Irish music legend Sinéad O’Connor will forever be known for her incredible cultural contributions. Sadly, she died in July 2023, just 18 months after the death of her 17-year-old son. And she caused quite a lot of controversy through the years, especially regarding her religious views. So, what was Sinéad O’Connor’s religion? Here’s what to know.
What was Sinéad O’Connor’s religion? She converted to Islam
Sinéad O’Connor’s religion changed through the years. She considered herself a Christian for quite some time, as she believed in Jesus Christ and the core concepts that Christianity taught. In the late 1990s, Bishop Michael Cox of the Irish Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church ordained her as a priest. But the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t consider the ordination of women valid, and they threatened excommunication for anyone ordaining women.
Nevertheless, O’Connor took becoming a priest seriously. She took...

Kevin Bakhurst, the newly appointed director-general of Ireland’s national broadcaster Rte, has stood down the company’s entire executive board following a pay scandal involving the broadcaster’s lead presenter.
Bakhurst announced the move in an email to Rte staff on Monday morning, his first day in office. In the email, Bakhurst said an interim leadership team would be appointed to continue running the organization before a permanent board is set, the BBC reported.
Bakhurst, who had stints in senior roles at the BBC and UK media regulator Ofcom, took over from former director general Dee Forbes, who resigned last month. Forbes’s resignation followed after it was discovered that RTÉ made undisclosed payments to its top presenter. An audit of the organization’s finances found presenter Ryan Tubridy was paid €345,000 more than what was declared publicly between 2017 and 2022.

Kevin Bakhurst took charge as the new director general of Ireland’s national broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (Rte) on Monday and his first act was to stand down the executive board and replace it with a temporary interim leadership team.
Rte has been rocked with scandal in recent weeks for overpaying presenter Ryan Tubridy. The matter led to the suspension and subsequent resignation of Rte director general Dee Forbes, a former high-level Discovery executive and the Irish government ordering two separate reviews into the scandal.
In an email to staff on Monday morning, Bakhurst, who had a previous stint as managing director of news and current affairs and deputy director general at Rte from 2012-2016 and was with U.K. media regulator Ofcom and the BBC earlier, laid out a no-nonsense approach.

After a scandal that rocked Ireland in recent days over national broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (Rte) overpaying presenter Ryan Tubridy, the country’s government has ordered two separate reviews into the scandal.
The matter led to the suspension and subsequent resignation of Rte director general Dee Forbes, a former high-level Discovery executive.
On Tuesday, Ireland’s Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin T.D., announced that she will be commissioning an independent, root and branch examination of Rte composed of two separate and parallel reviews: a review of governance and culture; and a review of contractor fees, human resources and other matters.
The reviews will each be directed by two different three-person expert advisory committees who will oversee the work of a professional services firm that will be appointed to work on the reviews. The committees will work in parallel and coordinate where applicable and...

Irish public service broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (Rte) has suspended its director general Dee Forbes, a former high-level Discovery executive, over an ongoing scandal around an overpaid TV host.
Presenter Ryan Tubridy was paid €345,000 more than his €420,000 annual published salary between 2017 and 2022, the Rte board said in a statement on Thursday. The excess amount remained undeclared. Tubridy, who hosted the “Late Late Show” until quitting in March, has continued with his weekday program “The Ryan Tubridy Show,” though he did not present the show on Friday.
The Rte board issued another statement on Friday indicating that director general Forbes was suspended from the broadcaster on June 21. “There are processes ongoing and Rte must be mindful of its legal responsibilities and the rights of individuals. Rte will not be commenting further on this issue at this time.”

Actor Colin Farrell has joked that living with actor Barry Keoghan was like living with “raccoons”. The pair shared a house while filming Martin McDonagh’s ‘Banshees of Inisherin’ in Ireland but Colin admitted the younger actor tried his patience with his messy ways, reports ‘femalefirst.co.uk.’
Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on ‘The Late Late Show’, he said: “He lived with me during the film and you know, I’d come in the morning and the place was like raccoons had been there – I’m not joking.”
“One morning I came in and it was like, excuse my French, was like a p*** take, right. I came in and there was a carton of milk on its side and it was empty. Heather Mills is tired of getting asked about her ex-husband.
Mills, who was married to Paul McCartney for six years, told The Late Late Show with Ryan Tubridy that she doesn't want to talk about him.
"I don't want this interview to be all about Paul. That umbilical cord was broken," she said."He's married someone else and I agreed to come on the show so it wasn't just all about Paul."
Mills has a lot to talk about as she's a ski-racer with a prosthetic leg, helps animals, owns the biggest vegan company in the world and counsels thousands of people with disabilities.
In spite of the fact that she did not want the interview to be about her ex, she spoke about how she fell out of love with him.

Sinead O'Connor has a lot of negative things to say about pop music these days. The Irish singer, who has been in the news lately due to an odd public feud with Miley Cyrus, has now attacked Simon Cowell, executive producer and judge on shows like "The X Factor" and "American Idol."
Speaking on the Irish talk show, "The Late Late Show," O'Connor told host Ryan Tubridy that the music industry was responsible for its art being in a bad state. "I feel sorry for the murder of music and rock 'n' roll, which has happened because of the industry," she said on the program. "Because of Simon Cowell, [British 'X Factor' judge] Louis Walsh -- they've murdered music. I stand to say it on behalf of every musician in the world, and they'll agree with me."

Okay, this isn't too surprising given that the memory of Uncle Ben is a key emotional hook for Peter Parker in both the comics and movies, but it looks like the dead will rise (kind of) for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Hitting Ireland's "The Late Late Show" last week to talk about his human rights project “Voices From The Front Line,” Martin Sheen revealed that he's taken the call to come off the bench for the Spidey sequel. "Well they called me back, I don't know what the part's going to be but I'm going to be Uncle Ben once again in 'Spider-Man' next year. We shoot in February," he told host Ryan Tubridy. Of course, since he died in the last movie, it's pretty safe to say he'll be relegated to flashbacks. Sheen joins the growing cast that includes newcomers Dane DeHaan, Jamie Foxx and Shailene Woodley with the returning Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

One Direction star Niall Horan's father has admitted that he is worried about when the group's success comes to an end. Bobby Horan spoke to Irish presenter Ryan Tubridy on 2Fm about the group's success in America, which earlier this week saw them make history as the first British/Irish group to debut at number one with their album Up All Night. "The only thing I'm worried about is hopefully it'll be a long period being at the top," Horan said. "The comedown from that, I'm a little bit worried about. It's always at the back of my mind. You're up there on a high, but it's a big drop after that." However, the butcher is confident that his son is dealing with the pressures of being in the public eye, adding: "But he seems to be coping with everything brilliantly - a lot better than I would."
