Comcast CEO Brian Roberts’ Pay Rises to $35.5M, President Michael Cavanagh’s Drops to $29.6M in 2023
NBCUniversal owner Comcast has disclosed higher 2023 compensation packages for chairman and CEO Brian Roberts and president Michael Cavanagh, along with pay details for other top executives.
Comcast’s proxy statement, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, a day after the company’s first-quarter 2024 earnings report, showed that Roberts’ pay hit $35.5 million in 2023, up 11 percent compared with $32.1 million in 2022. He had made $34 million in 2021, $32.7 million in 2020 and $36.4 million in 2019.
Cavanagh’s compensation package was worth $29.6 million last year, down 27 percent from $40.5 million in 2022 when he had served as chief financial officer until being promoted to president in October 2022, which brought him a pay boost. Jason Armstrong then took over as CFO in early 2023.
Cavanagh saw increases across most compensation categories, but his options awards for 2023 amounted to $7.0 million, compared with $21.1 million in 2022 when he was elevated.
Robert’s salary remained at $2.5 million in 2023, but his stock awards rose from $13.4 million in 2022 to $15.0 million,...

The bill, introduced by Senators Cornyn, Klobuchar, Blackburn, Welch, Wicker, and Lujan, and the bipartisan Ticket Act (H.R. 3950), sponsored by Reps. Bilirakis, Schakowsky, and Armstrong, which passed out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, address the live event ticketing system. The letter claims current practices leave fans and artists alike exposed to the predatory practices of bad actors within the secondary ticketing market.

The five works in progress range from queer adult anime, comedic doc, and traditional non-fiction to family dramas, helmed mostly by newcomers, and reflect the dynamic filmmaking community of Southern Australia, set to tempt potential co-financiers in Cannes.
So far two titles have received international backing. “Mockbuster” has been pre-sold to Giant Pictures and Drafthouse Films for North America, on top of domestic distribution in Australia via Umbrella Entertainment; Kelly Schilling’s drama “With or Without You,” handled locally by Icon Film Distribution, has been picked up by global sales agent LevelK.

On the morning of July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins sat atop another Saturn V at Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. The three-stage 363-foot rocket used its 7.5 million pounds of thrust to propel them into space and into history.
On July 20, 1969, at 10:56 p.m. Edt, Armstrong planted the first human foot on another world. With more than half a billion people watching on television, he climbed down the ladder and proclaimed: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
And now some 55 years later, NASA is preparing to send people back to the lunar surface. Scheduled for September 2025, the Artemis II flight test will be NASA’s first mission with crew under Artemis and will pave the way to land the first woman and next man on the Moon on Artemis III. "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" has turned 15 years old. Debuting in 2009, it was the second (and more faithful) anime adaptation of the original manga by Hiromu Arakawa. It's one of the best anime of its decade and genre (battle shonen) too. For as much stock as you can put in fan community rankings, "Brotherhood" maintained the #1 spot on MyAnimeList for years and was only recently dethroned by 2023's breakout hit, "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End."
"Neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Cowboy Bebop" first converted me to anime, while I admit I watched the 2003 "Fullmetal Alchemist" first. Still, I'd say "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" is what made me an anime fan, not just an occasional admirer. It's one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had with a TV series (I watched the last 13 episodes in a single sitting) and the high I've been chasing with anime since.
"Fullmetal Alchemist" is different from many other shonen (young boys) anime/manga.

Taylor Armstrong is less than impressed with a rumor circulating on social media that she dated her one-time Real Housewives of Beverly Hills co-star, Kyle Richards.
In a satirical post shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), an account shared two photos of the reality TV stars alongside text that claimed Armstrong revealed to GQ the two women were in a relationship “for about five months in 2016.”
The Real Housewives of Orange County alum responded that the post is “complete bulls–t.”
“Kyle is like family to me and always has been,” Armstrong shared.
“I never said this, thought this or experienced this.”
“Lies, lies, lies,” she concluded the post.
Taylor Armstrong is seemingly unaware the post came from a parody account
The post came from a social media account that regularly posts parody tweets centered around the Real Housewives universe, but it seems Armstrong was unaware of that at the time of her response.

