Last night, Angelenos enjoying Bob’s Burgers on Fxx saw an unusual bit of animation, even for those accustomed to the unexpected antics of the Belcher family. A chyron appeared across the bottom of the TV screen that read “Blizzard Warning.” It continued with a message that even longtime L.A. residents have never seen before: “The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for the following California Counties: Ventura, Los Angeles. Effective until February 22, 3:56 Am Pst.”
According to the National Weather Service, it’s one of the only Blizzard Warnings ever issued for the area, and the first in more than three decades. The alert presaged a dusting of snow in the Antelope Valley and Acton reported at about 10:40 p.m. by NBC4 meteorologist Melissa Magee. Other programming was interrupted by the warning as well, including the L.A. Kings-Minnesota Wild game on Bally Sports West.

Liev Schreiber urged a crowd of D.C. lawmakers, ambassadors and media figures for continued support for Ukrainians as the one-year anniversary nears of Russia’s attempted invasion.
The occasion was UnSanctioned, an event at the French ambassador’s residence that brought together those who have been sanctioned by Vladimir Putin’s regime to support the humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
The list, as Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova noted, is long. The sanctioned guests at the Friday evening event included Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, State Department Spokesman Ned Price, Rep. The week of chaos, confusion, and (literal) infighting that preceded Kevin McCarthy’s election as speaker was a pretty strong indication that the Republican Party’s control of the House of Representatives was going to be a shitshow.
They’ve been in control for a week now. Yes, it’s been a shitshow, but the past few days have also served as a reminder that along with all of the antics comes a laser-like focus on derailing the American government.
Republicans have hit the ground running since McCarthy belatedly took up the gavel last Friday.

Update: C-span has formally asked House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to cover floor proceedings by installing a few additional cameras in the chamber.
The letter from C-span co-ceo Susan Swain follows widespread praise that the network received for its coverage of last week’s speaker vote. Because it was a special event, C-span obtained permission to cover the proceedings with its own cameras. That gave viewers a much more candid glimpse of lawmakers on the floor. Most other times, C-span coverage of the House floor is via stationary cameras controlled by the government.
“During last week’s Speaker election, C-span was permitted to bring its own cameras into the chamber,” Swain wrote. “The public, press, and Member reaction to C-span’s coverage-along with the “transparency” themes in your new rules package-have encouraged us to resubmit a request we have made to your predecessors without success.”

According to Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, America’s founding fathers would have been totally fine with the physical altercation that took place on the House floor last week among members of his party. During the 14th round of voting to elect a speaker late Thursday night, Rep. Richard Hudson restrained Rep. Mike Rogers when Rogers angrily confronted fellow GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz for refusing to support Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s bid to lead the Republican majority.

Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) finally got the speakership early Saturday morning, but not before a weeklong slog that saw flared tempers, animated huddles and, in the penultimate drama before his moment of victory, a near-brawl.
Inside the chamber, many reporters in the press gallery had risen from their seats once McCarthy walked down the center aisle to converse with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl), the lone holdout he needed to obtain a majority, as McCarthy’s allies sat and crouched down to plead with the dissident. “On your knees,” one Democrat said loudly, as other lawmakers began to fix their gaze on what was unfolding.
Soon voices were raised. Gaetz pointed his finger at McCarthy, and McCarthy’s face was one of utter frustration. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-al) walked over and, in a moment that will forever live in the annals of House speaker votes, began to lunge at Gaetz before being restrained by Rep.

The nation’s hottest political TV drama came to an end early Saturday when California Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy was finally elected Speaker of the House after a wild climax to the chaos that has unfolded on the floor of Congress during the past week.
McCarthy prevailed on the 15th election for the powerful post that steers the policy agenda and the rulebook for House of Representatives. The Capitol has been the site of extraordinary scenes of newly elected, far-right Representatives balking at McCarthy’s leadership as a protest against the Washington, D.C. status quo. The final tally for McCarthy was 216 votes, with another six defiant Republicans voting “present” for election.
The late-night session included scenes of GOP firebrands Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Matt Gaetz of Florida taking the spotlight in getting McCarthy over the last hurdle to grab the gavel. At one point, according to CNN,...

