Following the success of The Curse, Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder are again teaming with A24 to produce Checkmate, a movie based on the chess world’s biggest scandal.
Chess can be absorbing subject material for drama, whether it’s a glossy period piece such as Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, or more left-field takes like 2013’s Computer Chess. Perhaps chess movies are like Robin Hood projects: there are always several in development in Hollywood and it becomes a strategic game of, well… erm, chess to see who can put one together first.
The latest chess project is being produced by Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder, and A24 have reportedly spent a seven-figure sum to secure the rights to it. Why the buzz? Well, the film will be based on the biggest scandal the chess world has seen in recent years, dramatising the events of the ‘controversial 2022 head-to-head match between Grandmasters Magnus Carlsen,...

“Bafana the Boys,” which has already been acquired by South African streaming service eVOD and is currently being circled by global platforms, features interviews with legendary players from the championship squad, such as team captain Neil Tovey and star midfielder Doctor Khumalo. Barker is in talks with icons of the international game, including French players Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry — who scored his first international goal against South Africa — as well as coaching legends Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho.

Rome, Sep 2 (Ians) Olivier Giroud’s penalty and Rafael Leao’s stunner helped 10-man AC Milan beat Roma 2-1 away in a highly-anticipated Serie A fixture.
Milan managed two wins out of two in the new Serie A season while the capital-based team just picked up one point. Jose Mourinho returned to Roma’s sideline after a two-match ban while new signing Romelu Lukaku who joined from Chelsea on loan started the game from the bench, reports Xinhua.
The away side broke the deadlock just nine minutes into the game as Ruben Loftus-Cheek was tripped down by goalkeeper Rui Patricio in the box, the referee awarded them a penalty after a Var check, and Giroud kept his cool to convert it. It was the Frenchman’s third consecutive game on target.

Istanbul, June 9 (Ians) Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have some unfinished business to settle when they take on Inter Milan of Italy in the final of the 2022-23 edition of the UEFA Champions League here on Saturday.
City have never won the title in the history of the tournament and their best performance was finishing runner-up to fellow-English club Chelsea in the 2020-21 edition. Inter on the other hand have the title thrice and will be looking to reclaim it for the fourth time in the match to be played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey.
With their cash-rich owners from the Gulf region pumping in huge funds, City had roped in Guardiola, the former Barcelona boss, to win the Champions League in 2016. Guardiola has guided them to five domestic titles but failed to win the coveted Champions League.

London, April 25 (Ians) Tottenham has sacked their caretaker coach Cristian Stellini in the wake of their 6-1 humiliation to Newcastle United.
The Italian had only been in the role for a month after Antonio Conte left the club at the end of March, but the man, who had been Conte’s assistant at the club, has now gone the same way as his former boss.
Sunday saw Tottenham fall 5-0 down away to Newcastle after just 21 minutes, and the defeat leaves them six points adrift of the top-four and in danger of dropping out of the top-six, a Xinhua report said.
Former player Ryan Mason will now take charge until the end of the campaign, repeating the job he did in 2021 after Jose Mourinho was sacked.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy on Monday released a statement taking responsibility for Stellini’s appointment and subsequent sacking.
“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable.

London, April 4 (Ians) Manchester United’s 27-year-old England international left back Luke Shaw has signed a new contract with the club.
The new deal will keep Shaw at Old Trafford until the end of June 2027 and comes as a reward for a season where he has made 36 appearances for Erik ten Hag’s side, becoming a fixture in the starting 11, reports Xinhua.
Shaw joined Manchester United as a teenager from Southampton in 2014, becoming the most expensive left back in the world at the time, but he struggled to adapt and was publicly criticised by Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese manager’s time at Old Trafford.
He has since gone on to make 249 appearances for his club and 29 for England.
“Nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club, and I’m thrilled to be extending my stay,” said Shaw on the club website.

As Rafael Nadal continues to make strides in the world of tennis, his uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal, sheds light on the evolving dynamic of their relationship.
In a candid interview with Marca, Toni reveals that while the two still share a close bond, he no longer provides career guidance to the 22-time Grand Slam champion. Toni Nadal, who was instrumental in coaching his nephew to 16 Grand Slam titles between 1990 and 2017, believes that it is inappropriate for him to continue offering advice.
He draws a parallel to Jose Mourinho's departure from Real Madrid, suggesting that it would be akin to the former manager still commenting on the club's performance a decade after his departure. While the professional relationship between the Nadals has shifted, the family bond remains strong.
"We usually see each other a lot. Obviously it has changed because I am not in his day to day.

