Paul Thomas Anderson is reuniting with his Radiohead cohorts.
The Oscar-winning auteur helms Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s latest music video for band The Smile along with Tom Skinner. The Smile’s new track “Wall of Eyes” is from the eponymous album, set to be released January 26 by Xl Recordings.
Anderson directs the trippy black-and-white music video for “Wall of Eyes,” which centers on Yorke wandering through London. Yorke is shown alone in a pub, staring at a literal wall of eyeballs with a Lynchian twist, and later among dozens of versions of himself. The music video was filmed on location at The Mildmay Club and on the streets of London, England from October 24 to 26, 2023.
“Wall of Eyes” also features strings by The London Contemporary Orchestra, conducted by Hugh Brunt. The video is produced by Sara Murphy, Erica Frauman, and Shirley O’Connor, with Andy Jurgensen editing.

“King Richard” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 6. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” — as well as “Belfast” and “No Time to Die.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “tick, tick…Boom!,” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “Don’t Look Up,” plus “Cruella,” “The French Dispatch” and “Licorice Pizza.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to take home the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in nine of the 13 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture. With the announcement on Feb. 1 of the contenders for the Artios Awards, which are bestowed by the Casting Society of America, we’ve now heard from all 13 guilds. The CSA was the only group to hold off till the end of Oscar nominations voting. The actors, art directors, cinematographers, costume designers, directors, film editors, makeup artists & hairstylists, producers, sound editors, sound mixers, visual effects wizards and writers all weighed in on or before the start of balloting on Jan. 27.
“Dune” had racked up a perfect score by reaping nominations with each of the first dozen guilds but was snubbed by the CSA.”West Side Story” is next with 10, missing out for film editing and lensing. The stylish “No Time to Die” has eight.

The nominations for the 2022 Ace Eddie Awards announced on Thursday (Jan. 27) include our Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, “Dune,” along with three of the other four films we’re predicting to reap bids in that race: “Belfast,” “Don’t Look Up” and “The Power of the Dog.” While “West Side Story” was snubbed by the American Cinema Editors we expect it to be the fifth Academy Awards contender.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals.
“Belfast,” “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “King Richard” and“No Time to Die.”
Facing off against “Don’t Look Up” on the comedy side are “Cruella,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) has nominated “Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” in the category of feature film drama at the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards.
In the best edited comedic feature category, “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “Tick, Tick…Boom!” all received nominations.
Among the animated features nominated were “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.” The TV nominees include “Succession” and “The White Lotus.”
The Eddies are considered a precursor for the best picture and best editing categories at the Oscars. Five of the past 11 winners for best edited drama feature went on to win the film editing Oscar.

Nominees for the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards include feature dramas “Dune,” “Belfast,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog,” along with feature comedies “Licorice Pizza” and “Don’t Look Up.” Also getting comedy nods were “Cruella,” “The French Dispatch,” and “Tick Tick Boom.” The winners will be announced live during the Ace Eddie awards March 5 at the Ace Hotel theater.
“Dune,” “Belfast,” “King Richard,” “Don’t Look Up,” and “The Power of the Dog” have the strongest chance of getting Oscar nominations. “Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” have been nominated as the best dramatic film editing of 2021 by the American Cinema Editors, which announced the nominees for the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards on Thursday.
Those five films will compete in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category, while the field in Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) will consist of “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
The most surprising omission was probably “West Side Story,” while Ace Eddie voters also bypassed “Nightmare Alley,” “Coda” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Nominations for the editing of animated features went to the same five animated films that have also been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Visual Effects Society and Art Directors Guild: “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and last year’s winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

Featuring potentially star-making turns from Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim, Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, Licorice Pizza, is not only one of the director’s more interesting character-driven films, but also possibly one of his best.
With Licorice Pizza, Anderson takes a stab at the portrayal of young love in the San Fernando Valley, circa the early 1970s. Specifically, the story centers around Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) and Alana Kane (Alana Haim) as they meet, fall in love, have relationship problems, make up (sort of), and seemingly move on together with their lives.
As with many of his other films, Anderson wears more than one hat in addition to directing Licorice Pizza. He is also the writer of the screenplay as well as a co-cinematographer (along with Michael Bauman). That kind of hands-on involvement permeates the film throughout and gives it a cohesive feel from beginning to end. Much...

