Trevor Koverko
- Director
Trevor Koverko is a former professional hockey player who is a founder and investor in a an array of leading-edge cryptocurrency companies, including Polymath, whose "security token" innovations have contributed to the popularity of Decentralized Finance (DeFi) transactions on the blockchain.
If not for a serious vehicle accident in 2011, Trevor Koverko might still be playing professional hockey for the New York Rangers. The Toronto native was a 2005 draft pick for the franchise, fulfilling his lifelong dream to play at the pro level.
But the accident led to months of rehabilitation, years of disability and forced Trevor to find a new way forward in his career and in his life.
In 2011, Koverko bought his first bitcoin on eBay, for $20. Suddenly, he was hooked on the exciting new world of cryptocurrency, which was evolving rapidly based on dramatic advances in emerging Technologies.
He later described this epiphany in an interview: "I was excited about bitcoins' potential as 'programmable money.' It could do what legacy currency couldn't do. It was free, apolitical, and had a mysterious founder who to this day has not been identified. ... Before I knew it, I was falling down the crypto rabbit hole." By 2012 Trevor Koverko was deep into this exciting new sphere of digital, democratic Currency.
Once he was well enough to walk, Trevor traveled to China, Silicon Valley and Wall Street, learning from and sharing ideas with pioneers in technology, finance and digital commerce. He also enrolled in Ivey Business School at Western University, graduating with an MBA.
With his founding of Polymath in 2017, the crypto world began to take notice of a new player in the rink. Polymath's new angle on security tokens was revolutionary. Suddenly safe, secure trading of securities on the blockchain was not just an option, but often the best choice.
Because security tokens are backed by tangible assets, they essentially bridge the gap between crypto and traditional securities and host a number of features that investors find appealing, such as constant liquidity, instant settlements, and compliance with global securities laws. Transfers are limited to verified users. The tokens exist on the blockchain and provide instant liquidity to power financial and security transactions worldwide. Trevor Koverko's influence extends far beyond security tokens and Polymath. He has been a founder or key angel investor in a number of successful start-ups, including Matador Gold Technologies, Tokens.com, FirstCarbon, Layer 2 Ventures, ShapeShift, eProf, Skyline Capital, and Digital Assets International. His Oculus Rift-based project became one of the world's first VR exits.
In his free time, Trevor enjoys jiu jitsu, chess and is a proud sponsor of a range of charitable organizations, including The Africa Inland Mission, Brynn Children Home of India and Capes For Kids.
