Originally released in 2006 and earning two BAFTA nominations for Best Character and Best Story, Rogue Trooper was one of the undiscovered gems of the PS2 – and for those gamers that played it, it still remains one of the best comic book, nay licensed, games on Sony’s console Ever.
Technically (literally, from a technological aspect) a precursor to Gears of War, Rogue Trooper Redux brings the same mix of stealth-action gameplay, cover-based combat and epic set pieces to the Nintendo Switch – and this edition enhances the original brilliant third-person action/adventure game with HD graphics, remodelled assets, new special effects and dynamic lighting, modern controls, extra difficulty settings, a revamped cover system and more; and given the there is literally nothing else like it on Nintendo’s hybrid console, Rogue Trooper Redux stands head and shoulders above the rest of the eShop crop.

When it comes to my comic book reading preferences, I have always been an unashamed fan of American comic books. I read my first Superman story at the age of 6 and never looked back. At that time though, in the late 1970′s, American comic books weren’t always that easy to find, and 2000Ad was a little bit beyond me at first (although that changed in the Eighties ). What I could find however were copies of The Eagle, the now legendary British weekly comic, starring a certain Dan Dare. Sure, he wasn’t quite Superman, who is, but he was to my young eyes pretty cool nonetheless.
Since then I have always had a soft spot for Dan Dare, and when he has periodically been relaunched, and reappeared in various comics and magazines I have usually had a glance.

[Editor’s note: Mild spoilers for the graphic novel “Watchmen,” written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons, below.]
It begins: The build-up to what could be HBO’s next landmark television event. In a photo posted to Instagram, “The Leftovers” showrunner Damon Lindelof announced that it was “Day One” — which HBO later confirmed meant that the writers’ room for his next project, an adaptation of the 1986 graphic novel “Watchmen,” was open:
According to an official statement from HBO, “HBO has committed to the pilot and back up scripts,” but details beyond that haven’t been made available.
However, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic graphic novel, well known to comic book fans and connoisseurs of great storytelling alike, has enough of a legacy to inspire questions. The biggest question, of course: Will “Watchmen” be a limited series or an ongoing drama?
It’s become an increasingly complicated question of late, as it now seems possible that every TV show, no matter how theoretically close-ended, could potentially be rebooted or continued.

Based on the acclaimed comic book by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar, 2015's Kingsman: The Secret Service was a crass, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the spy films of the '60s and '70s. Co-written and directed by English filmmaker Matthew Vaughn (of Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class), the stylish and subversive send-up became the filmmaker's most commercially successful film to date. Enter the highly anticipated sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, a movie so overblown and preposterous that it feels less like On Her Majesty's Secret Service and more like the deranged lovechild of Austin Powers and Crank. This sequel picks up a year after unrefined street kid Gary "Eggsy" Unwin (Taron Egerton) joined the Kingsman, England's super-secret spy agency, and saved the world from Richmond Valentine's neurological wave broadcast. Since then, Eggsy has taken his late mentor Harry Hart's code name, Galahad, and is living with Crown Princess...

“The Leftovers” may have departed HBO, but Damon Lindelof is still here — and he’s getting back to work.
Variety is reporting the co-creator of the most critically-acclaimed drama series of 2017 is in talks to return to the pay cable giant for a new adaptation: “Watchmen.”
Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ limited series of comic books was published by DC Comics in 1987 to great reviews and booming sales. In 2009, Zach Snyder adapted the graphic novel collection into a movie for Warner Bros., which was met with mixed critical reaction and middling box office returns, given its budget.

Lindelof is under an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, but the HBO series is not expected to be connected to the film. In 2015, it was reported that HBO was interested in making a “Watchmen” series with Zach Snyder, but nothing developed beyond a meeting between the network and director. Lindelof is expected to start over, rather than adapt any pre-existing scripts.
“Watchmen” has long been considered a tricky project to bring to screens. The comics’ story focuses on an alternate timeline where superheroes change the course of human history. After emerging in the ’40s, superheroes helped the United States win the Vietnam War, but the Watergate scandal was never brought to light and Nixon remained president through the early ’80s. By 1985, when the story primarily takes place, the U.S. is headed toward World War III (against the Soviet Union) and superheroes are outlawed. Some have retired, while others are working for the government.

Functioning as a serious, dramatic story, “Watchmen” deconstructs the traditional superhero comics that preceded it. During an investigation into the murder of a superhero, Doctor Manhattan, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and more superheroes uncover a massive government conspiracy.
The original comics covered just 12 issues, telling a complete story, but there’s no word so far as to whether the HBO series will be an ongoing property or a limited series. Lindelof has made it known in the past that he’s a proponent of shorter series with definitive end dates.

