If you want to get all sentimental about your history, Lil Nas X isn’t interested. “I don’t wanna knooooow past lovers and relations,” he sings on Kevin Abstract’s new song, “Tennessee.” “I just wanna goooo to the bedroom, get you levitating.” In the video, Lil Nas X gets right in a guy’s face, showing how serious he is. The clip itself is a celebration of gay love since both Nas and Kevin Abstract are two of the most prominent out rappers.

Sky Ferreira made a surprise cameo at Coachella Saturday when the singer appeared onstage before Kevin Abstract’s set to deliver a cover of Lady A’s “Need You Now.”
Without any official announcement, the leather jacket and sunglasses-clad Ferreira sauntered out onstage to the shock of fans, and promptly debuted her synth-laden (and unfortunately abridged) rendition of the smash single by the country band formerly known as Lady Antebellum.
Just as mysteriously as she emerged, Ferreira departed, leaving the former Brockhampton rapper Abstract to begin has set as planned.

Brockhampton founder Kevin Abstract has shared his third studio album, Blanket, out now via Video Store/RCA Records, it marks his first solo LP since the group announced an indefinite hiatus early last year.
To record Blanket, Abstract linked up with fellow Brockhampton member Romil Hemnani and multi-instrumentalist Jonah Abraham, the latter of whom is best known for working on Playboi Carti’s Whole Lotta Red.
In a statement, Abstract named the rock bands that influenced the project. “I wanted to make, like, a Sunny Day Real Estate, Nirvana, Modest Mouse type of record,” he said. “But I wanted it to hit like a rap album.” To help him achieve that sound, he tapped an appropriate crew of guest performers including folk singer-songwriter Kara Jackson, shredder Mj Lenderman, Scottish rock group Pilot, and Abstract’s returning collaborator Roy Blair.

Brockhampton founder Kevin Abstract has shared another new song, “Running Out,” from his upcoming solo album, Blanket, out Nov. 3.
The song finds Abstract continuing to explore the contours of indie and alternative rock, with a simmering lo-fi guitar riff that gives way to the uneasy keen of a synth. The song is moody and somber even as Abstract maintains his penchant for pop craftsmanship, especially with his melodic choices as he sings, “I really think you understand/I’m guilty, boy, in my grief/I really think you understand me...

(October 4, 2023) – After his surprise intimate performances in New York last night and Los Angeles last week, Kevin Abstract marks his official return to his solo career. With the release of his new single, “Blanket,” via Video Store/RCA Records, Abstract sets the tone for this next phase of his storied musical career. The single arrives with an accompanying video co-directed by Kevin Abstract and Cole Bat. “Blanket” serves as a taste for this new chapter of Kevin Abstract’s career and sees him breaking new sonic ground – a marked change from both his work in Brockhampton and his two solo albums to date. With Brockhampton done, Kevin Abstract is ready for a new era. On Wednesday, the musician released the single “Blanket,” a rocky, ominous track that features just a few lyrics with repeating yelps backed by a rocky guitar and drums.
Clocking in at less than 2 minutes long, “Blanket” seems to be the first taste of the new music from a rock album on the way. Abstract recently performed solo shows at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s Masonic Lodge and at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right, where he debuted the tracks on the upcoming record.

After teasing a new rock album at recent gigs in Los Angeles and New York, Kevin Abstract has released a new single, “Blanket,” marking the Brockhampton co-founder’s formal return to solo music.
On the track, Abstract alternates between whispering, “Memory, memory, memory,” and yelping over scuzzy grunge guitars, making it feel like more of a preview of fully fleshed-out songs to come. It arrives with an accompanying video Abstract co-directed with Cole Bat, in which the artist watches the end of the world on the news while surrounded by gigantic, fuzzy monsters. Watch the clip below.
In 2021, Abstract dropped a few solo singles, “Sierra Nights” with Ryan Beatty and “Slugger” featuring slowthai and $not, ahead of last year’s easy life collaboration “Dear Miss Holloway” and “Easy v2” with Baird. His last solo album was 2019’s Arizona Baby.

From the Beatles to Odd Future, when a beloved, successful, and ceiling-shattering group parts ways, it always feels bittersweet. Since arriving in the early 2010s, Texas-bred alternative hip-hop crew Brockhampton have been one of rap’s most artistically and socially progressive groups. But considering their record-label woes, the 2018 sexual-assault allegations against founder Ameer Vann (who subsequently left the group), and the unruly creative climate of a relentlessly evolving, 13-member musical collective, the group’s breakup isn’t a shock. Still, on their final album, The Family, they’re going down...
