Documentaries about films are probably among the most difficult cinematic exercises a director has to pull. Edmund Yeo, however, took it a step further, by shooting a documentary about the short film “Pigeon”, by Isao Yukisada in order to pay tribute to another director, the late Yasmin Ahmad, whose pictures shaped Yukisada’s perspective on Malaysia.
“Yasmin-san” screened at the 8th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival Spring Showcase
In that fashion, the documentary begins with interviews of the case and crew, where Yukisada admits that Ahmad’s spirit permeates the film, both in its aesthetics, but also in essence, since Sharifah Amani, Ahmad’s regular, is also cast in “Pigeon”. Through these interviews, we learn a lot about the film, but soon Ahmad takes over, particularly through Amani, who considers the director one of the most important individuals in her life, even calling her “my mother”.

[Thanks to our friend Josh Hurtado for providing an advance look at the schedule.]
It is July. For me this means gearing up for my annual marathon movie event, the Asian Film Festival of Dallas. The organizers have been tossing hints at titles out via facebook and Twitter, but yesterday they finally let the cats out of the bag.
This year Affd is screening 30+ features as well as their usual shorts programs. I'm pretty sure this may be their biggest festival ever in terms of variety. The schedule looks great, with some really awesome titles and some surprises (which are almost always my favorite part!). Affd has a newly redesigned website that makes it easy to explore the titles, watch trailers, make your own schedule, and learn about the events. Facebook friends and Twitter followers are always the first to know about cool events and news, so be sure to check them out there as well as the official site for all the latest!

Controversial Malaysian director Yasmin Ahmad has died. She was 51.
The moviemaker passed away on Saturday after suffering a brain hemorrhage, according to local media reports.
Ahmad roused outrage in her mostly Muslim homeland after documenting inter-racial romances in her pictures.
She was honoured at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2007, picking up two awards for her movie Mukshin, which portrayed love in pre-teens.
Ahmad also won a string of prizes for 2004 romantic comedy Sepet, which told the tale of a teenage Malay girl who falls in love with a Chinese boy.
Mukshin sparked criticism from Islamic leaders in 2007, who blasted the film for encouraging women to behave like men, branding her work "immoral".

There are some here at Twitch who are admirers of Yasmin Ahmad’s work. She has even contributed a film review for us here before. So it came as quite a shock for us when we heard the news yesterday that the Malaysian director had collapsed during a meeting at a TV station in Kuala Lumpur, and was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for an emergency surgery.
She is reported to be in stable but critical condition. She had suffered a stroke during the meeting, and an in-house doctor and some others helped to apply CPR on her until the ambulance arrived.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

Why are most mainstream film awards crap? I don’t know; don’t ask me.
The Festival Filem Malaysia (Malaysian film awards) continues to be a baffling, mind-boggling affair year after year. They once snubbed one of the most important Malaysian filmmakers, Yasmin Ahmad, with the excuse that her films continue to show nothing new or different. Like many other awards events, the decisions can sometimes be rather weird. For example, for this year’s awards, probably the worst film released this year, the laughable horror film Congkak, picked up four nominations, including, gulp, Best Director. That itself, is a horror story. It also got one for Best Sound, when the direction for the sound seemed to be to make everything as loud as possible.
But among the jury this year is independent filmmaker Amir Muhammad, whose mainstream film, Susuk, co-directed with Naeim Ghalili, picked up 8 nominations, including Best Cinematography (by Devan R.
