- He was inducted into the 2014 New Jersey Hall of Fame in the Public Service Category.
- He was awarded the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
- He dropped out of high school to join the Navy, and later earned a high school equivalency diploma. He remained in the Navy Reserve until 1975, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander. He received a bachelor's degree in social studies from Trenton State College and a law degree from Rutgers. During law school, he worked after hours as a janitor.
