Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) said that the FBI is investigating a possible hacking of his phone by someone impersonating Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
“My phone is in the hands of the FBI now,” Graham said. “I got a message, I think, from Schumer, but it wasn’t from Schumer. The next thing you know, my phone’s… I don’t know what. Anything you can create, apparently, can be hacked.”
The Senate Sergeant At Arms, who manages cybersecurity for the chamber, delivered an advisory warning to Senate offices regarding the phishing scheme effort.
“The Sergeant At Arms is investigating a possible hack of Sen. Graham’s phone,” Taylor Reidy, a spokesperson for the South Carolina senator, stated.
Schumer is famous for using a flip phone and preferring calling over texting. Similar hacking attempts were reported on other Senate staff last week.

The Senate has voted to dismiss the primary articles of impeachment leveled against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Senators voted to dismiss the charges against Mayorkas after just a few hours of contentious procedural discussion on the Senate floor, rebuking GOP efforts to make an immigration scapegoat of the secretary despite their own repeated obstruction of legislation aimed at quelling undocumented immigration at the southern border.
In a historic vote, the Senate voted 51-49 to dismiss the first article against Mayrokas, accusing him of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law.

Marjorie Taylor Greene has gained an ally in her crusade to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson from his position as head of the Republican caucus. On Tuesday, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) announced that he has signed on to co-sponsor Greene’s motion to vacate against Johnson.
“I just told Mike Johnson in conference that I’m cosponsoring the Motion to Vacate that was introduced by [Greene]. He should pre-announce his resignation (as Boehner did), so we can pick a new Speaker without ever being without a GOP Speaker,” Massie wrote on X.

Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) have endorsed a bill that would ban non-citizens from voting in federal elections — a thing that is already illegal.
If you haven’t already guessed, the legislation is a brazen stunt intended to gin up public support for a former president campaigning on an anti-immigration platform and a house speaker on the brink of being ousted by extremists in his caucus.

Update: Protesters interrupted President Joe Biden’s conversation with his predecessors, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, a signature feature of the blockbuster fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall.
The disruption isn’t all that surprising, given that many of Biden’s events have seen hecklers calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. This time, according to a pool report, one of the protesters was yelling obscenities about a nuclear war with Russia. Other protesters interrupted over the situation in Gaza.
When one protester interrupted, Obama snapped back, “You can’t just talk and not listen… That’s what the other side does.”
Stephen Colbert, moderating the conversation, first asked what was at stake in the election.
“I think our democracy is at stake, no joke,” Biden said, adding that if “we get by this election,’ then “we’re in a position where we can set the course for the next four or five,...

Major unions representing U.S. journalists, writers and other creative professionals are calling on Congress to make these workers’ needs a “core priority” in any upcoming artificial intelligence legislation.
Presidents of the Writers Guild of America East and West, The NewsGuild and the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians wrote to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-ny) on Wednesday, urging that Congress “recognize the human ingenuity and creativity essential to a free press, the media and entertainment industry, and our members’ livelihoods” in its work to regulate AI.
The unions collectively represent journalists across print, online media and broadcast, as well as film and television writers. “AI will never be a total replacement for the work of reporters, investigators, editors, podcasters, on-air anchors or film and television writers,” the letter continued.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and other unions representing film and TV writers and journalists sent a letter to Congress Thursday urging protections for their industries in any legislation regarding Artificial Intelligence.
Addressed to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the letter was co-signed by the NewsGuild-cwa, Writers Guild of America East (Wgae), Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw), and National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (Nabet-cwa).
“So far this year, our members have witnessed the impact of unregulated AI on their jobs,” the letter, obtained by Variety, states. “Major news media companies, including Gannett and G/O Media sites, deployed AI articles with fake bylines to replace the work of hardworking local and digital journalists and writers. Film and television writers won critical protections in their collective bargaining agreement, but their work continues to be used by AI developers without their consent.”
WGA was on strike from May 2-Sept.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Donald Trump for saying that any Jewish person voting for Democrats “hates their religion.”
Trump was recently asked on a podcast hosted by his former White House aide Sebastian Gorka, America First with Sebastian Gorka Podcast, about the criticism from the Biden administration and Schumer of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“I actually think they hate Israel,” he claimed. “I don’t think they hate him, I think they hate Israel. And the Democrat Party hates Israel.”
“Any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion,” he added. “They hate everything about Israel, and they should be ashamed of themselves because Israel will be destroyed.”
Trump slammed Schumer, who recently condemned Netanyahu’s government and demanded new elections in a speech on the Senate floor about Israel’s war on Hamas and the subsequent humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) bragged about her district in Georgia gaining $9.3 million in federal funds even though she voted against the passing of federal funding bills.
On March 11, two days after President Joe Biden signed six government spending bills into law, Greene sent out a press release describing the funding amount she “secured” in the measures for projects within her district.
Congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle worked to bring the package of six spending measures – called a minibus – to Biden’s desk during months of political wrangling. Another slate of funding bills passed on Friday preventing a government shutdown.
Greene immediately called for a “motion to vacate” to remove Johnson as House speaker.
The $460 billion package that had been passed includes funding for the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Justice, Veterans Affairs, Energy, Interior, Transportation and Housing and Urban Development.

