The BBC has commissioned an adaptation of journalist and campaigner Paris Lees’ memoirs.
What It Feels Like For a Girl, which is also the name of the book, will be an eight-part series for BBC Three and BBC iPlayer that’s billed as a “wild, anarchic spin on a coming-of-age drama” inspired by Lees’ story.
Here’s the synopsis: “It’s a new millennium – Madonna, Moloko and Basement Jaxx top the charts, and there’s a whole world to explore. But teenager Byron is stuck in a small working-class town that hasn’t been the same since the coal mine shut in the ’80s. Sick of mam, sick of dad, sick of being beaten up for ‘talkin’ like a poof.’ Sick of everyone shuffling about like the living dead, going on about kitchens they’re too skint to do up and marriages they’re too scared to leave. Byron needs to get away,...

Nadiya Hussain, who shot to global stardom when she won the 2015 edition of “The Great British Bake Off,” is set to voice new CBeebies show “What’s On Your Head?”
Produced by London and Bristol-based indie outfit Gold Wala, the show is a 10-part factual entertainment series inspired by the wearing of face masks during the pandemic. It was commissioned for CBeebies, the BBC’s free-to-air children’s television network aimed at children aged 7 and below.
“What’s On Your Head?” will explore the different things people wear on their face or head for religious, cultural, professional and safety reasons. From hijabs to lawyer’s wigs, scuba masks to firefighter helmets, the series is a new way for children to understand the world around them using a combination of live action and animation that celebrates diversity, humanizes difference and explains the reasons why people decide to put something on to cover their head or face.

Since saying “Bye, Bye, Bye” in 2002, Justin Timberlake, Jc Chasez, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick have each built careers for themselves outside of ‘Nsync — the blockbuster boyband that brought them worldwide fame in the ’90s.
Though there aren’t plans for the group to get back together and make music any time soon, they’re still good friends — reuniting most recently in August for Chasez’s 40th birthday bash.
“The guys spent the entire night together,” a source told People at the time. “They all sat in a group and just reunited, relived and had such a ball.

If slapping Tiësto and Oliver Heldens’ names on a track doesn’t put it in as many music fans’ ears as you were hoping it would, then a remix series ought to do the trick.
The two superstar DJs did exactly that for their Natalie La Rose-featured single, “The Right Song,” and it features an eclectic cross section of electronic music artists.
Dillon Francis is the name likely to garner the most attention on the list – and he already teased his remix on Twitter back in January. Basement Jaxx, Mike Williams and Tom Zanetti also made contributions of their own, however – and for our money, that of the latter artist takes a close second place to that of Francis.
That said, we’d like to know which remix of Tiësto and Oliver Heldens’ “The Right Song” is your favorite. Listen to each one in the following Spotify player and...

The Long Spliff Goodnight: Nourizadeh’s Stoner Action Flick Mixes Kooky with Convention
Comprised of a tangle of similar narrative threads spliced together from a variety of genres and time periods, Nima Nourizadeh’s sophomore directorial effort American Ultra is generally more often entertaining than not, though considering the significant reputations of its leads and zany array of the supporting cast, it could have been better served with a bit more outlandishness than the conventional acts it delivers. As it stands, the success of this rural set conspiracy comedy depends mostly on the low-key charm this rather approximately defined scenario allows to transpire, but it ultimately isn’t goofy enough to allow for the cult notoriety something like this promises. As scripted by Max Landis (again returning to the landscape of youthful, self-reliant outsiders as in his 2012 Chronicle), there’s not a whole lot of surprise, but much like its drug of choice,...

Whether making a feature or short film, a great amount of time goes into the process. The writing, the shooting, the editing and then getting your film shown… every filmmaker makes the arduous journey and dreams one day they’ll hear their names announced on Oscar nominations morning.
For one such filmmaking team, Mat Kirkby and James Lucas, the dream became reality on January 16 when their short film, The Phone Call, was among the five films nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Short Film category.
Their emotional film follows Heather, (played by Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins), a shy lady who works at a helpline call centre. When she receives a phone call from a mystery man (played by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent) she has no idea that the encounter will change her life forever.

