Exclusive: George Gallo is set to direct the feature adaptation of A.J. Benza’s 2015 childhood memoir ’74 and Sunny from Simon & Schuster.
Benza, the former Daily News show business columnist and E!’s Mysteries & Scandals host and producer, is currently writing the script.
’74 and Sunny recounts when Benza’s shy, effeminate cousin from New Jersey came to live with his Sicilian-American family during the summer of 1974 in Long Island, memories that were dominated by the author’s short-tempered, outspoken, hyper-masculine father. Through anecdotes of fishing with his father, playing tackle football and conquering neighborhood bullies, Benza tells a story of triumph and acceptance, of a loving but rough-around-the-edges family that puts aside its prejudices to welcome with open arms a young boy struggling to understand his sexuality and ultimately accept himself. It’s a story in which tolerance wins over ignorance, family neutralizes fear, and love triumphs over all.

For those of you that don’t know, Destroy The Brain used to be a podcast. I started it back in June of 2007. Last year, we converted the website from podcast only to a full fledged website and our focus has been on news and reviews in written format while the podcast faded away. While we will be coming back later this year in a new format in podcast form, our podcast comrades – Outside the Cinema – are presenting their first theatrical event with a locally produced film. If you are near Danvers, Ma, go check it out. Read beyond the break for the full press release.

Drive-in Horrorshow is an anthology of five gore-filled short films consisting of serial killers, monsters, and torture. At an abandoned drive-in theater, The Projectionist is the dark-humored host who serves as the narrator in-between each film showcased.
As the anthology progresses, each short film switches ambiance based on its plot. The first short presented, “Pig,” dives straight into the blood and chills. Harsh and unrelenting in its tone and mood, a college frat boy endures painful torture while he’s trapped in a small, enclosed bathroom.
After being served with a claustrophobic and tense entrance, the anthology offers the following comedic segment, “The Closet.” A 12 year old child wants his irritating family to go away. The neglected child mistakenly believes the demonic creature in his closet will help get rid of his family. He then starts using each of his family members as food for the creature. Just like the Final Destination series,...

The anthology, Drive-in Horrorshow, is meant to be a blood-splatterfest consisting of five thrilling and gory short tales. Director Michael Neel and producer Greg Ansin collaborated on creating a unique macabre character, The Projectionist. The Projectionist showcases each of these five short films at his abandoned drive-in theater.
Editing a single feature length movie takes many hours to build. Imagine trying to concise five separate stories, including the prologues and epilogues with The Projectionist, into one whole narrative. Continuity would have been drastically changed if the filmmakers had to contact their actors a year and a half, especially the child stars. What if the child actor’s voice had changed or if they had grown a foot since principal photography? The true nature of an independent production involves extensive storyboarding and pre-production planning in order to keep problems at a minimum.