Update: Kevin McCarthy, in his first speech after being elected speaker, said, “I hope that one thing is clear after this week: I never give up.”
“My father always told me: It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish. We have got to finish strong for the American people.”
But he signaled that Republicans would conduct an extensive series of inquiries and investigations. “Let me be clear: We will use the power of the purse and the power of the subpoena to get the job done.” He promised probes of the “origins of Covid and the weaponization of the FBI.”
After his own swearing in, at 1:35 Am Et on Saturday, McCarthy gave the oath to all of the members of the 118th Congress.
Previously: Kevin McCarthy won the speakership on the 15th House ballot, ending weeklong drama, GOP discord that at times played out on the House floor.

Amazon has resumed political contributions to lawmakers who voted to object to the 2020 electoral vote count on January 6th, 2021, the day that Donald Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in an effort to block the results that would make Joe Biden the winner of the presidency.
Amazon’s contributions, first reported by the website Popular Information, were to nine lawmakers, all of whom voted against the certification of electoral votes in one or more states.
In the aftermath of January 6, Amazon announced that its corporate Pac would pause contributions and said that they intended “to discuss our concerns directly with those Members we have previously supported and will evaluate their responses as we consider future Pac contributions.” Amazon called the objections to Biden’s electoral certification an “unacceptable attempt to undermine a legitimate democratic process.”

It's nearly fall, but the spooky season is already here. Stir-crazed masses battling a lingering pandemic, climate change, and upheaval are pulling out the seasonal decor earlier, eager to change the vibe and settle into the oddly comforting world of the strange and the morbid. Over the coming weeks, theaters across North America will oblige and showcase an "X" prequel, a star-studded Olivia Wilde-directed thriller, the exceedingly creepy-looking psych-thriller "Smile," and Zach Cregger's rental home hellscape "Barbarian." As folks will start to pull out their sweaters and add a little pumpkin to their coffee, and they'll be in need of some at-home entertainment to match the oncoming autumn mood. For horror fans, the fall equinox (and the entire month that precedes it) is prime time, when the programming powers-that-be start adding a little more genre spice to their offerings in anticipation of Halloween.

Long titles seem to be a bit of a trend when it comes to both books and film. Even more so in the genre. But I can see why because they always gain my interest and We’re All Going To The World’s Fair is no different.
It is a title though that doesn’t really give away anything as far as what the film is about. Showing a teenager in front of her computer screen for big parts of the film, ‘World’s Fair’ is the story of that teenager and her immersion into an online role-playing horror game. Alone in her attic bedroom she begins to document the changes that may or may not be happening to her.
There have been more and more movies that are shot from a computer or phone screen.

Anna Cobb in We’re All Going To The World’s Fair
In the first half of my interview with Jane Schoenbrun about We’re All Going To The World’s Fair, we discussed issues around establishing one’s identity as a teenager, how people relate to each other online. and the ways in which filmmakers can challenge viewers’ tendency to package what they see in comfortable categories. In this half we discuss the film’s shifting power dynamics, the art of revealing a character through what they watch, and heroine Casey’s use of Asmr. We begin by looking at most viewers’ assumption that, young and naive as she is, Casey (Anna Cobb) is in danger from Jlb (Michael J Rogers), and the gradual process through which the film complicates that and establishes that she understands the online territory in which they’re communicating better than he does.

His career may have been on a downward trajectory since District 9, but there's no way Neill Blomkamp made a movie as shitty as Demonic. If he did (and I still haven't quite accepted that he did) there must be something more to it than meets the eye. On the surface it's a generic tale of demonic possession in which worn-out trope after worn-out trope competes to see which can elicit the biggest eye-roll. It's an acceptable parody of the genre until the realisation sets in that no it isn't, the film is just like this and no plot twist or revelation is coming to save it.
It's infuriating. None of the characters are fleshed out enough to care about, leaving the freewheeling mind to ponder such mysteries as "is that the botanist lad out of The Expanse?" (it is!) and "What on earth is Michael J Rogers doing in this.

Neill Blomkamp is back but the director who is best known for his sci-fi movies is dipping his toes into horror with his new feature Demonic.
Written and directed by Blomkamp, the film stars Carly Pope, Nathalie Boltt, Chris William Martin, Michael J Rogers, and Andrea Agur but beyond that, there's very little information on the film beyond the official synopsis which reads:
A young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother and daughter are ruthlessly revealed.
While there aren't many more details on the movie, a pair of new images and a behind-the-scenes video were released today.

