Cynthia Erivo’s journey to Egot goes back to her performance as Celie in the most recent Broadway revival of “The Color Purple.” After winning the Tony for Best Actress (Musical) in 2016, she went on to take home the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album as a principal soloist on the cast recording and an Emmy in the now retired category of Best On-Camera Musical Performance in a Daytime Program for when the cast performed on “The Today Show.” This year, she received two Oscar nominations for Kasi Lemmons’ biographical film, “Harriet” in two different categories: Best Actress and Best Song for co-writing “Stand Up” with Joshuah Brian Campbell. While Erivo’s likely not going to take down the current Best Actress frontrunner, Renee Zellweger (“Judy”), could her narrative of being a double nominee help complete her Egot in Best Song?

Avenue Q, the Tony-winning adult-friendly puppet show that played Broadway for six years before moving to its current Off Broadway home nine years ago, will close April 28, 2019.
The departure will leave New York without Kate Monster, Lucy The Slut and the Bad Idea Bears for the first time in 15 years.
“We are incredibly proud of the fact that Avenue Q transformed the careers of so many people in our company throughout its run,” said producers Kevin McCollum, Robyn Goodman, Jeffrey Seller, Vineyard Theatre and The New Group. “The show gave audiences the opportunity to laugh, escape from the outside world for two hours and have tons of fun. Avenue Q proved to be timeless and we learned that sometimes it takes a puppet to make us realize how remarkable, complicated and messy it is to be human.”
When it closes next spring, the triple-Tony winning musical will have played 6,537 performances...

The movie musical certainly had a heyday in the 1930s and 40s, but thanks to films like 2001's "Moulin Rouge!" and 2002's "Chicago," musicals have made a comeback throughout the aughts and the teens during this millennium. With Clint Eastwood's adaptation of the popular stage musical "Jersey Boys" opening this weekend, we got to thinking about what musical theater productions are worthy of a film adaptation and which directors would be perfect to bring them to the silver screen. Here's our list of musicals that haven't yet gotten film adaptations and who we think should take them on. Let us know what shows you want to see on film, and who you think would be the perfect director. New York — Theater producer Robyn Goodman walked into the popular Broadway restaurant Angus McIndoe in mid-2003 and bumped into Nathan Lane, sipping wine.
He told her that he'd just seen her raunchy new downtown musical.
"You're not moving that to Broadway, are you?" he asked her in disbelief.
"Actually we are, Nathan," she told him.
Fast forward to the Tony Awards.
"Who hands me my Tony for the show?" asks Goodman, with a smile. "Nathan Lane."
The musical was "Avenue Q," the groundbreaking show that combined Muppet-style creatures with human actors to create something funny and dangerous, paving the way for "The Book of Mormon."
With its puppet-on-puppet sex, off-kilter songs like "It Sucks to Be Me" and general naughtiness, "Avenue Q" was a blast of tequila at a time when Broadway was safely drinking vino.
"Everyone in the business thought we were crazy," says Goodman, who would go on...

Chicago – The puppets are back in town. Those R-rated, sexually-inclined, potty-mouthed denizens of Avenue Q have once again taken over the neighborhood where they are appearing at Broadway in Chicago’s Bank of America Theater. Now in its seventh year Off-Broadway (where the production recently transferred from its previous home on the Great White Way), the Tony Award-winning musical by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx continues to tempt and tickle its Sesame Street fanbase on the road.

Marco Pennette (Samantha Who?) is at work on the book for a stage musical based on Hanna-Barbera’s classic Flintstones. According to Variety, the musical has been conceived by Warner Bros. Theater Ventures. Jeff Marx (Avenue Q) is writing the music and lyrics with Jake Anthony. Gary Griffin (The Color Purple) will direct with no casting as yet.
“Pennette's script will rely on contemporary issues,” the trade says. “Wilma, for example, mulls leaving Fred because he still acts too much like a caveman and hasn't adapted to more modern ways. Barney and Betty tackle fertility issues before deciding to adopt. Musical will also tackle global warming -- but in this case, as The Flintstones takes place before the ice age, the characters will confront ‘global cooling’."

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are taking a comedy musical about the Mormon faith to Broadway.
The pair have teamed up with Jeff Marx - the brains behind successful stage comedy Avenue Q - to develop a script for Mormon Musical.
New York stage veteran Cheyenne Jackson has already been cast to star in the show, which he is convinced will be a hit - albeit a controversial one.
Jackson tells the New York Post's Pop Wrap, "It's hilarious, very acerbic and biting. It offends everybody but does what South Park does best, which is, by the end, it comes around and has something great to say. I play the main missionary."
Rehearsals are set to start in December, and a debut is expected in Manhattan's famous theatre district in 2009.
