St. Symeon(949-1022)
- Writer
Saint Symeon the New Theologian, as he is known, is an Eastern Orthodox
saint. Born in the Byzantine Empire in 949 and died in 1022. Presided
as Abbot at St. Mamas Monestary in Constantinople. He delivered sermons
stressing that Christianity is only meaningful when the living Christ
can be encountered personally. Many people of the day thought this an
impossibility but although controversial he felt compelled to share his
personal experiences of Christ. His prolific work is "The
Discourses".
