The world is never a nice place in the stories of Roald Dahl. Across the beloved British author's vast body of literature, one will find works about abusive caretakers, sadistic authority figures, and horrible fantasy characters itching to do harm to children. Just as often, though, his tales center on courageous kids and kindly adults willing and able to stand up to these bad grownups and terrifying monsters. It's why Dahl's writing continues to resonate with younger generations, despite the ongoing struggle to reconcile the timeless messages of his novels and short stories with Dahl's many failings as a human being.
Having acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company back in 2021, Netflix has a financial motive for keeping Dahl's stories alive and well in the general public's memory. The streamer has already released a well-received film adaptation of the "Matilda" stage musical based on Dahl's book of the same name,...

The film’s director, writer, and producer Phil Johnston has a special connection to the source material.

Netflix is certainly going all-in on its big Roald Dahl deal. With Wes Anderson's adaptations of The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar and other Dahl tales arriving this month, we also have word on what will become the company's first animated adaptation. Wreck-It Ralph veteran Phil Johnston is overseeing The Twits.
Co-written by Johnston and Meg Favreau, the story (loosely) adapts Dahl's tale of Mr. and Mrs. Twit. They are the meanest, smelliest, nastiest people in the world who also happen to own and operate the most disgusting, most dangerous, most idiotic amusement park in the world, Twitlandia.
But when the Twits rise to power in their town, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals are forced to become as tricky as the Twits in order to save the city…

“The Twits,” a new animated feature based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, will be coming to Netflix in 2025.
Phil Johnston, a Disney vet who worked on “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Zootopia” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (which he also directed alongside longtime collaborator Rich Moore), is directing, producing and co-writing “The Twits.” Katie Shanahan and Todd Demong are on board as co-directors, with Meg Favreau co-writing the script with Johnston.
“The Twits” is the first animated venture to come out of Netflix’s 2021 acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company. The company says that the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” series is still on the way and there will be more announcements forthcoming. But so far the only thing to come from the Dahl purchase are a series of short films helmed by Wes Anderson that will debut later this month, beginning with the 40-minute “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

The film world's favorite persnickety stylist, Wes Anderson, is back! Already! Anderson's most recent feature film, "Asteroid City," premiered in wide release just three months ago. It garnered rave reviews (Lex Briscuso wrote in these very pages that the film is "a top-tier Wes Anderson original that brings back the carefree fun and charm of some of his best works") and continues to be a box office force to be reckoned with, which is more or less par for the course for Anderson.
But eager Andersonians won't have to wait two to three years for the next one. A dazzling new adventure from the mind behind "Moonrise Kingdom" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" lies right around the corner. On September 27, Anderson will premiere a new short film on Netflix titled "The Wonderful Life of Henry Sugar." In fact, September 27 doesn't just mark the premiere of a new Anderson film, it's...

It’s been almost a decade since Jennifer Lee became the first woman to helm a Walt Disney Animation Studios feature film, 2013’s “Frozen.” She partnered with Chris Buck, and the duo co-directed and co-wrote what would become one of Disney’s all-time biggest hits. The film won an Oscar for animated feature.
In 2018, Lee was upped to chief creative officer and sought to find new voices. She would help burst open the door for other female directors at the studio including Peggy Holmes, who helmed “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning” and “Get a Horse!’s” Lauren MacMullan.
This month, Variety will bestow its Creative Leadership Award on Lee for not only her work on animation but also for helping other women follow the opening she made.
Before she could even speak, Lee, a Rhode Island native, was exposed to her grandparents’ Disney records and the books that came with them.

Norton Juster, author of the acclaimed modern classic children’s books The Phantom Tollbooth and The Dot and the Line, died last night. He was 91.
His death was confirmed by Penguin Random House. Additional details were not immediately available.
Both of Juster’s most well-known works of the early 1960s were adapted for film, in collaboration with animator Chuck Jones: The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics, first published by Random House in 1963, was adapted by Jones and MGM Animation into an Oscar-winning 1965 10-minute short film. The Phantom Tollbooth, published by Random House in 1961 with illustrations by Juster’s friend Jules Feiffer, was adapted in 1970 as a live-action/animated fantasy film, directed by Jones and Abe Levitow, with Dave Monahan directed the live-action segments.

As the streaming wars continue to heat up, any studio that owns and operates their own platform will be desperate for the various distribution deals to expire so that they can gather as much in-house content under one roof as possible. Disney Plus may be lagging far behind in terms of originals with the obvious exception of The Mandalorian, but the sheer strength in depth of the Mouse House’s back catalogue has seen the service gain over 70 million subscribers in the first year of its existence.

The making of “Frozen 2” (November 22) came at a tumultuous time for Disney Animation, as the film’s writer-director Jennifer Lee succeeded John Lasseter as chief creative officer. You could say that she went from being Anna to Elsa in her rise to the top. “But you don’t know if that’s a good thing or not — you haven’t seen the rest of the movie,” Lee told IndieWire, laughing, after introducing about 30 minutes of footage.
What we do know is the sequel to the Oscar-winning “Frozen” mega-blockbuster continues the adventures of siblings Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) by unlocking the mystery of Elsa’s magical icy power and why their parents died in a shipwreck at sea. It’s all connected to an enchanted forest and the elemental forces of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth, animated in a dazzling display of effects and character work, joined together...

