Bruce Campbell is no stranger to dealing with the supernatural, so it’s no surprise that Variety has reported that he’s joined the cast of Hysteria!, Peacock’s satanic panic series.
Per the official description, “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.” Sounds… interesting. Bruce Campbell will play Chief Dandridge in Hysteria!, who is described as “a small-town police chief whose understanding of his community is put to the test after a disturbing series of murders, disappearances, and unexplained phenomena.”

The Deadites are back, baby! Evil Dead Rise is now playing in theaters and ready to scare the pants off you. Arriving a decade after the last movie, the newest installment of the franchise has already gotten off to a great start after snagging $2.5 million in Thursday night preview screenings at the domestic box office.
“A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment,” reads the official synopsis. “The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.” Written and directed by Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland as the two estranged sisters,...

Sometimes, dead is better, especially at the box office. The latest chapter of the Evil Dead franchise, Evil Dead Rise, rose to $2.5M in Thursday preview screenings at the domestic box office. While it’s a groovy start for a horror film, it’s important to remember the weekend is just beginning, and theatergoers love a good scare. Friday crowds will likely fill seats for the Lee Cronin-directed horror film, with young adults and mature audiences making up most of the ticket sales.
As promising as Evil Dead Rise looks, The Super Mario Bros. Movie could level up again at the box office with $45 million to $50 million in its third weekend. The Super-Mushroom-powered animated film has already made $724 million worldwide and is well on its way to making $1 billion in gold coins. In addition to making money at the box office, Illumination’s Super Mario movie has a knock-on effect regarding video game sales.

Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) is in theatres this weekend – and Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert are already looking forward to producing more entries in the series. In fact, during an interview with Av Club, Campbell revealed that they’re hoping to boost this franchise in a major way, making a new sequel every two or three years!
Campbell said, “It’s all about the books now. It has nothing to do with (franchise hero Ash) or any particular character. In Army of Darkness, we first saw three books. So we know there are three out there, and none of them are any good. It’s about: where does that darn book wind up, who gets it, and what happens? But the universe is the same. It’s about innocent people with no special skills having to fight for their very lives.

Releasing in theaters this weekend, fifth franchise installment Evil Dead Rise opens up the saga beyond the cabin and beyond any characters we’re familiar with, introducing a brand new storyline centered around a brand new Book of the Dead. It would seem the possibilities with the franchise are limitless, and the idea well isn’t running dry in the least.
So what’s next from the Evil Dead saga, beyond Evil Dead Rise? Speaking with Av Club this week, producer Bruce Campbell teases More movies in the Near future!
“It’s all about the books now,” Campbell tells the outlet. “It has nothing to do with Ash or any particular character. In Army of Darkness, we first saw three books. This Friday, "Evil Dead Rise" will revitalize Sam Raimi's classic horror franchise once again in a way that's familiar but completely fresh. Though the new entry trades in teenagers in mysterious cabins in the woods for a troubled family living in a high rise apartment, it maintains all the geysers of blood, gore, chainsaws, and dark humor that the series is known for. Just as Fede Álvarez did with his 2013 reboot, director Lee Cronin is taking Raimi's world back to its nastier roots by returning to the nihilistic, oppressive atmosphere that made the original 1981 "The Evil Dead" a midnight movie sensation.
After making great impressions with preview test audiences, Cronin's movie went from being an HBO Max exclusive to receiving a wide theatrical release. The hype for "Evil Dead Rise" is truly real, but when you see it this weekend, don't expect our beloved horror-himbo Ash Williams to make an appearance.