The latest in a long-line of pop-culture documentaries that capture the zeitgeist of their particular subject matter, Future Shock! The Story of 2000Ad tells the story of the UK science-fiction comic that changed the face of the industry – a comprehensive overview of its history, a warts-and-all. A peek inside the creative process of its most famous creators, and a funny, moving and passionate chronicle of how a band of talented eccentrics assembled to create a visionary and extraordinary comic that’s still a game-changer 36 years on.
First published in 1977, 2000Ad was violent, anti-authoritarian, blackly funny and above all, idiosyncratically British… and was – at its birth – seen as a dangerous, anarchic and totally anti-establishment. This past Saturday I participated in the Women’s March in NYC. While I marched with a group of burlesque performers and friends, other columnists here at ComicMix participated including Molly Jackson and Martha Thomases. It was an important moment of demonstration for the first days of the new administration here, and I’m glad I participated. For all of those reading who want to do something and were unable to attend I can assure you there will be plenty more opportunities to come.
Meanwhile, in my free time I’ve been reading some of the DC Comics Elseworlds. For those of you unfamiliar, these were stories that took place outside of DC Comics continuity that often involve alternate histories of what could have been. As you can imagine, that premise is really intriguing to me lately.
I’ve read four Elseworlds in the past couple of weeks, all of which were ones starring Superman.

For some of us, the 1990s was a certain kind of Golden Age of Comics. The success of Image Comics meant that creators were given a lot of freedom to do what they liked, with deep-pocketed corporations competing to see who could throw the most money at the talent. It was in this environment that DC launched the Vertigo imprint, and eventually set up a satellite office in London.
Art Young was in charge, fresh from a brief stint at Touchmark, Disney’s pre-Marvel attempt at the Direct Market. The only other person on staff was Tim Pilcher. Together, they published a slew of books (including most of the books originally commissioned for Touchmark) and generally made comics seem even cooler.
I only met Tim Pilcher a few times, although we talked on the phone fairly often. He always struck me as a delight, quick and funny and smart – although it should be noted that,...

Little over a month ago, the Internet was sent into a tail-spin when news emerged that both Channing Tatum and pop icon Elton John were in contention for roles in Matthew Vaughn’s actioner, Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
With production now underway on Fox’s sequel, set photos emerged earlier this week that revealed a sharp-suited Tatum and now, completing that one-two punch, Elton John has taken to Instagram to confirm his casting in Vaughn’s hotly-anticipated romp.

So it turns out that I maybe I do have a Tardis, because I was able to finish watching Jessica Jones and to catch up on Supergirl.
You remember that basically crappy review of Supergirl I gave a couple of months ago? Well, the show is getting there, though, im-not-so-ho, they aren’t taking advantage of what could be some great story arcs. Except for Alex Danvers. And Cat Grant. And Hank Henshaw. But more on that in a bit.
I watched “Strange Visitor From Another Planet,” an hour that really could have called “Why Did You Abandon Me?” Hank Henshaw, a.k.a. J’onn J’onzz the Martian Manhunter, struggled with the personification of survivor’s guilt and abandonment in the appearance of a “White Martian,” a member of the “other” Martian race responsible for the Martian holocaust – a literal “Strange Visitor.” And while the psychological voices from...

A quick review of tonight's Supergirl coming up just as soon as I give you a case of Dr. Pepper and access to your Netflix account... "For the Girl Who Has Everything" had a high bar to clear for the comics fans in the Supergirl audience, since it was adapting arguably the greatest Superman story ever written, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' "For the Man Who Has Everything," where it's Kal-El, not Kara, who falls victim to the Black Mercy and gets trapped in dreams of a life on Krypton(*). But while the episode had its moments, it suffered from the Berlanti-verse tendency to try to do too many things all at once, and as a result rushed through so much of what made the original story so powerful. (*) It also features Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman (who shares a surprisingly passionate birthday kiss with the Man of Steel), and the villain Mongul,...

Join us for a rundown of all the biggest comics stories from the past seven days:
The trouble with Wonder Woman
Superstar comics writer Grant Morrison had some criticisms of Zack Snyder's take on Wonder Woman for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, telling Nerdist that Gal Gadot's portrayal is "not what [Wonder Woman creator] William Marston wanted" for the superhero.
"His original concept for Wonder Woman was an answer to comics that he thought were filled with images of blood-curdling masculinity, and you see the latest shots of Gal Gadot in the costume, and it's all sword and shield and her snarling at the camera," he added. "Marston's Diana was a doctor, a healer, a scientist."
Morrison will be offering his own take on the Amazon princess in Wonder Woman: Earth One, a story that he says won't feature any fighting at all (as well as an Invisible Plane shaped like a vagina,...

Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman, Pat Mills and John Wagner are amongst the talking heads in the first full documentary about the mighty 2000Ad.
It feels surprising that no one has attempted to chart the history of 2000Ad in a documentary before, given its legacy, but with its current upward trajectory and the devotion that it inspires (especially in the wake of the critically acclaimed but commercially melancholy film of Judge Dredd) it’s probably the best time to make a feature with a positive outlook.
Future Shock! is the work of Paul Goodwin, whose main task appears to have been assembling a wealth of talent to interview. With the exception of Alan Moore, Mark Millar and Garth Ennis, the big names are all present, which means you get to see Neil Gaiman sitting in front of an apparently colour coded bookcase, Bryan Talbot enthusiastically miming someone being impaled on a sword,...

If you're looking at Kingsman: The Secret Service strictly as a critic you're going to walk away with complaints. It's too long, too much CGI, doesn't really amount to much, etc. However, if you can put your critical goggles aside and look at it purely as a piece of entertainment, you'll find a lot to enjoy in what amounts to a comic lover's take on James Bond, made for an Add audience. Of course, I have to mention at the outset, the completely unnecessary anal sex joke at the end of the film, which actually betrays the character and the kind of movie this is, but I guess director and co-writer Matthew Vaughn felt he needed at least one bit of adolescent potty humor of which the rest of the film manages to avoid. The movie itself is a comic book adaptation from the writers of "Kick Ass", Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons,...

Those more devoted to the genre can debate whether Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman is the best comic-book movie of the last few years. What's beyond argument, however, is that Vaughn has whipped up the most interesting one, the only to make ferocious, unsettling art out of the great contradiction of superheroic fantasy: jolly do-goodism and its brutalizing sadism.
Vaughn's violence here is more florid, ingenious, and giddily amoral than the provocations of Kick-Ass, his 2010 adaption of a comic co-created by Mark Millar, the troublemaking Scottish co-author, with artist Dave Gibbons, of the Kingsman comic series. Kingsman's opening plays like British Sniper meets The Lego Movie: A pair of Taliban in the Afghan desert suffer rah-rah head...

Director Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service) has made his latest literary acquisition under his Marv Films banner, in the form of Ghostgirl. So on Monday, I watched the Gotham series premiere with about 8 million of my friends. I started writing a column about the show and what it says (accidentally and/or purposefully) about the role of Batman in pop culture right now. But working on that column got me thinking more generally about Batman: A character who has been around for 75 years, a figure in my cultural consciousness since before my memory begins. The next thing I knew, I was making a list of my favorite Batman things–the movies, the TV shows, the vividly recalled comic book story arcs and standalone issues,...

From the X-Men: First Class/Kick-Ass team comes the film of Dave Gibbons' & Mark Millar's Kingsman: The Secret Service. Here's the trailer.
If the original plan had stayed in tact, we'd be weeks away from seeing Kingsman: The Secret Service. 20th Century Fox has since put the movie back to February 13th 2015 - it's to do battle with Fifty Shades Of Grey - yet as this new trailer demonstrates, there's a lot to look forward to here.
Colin Firth, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Caine lead the grown-ups, in a film that tells the story of how a top secret spy organisation recruits a raw street kid to basically be the next James Bond. Matthew Vaughn - of Kick-Ass, Stardust and X-Men: First Class vintage - is directing, with Jane Goldman on scripting duties with him (adapting the comic book work of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons). A trailer has been released for Future Shock! The Story of 2000 Ad.
Director Paul Goodwin's documentary charts the history of the long-running UK anthology.
Watch the trailer below (Warning: Contains explicit language):
The trailer features interviewees including Pat Mills, legendary Vertigo editor Karen Berger, Neil Gaiman, Dave Gibbons and Grant Morrison.
"2000 Ad is the comic that people don't know they like," said Goodwin.
"Its pop cultural influence is massive - it's been referenced, homaged and outright ripped off in everything from other comics to films to television to music - and yet too many people are unaware of it.
"So many of us owe a debt to 2000 Ad - both as fans and creators - and Future Shock! is our attempt to acknowledge that."
Future Shock! The Story of 2000 Ad is yet to announce its release details.

Free Comic Book Day is upon us once again. What is Free Comic Book Day? Well it is all right there in the name. Every year, on the first Saturday of May, participating comic book stores give away selected comics to anyone that comes to their store. That’s right Free.
Comic books influence so much pop culture these days. Movies, TV, video games and more are looking for the next story to adapt or character to exploit. They make billions doing it. We enjoy consuming it. But the problem is, this doesn’t really help the men and women (mom & pop if you will) that run the local comic shop in your neighborhood. They struggle to get by. This is what makes Fcbd great, you get something for free and they get a chance to show you their wares. Maybe you will come back again. Everyone wins.