For the year Sundance goes virtual, it’s inevitable that a few movies play differently than expected. It’s not the most ideal scenario for most projects. Then there’s something like We’re All Going to the World’s Fair that, with its virtual premiere, perhaps plays better than what Jane Schoenbrun could have gotten by showing it at the Ray or the Eccles. Watching it on a laptop just felt right. Watching it alone in the dark was even more appropriate. There’s a connection here. Like the one in the movie, it’s sincere, but it defies categorization.

"Do you think he could've done it?" Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie mystery thriller titled Hollow in the Land, the feature directorial debut of Canadian filmmaker Scooter Corkle. Hollow in the Land is a small-town murder mystery thriller starring Dianna Agron as a woman who decides track down her brother to clear his name after being blamed for a crime he didn't commit. There seems to be a few other twists and turns, as expect, in this film described as "Winter's Bone-meets-'Making a Murderer'". The full cast includes Jared Abrahamson, Shawn Ashmore, Rachelle Lefevre, Sarah Dugdale, Jessica McLeod and Michael Rogers. This looks quite solid, perhaps a strong debut for Corkle. It also seems like another chance for Agron to show how talented she is, leading the entire film. Here's the first official trailer for Scooter Corkle's Hollow in the Land,...

“Beyond the Black Rainbow” is definitely the most unique film that I’ve seen lately. I’m stealing my own thunder early on, but just that statement alone merits a recommendation. If anyone is into really iconoclastic filmmaking where symbolisms abound against a backdrop of some sophisticated imagery, this is their film. Or if anyone is just into a pretty freaky deaky movie, this is also their film.

There's something more chilling about movies based on true events. Knowing that at least some version of what you're seeing on the screen actually happened in real life makes the movie more powerful. With the upcoming release of The Quiet Ones, we decided to reminisce about other movies based on horrific real life events.
The Quiet Ones is inspired by a true story of a university experiment done on a young girl that goes horribly, horribly wrong, so we focused on movies based on claims of supernatural true events.
There is a huge list of honorable mentions in this category. We could even break it down into sub-categories, like movies based on the antics of Ed Gein: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs, Psycho and Deranged. True crime reenactments: In Cold Blood, Helter Skelter and Zodiac just to name a few of the best. Even real...

Beyond The Black Rainbow is a surreal sci-fi thriller from Vancouver director Panos Cosmatos. It’s a film that is more about delivering sensation and imagery than narrative, although there is plenty of that to reward the astute viewer. Btbr tells the story of Elena (Eva Allan), a young resident/captive of a retro-futuristic hippie commune committed to better living through mind-altering chemistry. Supervised by the seriously creepy Dr. Barry Niles (Michael Rogers) and living in a semi-lucid state, she eventually attempts to escape and discover the world beyond the walls of the sterile, menacing Arboria Institute.

We want to help audiences decide what to see (if they can’t see everything!), so in the days to come check this space for previews of the films in the festival.

*full disclosure: a Blu-Ray screener of this film was provided by Magnolia Home Ent. Director/writer: Panos Cosmatos. Cast: Michael Rogers, Eva Allan, Scott Hylands, Marilyn Norry and Rondel Reynoldson. It is often best to label a film experimental when it does not follow certain film patterns. Director Panos Cosmatos, son of George Cosmatos (Tombstone), seems almost uninterested in plot. Instead, Beyond the Black Rainbow focuses more on visual style and tone while trying to provide an interesting experience for viewers. This style will not be appreciated by the majority, but this hallucinogenic thriller held this watcher's attention all the way through. Cinematographer Norm Li's approach to the film harkens back to '70s sci-fi. This era saw the rise of science fiction and many of Norm Li's sets, costumes and backgrounds allude to or pay homage to this time period. The setting for the film is 1983 and the set pieces,...

This review originally was posted here at We Are Movie Geeks just after Beyond The Black Rainbow was screened at Fantastic Fest in Austin Texas last September. Beyond The Black Rainbow will be playing tonight, July 6th and tomorrow night July 7th at The Hi-Pointe Theater (Located at 1005 McCausland Avenue) in St. Louis as part of Destroy The Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse. The pre-show starts at 11:30pm both nights and the film screens at midnight.
The number of films that can be legitimately classified as an experience are few. More than merely a movie, those that do surface from the traditional fray are usually unforgettable. Beyond The Black Rainbow is one of these experiences, having embedded itself deeply in my mind. One of the reasons I chose to wait a few days before writing this review is that the film is continues to be absorbed into my memory.