Monte Carlo, April 12 (Ians) Novak Djokovic made a winning return to action as he fought his way into the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Russian qualifier Ivan Gakhov.
It was Djokovic’s first tournament in over a month as he was forced to miss the Sunshine swing — Indian Wells and Miami Open — both Atp 1000 masters events, after he was denied entry to the United States over his vaccination status.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, the World No. 1 faced a spirited challenge from World No. 198 Gakhov and was in danger of losing the opening set. But Djokovic navigated the big moments well to seal the win.
“It was probably, if you can call it this way, an ugly tennis win for me today,” Djokovic said in his on-court interview. “I haven’t played my best, particularly in the first set.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic faced unexpected turbulence in his second-round match at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Ultimately, the Serb triumphed over World No. 198 Ivan Gakhov in a hard-fought 7-6(5), 6-2 victory. Despite less-than-stellar conditions and a challenging opponent, Djokovic demonstrated his ability to win also matches that aren't going well for him.
In the opening set, Djokovic was far from his usual dominant self, struggling to find his rhythm amidst swirling winds and a highly motivated Gakhov. The young Russian player pushed Djokovic to the brink of losing the first set.
The 34-time Masters 1000 champion, however, drew upon his wealth of experience to navigate the critical moments, ultimately securing the opening set in a tense tiebreak. Addressing his performance in the post-match interview, Djokovic admitted:

When he began working on his latest documentary, “The Last Seagull,” acclaimed Bulgarian filmmaker Tonislav Hristov (“The Good Postman”) set himself a seemingly simple task: to follow the last of the dying breed of male escorts who, since the communist era, have spent their summers seducing foreign women in resort towns along the Black Sea.
That plan went astray, however, when real-world events intervened: first the coronavirus pandemic, which grounded flights and shuttered the very resorts where those escorts plied their trade; then the war in Ukraine, which impacted “The Last Seagull” in unexpected ways.
“This is what’s nice, but also scary, about documentaries,” Hristov told Variety after the film’s world premiere at the Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival. “You never know what’s going to happen next.”
“The Last Seagull” is the director’s eighth documentary feature, following films such as Sundance and Berlinale selection “The Magic Life...

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the directors of this weekend’s dinosaur thriller 65, and the film’s producer Sam Raimi recently sat down to answer fan questions during a Reddit Ama session, and some interesting information came out of that series of Qs and As. For example, Beck and Woods revealed that a sequel to their 2019 slasher Haunt is in the works, and Raimi mentioned that members of his Ghost House Pictures production team are trying to come up with a story for a sequel to his 2009 film Drag Me to Hell. During the session, Raimi also named his personal favorite Sam Raimi movie – and let fans know he has a couple options to choose from when the time comes for him to direct his next movie.
When asked “Of all the films that you’ve made, which one would you consider to be your personal favorite?”, Raimi answered, “My...

Ahead of the European premiere of his psychologically disturbing supernatural thriller, Consecration, at FrightFest Glasgow 2023, director Chris Smith talks about the supernatural side of religion, filming in Scotland, and his encounter with a pregnant sheep.
Chris Smith directing Consecration
Another FrightFest, another Chris Smith movie! Our destinies seem intertwined. Why has FrightFest always been a key component to your release strategy?
I feel very fortunate to have been brought into the FrightFest family. I was very lucky that my first film, Creep, was included and then I got very lucky with the dates of release of my subsequent films. Severance was shown the night before the festival started in 2006 and then of course there was the spectacular Premier for Triangle at the Empire Leicester Square. FrightFest has also shown Black Death and Detour. They didn’t bother with Get Santa but that’s their loss. FrightFest is the best audience for any director.

This post contains spoilers for "Creed III"
The underdog story is a classic cinematic trope for a reason. We follow our heroes from humble beginnings with few believing in them, but through grit and determination, they become self-made champions. It's the American dream personified on the big screen. Few franchises have offered consistent stand-up-and-cheer moments more than "Rocky." The Italian Stallion hadn't seen the ring since 2006's "Rocky Balboa." Then, director Ryan Coogler, star Michael B. Jordan, and Stallone found a way to breathe new life into the franchise. In a world of spinoffs, reboots, and retreads, it's rare to get one that works as well as the first "Creed." The film comes out swinging with the franchise's most realistic fights, a dynamic relationship between Adonis and Rocky, and several moments that make grown men ugly cry (or at least this grown man).
Each movie has defined the central conflict...