Madrid, March 17 (Ians) Spanish clubs Real Sociedad and Real Betis were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night, leaving Sevilla as the country’s only representative in the tournament.
Real Sociedad hurled everything at Roma to try to overturn their 2-0 defeat in Rome a week ago, but despite 19 shots in the match, they were unable to break down a defense typically well-organized by Jose Mourinho in a 0-0 draw in the Reale Arena.
Roma failed to register a single shot on target in the match, but they were able to defend their first-leg advantage relatively comfortably against a side that has lost steam in the last two months of the competition, a Xinhua report said.
Earlier, Manchester United continued on from their 4-1 first-leg win as they won 1-0 away to Betis thanks to Marcus Rashford’s rasping low shot.

Madrid (Spain), March 15 (Ians) Real Sociedad and Real Betis both face difficult tasks on Thursday if they want to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Europa League.
Both teams suffered away defeats in the first leg, with Real Sociedad losing 2-0 to Roma, while Betis were beaten 4-1 by Manchester United after a second half dominated by the Premier League side.
Real Sociedad are hoping for a sell-out crowd in their Reale Arena to take on the side coached by Jose Mourinho. Roma demonstrated in the first leg that they don’t need to control the ball, and in San Sebastian, they can be expected to try to defend with order and hurt Real Sociedad on the break and at set pieces, reports Xinhua.
La Real need to recover their form after a dip in performances in recent weeks after taking just seven points from their last seven league matches.

Anyone watching the new Itvx drama Litvinenko will hear something very strange. Something very unsettling indeed: David Tennant’s Russian accent.
In the show, Tennant is playing Alexander Litvinenko, the former Russian spy who claimed that his murder (via a poisoned green tea in a London hotel) was ordered by Vladimir Putin in 2006.
Litvinenko’s death sparked an investigation into a chemical attack in the UK capital and a 10-year investigation between Britain and Russia to find justice for his killing.
With this role, Tennant has joined the long list of actors we’ve seen playing international characters, while speaking English in various accents. For some reason, the creators of TV and film still don’t think viewers can get over the one-inch-tall barrier that is subtitles, as Parasite director Bong Joon-ho so perfectly put it.
But if Jared Leto’s Italian accent in House of Gucci wasn’t surreal enough,...

Charlize Theron has reflected on a “belittling” experience with a director who apparently wanted her to dress more “f***able”.
The Mad Max: Fury Road star opened up about “having absolutely no control” over her choice of clothes in a new interview.
“Having absolutely no control over what you’re wearing is a big one that really f***ing annoyed me for years,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.
“Having some guy make you have a fitting almost in front of them – stuff like that, it’s really belittling.”
Theron, 47, continued: “When I started, there was no conversation around it. It was like, ‘This is what you’re wearing.’”
The actor went on to address a specific experience she had with an unnamed male director.
“I remember one movie in particular, this male director who just kept bringing me in, fitting after fitting after fitting after… and it was just so...

The capital team threw on Andrea Belotti and Zeki Celik, but they had little impact, while the home side doubled the lead in the 55th minute with Lazar Samardzic’s missile.
Roberto Pereyra added a third in the 76th minute, before Sandi Lovric killed the game after a great team move, reports Xinhua.
Also on Sunday, Marko Arnautovic’s brace helped Bologna snatch a 2-2 draw with Spezia,...

Istanbul, Aug 26 (Ians) The draw of the UEFA Champions League group stage here witnessed Group C as the ‘Group of Death’, which contains Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen.
Humiliated 8-2 by Bayern in a one-off quarterfinal in 2020, Barca were twice beaten by the Germans last season as they failed to survive the group stage. Since then, Barca have made signings in an attempt to restore former glories. World-class striker Robert Lewandowski left Bayern for Barca in the summer, reports Xinhua.
Lewandowski, 34, signed for Barcelona during the close season for a fee that could reach 50 million euros after scoring 344 goals in eight years at Bayern.
“Only football writes such stories,” said Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.
“Barcelona have got stronger. They’ve done a thing or two in the transfer market. There will be some exciting games,” Salihamidzic added.