Beyond The Black Rainbow is a feast for the ears and the eyes. It is a science-fiction film that wears its inspirations on its sleeve, but at the same time it is quite unlike anything that you’ve likely seen before. The fact that this is a first-time feature from director Panos Cosmatos is nothing short of stunning. Veteran directors do not often create films with such a self-assured sense of style and control. Of course, it can be argued that a lot of directors eschew those trappings in order to appeal to the most broad audience possible, the lowest common denominator, if you will. Cosmatos doesn’t have that kind of aspiration. His is a singular vision. It may not be everyone’s fancy, but for those of you who enjoy challenging cinema, Beyond The Black Rainbow is full of rewards.

After a successful run on the festival circuit, Beyond the Black Rainbow begins a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on Friday. Filled with many gorgeous, perplexing wonders, the film fairly well demands that it be experienced in a cinema, if at all possible. James Marsh laid out the premise in his review: With his ambitious first feature, writer-director Panos Cosmatos emerges as a bold new visionary in science-fiction filmmaking. Beautifully shot and meticulously designed, Beyond the Black Rainbow takes place in an alternate 1986, where a secretive scientific operation called the Arboria Initiative is experimenting with mind-altering drugs in an attempt to explore the limitless possibilities of the human psyche. This is a story about control: Cosmatos’ Throwback a Challenging Piece of Psychedilia
Words cannot rightfully describe Beyond the Black Rainbow, the debut of filmmaker Panos Cosmatos (the son of George Cosmatos of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Tombstone fame), a film that’s obviously imbued and informed by several notable filmmakers yet never actually pays homage to any particular film. Rather, Cosmatos has created a nightmarish world that’s aggravating, hypnotic, and original. While he may not surpass David Lynch in the epitome of the art house mindfuck, he comes close with a film that’s more than a feeling—it’s a state of mind.
Crimson numerals inform us that it’s 1983 and infomercial footage of Mercurio Arboria (Scott Hylands) explains what his Arborian Institute has to offer, namely “a state of mind, a way of being,” with the methods he has developed to create a “happier you” with “serenity through technology.

Anyone bored with the current crop of big budget studio movies in theaters and are looking for something a little different - perhaps something that harks back to the great genre movies of the early '80s - should look no further than Panos Costmatos' Beyond the Black Rainbow, an homage to the midnight movies and video store cult faves, many which have been so extremely inspirational to today's horror filmmaker.
The majority of his film takes place at an institute founded by the mysterious Mercurio Arboria where one Dr. Barry Nyle, played by Michael Rogers (Hellraiser: Hellseeker), has been focusing his examinations on one particular subject, a young woman named Elena (Eva Allen), who has been at the institute for years and seems to possess unimaginable power.

So, you’re thinking of Breaking Bad, but need the perfect movie to Break Bad to. How about one hell of a psychedelic thrill ride that will show you just how deep the rabbit hole goes? Check out this new trailer for Beyond The Black Rainbow. It has an 80s style that reminds me of Logan’s Run, mixed with a little of The Cell.
After you watch the trailer, let me know if you think the style was meth or acid induced.
Beyond the Black Rainbow stars Michael Rogers, Eva Allan, and Scott Hylands. It is directed by Panos Cosmatos.

If you wanted me to count off the most memorable theatrical experiences I had throughout 2011, the Tribeca premiere of Beyond the Black Rainbow would be right near the top. But trying to sum up the debut feature from writer and director Panos Cosmatos in a few sentences is a fool’s errand, so take my personal description for what it may be worth: Imagine if, in the year 1983, a sci-fi-loving electronic music enthusiast took a hallucinogenic drug and fell asleep. Beyond the Black Rainbow would either be his ultimate dream or his worst nightmare.
I’ve been telling people about the film for almost eleven months — it was even a 2011 honorable mention — and, now, they can finally get some idea by watching this terrific new trailer from Apple. Here, we get some of Cosmatos‘ chilling compositions, a brief display of the great cinematography, and a little ambient soundtrack — but it...