Back in 2012, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong famously had a meltdown during the band’s performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival. The band was in the middle of “Basket Case” when organizers gave them the wrap-it-up sign. “Give me a fucking break. One minute left? You’re gonna give me one fucking minute?” Armstrong responded. “Let me tell you something, I’ve been around since 19-fucking-88. And you’re gonna give me one fucking minute? I’m not Justin Bieber, you motherfuckers!” He then proceeded to smash his guitar and walk off the stage.
Following the performance, Armstrong entered rehab for alcohol and prescription pills. Discussing the incident in a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, the singer recalled: “The next morning, I woke up. I asked [my wife] Adrienne, “How bad was it?” She said, “It’s bad.” I called my manager. He said, “You’re getting on a plane, going back...

While the first season splattered the Invincible logo with blood as the episodes progressed, symbolizing the lies and the violence that Mark is going to face going forward, Season 2 sees the title crack and chip, revealing a black and blue version of it, which super-fans know does not bode well for the enemies of Invincible.

Could a romance be in cards for Dr. Aaron Glassman in The Good Doctor‘s final season? TV Insider can confirm that Bess Armstrong will be back in future episodes as a recurring guest star. Armstrong debuted as Dr. Lim’s mother, Eileen Lim, in The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 4 on Tuesday, March 26 on ABC. Richard Schiff‘s character found himself on an unexpected date in “Date Night.” What started out as a favor for Dr. Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) when Eileen came to visit her daughter while in town for a drug trial. Glassman convinced Lim, his co-president at the hospital, to attend two board meetings without him, and in exchange he took her mother out shopping to keep her entertained. Little did he know that he would find the outing so entertaining himself! Conversation flowed with ease between Glassman and Lim’s mother as they walked around. The...

There was much excitement when news broke that Taylor Armstrong would be the first Real Housewife to switch shows.
Armstrong was coming off a highly-praised return to reality TV with a stint on The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip Season 2.
There were immediate alarm bells when Bravo revealed she would be serving as a friend of the housewives on The Real Housewives of Orange County.
Given that she was part of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills‘ glory years, she had seniority with the franchise that many of Rhoc’s cast never had.
Honestly, Emily Simpson and Gina Kirschenheiter have been turning in storylines that should have found them demoted to friends for many years, so it would have been better to kick things off with Armstrong as a full-fledged housewife.
Happiness looked good on Armstrong, and she exceeded expectations throughout the season, thanks to her connections with some of the cast members,...

Juxtaposing the story of the murder of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba with a musical tour of jazzman Louis Armstrong and with the expansion of the United Nations after the independence of many African countries in the 1960s might be tall order. Trickier still would be telling this complex story, full of many characters and plot swerves, in a nonlinear manner while filling the screen with written clues providing context like a bibliography of an academic thesis. Writer and director Johan Grimonprez sets himself a difficult task with “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” yet accomplishes it with astonishing success. The film plays like both a dense historical text and a lively jazz concert while proving itself to be an invigorating piece of documentary filmmaking.
Touching on far more than the decolonization of Africa, Grimonprez’s ambitious essay film encompasses the political and historical upheavals the world over — including the alleged involvement...

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Tmt Conference in a session that was webcast, he was asked about the recently unveiled sports streaming joint venture of Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox Corp. “We’ve seen a lot of value in having sports and entertainment in one portfolio,” Armstrong responded. “Because as important as sports is, and it’s super important as an acquisition driver, it ends up being about 10 percent of our overall usage … but what are people sticking around for and doing in between sports is between our pay-one original library,...