Having edited Paul Thomas Anderson’s Junun, Anima, and his Haim and Radiohead music videos, as well as working on the editing team for Inherent Vice and Phantom Thread, it was a more than natural fit when Andy Jurgensen was tasked with editing his first narrative feature for the director. With a defined yet still wholly surprising structure, Licorice Pizza is a feat in momentum-building and Jurgensen’s exemplary editing results in each beat––whether hilarious, emotional, stressful, or slyly distributing––hitting just right.

The Gotham critics named the Japanese import “Drive My Car” as Best Picture and the Cali crew concurred. Directed by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, “Drive My Car” tells the story of a stage actor and director who is happily married to a playwright, who mysteriously disappears.
Last year the west coasters opted to award their top prize to a TV series: “Small Axe,” a 5-part anthology series that streamed on Amazon. In 2019, Lafca previewed the Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards when it went with “Parasite.” Prior to that the L.A. critics had lined up with the Oscars in both 2016 and 2017, when they foretold the upsets by...

The 2022 Critics Choice Awards nominations announced on December 13 are topped by “Belfast” and “West Side Story” with a leading 11 bids each, followed closely by both “Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” at 10. “Licorice Pizza” and “Nightmare Alley” earned eight nominations apiece while both “King Richard” and “Don’t Look Up” picked up six. All of them number Best Picture bids among their haul. That race is rounded out by four-time nominee “Coda” and two-time contender “tick, tick…Boom!” (See the full 2022 Critics Choice Awards nominations list below.)
All of these titles save for “tick, tick…Boom!” make up our predicted Top 10 nominees for Best Picture at the Oscars. We have “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was also nominated in just two categories here, just ahead of this Netflix tuner in our official odds.

Licorice Pizza cinematographer Michael Bauman, editor Andy Jurgensen and production designer Florencia Martin said director Paul Thomas Anderson used 1970s processes to create the MGM/United Artists Releasing film. The trio spoke about the upcoming pic, about coming of age in the San Fernando Valley in that same era, during Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles award-season event Sunday at the DGA Theater.
“Most of the time you’re using more modern glass, you get a sharper image,” Bauman said. “That was the exact opposite of what we’re doing here. We had a set of lenses Gordon Willis used from the ‘70s. The C Series is a very old series of lenses too. It adds that texture in the image.”
Jurgensen said Anderson shot Licorice Pizza on 35mm film, already a rarity in 2021 Hollywood; 70mm prints are blown up from 35.
Bauman said he screened film dailies every day, like...

Auteur Paul Thomas Anderson ushers in his breeziest, most light-hearted effort yet with “Licorice Pizza,” a film that could be an all-around awards player, possibly nabbing him an overdue Academy Award for best original screenplay. Add in debut performances from Cooper Hoffman — son of late Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman — and singer-songwriter Alana Haim, and the film could steal the hearts of awards voters in the months to come.
The comparisons to Cameron Crowe’s coming-of-age film “Almost Famous” will be plenty, in addition to parallels to another 2000 movie, “High Fidelity,” as well as “Dazed and Confused” (1993). Anderson has been nominated for eight Oscars over his career, failing to walk away with a statue:
“Boogie Nights” (1997) – original screenplay “Magnolia” (1999) – original screenplay “There Will Be Blood” (2007) – picture, director and adapted screenplay “Inherent Vice” (2014) – adapted screenplay “Phantom Thread” (2017) – picture and directing
Despite its lighter tones, Anderson’s film may not be beloved by all.

Our sincere thanks to Andy Jurgensen for his review of Amy Berg's documentary and comparison to the documentary trilogy by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. In 1994, Damian Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were tried and convicted in a West Memphis court of the murder of Steven Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore. The trial was a sensational one, with prosecutors claiming that Echols was a Satan worshiper and with the help of Misskelley and Baldwin, tortured and killed the young boys in a ritualistic rage. Only teenagers, Misskelley and Baldwin received life sentences and Echols was given the death penalty. In the subsequent 18 years since their lockup, there has been a growing support around the three men, with many doubting the...

Mountains of thanks to Andy Jurgensen (@theJURG) for visiting the top of Main Street, Park City on multiple occasions last week and filing this awesome roundup! Now in its 18th incarnation, the Slamdance Film Festival is now considered Park City's true showcase for micro-budget filmmaking. Their motto "For Filmmakers, by Filmmakers" represents the dedication to a true community of emerging talent that can sometimes lack at the celebrity-driven Sundance Film Festival running simultaneously down the street. Of the 7 diverse films I was able to catch this year (4 narrative, 3 docs), all represent an original voice and worthy additions to the festival's lineup. Blending the line between documentary and fiction, Welcome to Pine Hill is an intriguing character study about a former drug...