Aaron Paul is an Idaho boy at heart. The three-time Emmy winning star of “Breaking Bad” and producer and actor on Nickelodeon’s bawdy, subversive animated series “Bojack Horseman” currently makes his home in Los Angeles, but Paul was born in Emmett, a sleepy city about 30 miles outside of Boise, and escapes to the spud state to unwind and visit with family every chance he gets.
“I’ve lived in California for most of my life,” Paul told a packed crowd gathered at the Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum, Idaho on March 15. “I love California. But Hollywood can be crazy. Coming back to Idaho is like a sanctuary for me.”
Paul’s Coffee Talk was one several standout events at the eighth annual Sun Valley Film Festival, which ran March 13-17 in the snowy playground for skiers and snowboarding aficionados. Paul, whom Variety honored at the fest with the Svff 2019 Pioneer Award,...

My kids waited patiently for Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet to come out for quite a long time, and when it did, we went to the movie theater and saw it, which was a big deal because we usually go to the drive-in for every movie, since it’s cheaper and my youngest can be wild and not bother as many people. But we trekked in and saw the movie, and we all loved it! My very favorite part was when Vanellope was running from the Disney police, and stumbled into the Disney Princesses’ room, and was interrogated by them, with them ultimately deeming her worthy of the princess title, embracing her laidback style of dress, and teaching her how to sing a song to find out her destiny.
The whole scene was hilarious and filled with fun little nods to the princesses’ backgrounds and some tongue-in-cheek jokes...

Eight years in, the Sun Valley Film Festival, running March 13-17, has established itself as a laid-back, picturesque event, where you’re as likely to be struck by the beauty of the setting — in the shadow of Idaho’s Bald Mountain — as by the films on screen.
Per executive director Teddy Grennan, this Idaho resort town, a three-hour drive from Boise, already has a rich cinematic history.
“Averell Harriman, who owned Union Pacific, wanted to start a ski town in the mountains, and he didn’t know how to launch it. So he hired this wunderkind, one of the original Mad Men who launched Miami Beach in the early 1900s. And the guy said, ‘Look, you own a rail line. Invite up all the Marilyn Monroes, all the hangers-on, and put it on the house.’ And they did just that. The only thing they asked for was to own the pictures of them — Hemingway,...

The year’s biggest night in movies is officially here.
In the running for the evening’s biggest prize, best picture, are “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Green Book,” “Roma,” “Vice,” “The Favourite” “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” and “A Star Is Born.”
Best actress contenders include first-time nominee Yalitza Aparicio, Olivia Colman, Melissa McCarthy, Glenn Close, and Lady Gaga. Close has won the Golden Globe and SAG Award for her role in “The Wife,” so all eyes will be on her to see if she can pull in her first win in seven nominations.
Leading men Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Rami Malek, Viggo Mortensen, and Willem Dafoe are in consideration for the coveted prize of best actor, with Malek favored in predictions.
The night marks a rare instance in which the awards are going without a host in the wake of Kevin Hart’s departure following backlash over his homophobic remarks that were resurfaced from years ago.

The big night is finally here. All of the precursors, predictions, speculation, and overall insanity has led to this. The 91st Academy Awards are only a few hours away. By the end of the night, we won’t be guessing what the telecast will be like, and more importantly, we’ll have a whole new crop of Oscar winners. I’ve spent almost a full year trying to figure this race out, which is perhaps the most unpredictable in memory. It all comes down to this. There’s nothing left to do but sit back and try to enjoy the craziness we’ll undoubtedly experience this evening. One more time, the Academy Award nominees: Best Picture: “Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Favourite” “Green Book” “Roma” “A Star Is Born” “Vice” Lead Actor: Christian Bale, “Vice” Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born” Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate” Rami Malek,...

Chicago – The Best Animated Film category at the 91st Academy Awards honor both these visual treats and their status in the new Golden Age. The visual density of today’s animation reaches a new height in a rare Walt Disney Studio sequel, “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” This is a follow-up to “Wreck-It Ralph,” a huge animated hit film. Returning to guide the sequel, which has Wreck-It Ralph “inside” the internet, are co-directors Phil Johnston and Rich Moore.
Also returning for the sequel are a number of the voice actors and characters from the first film, including the saucy-tongued Vanellope (voiced by Sarah Silverman), Felix (Jack McBrayer), Calhoun (Jane Lynch) and John C. Reilly as Ralph. Joining them in this new outing is the new character of Shank (Gal Gadot). The story involves the arcade that Ralph and Vanellope live at (in their respective video games) and an accident that changes everything.

With Oscar balloting at an end, we’re continuing our second annual series of interviews with Academy voters from different branches for their candid thoughts on what got picked, overlooked, and overvalued this year.
I take the Oscars seriously as they are a primary marketing and informative tool for the movies. The show has to be re-examined and re-imagined. Too much to go into here. The changes proposed were never thought through properly. There should be an all-members meeting at least once a year lasting a day. This is a very creative membership. The Academy is too bureaucratic and self-absorbed.
Performance by an actor in a leading role
Christian Bale in “Vice”
Bradley Cooper in “A Star Is Born”
Willem Dafoe in “At Eternity’s Gate”
Rami Malek in “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Viggo Mortensen in “Green Book”
Rami Malek was totally compelling. He transformed into Freddie Mercury, holding a mediocre movie together.
