Robyn McCall will continue righting wrongs for another season.
CBS has ordered a fifth season of The Equalizer, its drama series starring Queen Latifah (who also executive produces) as McCall, a former CIA operative turned freelance problem solver for people who have nowhere else to turn. The show is a reimagining of the 1985-89 series of the same name and not connected to the Denzel Washington-led film franchise that’s also inspired by the original series.
With the renewal, The Equalizer will pass the original series in the number of seasons it has aired (though not yet in episode count — the 1980s series ran for 88 episodes, and the current show will end this season with 56).
With the pickup of The Equalizer, CBS has only one scripted series — NCIS: Hawai’i — awaiting word on its future. The network plans to announce its 2023-24 schedule on May 2.

“The Equalizer” has been renewed for Season 5 at CBS, Variety has learned.
“’The Equalizer,’ led by the incomparable Queen Latifah, has all the best elements of a powerful drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “The series is stacked with suspense, heroism, high stakes and formidable characters our audience roots for. We look forward to another dynamic season.”
With the renewal, the only current CBS series awaiting word of its fate is “NCIS: Hawai’i.” The network has renewed much of its scripted lineup already, including recent pickups for “Elsbeth” and the “FBI” franchise. CBS recently announced it was canceling both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas,” while shows like “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “Blue Bloods” and “Young Sheldon” are coming to an end.
Per CBS, “The Equalizer” is currently averaging over 10 million viewers per episode in Live+35 multiplatform viewing. The show is based on the 1980s CBS series of the same name.

CBS has picked up a fifth season of drama The Equalizer, starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah, for 2024-25.
As Deadline reported last week, the renewal was fully expected, with the delay related to lead studio Universal Television negotiating a deal with Queen Latifah. It recently closed, paving the way to a renewal.
So far, The Equalizer‘s seasons had been capped at 18 episodes, which is something top talent often request when signing on for a broadcast drama series. There was an effort in the Queen Latifah negotiation to increase the number to 20 or more but I hear Season 5 will again consist of 18 episodes.
After Elsbeth renewed and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas canceled last week, NCIS: Hawai’i remains the only CBS scripted series in limbo.

As Deadline reported last week, Hawai’i’s future is said to be the subject of tough business conversations, with a partial Season 4 of 13 or fewer episodes still a possibility. It could be a final chapter for the show, the first installment in the NCIS franchise with a female lead.
The Equalizer has been a strong performer for CBS, currently ranking as the #8 most watched among all non-sports broadcast programs, averaging 7.89M linear viewers (in Nielsen most current data) and over 10 million viewers in Live+35 multi-platform viewership. It also is the #1 entertainment program among African Americans.

Co-produced by CBS Studios, The Equalizer is one of four drama series Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, makes for CBS, along with the three FBIs, all of which were also recently renewed, the flagship for three seasons.
A reimagining of the classic series, The Equalizer stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn.
Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira and Laya DeLeon Hayes also star. Andrew Marlowe, Terri Edda Miller, co-showrunners Joseph C. Queen Latifah is determined to fix one of the most glaring flaws in the film industry: the unrelenting lack of representation, access, and opportunity for women filmmakers of color.
"When you speak to two out of three Black people, when they say they don't see themselves represented in the media, that's a problem," she tells Popsugar. The multihyphenate says she's found "one of the ways in which we can make a difference," though. That solution? Queen Collective, Procter & Gamble's powerful talent development initiative she helped launch in 2019, in partnership with her company Flavor Unit Entertainment and Tribeca Studios, that aims to create more gender and racial equality behind the camera.

CBS has renewed its hit drama The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah, for Seasons 3 and 4, beginning with the 2022-2023 broadcast season, the network announced Thursday.
The two-season renewal reflects the strength of The Equalizer‘s ratings performance — it is Sunday’s #1 scripted series, averaging 9.46 million viewers. Season to date, the show has amassed 1.2 billion potential social media impressions, according to CBS. In anticipation of a pickup, The Equalizer recently set new showrunners, Joseph C. Wilson and Adam Glass, who will succeed at the helm the series’ developers, Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller.
Additional renewals are expected in the coming days. As Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva previously reported CBS’ top scripted series, FBI, as well as spinoffs Most Wanted and International are in renewal negotiations with lead studio Universal Television and fully expected to continue, also possibly with multi-year renewals. Fellow Uni TV co-produced Magnum P.I. also has a chance to return.

