The film was released in a VHS/DVD big box combo set by producers Gamma Knife Films back in early 2012 – I didn’t pick up that version as I was holding out for a UK release, which never came. However cut to 18 months later and The Sleeper finally comes to DVD here in Blighty thanks to Safecracker Pictures, one of the UK’s most interesting DVD labels, who specialise in releasing independent movies that other, more mainstream, companies wouldn’t (frankly) touch with a bargepole.

One of the main attractions at this year’s Comicpalooza in Houston—in addition to appearances by the likes of Patrick Stewart, Michelle Rodriguez and Danny Trejo—was the three-day Dollar Baby Film Festival organized by Shawn S. Lealos.
What’s a “Dollar Baby?” It’s a short film based on a Stephen King story or novella. For decades, King has allowed people to acquire limited film rights to an available story for one dollar. The resulting movies cannot be released on the internet or shown at for-profit venues, which limits their availability to festivals like this one. The filmmakers can include their movies on clip reels as calling cards. King also gets a copy of the finished product. The quality of these adaptations is all over the map, but the increased availability of affordable digital cameras and video editing software means that the community is growing by leaps and bounds.

The Human Race
Written and Directed by Paul Hough
USA 2012 imdb Fantasia
The Human Race is a grindhouse drive-in classic that happens to have been made years after the drive-in heyday; at least it follows the maxim of legendary drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs, “the first rule of great drive-in movie-making: Anyone can die at any moment.”
The set-up of The Human Race is that everyone on one city block, 80 souls in total, are snatched from their lives by a white light, dropped into a strange obstacle course and told, “The school, the house and the prison are safe. Follow the arrows or you will die. Stay on the path or you will die. If you are lapped twice, you will die. Do not touch the grass or you will die. Race or die.”
And naturally, there can only be one winner. To paraphrase Glengarry Glen Ross, “Anybody want to see second prize?...

Oh, if only Movie 43 had screened for press before it opens this weekend. The premise -- a search for the world's most banned movie -- and cast are tantalizing. (Dennis Quaid, Greg Kinnear, Seth MacFarlane, Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Emma Stone, Richard Gere, Naomi Watts, Uma Thurman, Halle Berry and a dozen other famous faces -- yeah, even Snooki -- in the same movie? Yowsa -- I'm reminded of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.) But prudent filmgoers should wait awhile to find out if this star-studded but unreviewed collection of comic shorts is any good. Let your friends take one for the team by seeing it first.
Two other new releases are critically vetted and worth a look, depending on your taste: Amour is outstanding but oh-so-sad, and Quartet is a Dustin Hoffman-helmed comedy that's garnering some good reviews but may not be for everyone.
The Love God?...

Since I started writing for Sound on Sight during Fantasia 2011, 2012 was my first full year of writing for the site. I started the year by joining Josh on the Mousterpiece Cinema Podcast. During the year I attended Fantasia for the 15th time in 16 festivals and I attended Ridm (Québec’s only Documentary Film Festival) for the first time.
The following is an expanded version of my Sound on Sight ballot for the best feature films of 2012. I should probably explain that I see fewer feature films every year than say Ricky or Josh. On the other side of that, as the Festival Director of the YoungCuts Film Festival, I watch more short films than most (over 1,000 short films per year). It is entirely possible that I didn’t see your favourite feature film this year. On the other hand, I also probably watch some feature films that you never saw.

Dear Lord. After a sprawling, whiz-bang premiere, this week American Horror Story: Asylum slowed down the pace just a titch (what, no aliens this week?!) but still managed to pack in an exorcism, a hit-and-run, and some awesomely bitchy dialog. Let's visit Briarcliff and see what's up with our favorite crazies, shall we?
Jenna Dewan Tatum screams and runs, screams and runs. This must be what Justin Bieber's life sounds like. She grabs Adam Levine by his remaining arm and tries to drag him to safety - but just as she gets him to the big steel door, Bloody Face grabs his legs and yanks him in the other direction. Make a wish!
Unfortunately, he doesn't snap in two. She slams the door and watches through the glory hole as ol' Parakeet Puss perforates her hubby with his lobotomy-thingy:
Bloody Face then starts banging on the door like it...

