In January 1986, he became the first sitting member of the U.S. House
of Representatives to travel in space, serving as a payload specialist
aboard the Columbia space shuttle. Ten days after the Columbia landed,
the shuttle Challenger exploded on takeoff, killing the crewmembers
with whom his crew had trained.
