Director J.J. Abrams' philosophy toward making his 2009 reboot of "Star Trek" likely involved a lot of uses of the words "high octane" and "kicked into overdrive." The characters in Abrams' "Star Trek" resemble the ones we all remember from the 1966 TV series, but electrified for a modern, action-hungry audience. Kirk (Chris Pine) is not just a captain who rules by instinct and occasionally snogs alien women (as William Shatner did), but a rash, skirt-chasing, destructive young punk who gets into bar brawls. Spock (Zachary Quinto) is not merely a logical scientist who, under rare circumstances, lets his human emotions slip through his stony visage (as Leonard Nimoy was), but a perpetually annoyed pill who, more regularly, is given to flights of rage and/or romance.
In the case of Sulu (John Cho), he is not merely a capable pilot with unusual hobbies, a great sense of humor, and a...

The Jesus story wasn't as bad as it could have been.
Spoilers for The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 7 made it seem like this would be a ridiculous story, but by halfway through the hour, "Jesus" had been cured of his delusions and was struggling with feelings of inadequacy.
That was utterly on-brand for The Good Doctor, yet entirely unpredictable. Well played!
Most stories of this nature follow a pattern in which something miraculous happens to make the skeptics and non-believers wonder whether they've encountered the Son of God after all.
Thankfully, The Good Doctor didn't use that tired TV trope. Instead, Jesus' story turned into a tale about a guy who felt so insignificant that he convinced himself he was Jesus to feel like he mattered in this world.
Many people are walking around like that, desperate for someone to notice them so they can prove to themselves they're not invisible.

Food Network fans are sounding off about the “grossest” dishes they’ve ever seen served up on one of the channel’s many cooking shows, and one viewer thinks they’ve found the front-runner. As reported by The Sun U.S., a fan took to the Food Network Reddit forum to ask, “What’s the grossest thing you’ve seen a contestant make on any of these shows?” That same user offered up a revolting concoction from budding chef Emily Lim on a Season 33 episode of Guy’s Grocery Games, hosted by Food Network stalwart Guy Fieri. The clip from the show’s “Flavortown Auction” episode sees Lim creating a “bountiful brunch” of canned and frozen foods. Her dish includes waffles, tater tots, mixed green vegetables, and macaroni and cheese, topped off with chili sauce and syrup from a can of fruit cocktail. Oh, and let’s not forget the Salisbury steak entree.

The Good Doctor is finally back, but spoilers suggest a silly story as the series enters the final season's home stretch.
Shaun and Jordan treat a woman with renal failure... and a potential donor who may have a serious mental condition.
The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 7 spoilers point to an episode that could be great but is more likely to be ridiculous. Considering how close we are to the end of the series' run, this is not great news!
ABC hasn't released much info yet, but the spoiler video and description suggest that the episode will center around a man who thinks he is Jesus.
This is one tired TV trope I could do without. Television is full of pseudo-Jesuses who may or may not be the real thing and skeptical people who realize that they've come in contact with the Messiah Himself by the end of the hour.

When the team at Watcher Entertainment announced that they would be leaving YouTube in order to post content exclusively on their own subscription-only page, they clearly thought that fans would be excited about the move.
They were very, very wrong.
The backlash against the digital media studio -- which was founded in 2020 by a trio of former Buzzfeed employees -- was swift and immediate.
Usually, an uproar from a company's customer base is the sort of thing that's met with a boilerplate apology and little else.
But in this case, the outcry on Reddit and on the group's previous YouTube posts wound up having a significant impact.
Earlier this week, Watcher's three founders -- Steven Lim, Ryan Bergara, and Shane Madej -- made a video in which they reacted to the strong backlash against their unexpected business decision.
“We messed up,” CEO Lim said in the clip.

After viewer backlash, Watcher’s content is staying on YouTube. But the studio says it’s struggling.
Last week, Watcher–the content studio founded in 2019 by former Buzzfeed-ers Ryan Bergara, Steven Lim, and Shane Madej–surprised viewers by announcing it would no longer be uploading its videos to YouTube.
Instead, it said, it would take further episodes of shows like Ghost Files, Mystery Files, and Puppet History to its own new, standalone, and paywalled platform, where fans would have to pay $6/month or $60/year to watch.
The backlash to this announcement was swift and vicious. Watcher’s YouTube channel lost more than 50,000 subscribers in 24 hours, and nearly 100,000 over the weekend. Commenters on the announcement video and across social media were particularly rankled by Lim’s assertion that the subscription service’s $6/month price had been picked because it was “low enough where anybody and everybody is able to afford it.”
Now, Watcher has rolled back this decision. In an update video, Bergara, Lim, and Madej apologized...

