The tie-up is a non-exclusive pact that will see Virgin Produced have the option to co-finance, co-produce and co-market a sequel to Columbia’s dystopian sci-fi pic with Will Smith and James Lassiter’s Overbrook. That’s of course if a sequel is warranted after the pic’s May 31 release. The deal means Virgin will also support the upcoming tentpole starring Smith and his son Jaden Smith and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, with those initiatives to be announced soon. The companies said that going forward they will look to develop film and TV properties together, in which Virgin Produced would co-produce and market across its expansive global platforms. In After Earth, a crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.

"V for Vendetta" and "Ninja Assassin" director James McTeigue is in negotiations to direct "Ness/Capone" for Relativity Media says Deadline.
Grant Pierce Myers penned the Black List script which puts a new spin on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era 1920s. Far less black-and-white than "The Untouchables", this version has Ness as a young skirt-chasing publicity hound who gets off on the danger of the job.
He would parade confiscated bootleg trucks past Al Capone’s hotel, calling Capone in advance to suggest he look out the window. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Gianni Nunnari, Jason Felts and Rene Rigal are producing.
McTeigue just completed the John Cusack-led "The Raven" for Relativity, while he's currently casting his next feature "Message From the King" about an enigmatic outsider who comes to L.A. to investigate the sudden disappearance of his sister.

James McTeigue has found a new directing gig wrapping The Raven with John Cusack. Deadline reports that McTeigue is finalizing a deal to direct Ness/Capone based on a script by Grant Pierce Myers. The story will reportedly put "a new spin on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era 1920s." The project was bought by Relativity in April. McTeigue will next direct Message From the King, but he is in talks to take on this film after that. The project is being produced by Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Gianni Nunnari, Jason Felts and Rene Rigal.

Relativity Media has finally found a futuristic drama that they could love. The studio optioned for “Ecstasia,” the science-fiction drama was written and to be directed by Wayne Kramer. Kramer directed several films including “Crossing Over,” “Running Scared” and “The Cooler.” According to Deadline, “Ecstasia” is set in an alternative universe, in which love no long exists except through costly artificial simulations. The procedure involves computer chips implanted into each couple, but it is incredibly very expensive. If a couple cannot afford to maintain the payments, then they are forced into “dissolution” to remove the emotional link. The main story will involve a man and a woman who are 10 days from losing their commitment and trying to refinance to keep their love. The film will be produced by Jason Felts (“Limitless,” “Romance & Cigarettes”), Rene Rigal (“Nothing Like the Holidays,” “Fish in a Barrel”), Ryan Kavanaugh (“Zombieland,” “The Fighter”), Tucker Tooley (“The Fighter,...

Relativity Media has purchased the rights to the futuristic drama Ecstasia, that was written and will be directed by Wayne Kramer (The Cooler). Now that Kramer has left Headshot starring Sylvester Stallone, he expects this to be his next project.
Deadline reports the drama "occurs in a time when love no longer exists, except when it is artificially stimulated through a costly procedure called “commitment.” Ecstasia is an emotional Viagra that comes from a implanted computer chip. It is incredibly expensive to maintain, and without it, couples can no longer maintain feelings for one another." The story revolves "around a man and woman who turn to desperate measures when they can no longer afford the costs of “commitment.” Jason Felts, Rene Rigal, Ryan Kavanaugh, Tucker Tooley, Matt Rhodes and Renee Tab are producing the film.
I loved The Cooler, and look forward to learning more about this project. What are your thoughts on this news?...

