Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future and Danis Goulet’s Night Raiders lead nominees for the upcoming Dgc Awards with three each.
The Directors of Guild of Canada unveiled nominations for its 21st Dgc Awards on Nov. 5 on Friday. Del Toro, who shot Nightmare Alley mostly in and around Toronto, did not receive a nomination for best feature film direction.
But del Toro’s tribute to the film noir genre, which starred Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, did earn Oscar-nominated production designer Tamara Deverell a Dgc Awards nod in the same category, Cam McLauchlin a nomination for feature best picture editing, and best sound editing nominations for Nathan Robitaille, Jill Purdy, Dashen Naidoo, Josh Brown, Nelson Ferreira, Kayla Stewart, Craig MacLellan and Kevin Banks.

There are a whopping 237 submissions for Best Drama Directing on the 2022 Emmys ballot, which will yield seven nominees. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Crown” (“War” by Jessica Hobbs) and the other nominees were “Bridgerton” (“Diamond of the First Water” by Julie Anne Robinson), “The Crown” (“Fairytale” by Benjamin Caron), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (“The Wilderness” by Liz Garbus), “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 9: The Jedi” by Jon Favreau) and “Pose” (“Series Finale” by Steven Canals).
The only eligible returnee out of this bunch is “Bridgerton,” which entered three episodes of its second season for consideration. It may have a harder time getting back in as “Ozark” and “Succession” will be back to reclaim their crowns, having prevailed in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Winner Jason Bateman is back on the ballot for the “Ozark” series finale, after being absent for the third season, and joining him will be his co-star Laura Linney for her directorial debut,...

There’s a delightful gag in the final act of Jamie Travis’ 2012 comedy “For a Good Time, Call” — incidentally, a former Sundance entry — in which the leading ladies profess their platonic affection for each other in ways most closely associated with romantic proclamations. Sophie Hyde’s “Animals” takes that idea and slingshots it a decade into the future, centering her film around the seemingly unbreakable bond between Laura (Holliday Grainger) and Tyler (Alia Shawkat), best friends who probably made similar promises in the early days of their own friendship. The film even opens with Laura lovingly reciting the story of how they first met, a tale that’s both sweet and indicative of the pains to come.
Based on Emma Jane Unsworth’s novel of the same name — the novelist has also penned the screenplay, and her affection for her characters shows — “Animals” picks up ten years into Laura and Tyler’s friendship,...

10. “What Would Diplo Do”
Season 1, Episode 2, “The Cult”
Directed by Brandon Dermer
Written by James Van Der Beek
“What would Diplo do?” is a question addressed throughout the first few episodes of Viceland’s new comedy, but what Diplo actually does gets tackled head on in Episode 2. Functioning as a response to Diplo’s most human moment in the pilot (asking nemesis Calvin Harris if all they do as DJs is push a button), the episode examines the creation of one song — just one — over the course of, well, quite a long time.
When a reporter stops by to write a story on how Diplo (James Van Der Beek) creates a song, he becomes witness to a maniacal process involving rats, post-its, a blender, and, yes, a cult. The running joke is that Diplo goes to crazy extremes just to get back to where he started, but there’s a...

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
Sandwiched in between the summer’s biggest blockbuster offerings and superhero tentpoles are a pair of outrageously funny outliers — comedies that, for all their raunchy gags and wild behavior, center squarely on women and their friendships — in the form of “Rough Night” and the upcoming release “Girls Trip.” Although both films lean hard on their comedic trappings, often in the form of booze-fueled bad behavior from their leading ladies, they also both find unexpected heart and charm in their deeper explorations of the relationships between the very different women that populate them.
But even with films like “Rough Night” and “Girls Trip” hitting the multiplex with a welcome dose of girl power, it seems that even this summer isn’t immune from the most tired and toxic of lady-centric comedy tropes: the dicks before chicks sub-genre.