London, Aug 25 (Ians) Manchester United have confirmed the departure of defender Eric Bailly, who has joined Marseille on a season-long loan with the potential for a permanent transfer.
The Ivory Coast centre-back has swapped the Premier League for Ligue 1 on a deal that will initially run to the end of the 2022-23 season.
But Marseille will have the option to buy the 28-year-old before the campaign concludes.
According to reports, that will become an obligation if Bailly meets an appearances criteria and Marseille qualify for the Champions League.
Bailly arrived at Old Trafford from Villarreal in 2016 and was a member of United’s League Cup and Europa League-winning squad under Jose Mourinho in 2017.
However, various injury struggles, as well as the arrivals of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane, have seen him restricted to just 57 appearances since the start of the 2018-19 campaign.

Berlin, Aug 22 (Ians) Roma midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum broke his right leg in training on Sunday, just two weeks after joining the club.
The Netherlands international moved earlier this month on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain, with the Serie A side possessing an option to buy.
Wijnaldum won the Ligue 1 title with Psg last term, having joined on a free transfer from Liverpool, but he moved to join Jose Mourinho’s side after just a single season with the French giants.
He made his Serie A debut off the bench in Roma’s 1-0 victory over Salernitana on the opening weekend but is now set for a stint on the sidelines.
In a statement, Roma said, “Following an injury sustained during training this afternoon, Georginio Wijnaldum subsequently underwent medical tests that confirmed the presence of a fracture to the tibia in his right leg. The player will undergo further assessments in the coming days.

It’s not especially hard to make a triumphant sports season compelling. And for terrible seasons, there’s some perverse joy in satiating curiosity about what exactly went wrong. But for seasons that amount to a confused shrug, it’s much harder to find an engrossing through-line, or even a reason for remembering it beyond the final whistle blow.
This was the problem facing the latest season of “All or Nothing,” Amazon Prime’s anthology docuseries that’s previously featured several NFL teams, the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team and the Premier League’s Manchester City. This propulsive installment, which premieres its first three episodes Aug. 31, untangles the particularly turbulent 2019-2020 season for the Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur. And just like that, Jason Sudeikis’s coaching comedy Ted Lasso has completed the entertainment lifecycle from commercial to TV series back to commercial.

The spot aired during the real life UEFA Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-German (better luck next year Psg!). You can watch the conversation below.
Ted Lasso understandably needs some advice about how to coach football given that he’s only ever coached American football before. And he couldn’t have picked a better teacher than Mourinho. Known as “The Special One,” José Mourinho is one of the most decorated coaches in soccer history. Currently the manager of top flight English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur,...

Dazn is expanding its behind-the-scenes series The Making Of, setting the unprecedented launch across all nine of its global streaming markets on August 9 of a new soccer-themed installment.
The nine-part original series relives the significant games that helped define soccer’s — er, football’s — greatest figures. Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr. and legendary football manager José Mourinho headline the show.
Each 25-minute installment is dedicated to a particular match. Each of the three figures recounts three meaningful matches, recalling the emotion of the night and the impact it had on their careers and lives. Surrounding those centerpiece interviews are those with other players who were involved in the games, among them John O’Shea, Rafael Alcántara, Fernando Santos, Roberto Carlos and Julio Cesar. Journalists who covered the games and fans who were in the stadium join the reminiscences.
Moments explored in the show will include Ronaldo playing for Sporting Lisbon against...

Madrid — Sports streamer Dazn dazzled on Wednesday in Madrid, officially launching in Spain, its eighth territory worldwide, with rights to Spain of MotoGP, Premiere League and Euro League basketball, a thumping promo at a press conference, a beaming MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez on stage, and the double-backed announcements that Brazilian soccer icon Neymar had signed on as a Dazn global ambassador and ex-Chelsea, Real Madrid and Man U.’s José Mourinho, the most acerbic of soccer managers, as a commentator.

As the generalist streamers dive deeper into sports programming, specialist sports player Dazn is growing its lineup of originals alongside its coverage of live events. Next up is “In Our Blood,” a three-part series about three generations of iconic Spanish MotoGP riders: Alex Criville, Jorge Lorenzo, and Marc Marquez.
Former BT, ESPN, and Sky programming exec Grant Best is leading the originals charge as senior vice president of original programming and content development. The one-offs and series are being designed to sit alongside and bolster Dazn’s staple fare of live sports, he told Variety.
Best, who also produced the BAFTA-winning “Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad,” said that the plan is to look at various types of sports-themed programming. “If you can complement great live sport with original content, it can help massively,” he said. “We would like to make content with a twist.”