Louis Armstrong arrived in the Congolese capital, Leopoldville (now known as Kinshasa), on October 28, 1960, armed with his trumpet and wiping sweat from his brow. His visit was part of a U.S. State Department-sponsored tour of Africa, an arrangement Armstrong felt ambivalent about. Still, the Congolese people gave Satchmo, as the American jazz trumpeter was known, a near royal welcome. Drummers and dancers carried him to his performance venue on a red chair, fashioned like a throne. Civilians cheered him on. Ten thousand people showed up to watch him play.
This was a momentous occasion, a storied event for the newly independent republic of the Congo. Four months before Armstrong came to play jazz, the country had freed itself from the colonial grip of Belgium to become one of the more than dozen postcolonial African nations formed in 1960. But the region was still plagued with problems, most of them stemming...

During a show with his cover band The Coverups, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong invited Courtney Love to the stage to perform Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” and “He’s a Whore” and Tom Petty’s “Even the Losers.”
The concert took place at The Garage in London on Tuesday, where Armstrong and his band covered The Ramones, David Bowie, Bryan Adams, The Strokes, The Clash, and Buzzcocks. Armstrong then had Love join to perform “He’s a Whore” and “Even the Losers,” and later for “Surrender” during the show’s finale.
After Armstrong introduced Love, she responded by telling the audience, “Thank you, Billie Joe. My name is Courtney Love. You may not remember me. I’ve been living in a cave in Birmingham for about nine years. We’ll give this a fucking try, right?” Watch a clip of Love’s performance below.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong invited Courtney Love onstage to join his cover band, the Coverups, Tuesday night in London, where they performed Tom Petty and Cheap Trick songs at The Garage, a 600-capacity venue.
The band performed a number of covers, including Plimsouls’ “A Million Miles Away” and Ramones’ “I Wanna be Sedated,” alongside songs from the Pretenders, Bryan Adams, and the Clash, as Billboard reports. But the big surprise of the night was to come about halfway through their set.

At long last, Franklin Armstrong has gotten the spotlight. After 55 years, the first Black character inducted into the Peanuts gang gets to show off his complexities beyond his complexion in Apple TV+‘s latest Peanuts special, Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home Franklin. Right in time for Black History Month, no less.
The special focuses on the titular character depicted as a socially awkward kid who struggles to make new friends organically in the new neighborhood his family moves into. When he befriends hapless Charlie Brown, they instantly bond and enter a soapbox derby race. Franklin was never given this much attention or personality despite his long-running presence in Peanuts. As overdue as this special was, the significance of Franklin as a character cannot be overstated -not only to the Peanuts series but also to the diversity across the comic medium and the voices it inspired. One of whom was a co-writer on the special.

Thank goodness for no-shows. Had the controller of what was then BBC Choice turned up to the ‘rehearsed read’ for a potential studio sitcom in the very late 1990s and liked what they’d seen, we wouldn’t have Peep Show. As it reportedly went: BBC Two passed on it. BBC Choice didn’t see it. And everything ended happily ever after.
Peep Show creators Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain first met the show’s stars David Mitchell and Robert Webb on a BBC comedy writing project in 1998. That went nowhere, but sparked a partnership that led to the acclaimed nine-series sitcom on Channel 4. Before it led there, it almost led to “All Day Breakfast”, the rejected comedy out of which Peep Show grew.
As Robert Webb describes it in the introduction to 2008’s Peep Show: The Scripts and More, “All Day Breakfast” was about “two men in their mid-twenties,...

Indie film studio and distribution company Good Deed Entertainment (Gde) has announced this week that they have wrapped production on their inaugural original production, the horror trilogy Fresh Hell. Just completed, the three feature-length films in the series are eyeing a summer 2024 release via Gde’s horror vertical Cranked Up Films.
Fresh Hell is a three-feature film anthology series from writer/director Quinn Armstrong; the films are titled Dead Teenagers, The Exorcism of Saint Patrick, and Wolves Against the World, each different film said to be “linked by time and space.”
“The first horror movie I ever remember watching was Creepshow and I still think that horror anthologies are the backbone of the genre,” says Armstrong. “It’s been such a pleasure to work in the tradition of horror anthologies to create Fresh Hell, an anthology of features with a modern twist.”