Exclusive: Relativity Media has optioned Ecstasia, a futuristic drama that was written and will be directed by The Cooler helmer Wayne Kramer. Kramer became available after he exited the Sylvester Stallone-starrer Headshot, and he expects this to be his next film. It came to Relativity through its relationship with Richard Branson’s film label, Virgin Produced. Relativity Media has picked up Grant Pierce Myers' script "Ness/Capone" which is a new take on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era reports Deadline.
Myers' version of Eliot Ness is very different to that of Kevin Costner's incorruptible good guy portrayal in Brian De Palma's "The Untouchables". In this take, Ness is a skirt-chasing 26-year old publicity hound who got off on courting danger and tackling the mobsters on their own turf, even parading his victories right in front of Capone himself.
The film is not to be confused with the Walon Green-scripted "Cicero" at Warner Bros. Pictures. That project details Capone's rise from the slums of Brooklyn to the head of the criminal underworld in Chicago
Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Gianni Nunnari, Jason Felts and Rene Rigal will produce "Ness/Capone".

Exclusive: At a time when organized crime films are back in vogue, Relativity Media's Ryan Kavanaugh is wetting his beak. He's acquired Ness/Capone, a Grant Pierce Myers script that made the 2010 Black Script and puts a new spin on the epic battle between Eliot Ness and Al Capone during the Prohibition Era 1920s. That battle was famously chronicled in the Brian DePalma-directed movie based on the TV series The Untouchables. Myers went back to the history books and came away with a much different version of Ness. While Kevin Costner played him as an incorruptible married choirboy who had to be taught to meet the mob on its own crooked terms, Ness/Capone's Ness is a skirt-chasing 26-year old publicity hound who seemed to get an adrenaline charge out of courting danger, kicking in doors, smashing moonshine stores and rubbing it in the noses of Capone and other mobsters.

As Malcolm in the Middle's prank-prone bully Reese, Justin Berfield seemed more likely to wind up in jail than in the upper echelons of the movie industry. But the 24-year-old actor just might be poised to become the next movie mogul—with a little help from Virgin Group's renegade entrepreneur, Richard Branson. Branson announced the launch his Virgin Produced film and television development company on Friday, a joint venture with Relativity Media's Rogue Pictures. Berfield (pictured at right) will serve as the new venture's Chief Creative Officer, overseeing the development team. Longtime friend and producing partner Jason Felts will serve as CEO. Virgin...

Richard Branson's Virgin Group announced that it launched Virgin Produced, a joint venture with Relativity Media for TV development, packaging and production. What the company didn't say is that it chose as its chief creative officer and overseer of development the most diabolical of the menacing siblings from Malcolm in the Middle. Justin Berfield, who has grown up and transitioned from actor to producer with J2 partner Jason Felts, has taken that post for Branson. Felts is CEO, and they will make product to be distributed through the Rogue label. Berfield isn't the only former kid actor I've come across recently who has transitioned to adulthood behind the camera. Another is Peter Billingsley, who directed the Universal comedy Couples Retreat, you have to look close to see signs of his childhood identity, as the kid who nearly shot his eye out with a Bb gun in The Christmas Story.

Variety is reporting that Halle Berry will star in the upcoming film, Who is Doris Payne?
Halle Berry
The film, about a stylish jewel thief whose career lasted 50 years, will be written and produced by Eunetta T. Boone (Living Single, One on One), and the project is being developed by Justin Berfield (who played Reese on Malcolm in the Middle) and Jason Felts (Blonde Ambition).
So now you may be asking yourself, who is Doris Payne?
Payne is a coal miner's daughter from Slab Fork, West Virginia who realized at an early age that the rude indifference of white shopkeepers could work in her favor.
The L.A. Times reports that Payne stole her first diamond at the age of 27, "hoping to raise money to help her mother leave an abusive husband." Her attractive, stylish demeanor was a distraction that made her "career" possible.

The title is Who is Doris Payne? and it's a "fact-based film" reports Variety. I read these two facts and was thinking, great, another biopic about an anonymous person who suffered tragically. Then I read a bit further and we're talking about a film about an international jewel thief whose career spanned five decades with Halle Berry in the lead role. Okay, you've got my attention. TV scripted Eunetta Boone penned the script. Her creamy, mocha skin was made up just so, her handbag always designer. Sometimes a pair of plain gold earrings would do. Always, she looked immaculate, well-to-do. It was a lonely job.