José Mourinho leads the tributes in this uncompromising and elegant doc about a man who rose above football’s ruthlessness
A slickly produced – but heartfelt and passionate – profile of Bobby Robson, the avuncular football manager who in 1990 came this close to getting England to the World Cup final for the first time since 1966. More Than a Manager is a cut above the usual sports biog: by kicking off with a gruesome account of Robson’s operation for a life-threatening nasal melanoma shortly before landing his job at Barcelona, it introduces grace notes of mortality and suffering into the usual mix of archive clips and talking heads.
Robson, all agree, was an absolute gentleman who took his eventual humiliation at Barcelona’s hands with fortitude, as well as managing to swallow his rage over Diego Maradona’s notorious “hand of God” goal in 1986. Happier times were found at Ipswich in the 1970s and early 80s,...

With less than a week to go before the 17/18 season starts, it’s hard to see the Premier League trophy ending up anywhere other than back up north. Though as a born and bred southerner, anything past the Watford Gap service station I classify as north. Which gives me a good chance of being right, as half of the clubs in the Premier League reside up north. So perhaps I should be more specific. In my opinion; the title will be heading to Manchester, now whether that be the blue half or the red, that’s harder to say.
With Manchester City having already spent over £200 million and Manchester United a close second, spending around £160 million, they lead the way in the transfer market this summer. They’ve sent out a clear message to the other title contenders, with only the Champions, Chelsea trying to keep up. Of course the...

It’s now hard to imagine a time when football was without goal line technology (Glt). The last few years have proven many things; the fact Luis Suarez randomly bites opposing players without warning, that England are a million miles away from winning a major tournament, underdogs can win the Premier League, and most importantly, that there is room within the game for technology.
With Glt being a huge success, it must once and for all convince the doubters that video technology will not ruin the game. In July 2010 English hearts were broken when Frank Lampard’s perfectly good goal wasn’t awarded, but without knowing it then, football was to change forever. This incident was the moment that Sepp Blatter re-opened discussions concerning the use of Glt, and how happy are we they decided to do that. Some moments, (Lampard’s goal against Germany not being the case), are impossible to call.

The words legend and superstar seem to get bandied about far too often these days.
Just because someone can do a trick or two and gets paid an absurd amount of money doesn’t mean they should be seen as brushing shoulders with the greats of yesteryear. Names such as George Best and Pele deserve the title – they were true icons of the beautiful game – but many players these days are wrongly labelled as the best thing since sliced bread.
There’s been many one-season wonders throughout the years and those whose egos makes them think they’re worthy of being worshipped, but many players these days – not including the likes of Lionel Messi of course – mistakenly believe their own hype.
So who exactly falls into the overrated category? Whose price tags have been ridiculous and who have the media helped build up into something they’re quite clearly not?...

In football these days it’s not unusual for someone who had no success on the pitch to be a genius in the dugout. Many of the most successful managers in the modern game barely know how to kick a ball. Sir Alex Ferguson may have had a modestly successful career as a striker but the likes of Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, Louis van Gaal and Roy Hodgson achieved nothing in the game before turning to management.
Why is that so many world class managers never played a high level, while so many world class players can’t seem to manage their way out of a paper bag? We may never know the reason, but maybe we can study the most egregious examples of managerial laughing stocks to find out why these legendary players failed so badly at management.

Chelsea have bid £45 million for Everton defender John Stones, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
This is the fourth offer the reigning Barclays Premier League champions have made for the England international, after seeing three bids knocked back by the Toffees last summer. Their final bid of £37million was point-blank refused by Roberto Martinez, despite Stones filing a formal transfer request.
Now, The Blues see the 21-year-old as the man to martial their leaky defence after setting off on one of the worst Premier League title defences of all time.
Towards the end of Jose Mourinho’s reign, both John Terry and Gary Cahill were hung out to dry. The players paid the price for numerous bad results Chelsea suffered. Who could forget former England skipper Terry being hauled off at half time at The Etihad during a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in August?

Manchester United are thought to be stepping up their hunt for Real Madrid centre back Sergio Ramos, and are eyeing up a bid for the Spaniard this summer, according to a report from news.ladbrokes.com.
The Red Devils came close to signing Ramos last year, but saw their deal fall flat as he signed a new contract with Real. The 29 year old would certainly cost Louis van Gaal and co. a pretty penny, with reports suggesting a price tag of between £44m and £59m.
According to Ladbrokes, Ramos’ agent has indicated that his client is likely to join whichever club Pep Guardiola is in charge of at the time. The current Bayern Munich boss has recently expressed a desire to manage in England next season, and with Louis van Gaal under immense pressure, he could well find himself in the Old Trafford hot-seat for 2016/17.

