It's been a couple of years since we've seen anything new from writer/director Pearry Reginald Teo but Teo is back with a new horror movie that looks particularly promising.
The Assent stars Robert Kazinsky as Joel, a single father whose son is not quite right. As a last-ditch effort, he employs the help of a priest who advises Joel that his son has been marked by the devil and the only way to save him is through an exorcism.
Yes, it's another religious horror film but The Assent seems a bit more interesting than the average possession movie - if only because of the fact that Kazinsky, a solid actor, is in it. The movie also stars Peter Jason, Florence Faivre, and Caden Dragomer.
What's more, Teo chooses to use traditional creature effects which, f...

“The Weeping Somnambulist” is taking its name off a humanitarian supply ship en-route to aid in the relief effort for Ganymede Station at the beginning of this chapter.
The opening of The Expanse Season 2 Episode 9 doesn’t hesitate to remind you there are large and looming questions this season.
What really happened on Ganymede—during the Earth-Mars military engagement And prior to those events?
And what is happening on Venus since Eros crashed there?
The title is a wordier way of saying “a crying sleepwalker" and that is almost an omen for how well-answered the lingering questions will be in this chapter.
Yes—the characters are all moving around the board, but they really won’t be passing “Go” just yet.
Well, this ship is a Grade-a piece of s*** but she’ll get us to Ganymede. I wouldn’t bet on it in a race, though…

[Editor’s note: Major spoilers for “The Expanse” Season 2, Episode 5, “Home,” below.]
If you’ve never read the books written by James S.A. Corey upon which “The Expanse” is based, then Episode 5 of the second season more than likely came as a massive shock. As a show adapted from a popular book series with serious genre roots, “The Expanse” has elicited comparisons to “Game of Thrones” before. But the series reached Red Wedding-levels of surprise with “Home,” in which Miller (Thomas Jane) bonds with the protomolecule-infected Julie Mao (Florence Faivre) to prevent the Eros station from crashing into Earth.

It’s a surprisingly romantic sequence, dense with visual effects to capture the depths to which Julie has become bonded with the protomolecule. But the actual filming featured none of those trappings: Jane and Faivre were acting, according to executive producer Mark Fergus, in “a big empty room with just a chair.

Syfy's upcoming drama "The Expanse" has the potential to change the game in a major way for science fiction on television: The series, starring Thomas Jane, Shohreh Aghdashloo and an intriguing ensemble cast, takes us from a 23rd century Earth to the rising colonies of Mars and the mining communities of the outer asteroid belt. Into 'The Expanse' (Part 1): What Syfy's New Sci-Fi Gamble Learned From 'True Detective' It's ultimately a human story, in part thanks to Julie Mao (Florence Faivre), a young woman who we first see at the beginning of the pilot, and whose life choices and mysterious fate come to represent an awful lot. But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of exciting sci-fi touches. In part two of a discussion with executive producers Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby and Naren Shankar conducted at the TCA 2015 Summer Press Tour, Indiewire got into the nitty-gritty of the show's production — for example,...

There’s a moment in the second novel of James S.A. Corey’s “The Expanse” series, Caliban’s War, when one of its characters suddenly stops looking at his problems on an intimate, personal scale, and puts them in comparison to the turmoil ushering itself across the story’s gritty, gripping version of the solar system. “He was in a tiny metal-and-ceramic box that was exchanging matter for energy to throw a half dozen primates across a vacuum larger than millions of oceans,” he thinks to himself. “Compared to that, how could anything else matter?”
There’s a similar euphoric malaise dripping from the edges of Syfy’s interpretation of The Expanse (season one is mostly book one, Leviathan Wakes, with a handful of tidbits and characters corralled in from Caliban’s War), which chart the adventures of a few unlucky individuals...