What can I say about Beyond the Black Rainbow that hasn’t already been said about licking toads while watching a 70s slasher flick behind your neighborhood scientific research compound? Writer/director Panos Cosmatos‘s deranged trip down the rabbit hole feels like Cronenberg and Argento furiously impregnated a robot named Tarkovsky. It’s homage at its highest form – work born directly from the visual and storytelling tropes of iconic artists that manages to feel brand new with the presence of a fresh personality. In the 80s-set film, and stop me if you’ve heard this one, Elena (Eva Allan) is held captive in a research facility by Barry Nyle (Michael Rogers), the demented product of a cult-like program born two decades earlier that sought to merge science and religion. As he slowly deteriorates mentally, blood starts spilling, but even if Elena gets a chance to escape, she’ll have him murderously on her trail. The...

Let's start the weekly round-up with Grimm.
Grimm's ratings dropped a little this week, but the show still won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot, finishing ahead of CSI: NY, Fringe and Supernatural, and rising by a full frakking ratings point (1.8) after Chuck (0.8). Wake up, Chuck.
Hitfix visited the set in Portland recently and posted a lengthy report. Here is a snippet:
Sasha Roiz on how his character will develop later in the series: "I’m not a Grimm descendent, but I'm a descendent of a long line that dates back just as Grimm does and we have a bit of a history and a past, so my line is a royal line and that will slowly unfold throughout the series."Collider has a longer interview with Sasha and Reggie Lee (more at the link):
It’s nice to see your character – like the main character – has the duality.

Beyond the Black Rainbow
Directed by Panos Cosmatos
Canada, 2010
If any of the many 1980s-synth-homage bands out there right now need a music video they should call Panos Cosmatos immediately. His Beyond the Black Rainbow, while failing to serve much feature-length cinematic purpose, is the perfect vehicle for a 3 ½ minute, leather-clad, red-saturated, Knight Rider-esque, video accompaniment.
Unfortunately, Beyond the Black Rainbow runs 110 minutes (making it, by my count, about 106.5 minutes too long). The plot, which mixes a bit of horror and science fiction references including Cronenberg, Argento, Kubrick, and Lucas, into its plodding pace, is certainly secondary to director Cosmatos’ visuals. A mad scientist Barry (Michael Rogers) keeps a young, mysterious girl Elena (Eva Allen) locked in an equally mysterious, sterile labyrinth. Barry’s got some issues. He’s also got a dark past, personified by his former mentor Mercurio (Scott Hylands), whom he now injects with drugs on a regular basis.

This is a film that does require some time to digest. To fully appreciate the film, patience and an open mind are required. Suggesting the film needs time to be fully understood, however, is a flawed approach to its viewing, which is at least partially a subjective endeavor.

“Hey man . . . when did you drop?” Many people might see Panos Cosmatos‘ feature film debut as an excuse to take some acid and kick back and look at pretty colors. He’s obviously not the only one who has made a film in this ballpark. This can also be said of such films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Eraserhead, and El Topo. Not a bad group of films to be a part of. Granted, you don’t have to partake in illegal substances to enjoy those films or this new ambitious piece of cinema. What’s interesting though is the fact that the three films previously mentioned seem to be clear inspirations for Panos and his bizarre kaleidoscope colored alternate future. Beyond the Black Rainbow, like those films, is a worthy addition to a line-up of future midnight movies that seems destined to be rescued over the coming years by film-lovers (drug-induced or not) exclaiming,...

Beyond The Black Rainbow
Directed by Panos Cosmatos
Screenplay Panos Cosmatos
Canada, 2011
Director Panos Cosmatos pays homage to sci-fi films of the 70′s and 80′s with his first feature Beyond The Black Rainbow, a melting pot rich in bold images and thick in retro atmosphere. While many claim Cosmatos exhibits a Kubrikian influence, Rainbow is best described as follows: a Richard Stanley piece on acid, with a dash of Thx 1138, echoes of Solaris, the iconography of Luis Buñuel and Kenneth Anger – the music of John Carpenter, the provocative visions of Dario Argento and David Cronenberg, and a narrative structure reminiscent of David Lynch and Ken Russell. Yet despite its cinematic influences, Cosmatos produces something that has a distinct character all its own. Describing what the film is about is a tough task, but it can be said that Black Rainbow explores notions of inter-dimensional time travel and control, both psychological and physical.

Austin's Fantastic Fest opens today and, for MSN's Hitlist, James Rocchi asks co-founder Tim League (who's also, of course, the Alamo Drafthouse CEO known for taking a debate or two at the Fest to the boxing ring at the Highball), to describe the event "in one sentence that doesn't get you sent to jail."