(Cbr) Even though footage from "Secret Service" previously screened at CinemaCon earlier this year, a second showing at WonderCon did not disappoint. Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons' comic centers on a team of covert agents, operating to save the world much like Mi-6 and the CIA do – minus the red tape. And with a lot more face busting. The clip opened with team leader Uncle Jack (Colin Firth) nursing a pint in a UK pub opposite new recruit Gary, played by newcomer Taron Egerton. After exchanging expository dialogue, the drinks are interrupted by a group of hooligans wanting to pick a fight with Gary. Cue Uncle Jack locking up the bar moments before beating the hell out of these guys, with an umbrella. The most inventive use of the umbrella comes at the end of the fight, as Jack deploys it as a...

As we spend a month looking at the great Stanley Kubrick, we can also look at the filmmakers who were clearly influenced by Kubrick. “Kubrickian” films tend to exercise incredible control of the camera, are extremely ambitious, tend to deal with much weightier themes, and always maintain a sense of mystery, like a there’s an invisible fog always hovering over the film. This list could be sharply focused on about five directors working today but, though a number of these filmmakers appear in this list of 40, we’re spreading the wealth a bit. Let’s get to it.
40. Watchmen (2009)
Directed by Zack Snyder
What makes it Kubrickian? It’s surprisingly cold and detail-oriented, unlike most of Zack Snyder’s other work (well, detail-oriented in a positive way). Watchmen is based on the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name by David Gibbons and Alan Moore, about a desolate alternative...

Mark Millar gained critical acclaim at Marvel and DC for his work on titles like Superman: Red Son, The Ultimates and Civil War. The comic book writer has since embarked on a number of equally praised creator owned projects, many of which have been adapted to the big screen. These include Kick-Ass, Wanted and Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming take on Millar and Watchmen artist Dave Gibbon’s The Secret Service.
The comic book tells the story of a James Bond-like spy who recruits his rough around the edges nephew to battle a mysterious villain responsible for kidnapping a number of public figures, including Star Wars legend Mark Hamill. The movie has assembled an impressive cast which includes Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine and relative newcomer Taron Egerton.

Dan Goldman’s cult favorite webcomic Red Light Properties is about to make its long awaited print debut. Re-edited, re-lettered, re-colored, and re-scripted, the first-ever print edition of Red Light Properties will be available as a trade paperback from Idw Publishing in late January, 2014.
The book includes more than 20 never-before-seen pages and is designed to be the definitive reading experience, the first of an ongoing series of Red Light Properties releases from Idw.
The critically-acclaimed Red Light Properties presents the adventures of an ambitious Miami real estate agency with a very specific business model. The husband-and-wife-run agency unearths properties that are unsellable because they’re haunted. The husband then cleans out said haunted homes by whatever (often unsavory) means necessary. The ghosts find closure. The seller unloads their property. The Rlp Agency receives a fee. Everyone wins… except maybe for the Tobins, who are barely on speaking terms. You see,...

It's Villains Month for DC Comics and they've taken over every title from Detective Comics to Aquaman and beyond! What better way to celebrate than to release a graphic novel featuring all the origins of the most infamous criminals to go up against Batman, Superman, The Flash, Shazam, and all our other favorite super heroes. Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics serves as a companion to the full-length documentary DVD of the same name.
Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics is comprised of 26 origin tales and stories featuring Bane, Ra's al Ghul, Zod, Sinestro, Black Adam, Lex Luthor, Reverse-Flash, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Black Manta, and many more. Each of them highlights a major event in the DC Universe and gives a breakdown of the villain's essential storylines and powers and weapons. If memory serves me well, these two-page introductions to each criminal were featured on DC's website at one point.

Matthew Vaughn likes to find relative newcomers when adapting Mark Millar’s work. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and especially Chloe Grace Moretz are much better known since working with him, and he has already selected Taron Egerton for The Secret Service. Another far-from-household name has just won the female lead in the new movie, with Sophie Cookson signing on.Cookson and Egerton are starring alongside established stars Colin Firth, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Caine in the film written by Vaughn and regular script collaborator Jane Goldman.Created by Millar and Dave Gibbons, The Secret Service sees an old-school Bond type (Firth) taking his street-smart nephew (Egerton) under his wing to train him in the family business. First mission: foiling a celebrity kidnap. Caine will be Firth’s spymaster and it appears Jackson is the villain.Though Vaughn had apparently has his eye on the likes of Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote for the role,...

Many fans were shocked when Matthew Vaughn chose little known actor Taron Egerton to play the lead character in The Secret Service, choosing him over several other far better known candidates. Well, he done the same again as British actress Sophie Cookson has landed the female lead in the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons series. While the director had considered Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote, he ultimately chose an actress who he believes was a better fit for the part. Cookson's only major acting credit was starring alongside Ray Winstone and Aneuirin Bernard in Sky's drama Moonfleet. She joins a cast which includes Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine.