When it comes to genre television series as of late, there are a few shows that get more love than others. And since I finally caught up with the recent season two finale of Scream: The TV Series, I thought now would be the perfect time to tip my hat to this underrated series that not only wears its horror-loving heart so very clearly on its sleeve, but also keeps the mystery-fueled spirit of Wes Craven’s films alive and kicking, all while showcasing a lot of fantastic talent behind the camera as well.
And as much as I adore those first two factors, it’s that final part—the way Scream: The TV Series has utilized some incredible directorial talent—that has made me a staunch supporter of the show, as I’d argue that Scream may the best genre series that most fans have consistently overlooked ever since it debuted last summer.

Scream, Season 1, Episodes 8 to 10
Created by Jill E. Blotevogel, Jay Beattie, and Dan Dworkin
Aired Tuesdays at 10pm (Et) on MTV
There’s something we’ve got to talk about before we can talk about the final three episodes of Scream, and that’s about the sad passing of Wes Craven on Sunday, August 30th. There’s a thousand things to say about Wes Craven and what he did for the horror genre, especially in the Scream franchise, and there are plenty of great pieces on the man all across the internet, so I won’t repeat was has already been articulated. We wouldn’t have this show without Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream franchise, which is one of the only horror franchises without a single bad installment. Even the weakest entry (Scream 3) is still pretty good. Horror, at one level, functions as an interplay between what...

MTV's Scream pilot ticks all the boxes without feeling rote or formulaic. It's a witty, twisty, thrill for fans of the original...
I never would have thought I would watch as much MTV as I do. Once upon a time, MTV was a must-watch for music videos, and maybe weird cartoons like Beavis And Butthead or Liquid Television. Other than that, I never really had a lot of engagement with MTV or its programming. Then Teen Wolf came along, and everything seemed to change for the former Music Television. Now they're producing some great TV, attracting great ratings in their demographic, and killing it on the teen horror front. Teen Wolf wasn't enough; now the network is reaching into its bag of nasty tricks and unleashing a television adaptation of Scream on the world.

One big difference between the small screen version of Scream and the movies is the killer's mask. Described as a mixture between the headgear of Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Ghostface, the mask from the Scream TV series has been revealed.
EW unveiled the first look at the murderer's mask in MTV's Scream TV series. Empty eye holes and a gaping mouth show some relation to the iconic Ghostface look, but this mask is also held down by slightly visible straps and retains a more human-like look with its realistic facial dimensions.
With the Scream TV series premiering on June 30th, we'll have to wait until later this summer to see who's hidden beneath this new mask and find out their motives (if any) for murder.
Speaking with EW, Scream film series director and Scream TV series executive producer Wes Craven mentioned that the different design of the killer's mask...

During last night’s MTV Movie Awards, viewers were granted a first look at the network’s upcoming reboot series, Scream, in the shape of three trailers. Based on the 1996 Wes Craven movie which rewrote the rules of horror and handed them back covered in blood and nods to a tired, all-knowing audience, MTV’s small screen take appears to be a somewhat less pioneering affair.
Craven is back to executive produce along with Scream producers Cathy Konrad and Marianne Magdalena. For this hip, happening remodel, the directorial duties go to Jamie Travis who, along with a bunch of new writers, carves a new story that’s anchored in the origins of the first Scream movie.

MTV is putting on its own version of Wes Craven‘s “Scream,” and during the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, the network released the first trailer for the series, which also revealed the show’s premiere date of June 30. Young stars Willa Fitzgerald, Amy Forsyth, John Karna, Carlson Young and Amadeus Serafini starred on the pilot, which marks the first foray into television for Kevin Williamson‘s horror franchise. Jamie Travis (“For a Good Time Call” and MTV’s “Faking It”) directed the pilot, which also features Bella Thorne in a new version of the famous Drew Barrymore death scene that launched the film series.