On Friday, controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) filed a motion to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson has served as House Speaker since October 2023, when he took over for Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted on October 3, when eight House Republicans and all Democrats supported a motion by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) to remove him.
It was not instantly clear how the House would act on Greene’s motion, which requires only a majority vote to remove its Speaker.
She did not file the motion as a special bill – which would have a vote forced within two legislative days – but instead, as a regular motion, which could be referred to a committee, where it would likely be disregarded.
Greene said in a speech on the House floor that the GOP majority was “a failure.”
After filing the motion, Greene spoke to reporters.

It was a scatter-shot Real Time from Bill Maher on Friday night. During the course of his conversations, the blame game fell on just about everyone, from politicians to tech titans to those staging St. Patrick’s Day parades.
The night started with tech reporter Kara Swisher, host of the podcast On with Kara Swisher, co-host of the podcast Pivot, and author of the memoir Burn Book: A Tech Love Story.
Swisher’s dogged reporting has tech titans cringing, she claimed. “I think they’re scared a little bit,” and judging from her less-than-favorable comments on the likes of Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, they may have good reason.
She characterized that a lot of moguls are “hugely narcissistic,” and said the yes-men that surround them pump them to the point that, “You start t think of yourself as a god.”
Swisher was not willing to balance their good works with that attitude.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not take kindly to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-n.Y.) speech on the Senate floor last week where he called for Israel to hold elections once the current assault on Gaza winds down.
“What he said is totally inappropriate. It’s inappropriate to go to a sister democracy and try to replace the elected leadership there,” the Israeli prime minister said in an interview on CNN’s State of the Union that aired Sunday.
“That’s for the Israeli people to decide. I think it’s ridiculous.

Steven Mnuchin, the former treasury secretary and film financier, says that he’s getting an investor group together to try to buy TikTok.
His comments to CNBC follow the House of Representatives’ overwhelming passage of a bill that would force TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the popular app or face a ban on distribution in the United States.
“I think it should be sold. I understand the technology. It’s a great business, and I’m going to put together a group to buy TikTok,” Mnuchin told CNBC’s Squawk Box today. He did not indicate which investors would be involved in an effort to buy the app, but he said that “it would be a combination of investors. It would be no one investor that controlled this.”
The bill cleared the House on Wednesday 352-65, drawing rare bipartisan support from leaders and rank and file members of both parties.

House lawmakers overwhelmingly passed legislation today that would force the parent company of TikTok to divest the popular app or face a ban on U.S. platforms.
The legislation passed 352-65, easily clearing the 2/3 threshold needed.
The bill now goes to the Senate, where no timetable is set for considering the legislation.
“The Senate will review the legislation when it comes over from the House,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-ny) said in a statement.
But the bill gained two key supporters, Sen. Mark Warner (D-va) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-fl), the chair and ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who have previously sought measures to restrict the effort.
Under the legislation, ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, would be forced to sell the social media platform within about five months or face having it banned on app stores or web hosting services. The bill, called the Protecting...