Rafa Benitez’s brief tenure at Real Madrid is set to come to a (perhaps unsurprising) end today, according to Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.
The Spaniard was only appointed at the Bernabeu back in the summer, following on from Carlo Ancelotti’s departure, but despite being handed a three-year deal it looks as though he’ll have lasted just over half-a-year in the job.
Speculation has been rife for a while that Benitez was set to be axed, despite the fact that his team sit just three points off the top of the table in La Liga. Reports of a possible dismissal first emerged back in November, after their 4-0 hammering to Barcelona in El Clasico, and have gained traction in recent weeks, even though his side put 10 goals past Rayo Vallecano just before Christmas.

On January 3rd, Sky’s cameras will descend on Selhurst Park once more as Palace seek to complete a league double over Chelsea for the first time ever.
When Palace beat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge back in August no one could have predicted quite how dire things would turn out for The Blues. Fast forward four months and Chelsea manager Darth Jose Mourinho lost his job with his side languishing just outside the relegation zone and for the fans, the marker pens and bedsheets made an appearance. That’s when you know things are serious.
There are no such worries in South London as Palace are riding high in fifth place. However, two consecutive scoreless draws in a row have meant that the pack behind them have closed the gap. A loss and an unfortunate series of results could see Palace drop down to ninth.

Alex Teixeira has verbally agreed a £30 million move to Chelsea, according to reports in the Daily Express.
The Shakhtar Donetsk attacking midfielder’s representatives have reportedly been in talks this week over a five-year deal that would see Teixeira become Carlo Ancelotti’s first acquisition of his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have been chasing 25-year-old Teixeira for the majority of 2015 and are determined to steam forward with the move in the wake of former manager Jose Mourinho’s departure.
Despite scoring an incredible 26 goals in 26 games in Ukraine this campaign, the Brazilian international is not an out-and-out forward, though will clearly bring firepower to Chelsea’s forward line with Diego Costa and Falcao under-performing and Loic Remy not being trusted under Mourinho’s reign.

Chelsea might have a struggle convincing the current third favourite (and intelligent pundit’s choice) to replace beleaguered manager Jose Mourinho, if former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti gets the acting bug and moves to Hollywood.
That might sound like the wild ravings of someone with a serious head injury, but it seems there is an actual possibility of it happening.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, the 56 year old is set for the most unlikely of cameos in Star Trek Beyond:
According to @Corriereit, @MrAncelotti will make a cameo role in the next "Star Trek Beyond" movie as a doctor. Scene filmed in Vancouver.

Jurgen Klopp has arrived on English soil and comfortably moved into Brendan Rodgers’ old Merseyside 1.2 million penthouse apartment. His arrival as Liverpool Fc manager could prove to be one of the most exciting things to happen to the Premier League since Jose Mourinho’s arrival in 2004 and despite the German labelling himself as “the normal one” he has the ability to be as influential at Anfield as the “special one” was (and still is, kind of) at Stamford Bridge.
The 48-year-old took over Dortmund in 2008 after the club finished 13th in Bundesliga under their previous manager Thomas Doll. Prior to his move he managed Mainz 05 from 2001 to 2008 and achieved promotion to the Bundesliga in 2004 before qualifying for the UEFA Cup in 2005-6. Under the German’s leadership Dortmund won two successive Bundesliga titles, the German Cup and reached the Champions League final in 2013 at Wembley under Klopp’s stewardship.

At Cobham, Jose Mourinho closes the door to his office and slumps in his chair, fearing the worst. His team look great in training but that would lull weaker managers into a false sense of security. Falcao scored twice with not a hair out of place, Terry was imperious in their usual 5-a-side session. He asks himself, “What am I not seeing?”.
Jose’s phone vibrates. It’s an email from the Fa about his post-match comments after the home defeat to Southampton. Great.
While he is the best manager the Blues have ever in football sentimentality is for the history books and, currently hovering above the relegation zone after eight games, Chelsea’s season has run aground.
It’s not yet the spectacular fall from grace Leeds United experienced in 2004 nor is it the arid ten-year trophy drought that forced Liverpool to hit the panic...