MTV used the occasion of its own Movie Awards over the weekend to debut the trailer for its new Scream TV series. Bella Thorne has a bad night in a swimming pool, suggesting she isn't in the show for long, and Willa Fitzgerald, Amy Forsyth, John Karna, Carlson Young and Amadeus Serafini fill out the rest of the cast."You can't do a slasher movie as a TV series," the trailer tells us outright, setting out the show's stall as continuing the franchise's genre self-awareness. It looks as if there'll be plenty of teen soap opera around the murderous antics, but the plot synopsis we have so far gives us a YouTube video going viral, leading to problems for a new generation of Lakewood high-schoolers and serving as "the catalyst for a murder that opens up a window to the town's troubled past", as documented in Screams 1-4.Jamie Travis (Finding Carter,...

MTV’s Scream adaptation must have had a decent pilot, a full season has just been ordered...
Do you like scary movies? More importantly, do you like televisual serials based on previously successful scary movies? We hope so, because MTV have just ordered a full series of their small screen adaptation of Scream.
Via a cryptic tweet and a phone line, MTV announced that the series will premiere next October, nice and close to Halloween 2015. We’ve also learnt that the series will be ten hour-long episodes long and that Wes Craven will be involved in a producer capacity, as are Harvey and Bob Weinstein. Kevin Williamson however, who scripted the original film, will not be involved.
Jamie Travis of Faking It directed the successful pilot episode, with Revenge’s Jay Beattie and Dan Dworking writing the script. On executive producer and showrunner duties was Harper’s Island’s Jill Blotevogel.

“Do you like scary movies?” If this line from Wes Craven’s Scream still sends a shiver down your spine, then perhaps you should prepare to be creeped out by more cryptic phone calls, as MTV has officially put in a series order for their Scream reboot.
MTV made the announcement via Twitter, using blood-splattered emojis to get the message across, in addition to a listed phone number. If you call the number, a man imitating Roger L. Jackson’s chilling vocal cords says, “Do you like scary TV? Scream is coming to MTV October 2015.”
The first season of the show will consist of 10 episodes and it is believed that the franchise’s iconic Ghostface outfit will not be worn by any killers early on, based on this statement made by R.J. Torbert of Fun World (the official rights-holder and manufacturer of the Ghostface costume) in an interview with Ghostface.

MTV has greenlit its “Scream” adaptation for a 10-episode first season set to premiere in 2015, the network alerted press via Twitter. Jill Blotevogel (“Harper's Island,” “Ravenswood”) serves as an executive producer. She revised the original script, which was written by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin (“Criminal Minds,” “The Event,” and “Revenge”). Finally, Teen Wolf has a scary friend. MTV has handed a full series order to its TV adaptation of Scream, the 1996 slasher film and subsequent box office-busting horror franchise. The series will premiere in October 2015 with 10 episodes. The co-production with Dimension TV was announced way back in May 2013 with the original announcement of a pilot order with Ravenswood writer Jill Blotevogel running the show and Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin (Criminal Minds) penning the pilot script. The series found its cast and director (Faking It’s Jamie Travis) in August. Harvey and Bob Weinstein will executive produce alongside Wes Craven,...

I wanted to do a little something extra special as wrap party for our very enjoyable and well attended 20 episode fifth season of Hit Me With Your Best Shot. So imma give out awards since awards are what we love best. The episode I liked reading everyone's takes on the most were -- can I say all? -- the Jamie Travis short films since I never get to hear opinions on those (or any short films really) and Under the Skin as it needs to be spoken of and contemplated. And by as many people as possible. Spread the good word.
But really I could just as easily call everything else "tied for third" because I always love to hear so many perspectives. But no season is perfect: Zorba the Greek turned out to be kind of a dud (I had never seen it so I blame the Oscars!). Two...

Just two weeks ago, MTV announced that it had set director Jamie Travis (Faking It) to helm the pilot episode of a series based on the popular meta-horror Scream franchise. At the same time, the network revealed a cast of young up-and-comers, including Willa Fitzgerald (Alpha House, Royal Pains), Amy Forsyth (Reign), John Karna (The Neighbors), Carlson Young (Key and Peele) and Amadeus Serafini. Now, some more casting news, including a major recasting, has been announced.
Bex Taylor-Klaus, who became a fan favorite on The CW’s Arrow with his portrayal of DC Comics character Sin, will be replacing Forsyth in the role of Audrey, the daughter of a Lutheran pastor, who is described as “an artsy loner who aspires to be a filmmaker.” Audrey used to be close friends with protagonist Emma Duvall (Fitzgerald), “a classic beauty whose looks and popularity hide a natural shyness and intellectual nature.” Emma,...