As you might know, The Voice UK returns this weekend - and with it are a whole host of brand new blind auditions! Now, we love a good blind audition, so the show's return got us thinking about some of our favourites. Below, we bring you just 12 but we couldn't include everything, so get in the comments and let us know your favourites...
1. Max Milner
Max Milner ended up being one of our favourite Voice contestants in the first series - and not just because of the relish with which Danny O'Donoghue said his name. This was on the very first episode of The Voice UK and instantly got us interested, as Max skilfully combined 'Come Together' and 'Lose Yourself' in a mash-up that isn't just a gimmick. He's great - and Danny attempting to rap along adds some laughs, too.
2. Vince Kidd
We've all heard 'Like A Virgin' a gazillion times.

Director Mat Kirkby had to wait in line behind another helmsman before starting production on his short film “The Phone Call,” but if you have to cede your turn to another director, it might as well be Woody Allen. Kirkby who's directed music videos for Adele, Muse and Basement Jaxx, decided to make the 20-minute short film while suffering a “crisis of faith” from filming Kentucky Fried Chicken commercials. (Apparently, not everybody needs a little KFC.) Watch and Vote in TheWrap's 2014 Shortlist Film Festival Here Then he waited around for a year while the film's leading lady, Sally Hawkins, wrapped work.

With Edm having become a massive mainstream phenomenon, it’s imperative to remember the influence of that exhilarating first wave of trendsetters in the mid to late ’90s. The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx and the like wildly turned dance music on its head and veritably became the “rock” stars of the post-rave generation. Las Vegas’ Crystal Method were one of America’s most dynamic representatives of that scene, their rousing 1997 breakbeat single “Busy Child” enjoying months of ubiquity. The duo of Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan are returning now with their first new album in five years in

The most influential DJ at this weekend's Electric Daisy Carnival in New York opened the festival's mainstage early on the first day: It was the French producer Cedric Gervais, whose 2012 hit "Molly" has inspired a catch phrase emblazoned on thousands of t-shirts across the parking lot of Citi Field, the home stadium for the Mets. "Have you seen Molly?" the song goes. "She makes me want to dance." Much more than a cheeky request for Mdma via a garment purchasable from the Shore Store, it embodied the zeitgeist – not just that of the largest electronic dance music festival in America, but of the party generation. Rave culture has taken over this generation full bore, and the kids are so invested that thousands of young women hot-glued their bras with rhinestones, glowsticks and silk daisies, clearly prepping for this experience for weeks.

Before we know it, festival season will be upon us again along with (hopefully) some lovely British summer weather that’ll evoke the chill-out vibe everyone wants from a music festival. The V Festival, held at Chelmsford’s Hylands Park and Staffordshire’s Weston Park on the 17th and 18th of August, is already set to be another cracking year, complete with a line-up includes a bit of everything for everyone.
Beyonce and Kings of Leon are set to headline the festival, providing a solid contrast of pop and indie rock that will transpire through to the entire festival, ensuring that attendees manage to get a broad selection of music to choose from. If you’re thinking of going, it’s best to snap up tickets quickly, because as usual, they’re going to sell out long before the fest kicks off. You can buy tickets for the V festival here,...

Cricket Australia is positioning January’s one-day internationals as ‘The summer’s biggest dress-up party’ in a new campaign by Gpy&R Melbourne.
Ads for the Commonwealth Bank Series against Sri Lanka and the West Indies feature a house party at a suburban home where people are wearing wacky costumes.

Ads will run on TV, outdoor, radio, social and print.
Julian Dunne, senior manager of marketing for Cricket Australia, said: “The fans told us that the Commonwealth Bank Series is as much about what happens in the crowd as on the pitch. Over recent seasons we have seen some incredible dress ups and the event is becoming more and more social. This season we have dialed it up considerably with global acts such as Basement Jaxx, huge prizes and lots of great entertainment in and around the venues. The new campaign captures this nicely.”