Queen Latifah has thrived in the entertainment business — from music to movies and television into the beauty industry and beyond — for more than 30 years. But the Grammy and Emmy winner and Oscar nominee doesn’t take time to reflect on her successes.
“I’m always looking forward to the next thing,” Latifah says. “I don’t really rest on my laurels. I rarely stop to say, ‘Oh, damn, you did this; you were the first to get that.’ I only realize that when people introduce me for something. And I’m like, ‘Gosh, how long is this intro?’”
On this afternoon, though, it’s not about accolades; instead, she’s driving around town running errands. She’s just wrapped Season 2 of “The Equalizer,” the CBS reboot in which she stars as vigilante Robyn McCall. Exclusive: Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller, who created the CBS series The Equalizer based on the 1980s show, are stepping down as showrunners of the hit drama starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah after two seasons. Joseph C. Wilson, who has been on the show since the first season, and Adam Glass (The Chi) have been named new showrunners for Season 3.
CBS is yet to renew any of its Universal Television-co-produced series, The Equalizer, the three FBI dramas and Magnum Pi. All look good to continue, with the highly-rated FBIs and The Equalizer considered a slam dunk. The hire of new showrunners further solidifies The Equalizer‘s outlook as networks and studios usually go through the process when a renewal is expected.
“We are incredibly proud of the work we did to bring The Equalizer to audiences,” Marlowe and Miller said in a statement to Deadline.

Girls Trip alums Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah will reunite in an upcoming episode of CBS’ The Equalizer.
Smith will guest star as Jessie Cook, a savant-level thief with a photographic memory. Though she’s brilliant and the best at what she does, she’s also devious, unpredictable and amoral. Briefly recruited by the CIA for her skills, Jessie and McCall once worked a mission together back in the day, and though the two get along like oil and water, they’re a whole lot of fun to watch.
The casting marks a reunion for Smith and The Equalizer‘s Queen Latifah, who both starred in the 2017 film Girls Trip. The two also appeared together in Set It Off, and Latifah co-starred in The Secret Life of Bees, which Pinkett Smith exec produced.

CBS has renewed “The Equalizer,” starring Queen Latifah, for a second season.
The hour-long drama premiered last month in the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot. Airing immediately after the game, the debut averaged 23.8 million total viewers. That was down from what Fox drew to the Season 3 premiere of “The Masked Singer” on the post-game slot a year earlier, but that Super Bowl was much more highly rated than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ blowout victory this year over the Kansas City Chiefs. “The Equalizer” premiere also drew a 5.1 rating in the 18-49 demo. It was the highest-rated entertainment program since 2020’s Academy Awards telecast. The premiere retained 40% of the Super Bowl audience, the highest post-game retention rate for any Super Bowl lead-out since Fox’s “New Girl” in 2014.

CBS has renewed the Queen Latifah-led reboot of “The Equalizer” for a second season.
The series debuted following last month’s Super Bowl Lv to 23.8 million viewers. Though it was the lowest-rated post-Super Bowl show ever (thanks to a 14-year low for the game), “The Equalizer” had the best retention for any show that premiered out of the big game in eight years. Through four episodes, the series has averaged 14.6 million viewers and ranks No. 1 for scripted series in the key adults 18-49 demo, partly due to its big Super Bowl number.
The show’s string of luck with lead-ins continued this past Sunday when it aired after Oprah’s bombshell interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which drew north of 17 million viewers.
“The Equalizer” is a reboot of the ’80s CBS series that starred Edward Woodward; Denzel Washington then played the lead role in a pair of film adaptations.

Exclusive: CBS’ The Equalizer, coming off its high-profile premiere after the Super Bowl, has suspended filming.
According to sources, a positive Covid-19 test result was produced yesterday as part of the show’s rigorous safety protocols. Immediate contact tracing began as outlined in the guidelines set by state/county and in the NBCU Production Playbook. Out of an abundance of caution, the production, based in New Jersey, has asked those in close contact with the impacted individual to self-isolate and paused filming.
I hear the situation is being closely monitored and it is unclear how long the temporary shutdown will last. For now, filming has been paused for a few days and the productions schedule is being adjusted to accommodate that.

Queen Latifah seeks to stake her claim in The Equalizer franchise as she takes on part-time mom and part-time hero Robyn McCall in CBS’ reimagining of the classic 1985 series. While the Girls Trip actress may be the first Black woman portraying the Equalizer in the franchise’s span, powerful Black women seeking to do right by the little guys have made their marks throughout history, she said.