As a dumb kid, I spent considerable time camped out in front of cable TV. The programming I begrudgingly missed for school or basic hygiene, I captured with my Vcr set to record the maximum hours allotted on a standard VHS tape.
Poorer quality, sure, but it was suitable for the six hours worth of garbage movies and random junk I recorded on a daily basis. I was, however, able to discover some pretty nifty shit during that wondrous time; films like The Zero Boys, Hunter's Blood, Neon Maniacs, Alligator, Quiet Cool, Waxwork, and Dudes remain staples of my diet to this day. Today, I'm a dumb grown-up, and at the risk of this sounding like an Abe Simpson rant, I feel sorry for kids growing up today. I really do. My growth...

A Priest, A Rabbi and Your Mom Walk Into a Movie Theatre…
You might think that your Mom disapproves of all horror films on principle. At least that’s the stereotype: the wagging finger; the warning that horror films cause nightmares. But the truth is that this is merely a bit of parental judo, reverse psychology designed to push us to watching horror films, because nothing warns us and upholds the moral order like a horror film.
What are the elements of a horror film after all? There is a monster; there is a sense of danger (as critic Joe Bob Briggs puts it “Anyone can die at any time”); the deaths are usually gruesome; and there is usually a moral. If you think about it, fairy tales and horror films are not that far apart – they are even closer to one another in the fairy tales original Grimm-er forms,...

Herbie Rides Again
Written by Bill Walsh, based on the novel Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford

“The first rule of all drive-in sequels: make the same damn movie you made the first time!”

Herbie Rides Again stands proudly alongside Halloween III: Season of the Witch as the two films that most deliberately break the sequel rule. It is debatable which is more cruel. Halloween III has no Michael Myers (and for that matter no witches) but never explains why. No doubt many in the audience when it was first released must have been wondering when Michael Myers was going to show, right up until the moment the film ended.

Haywire

USA/Ireland, 2011, imdb
At the risk of throwing the spotlight on our obsession with Haywire, after Simon‘s dismissive review, Ricky declaring it one of his favorite films to come out in January and the podcast where Justine had to pull them apart, when they argued about it, here I am throwing my oar in, hopefully with something new to say. Haywire and the Difficulty of Being a Female Action Hero
Haywire reunites director Steven Soderbergh and writer Lem Dobbs, the creative duo behind the masterpiece The Limey. Haywire shares a flashback structure similar to The Limey, though nowhere near as layered and complex. Both films also share a dark moral ambiguity.
The Limey is about a bad man going after a badder man who may have killed his daughter. The...

Chicago – I was So with “Chillerama” when it started. The concept is right in my wheelhouse as I’ve long been a fan of B-movies, having been raised on the works of Roger Corman, Troma, and the writing of Joe Bob Briggs. If “Chillerama” can’t appease me, it’s unlikely to work for anyone. Bad news. Despite its best intentions and clever foundation, the execution here is just off, resulting in a hit-and-miss film that does way too much of the latter half of that equation.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
Much like “Grindhouse” was an ode to an era of bygone cinema, “Chillerama” attempts to recreate that anything-goes mentality that resulted in some truly over-the-top cult classics by using more than one style and more than one filmmaker to make an anthology of B-movie lunacy. The movie opens with a guy digging up the corpse of his wife and preparing to...

Screaming in High Heels comes from the devoted mind of journalist and filmmaker Jason Paul Collum, whose interest in all things Slumber Party Massacre led him to become a fascinated fan of women who star in horror movies. In Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era, Collum details the horror movie careers of the three women who coined the phrase “Scream Queen”: Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer.
