Riley Day is an Australian sprinter and Olympic athlete. Once touted as one of Australia's most talented juniors, Riley Day made her Olympic debut in Tokyo 2021. After an outstanding 2021 domestic season which saw her regain her best form for three years, she smashed her personal best clocking 22.77. She then added the national title in April to confirm her Olympic debut. Going to Tokyo Riley boasted more experience on the track than most 21-year-olds after rubbing shoulders with the likes of Usain Bolt at a young age the big stage was unlikely to faze the cool operator. She harnessed that experience clocking 22.94 in the heat to progress to the semi-final, where she smashed her PB clocking 22.56 to finish fourth. During 2021 she had moved from 13th to 8th Australian all-time.
Selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games in Nassau in July 2017, she won gold in the 200m in a time of 23.42, as well as silver in the 100m (11.59). She added gold in the mixed 4x100m relay. While in the Bahamas she was named in the 200m in the Australian senior team for the 2017 IAAF World Championships, courtesy of an IAAF roll down. Aged 17 she became the youngest Australian 100m/200m athlete to compete in an individual event in the history of the championships and also the youngest female competitor overall in the championships. She placed seventh in her 200m heat in a time of 23.77.
At the Australian Championships/Commonwealth Games trials, she predictably won the 100m in 11.56, but astonished the athletics community by clocking 22.93 in the 200m final into a 1.7m/s wind. The time was the third fastest in Australian junior history behind the high-altitude performances of Raelene Boyle and Jenny Lamy in Mexico City, and also moved Riley to number 13 on the all-time list. At the Games she made the 200m semi-finals.
Later in 2018 she carried an injury during the 2018 World U20 Championships, not starting in the 200m semi-final. She was on the National team at the 2019 World Relays in Japan where they clocked a stunning 43.19. Mid-year she made the 200m semi at the World University Games and won silver on the 4x100m relay. Injury foiled any prospects of compete at the World Championships in Doha.
Riley Day has traveled with filmmaker Jane Larkin, and was exposed to her film debut, where she played herself, in the independent feature film, 'The Edge'.