Right-wing Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) defended his opposition to a bill to provide additional aid to Ukraine. Johnson seemed to agree with points Russian Presiden Vladimir Putin made in his controversial interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
In an appearance on Real America’s Voice, a conservative news network, Johnson emphasized, “Our policy should be focused on how do we bring Vladimir Putin to the table.” He expressed reservations about the effectiveness of certain sanctions and stated that they may inadvertently diminish the value of American currency as Russia explores alternative trading options. He said, “We’re cutting off our nose to spite our face with some of these sanctions.”
Johnson continued, “A lot of the points that Vladimir Putin made are accurate. They’re obvious, and so many of our people here in Washington, D.C., are just ignoring that, making people believe like Ukraine can win.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was impeached by one vote in the House this evening, making him the first sitting cabinet member to face such a process of removal.
The vote was 214-213. House Republicans failed in their efforts last week to Mayorkas, largely over the way that he has handled the crisis at the southern border.

Mayorkas now faces a Senate trial, where he expected to survive given Democratic control.

It’s an election year, which means it’s once again time for Republicans to care about the border. The GOP has done all it can to raise hell over the issue — from holding government funding hostage over their extreme demands, to trying to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, to backing Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s legally dubious crusade against the federal government’s dominion over the border — while blocking efforts to bring about real change. Republicans in the House, for example, are refusing to back a bipartisan immigration deal.

Republicans have been hammering the Biden administration’s immigration policy since the moment he took office. In a post on X Thursday afternoon, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) disclosed that her two daughters were victims of swatting.
Swatting refers to the act of making false emergency claims that trigger an extensive response from law enforcement agencies, typically targeted at public figures’ residences.
Greene wrote, “Both my daughter’s houses just got swatted today. Big thanks to the police who responded! We appreciate you and support you!”
Greene added, “Whoever is doing this, you are going to get caught and it won’t be funny to you anymore,” before she tagged the FBI account.
This incident shortly follows Greene’s own swatting encounter.

Olympic gold medalist Klete Keller was sentenced for his involvement in the January 6 U.S. Capitol riot in 2021.
Keller has won five Olympic medals, two of which were gold for the relay team. He also won silver and two bronze medals.
On the day of the storming of the Capitol, Keller was wearing his Team USA jacket, but after the riot, he threw it in a trash can.
He was identified through a video recorded by Townhall reporter Julio Rosas.
In the video, Keller is seen with his back to police as they attempt to clear the Capitol Rotunda.
After the footage was released, many people recognized Keller at home since he stood out due to his height and Team USA jacket.
Investigators said they identified him using the footage from the video, his driver’s license.
He also cursed out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

After Broadway shut down due to the pandemic, “Waitress” received an arts grant from Chuck Schumer’s office that allowed the production to reopen in 2021. Sara Bareilles, who wrote the music and lyrics, said this opportunity inspired her and the team to make the most of their time back on stage by shooting a live recording.
Bleecker Street and Fathom Events will release “Waitress: The Musical” in theaters for a five-day series of nationwide special-event screenings, starting Dec. 7. Bareilles, who also plays the lead role of Jenna Hunterson in the film production, said shooting this live-capture helped bring the audience “closer to the emotionality of the performances.”
“The shift from just being in front of a live audience and then adding a camera is almost to just lean into the intimacy of it, to let each moment feel really truthful between two people or three people or whoever’s on stage,...

“Frankly, I’m exhausted,” SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher told Variety minutes after the union disclosed the ratification vote tally that sealed the deal on its hard-fought new three-year contract.
Drescher and Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s union’s national executive director and chief negotiator, took a moment to reflect Tuesday evening on the winding road that led the union to wage its first strike in more than 40 years, as well as the high-stakes negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and studio chiefs that produced the deal.
For nearly four months, SAG-AFTRA’s indefatigable duo were the face of the 118-day strike by the union’s 160,000 members. Despite a healthy debate during the ratification vote period over whether the protections achieved around AI were significant enough to protect actors in the future, Drescher and Crabtree-Ireland say the larger achievements of the contract are unequivocally game-changing for Hollywood.

Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”
The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.
It was also one of a few references to age throughout Sunday evening’s Kennedy Center Honors which, in addition to Crystal, honored opera singer Renée Fleming, hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah,...

