Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Labor Day weekend wasn’t good for the two new wide releases at all, although the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans (DreamWorks), starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, ended up doing far better of the two. Also as expected, Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems) won the weekend with a four-day total of $19.7 million, a little less than I predicted. The Light Between Oceans ended up with slightly over $6 million, roughly the same as my original prediction but 20th Century Fox’s thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, bomb-bomb-bombed with a ridiculously bad four-day opening of just $2.5 million in its first four days. The Mexican comedy No Manches Frida (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ended up faring better in just 362 theaters,...

"We're brothers now." A new comedy from the people behind Saturday Night Live. Brother Nature is an indie comedy produced by SNL's Lorne Michaels, featuring at least four SNL cast members. The story involves a straight-laced politician named Roger, played by Taran Killam, who goes on a retreat to a cabin with his dream girl, played by Gillian Jacobs. But in the woods they meet his soon-to-be-brother-in-law, played by Bobby Moynihan, and his family, and things get wild as expected. Also featuring Rita Wilson, Bill Pullman, Ellen Bloodworth, Sarah Burns, Giancarlo Esposito, Rachael Harris, Kumail Nanjiani, Kenan Thompson and David Wain. This is chock full of really dumb humor that makes me wonder if it's going to feel like a very drawn out SNL skit that just doesn't work on the big screen. Have fun. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Matt and Oz's Brother Nature, from YouTube:...

Exclusive: Comedy Central has given a pilot pickup to Checked Out, a comedy written by Workaholics co-executive producer Craig Digregorio. The project, to be directed by Matt Villines and Oz Rodriguez (Saturday Night Live), follows two co-dependent, odd-couple cousins (Sean Clements and Dominic Dierkes) trying to manage a youth hostel without fully understanding youth, managing, hostels, or how people normally behave. Digregorio, Clements, Dierkes, Oly Obst and Greg Walter of 3 Arts and Andrew O’Connor of Objective Media executive produce. The project took an entrepreneurial route to pilot. Instead of selling a pitch for a script order, Digregorio and his managers at 3 Arts opted to shoot an independently financed nearly full-length presentation starring Clements and Dierkes, who are story editors on Workaholics and have written and performed together in Ucb improv comedy troupes. The presentation, which landed the group a green light at Comedy Central, also landed Billy Zane who...

The sketch group Honor Student is David Neher, Matt Villines, Osmany Rodriguez, Jennie Pierson, Daniel Cirilo, and John McKinney. They've been making Internet videos since 2006, but their work with Funny or Die has led to greater exposure, including slots on the HBO late-night show Funny or Die Presents. We caught up with Neher and Pierson separately via email and stitched their answers together. Think of it as The Newlywed Game as a Funny or Die sketch. Maybe Honor Student will make it a sketch? Before we get too carried away with ourselves, here's Neher and Pierson on their journey as young creatives in Hollywood.

It was only a matter of time before men's fascination with "bromances" led to something much darker and more unseemly. Thanks to filmmakers Matt Villines and Osmany Rodriguez the dark side of platonic man-love has been exposed. That's right, these two intrepid filmmakers have shined a light on a terrifying new phenomenon sweeping the nation: "brostitution."
Brostitution is exactly what you think it is -- if you think it's paying a man to hang out, drink beer and play videogames in a completely non-sexual way. Villines and Rodriguez have gone deep into this unsavory underworld and spent time with countless brostitutes who share what their life is really like -- the keg parties, the taco nights, the marathon Madden sessions with men who want someone to listen while they complain about their girlfriends. It's exposed in this amusing clip.
Tim Roth turns up as a pimp who isn't afraid to keep his bros in line.