The annual Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala is much like a Rolling Stones tour: For years, those who have been lucky enough to attend wonder if they just saw the last show. And yet somehow, a bit unbelievably, there’s always one more.
Forty years in, the gala was back at the Beverly Hilton once again, remaining the Grammy Week’s marquee people-watching event as an impressive collection of stars including Mariah Carey, Meryl Streep, Cameron Crowe, Julia Garner, Ted Danson, Forest Whitaker, Renee Rapp and many others piled into the hotel ballroom.

The trailer for the latest Apple TV+ Charlie Brown special is here, and no offense to Peppermint Patty, Lucy, and the rest of the crew, but this looks like it's set to be the best Peanuts character spotlight story yet. The new animated special is titled "Welcome Home, Franklin," and it's set to finally shine a light on Franklin, Charlie Brown's laid back friend who joined the comic strip in 1968. Notably, Franklin is the only Black character in the main Peanuts gang lineup that's featured prominently in several of the most popular specials, and his role in the friend group has led to plenty of memeing and criticism over the years.
In the social media age, Franklin is perhaps best known for his appearance in "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving," where he's seated awkwardly far across the table from all of his white friends. Screencaps from the 1973 special tend to go viral around the holiday season,...

Many people often blasphemously (and hilariously) joke around that Morgan Freeman is God. Not only because of his pitch perfect casting as God but also due to his smooth, defining and, yes, god-like is Morgan Freeman’s voice that one can’t picture penguins or parts of nature or, yes, God, without hearing the man. One reason could be that we’ve only ever really known Morgan Freeman as an older actor, not striking a chord with mainstream audiences until he was in his 50s.
Soon enough his skills, screen presences and voice had Hollywood calling every time they needed a kind wise grandfather types or a grizzled vet from either side of the the law or any type of narration in any type of film. That persona has marked him as a welcome figure throughout modern cinema – despite the nearly constant cash grabs that pad out the unfortunate bulk of his filmography.

Peacock, the streaming service of Comcast’s entertainment unit NBCUniversal, grew its fourth-quarter revenue by 57 percent to surpass $1 billion for a quarter for the first time, while narrowing its loss. The streamer ended 2023 with 31 million paying subscribers, the media, entertainment and technology giant disclosed Thursday.
Comcast president Mike Cavanagh said at an investor conference in early December that Peacock had reached 30 million subs. It ended September with 28 million subscribers after adding 4 million during the third quarter. That meant a gain of around 3 million in the final quarter of 2023.
Comcast CFO Jason Armstrong told analysts during a morning call that the 3 million new Peacock subscribers during the latest financial quarter came in part from viewers drawn to NFL and Big Ten football games, without specifying actual numbers. NBCU’s loss related to Peacock amounted to $825 million in the fourth quarter, compared with a year-ago loss of $978 million on revenue of $660 million.

Jamie Child’s directing debut follows a former motocross champ through tedious scrapes and strident geezer movie cliches
It could theoretically be an enticing proposition: a moody crime thriller set in the north-east, with proven TV talent Jamie Childs making his feature directing debut. But this lands with a sickening thud: what we get is a charmless anti-Get-Carter of dullness, with all the strident geezer movie cliches that somehow stay stubbornly alive in British cinema. The action sequences are lifeless and often simply tedious, the characters are inert and unconvincing and there is some catatonically wooden acting.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen plays Jack Dawson, nicknamed “Jackdaw”; he is a biker and former motocross champ who has come back to his home town after a spell in the army. In need of cash, he rashly accepts a dodgy job from a criminal acquaintance in the club scene to pick up a hidden package.