Edm tastemaker tells MTV News he'll pair dance and rock acts like Lenny Kravitz and Luciano at the event.

For more than two decades, Pete Tong's "Essential Mix" radio show has been heralded as an authority in electronic dance music. BBC Radio 1's legendary tastemaker had his finger on the pulse back when just a few underground acts were thriving and he has maintained his impact in an era when Edm has become a global phenomenon.
Now, with mainstream artists like Flo Rida sampling the likes of Avicii, Tong is gearing up to launch an event that will pair dance DJs with rock stars. The Ibiza123 Festival will kick off in July on the Spanish island. And while Ibiza is essentially the genre's mecca, Tong saw a void there.
"Strangely, in Ibiza club history there has never been a festival," he told MTV News recently.

Jack White has won Grammys, plays multiple instruments, and has even secured a spot on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, but he's never worked on a film score... At least, not until now. Variety reports that Disney has hired the multi-talented singer/producer/actor to write, produce, and perform the score for their upcoming western produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.
"Gore [Verbinski] hatched the idea and Johnny was thrilled with it," Bruckheimer told Variety. "We're all very excited to have [Jack White] on board." I'm a big fan of when established artists stretch their creativite muscles and enter the realm of movies, and some recent success stories include The Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, and Trent Reznor.
Are you a fan of Jack White's music, and do you think he can pull off the score to a western adventure like this?...

Pop music – it’s all sweet and innocent right? Well, listen to the lyrics and you’ll open up a big ol’ can of worms – raunchy worms with come-to-bed eyes. Pop music is littered with the whole innuendo spectrum that makes you look back at your old school discos in a completely different light. Yeah, I bet you’ve sang along to these (I know I have) and probably attempted to drunkenly gyrate to them too (guilty again) and that’s perfectly fine. Embrace the lyrical sin and the melodic muck, I say! With Nelly Furtado and Flo-Rida soon to release their new singles Big Hoops (Bigger the Better) and Whistle (including the completely innocent line ‘Can you blow my whistle baby?‘) respectively, here’s a roundup of the five most common Pop-uendo themes ranging from the childish to the just plain filthy.

The Pogues and Badly Drawn Boy have been named as headliners for the Strummer of Love festival. The one-off event marks the 10th anniversary of the death of The Clash frontman Joe Strummer. It will be held at a secret location in the middle of the Somerset countryside, on the weekend of August 17-19. Proceeds from the festival will go towards Strummerville: The Joe Strummer New Music Foundation, which was set up by friends and family of the late singer. Frank Turner, Basement Jaxx, KT Tunstall and Billy Bragg are also among the longlist of artists for the festival. Charity director Trish Whelan said of the festival: "It's very exciting for us to be presenting this special one-off event to mark Joe's 10th anniversary. 2011 gave us a lot of great music (as I rounded up here), but there was one composer who stood out from the pack with his distinctive scores (two of which made my year-end list) for films that ranged from a backseat law practice (The Lincoln Lawyer) to a viral epidemic (Contagion) to a near silent stunt driver by day, getaway driver by night (Drive). Three very different films with three distinct scores, all from the same composer – Cliff Martinez. Martinez has garnered the most attention and praise for his score for Drive, but he also created impressive (and memorable) music for The Lincoln Lawyer and Contagion. The Lincoln Lawyer may not have been the biggest hit at the box office, but it was a decent film and it stood out in my mind more than I thought it would, thanks to its music. The same was the case with Contagion, a...

The competitive portion of So You Think You Can Dance‘s eighth season ended not with a “Woohoo!” but rather, with the bang of Nigel Lythgoe’s harsh-truth gun — and we didn’t even have Tyce Diorio to blame. Yes indeed, midway through the proceedings, Uncle Nigel, the man behind the curtain (and at the head of the judges’ table), abandoned the “best ever” hard sell we’ve come to expect and admitted the evening’s trajectory had been “a little disappointing.”
So the question looms: What went wrong? Maybe our final four dancers — Melanie Moore, Tadd Gadduang, Sasha Mallory,...