Queen Latifah makes her debut as an under-the-radar crime fighter in the teaser for CBS’s The Equalizer.
The teaser, which dropped on Saturday, unveils the secret life of Latifah’s Robyn McCall. When Robyn’s daughter asks her about abrupt departure from work, Robyn shares the ever-popular nonanswer: “It’s complicated.” However, clips of Robyn protecting herself and others from dangerous situations prove otherwise.
Robyn’s daughter, however isn’t the only one seeking to learn more about her new side gig. Chris Noth’s William Bishop warns that the CIA is also on the hunt for answers as Robyn takes on a new, dangerous lifestyle. While Latifah’s Robyn hesitates to answer questions about why she’s decided to be a new hero, she knows exactly who she is and isn’t afraid to share it.

New CBS drama The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah has landed a plum post-Super Bowl slot for its series premiere. It will air immediately following CBS Sports’ broadcast of Super Bowl Lv on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021 on CBS. It will move to its regular Sunday time slot on Feb. 14, 2021.
The decision was made after CBS brass saw the first completed episodes of The Equalizer, which started production earlier this fall.

CBS has picked up three new series for next season: The Equalizer reboot starring Queen Latifah, Silence of the Lambs sequel Clarice starring Rebecca Breeds; and the Chuck Lorre-Marco Pennette multi-camera comedy B Positive headlined by Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford. The dramas have received straight-to-series orders, while B Positive was the only completed broadcast pilot this season, which was decimated by the coronavirus-related Hollywood production shutdown. As part of the pickups, Chris Noth has joined the cast of The Equalizer, and the remaining cast of Clarice, led by Kal Penn, has been revealed.
With the TV industry in flux, CBS has been the most proactive with decisions on pilots, recently passing on drama The Lincoln Lawyer, which had a series production commitment, from A+E Studios and CBS TV Studios, and comedy Fun, from Warner Bros. TV. I hear no other CBS pilots have been killed at this time.

Despite the coronavirus shutting down production on the majority of pilot season, CBS ordered three new series for next season, including its “Silence of the Lambs” sequel from Alex Kurtzman and Queen Latifah’s reboot of “The Equalizer.”
Additionally, the network ordered its latest series from uber-producer Chuck Lorre in “B Positive,” which stars “Silicon Valley” alum Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford about a therapist who becomes friends with his kidney donor.
The “Silence of the Lambs” sequel — titled “Clarice” — will follow Clarice Starling six months after the events of the movie. Rebecca Breeds takes over the role famously played by Jodie Foster in the 1991 movie. “The Equalizer” will see Queen Latifah step into the role played by Edward Woodward in CBS’ 1980s version, and more famously by Denzel Washington in a pair of movies.
Earlier this week, CBS renewed 18 series for next year.

CBS has made three series pick ups for the 2020-2021 season.
On the drama side, CBS has ordered the “Equalizer” reboot starring Queen Latifah and “Clarice,” which follows Clarice Starling in the aftermath of “The Silence of the Lambs.” On the comedy side, the network has picked up the multi-cam “B Positive,” which hails from Chuck Lorre.
The shows mark the first shows that were going through the normal pilot season process to get picked up for next season. Nearly all pilots were unable to complete filming before the Covid-19 pandemic forced a suspension of prodution. “B Positive” was one of the only pilots to complete filming before that happened. CBS had originally ordered 14 pilots this season, with both drama “The Lincoln Lawyer” and comedy “Fun” having been passed over in the past week.
CBS renewed the vast majority of its scripted lineup earlier this week, with 23 current shows now set to return next season.

Three aspiring filmmakers couldn’t contain their enthusiasm when Queen Latifah entered Tribeca Studios in lower Manhattan on Wednesday to mark the kickoff of talent development initiative The Queen Collective. When Latifah greeted the trio, they jumped from their seats to give her hugs.
Queen Collective is Latifah’s effort to open doors for new talent in the film industry by hand-picking two documentary projects from young women of color to champion. In its second year, Latifah, along with partners Procter & Gamble and Tribeca Studios, received double the number of submissions over the first year, which yielded about 60 initial treatments. The three winners, picked by Latifah and her partners, receive mentorship, education, funding, distribution, media opportunities and other forms of support as they develop and eventually premiere their documentaries at the annual Tribeca Film Festival in April.
The goal? To give opportunities to those who wouldn’t necessarily have...