Awards season is here, which means it is also time for the annual Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies, which aims to (dis)honor the least successful films of the year, has announced nominations for its 44th edition.
The most-nominated film is “Expend4bles,” the fourth entry in the action-packed, but critically underwhelming, “The Expendables” franchise. It received seven nominations. Tied for second place with five noms are “The Exorcist: Believer,” the revival of the classic horror series, and “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a blood-soaked take on everyone’s favorite honey-loving bear. Two big-budget superhero movies, DC’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” both got four nominations.

Green Day’s latest album, Saviors, has arrived, and though you’ll easily find the new tracks on a number of algorithmic playlists, you won’t get any brownie points from the band for getting your music that way. In a new interview, the pop-punk trio shared their opinion: “finding your music via algorithms [is] just lazy.”
The comments come from a new discussion between Green Day and The Sun, in which bassist Mike Dirnt explained that he likes to “organically find” new things. “Social media is great for kids, but if you’re finding your music via algorithms then that’s just lazy,” reads his full quote. “All I can say is just clear your search history to find new [stuff].”
For his part, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained that his distaste for algorithms centers on how they can manipulate content. “With all the algorithms that people live on, there’s so much false information,...

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong has shared the story of meeting one of his heroes, Eddie Van Halen, revealing that the guitar legend “started crying” during their backstage encounter.
During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday (January 17th), Stern brought up the fact that the first concert Armstrong attended was a Van Halen show. “When I saw Van Halen in ’84, I was 12, and they were my favorite band, and I cried,” began the Green Day singer-guitarist. “It’s like his guitar playing came from a different place. In a conversation with moderator Seth Meyers, the cast opened up about when and how they were told Logan Roy was getting killed off early on in Season 4.
Matthew Macfadyen said he “held out until Episode 5” of the final season to find out about who would succeed Logan on the show.
J. Smith-Cameron jumped in to say that producers like Jesse Armstrong and Mark Mylod “warned” the cast in groups ahead of Episode 3 (“Connor’s Wedding”) about what would happen to Logan (Cox).
“Wasn’t it the read-through?” Alan Ruck questioned.
“There was a Zoom,” Macfadyen clarified.
“Oh! You weren’t invited, Alan,” Smith-Cameron joked.

Premiering out of Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Competition, the impressionistic essay film “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” refracts the plot against Patrice Lumumba through a kaleidoscopic lens. Cutting between historical footage of the Un General Assembly and home movies shot in liberation-era Congo, weaving in a diverse set of perspectives, and setting the pace to a non-stop rhythm of bebop, rumba and classic jazz, director Johan Grimonprez evokes the euphoria of post-colonial possibility and the heartbreak of the dashed hopes and violent reprisals that would ensue.
“At first, I wanted to explore the colonial legacy of my own country,” says the Belgium-born Grimonprez. “I was already mesmerized by the story of Andrée Blouin, who was an independence leader, an advisor to [Ghana president] Kwame Nkrumah and chief of protocol for [first Congolese prime minister] Patrice Lumumba, but who was almost written out of history. And as a filmmaker, I like to explore those intimate stories within a wider,...

Twenty-four hours after a big night at the Emmys, which included a win for best drama series, the cast of Succession reunited for a rare Q&a discussion in Los Angeles.
Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun, J. Smith Cameron, Alan Ruck, creator Jesse Armstrong and director Mark Mylod took part in the conversation on the Paramount lot, with Seth Meyers serving as moderator and joking that Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook and Alexander Skarsgård were not in attendance as they “are in production in a spin-off of Succession that nobody else here is in.”
Early on in the chat, Cox recalled Armstrong telling him that his character Logan Roy would die midway through the fourth and final season, teasing, “I was given the ultimate short shrift. ‘Get the fuck off the set. We don’t want to see you anymore, we’ve had enough of you, you’ve...