Last year, Swat was cancelled after six seasons, but CBS later reversed that decision and ordered a seventh and final season to wrap up the show. Star Shemar Moore believes an eighth season is possible if the season seven ratings are strong enough. Could Swat cheat death a second time? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.
A police action drama series, the Swat TV show stars Moore, Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Rochelle Aytes, and Anna Enger Ritch, with Alex Russell and Kenny Johnson recurring. The crime thriller centers on Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Moore), a Los Angeles native and former Marine who's been tapped to lead a new “last stop” Special Weapons And Tactics unit (S.W.A.T.). Asher's death shocked and angered fans as much as it did the characters who loved him.
The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 6 opened with his funeral. Soon, everyone had to rush off to deal with a mass casualty situation, not even allowing Jordan to finish her eulogy.
As the doctors got to work, Asher was gone but not forgotten, but it wasn't the tribute he deserved.
The hour opened with a large photo of Asher at a memorial service in the hospital chapel. I was dreading this moment almost as much as I had in real life when I had to go to a funeral for someone I loved who died suddenly.
If the entire hour had been devoted to the funeral, it would have been depressing and not in line with The Good Doctor's brand. Still, Asher Wolke was a beloved character who deserved something more than what he got.

Could a romance be in cards for Dr. Aaron Glassman in The Good Doctor‘s final season? TV Insider can confirm that Bess Armstrong will be back in future episodes as a recurring guest star. Armstrong debuted as Dr. Lim’s mother, Eileen Lim, in The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 4 on Tuesday, March 26 on ABC. Richard Schiff‘s character found himself on an unexpected date in “Date Night.” What started out as a favor for Dr. Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) when Eileen came to visit her daughter while in town for a drug trial. Glassman convinced Lim, his co-president at the hospital, to attend two board meetings without him, and in exchange he took her mother out shopping to keep her entertained. Little did he know that he would find the outing so entertaining himself! Conversation flowed with ease between Glassman and Lim’s mother as they walked around. The...

Shaun's refusal to work with Charlie was the best thing that could have happened to her.
On The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 4, Charlie helped Park, Jared, and Jordan devise a workable solution for a patient who was reluctant to undergo brain surgery while Shaun worked on a different case.
Charlie had her chance to shine, and she did so beautifully. Should she give up on Shaun?
Although Charlie still made a few inappropriate comments, she wasn't nearly as annoying -- or maybe the rest of her mentors were just more tolerant of her quirks.
Charlie's insertion of her opinion about Nathan and Jordan flirting wasn't that far off from how the rest of the doctors talk to each other. Jordan consistently and gently reminded her to keep it professional instead of losing her temper. That made a big difference.
Charlie Demonstrated She Belongs at St. Bonaventure

There's a fine line between asking for accommodations and demanding the world change to suit you, and Charlie crossed it.
On The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 3, she aggravated Shaun with incessant questions, made inappropriate comments, and generally had the attitude that her Asd meant she couldn't help any of her behavior.
Shaun looked like the bad guy when he treated her the way Dr. Han treated him, yet he had more of a point than anyone acknowledged.
The irony of Shaun trying to force Charlie into pathology after Han doing the same thing to him was not lost on Glassman or Lim.
While Shaun's frustration with Charlie was understandable, it wasn't believable that it never crossed his mind that Charlie would feel the same way about it that he did when he was receiving it. Glassman's reminder that Han did the same thing should have made him think twice.

Bringing new medical residents into St. Bonaventure should be a breath of fresh air.
But The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 2 ended up being more silly than serious between Charlie's inability to stop talking and Dom's fainting and inability to recognize a brain scan.
What are they teaching in that medical school? Sheesh.
I'm unsure how I feel about Charlie and her severe case of babble-itis.
As an autistic viewer, I was thrilled that The Good Doctor hired an autistic actress to play the character. It's about time -- there's no reason for it to have taken this long for an actual autistic person to portray a character that shares the way their brain is wired.
But the way Charlie was written made her hard to take, which was a huge disappointment.
The series' original premise was that Shaun's autism made certain things more difficult for him, and it seemed...
