He was an American musicologist who helped to bring many neglected works of Haydn back to the active repertoire. He was a founder of the Haydn Society in Boston in 1949. The society produced recordings of previously-unrecorded Haydn symphonies, as well as the first recordings of Mozart's "Idomeneo" and Mass in C minor.