A certain kind of music festival has emerged in recent years. In the mid-nineties, the festival scene was stagnating: Glastonbury was a ticketless free-for-all, V was a soulless corporate cash-in and Reading was where teenagers set portaloos on fire. Sensing a gap in the market, some enterprising sorts started up what became known as the ’boutique festival’ – multi-arts, small but perfectly formed, family friendly, an uber-relaxed atmosphere and an often grand country setting. Positioning itself as the ‘original boutique festival’ is the Big Chill, now in its seventeenth year and a veteran on the festival calendar. This is a festival which does exactly what is says on the tin, promising a weekend of extreme relaxation with a blissfully mellow soundtrack in a beautiful setting. Nestled in an idyllic Herefordshire valley, the beautiful site – home to the festival since 2002 – is a working deer reserve year-round, the private grounds of nearby Eastnor Castle,...

Tears flowed faster than the footwork of the dreaded quickstep during tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance results-show telecast, but ultimately the right two dancers went home. (No, I’m not talking about Carmen Electra, though she was conspicuously absent from the judges’ table after guesting in the “gentle celebrity” spot on Wednesday.)

The late-night mugging that sets up Joe Cornish's debut film is tricky to get over. It skews your judgement of the BMX-riding teenage hoodies (the film's "heroes") at the centre of the action. However, this alien invasion movie is still a whole lot more fun than most British action films, and is blessed with vigorous direction and performances, a zesty, dubstep-laced soundtrack from Basement Jaxx, as well as a perky script.

Today’s track of the day comes from Jai Paul, a British songwriter and record producer from Rayners Lane, United Kingdom. Paul’s 2007 demo Btstu has a robotic-synth like sound to it, and while it might not get anyone on the dance floor, it still makes a good listen while on the road. Jai Paul has cited a number of influences including UB40, Prince, Basement Jaxx andAlicia Keys, so if any of those acts interest you, you might like his sound. Enjoy.

The only invasion more impressive than the wildebeest-like aliens that descend on a South London street corner to terrorize its denizens in Joe Cornish's "Attack the Block" is the way in which the film itself came in and conquered SXSW. Deep in the heart of geek culture...err, Texas, the debut appeared to be one of the surest bets of the festival, given the involvement of executive producer Edgar Wright and that Cornish's arrival in the States comes after years of being a favorite in his native England as a radio host on the sketch comedy program "The Adam and Joe Show" and his work on two scripts with Wright for two of the more anticipated films around, Wright's "Ant-Man" and Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn."
It's probably no coincidence then that Cornish just made a film that thrives on the wit and joy that permeates Wright's work,...

I’m starting to regret canceling my trip to Austin, TX to attend the South By Southwest Film Festival. I really should have been there! If I hadn’t blown my loot on Sundance, I’d have gone to SXSW instead, because, quite frankly, I’m more excited about the body of films (not just black films) screening at SXSW than I was about those at Sundance. Plus, it’s a lot warmer in Austin, TX this time of the year; Park City, Ut is a freezer!
Anywho… one of the films that was on my to-see list is a British sci-fi/action/comedy titled Attack The Block. It screened last night in its world premiere, and the reviews from those who were present, are mostly stellar!

I was surprised to hear last year that Francis Ford Coppola had quietly gone into production on a gothic dream/nightmare horror story called Twixt Now and Sunrise. I'm a hell of a lot more surprised to hear that Dan Deacon is scoring it. Dan Deacon is a guy whose basic appearance will cause anyone who casually spits out the word 'hipster' to recoil in horror. But he's one of the best goddamn performers I've seen in a while, with the ability to squeeze wild noises out of analog electronics and an enviable knack for manipulating audiences. None of which seems to gel at all with what we know about Mr. Coppola's dream inspired film that stars Val Kilmer, Elle Fanning, Ben Chaplin, Alden Ehrenreich and Bruce Dern. That just makes me all the more curious. I don't see how the sounds we're used to hearing from Deacon would work,...