Sen. Joe Manchin‘s daughter, Heather Bresch, set up a political organization just days after the Democratic West Virginia senator announced he would not run for re-election next year.
Manchin has been toying with a third-party presidential run either with No Labels or one of his own making. The organization, Americans Together, was established under federal election law as a 501(c)(4) group, which allows it to raise funds to support Manchin’s future political activities.
In a written and video statement last week, Manchin said, “After months of deliberation and long conversations with my family, I believe in my heart of hearts that I have accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia. I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for re-election to the United States Senate, but what I will be doing is traveling the...

When Oppenheimer filmmaker Christopher Nolan received the Federation of American Scientists’ Public Service Award earlier this month, in recognition of his cultural contribution by bringing J. Robert Oppenheimer’s story to broader attention through cinema, he made a “plea” to scientists.
At the heart of his speech was a dichotomy between the scientist and the artist, in terms of their relationship to, and dialogue with society at large. As a filmmaker, he explained, you’re given a certain license to manufacture meaning by making a “dramatic choice.” This happened for him on Oppenheimer when grappling with the ending of his story on the invention of the atomic bomb, which depending on his framing, could lean either toward hope for the future of the world, or toward despair. Truthfully, Nolan suggested, the full story of nuclear power continues to be written, well beyond the years his film covers, as geopolitical power...

The lineup of speakers at the March for Israel included Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Sen. It also included an evangelical Christian pastor from Texas, infamous for his fire-and-brimstone prophecies about the end of the world. “Israel, you are not alone,” John Hagee proclaimed in his San Antonio twang.

At a photo op with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Johnson was asked, “Are you running for president?” and “Do you plan to run for president?” But he did not answer.
Last week, Johnson said on Trevor Noah’s What Now? podcast, “At the end of the year . . . in 2022 I got a visit from the parties, asking me if I was going to run and if I could run,” Johnson said. “It was a big deal. And it came out of the blue. And it was one after the other.”

Despite the D.C. push to establish guardrails around artificial intelligence, major studios are warning against “inflexible” rules when it comes to copyright, asserting that existing law is sufficient to deal with the emerging AI technology.
The studios’ positions on a host of issues regarding AI were outlined in a Motion Picture Association filing with the U.S. Copyright Office. AI also is said to be a major point of contention in talks between the SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP.
In the filing (read it here), the MPA’s legal team, including Karyn Temple, Benjamin Sheffner and Terrica Carrington, wrote that the studio members’ “overarching view, based on the current state, is that while AI technologies raise a host of novel questions, those questions implicate well-established copyright law doctrines and principles. Update: President Joe Biden signed an executive order on AI, billing the U.S. as out front of other countries when it comes to establishing guardrails around the fast-emerging technology.
But Biden told those gathered in the East Room that other steps will require congressional action. That will be a much more complicated process, as lawmakers have been in a stalemate for years when it comes to any meaningful action on tech giants.
Speaking to reporters after the White House ceremony, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-ny) said that his effort to craft a bill. “This is about the hardest thing I have attempted to undertake legislatively because a) it is so complicated, and b) it affects every aspect of society.” Schumer said that he and the rest of a bipartisan group of lawmakers will meet with Biden on Tuesday to talk about the legislation.

Senate Legislation Would Outlaw Unauthorized AI-Generated Likenesses; SAG-AFTRA Lauds “No Fakes Act”
Four U.S. senators today announced a discussion draft bill aimed at protecting actors, singers and others from having their voice and likeness generated by artificial intelligence. The bipartisan Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep Entertainment Safe Act, or No Fakes Act (read it here), would hold people, companies and platforms liable for producing or hosting such digital replicas.
SAG-AFTRA applauded the announcement today, with President Fran Drescher saying: “A performer’s voice and their appearance are all part of their unique essence, and it’s not ok when those are used without their permission. Consent is key.”
The No Fakes Act would prevent a person from producing or distributing an unauthorized AI-generated replica of an individual to perform in an audiovisual or sound recording without the consent of the individual being replicated. The person creating or sharing the unauthorized replication would be liable for the damages caused by the AI-generated fake.