Some quick casting news is here for the upcoming MTV series based on the Scream franchise as THR is reporting that four more actors have signed on for active duty, one of whom will be replacing the previously announced Amy Forsyth.
Willa Fitzgerald will star as Emma Duvall, a classic beauty whose looks and popularity hide a natural shyness and intellectual nature. Her new life with the “in crowd” leaves her estranged from her childhood best friend, Audrey.
Emma is the lead in MTV’s "Scream" take and bears a resemblance to Neve Campbell’s tortured high school student Sidney Prescott in the 1996 feature film.
Bex Taylor-Klaus, who has been recurring on The CW’s "Arrow" as DC Comics character Sin and whose credits also include "The Killing" and "House of Lies," will replace Forsyth in role of Audrey, the daughter of a Lutheran pastor. She’s described as an...

For this week's Best Shot episode, the last 'detour' before the final three classics for the season, I wanted to introduce all of you to the short films of Jamie Travis. The Canadian filmmaker has only made one feature, the phone sex comedy For a Good Time, Call... (2012) and he's been making a living with commercials and the MTV series Faking It of late. His true claim to fame and the reason we should all root for bigger feature film things to come are his two short film trilogies.
Jamie Travis and the trilogy that hooked me
I first became obsessed with his work when I was on a festival jury and saw the first film in the Patterns trilogy, a trilogy which might be semi-accurately described as a fusion of Lynchian nightmare, oddball musical, and romantic dramedy. A few years ago I geeked out and embarrassed myself when I...

The televisual remake of Scream brings in Jamie Travis, Willa FitzGerald and more…
Remaking Scream for TV is an intriguing choice – with terrifying telly sometimes feeling like a thing of the past, it could be really enjoyable if done right.
Today we learnt that the director and cast have now been confirmed for the pilot episode. Behind the camera is Jamie Travis, director of five Faking It episodes and 2012 feature For A Good Time, Call. It’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the show.
Willa Fitzgerald, of Royal Pains and Alpha House, will play Emma – described as “a classic beauty whose life with the in crowd leaves her estranged from childhood best friend Audrey”. This jilted Bff and wannabe filmmaker will be played by Amy Forsyth (who has decent horror chops from Torment and the upcoming A Christmas Horror Story.)

MTV has been working on a pilot for Scream, the cult hit franchise from the 90s. Now we are learning more about what direction they will be taking with this series. MTV chose to cast 100% fairly fresh faces as the stars of the possible series. Willa Fitzgerald, Amy Forsyth, Amadeus Serafini, Carlson Young, John Karna, and Carlson Young. Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin will writing the pilot, while Fakin It‘s Jamie Travis will be directing it. No word on when the expect to go into production, but we should hear if it is picked up or not sometime in 2015.
This is a good idea for MTV as they aim to create more original shows. They have found success with it, especially those based off of movies (such as Teen Wolf). So they seem to have a logical reason for their concept. However, with that being said this show will...

Wes Craven’s 1996 Scream was easily one of the best and most influential horror films of the 1990s. Its sequel in 1997 was just as successful with critics, audiences, and at the box office. The franchise faltered with 2000’s Scream 3, but started to take a step back in the right direction with 2011’s Scream 4. While rumors have persisted for sometime that a Scream 5 is in the works, Entertainment Weekly reports that a TV series based on the popular franchise is officially moving forward and now has a cast and director.
In development since 2012, the Scream TV series will air on MTV, where other movie-turned-show, Teen Wolf, has a rabid cult following. The showrunner will be Jill Blotevogel (Ravenswood), while the pilot will be scripted by Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin (Criminal Minds), and will now be directed by Jamie Travis (For a Good Time, Call…).
